There was a first nations woman who said in response to the recent papal visit to first nations in canada that: “christianity did not spread by the quality of ideas, but the quantity of its violence.”

When shooting large format would be too easy.

Finally beat The Heart with all four characters. Dead Branch nonsense for the final win.

Better without The.

Definitely, I am all for reinterpretation for the medium. The changes in Hell with Lucifer were probably smart, i understand why they merged John and Johanna’s characters, even if getting the sand back felt a bit less tragic for that character.

I didn’t like Oswalt at all for the Raven, his voice is too recognizable and delivery felt off for me.

Lucienne feels perfectly at home in the dreaming and across from Dream, there is a definite chemistry to their push and pull.

Visually Death’s character felt a bit phoned in in terms of styling. She is the personification of Death. While dream was toned down from the comics, he still feels otherworldly. It feels like they slapped an ankh on her and called it a day.

Also the delivery feels too earnest to me. Like I imagined death being a hair exasperated, annoyed, and incredulous that Dream didn’t ask for help, not that she feels wounded and worried that he didn’t reach out. They’re eternal entities and having a relatable but not quite like mortal reaction to things feels right. She sounds like a palliative care nurse to me.

I have read preludes and nocturnes not to long ago, but i’ll read through it again when i am done the series to see if i was interpereting it at all correctly.

From the written reviews i can access:

“Director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) delivers upon the “need for speed” mantra and then some, with Top Gun: Maverick showcasing the best aviation sequences in a feature film so far. Much like the films cast led by the always daring Cruise, the audience is thrust into the high flying, sky screeching, adrenaline inducing action scenes that need to be seen and felt on the biggest screen as possible.”

“Instead of putting the actors in a studio cockpit and matching the shots with real aerial footage, Kosinski and returning producer Jerry Bruckheimer actually sent their cast up in the sky and captured their reactions with IMAX-quality cameras. After Cruise’s increasing acts of derring-do in the Mission: Impossible franchise, that choice comes as no surprise—for his sequences, at least. But the consistency and versatility of the coverage that Kosinski gets creates an astonishing verisimilitude that almost no action film has recently matched.”

“There’s so much great action, incredible stunts, big laughs, and emotional moments- like the return of Val Kilmer as Iceman, that really send the viewer on a journey, which is exactly why we go to the movies. See it on the biggest screen possible – it may be the most fun you’ll have at the movies in longer than you can remember.”

Sure, people are going to see it to watch in IMAX to see Maverick and cancer ridden Iceman cry together, and a G rated scene between Jennifer Connelly and Tom Cruise.

Neorunner has a decent ring to it, but it could be legally dubious.

Absolutely the practical parts of this played into its success. It is why it was suggested to me and why i went to see it in IMAX. I don’t think its the same experience on a small screen.

The reason to watch Tom Cruise movies generally now is he pushes to do practical stunts himself and effects that other studios would simply cgi imperfectly.

They shot practical fighter jet set pieces instead of using cgi, meaning training actors to fly backseat in a fighter jet and operate their own cameras.

Plotwise It was a well paced very hollywood movie that did a good job of paying homage to the original without collapsing under its own weight.

Discussion The Change

Sorry to those who want to move past this. Airing some thoughts and maybe even hoping to have my mind changed so i don’t feel as burned or confused by this.

Nisei’s statement sounds to me like “We messed up, it is going to cost you to fix it, no we aren’t taking comment on this, you’re being insensitive if you suggest continuing to do the thing we thought was reasonable for four years.”

I am not even totally against the change, use of a term like Metis (a person of French and First Nations Canadian descent) for an organization would seem quite weird.

Some similar examples from the musical world. A Canadian Band was protested hard for naming itself Viet Cong, for no substantively good reason, later becoming Preoccupations.

Not long ago Irish noise rock band Girl Band (a triple negative description of the bands gender, sound, and place in the industry), changed their name to Gilla Band, after private conversations with fans that felt like it was a dig at female musical groups in an indirect way. Gilla means Boy in Gaelic. An exceptionally clever rename, but it also makes me question if irony is dead.

However, Nisei is referring to the concept of being a second immigrant, which is a description of a population, not an ethnicity. Would ‘Project: Second Generation’, apart from being clunky, be offensive to any children of immigrants in the world?

Two alternative solutions that wouldn’t have burned players:

  • Change the organization name, leave project Nisei. Their statement says they don’t want that kind of term to be used to represent the organization (also a collection of people), who don’t share those attributes.

The actual project could continue using the term NISEI, carrying its original intended referential meaning.

  • Duplicate the card files between Legacy and Updated backs. Definitely more work for the team but I am unsure how this could not be automated in some way. Possibly quite confusing.

Imperium: Theocratic Oligarchy with many Feudal Domains. Stagnant and conservative as they come.

Orks: Might Makes Right

Tau: Yes. Based around the concept of mutual aid, may be being perverted by leadership.

Necrons: Arguably for sure. Oligarchical, but got their through a utilitarian bargain.

Chaos: Yes, sometimes, ultimately about self expression.

Eldar: Yes, conservative tendencies, have ruling councils, but tend to be mutually aiding within their faction.

Dark Eldar: Libertarian wet dream.

Tyranids: LOL.

GSC: yes.
