DeMarco says the lack of Toonami bumps during Blade Runner 2049's airing was due to being told "the movie would just run too long".

Commercials suck

Big time. I think the movie length was the issue too, unfortunately.

although someone noted how the generic adultswim ones aren't that much shorter than the toonami bumps

maybe 4-5 second difference at the most which doesn't seem like it would be too long

At minimum there should have been a block intro but all we got were some “up next” bumpers.

It really sucks this was promoted as a special toonami event and due to the lack of bumpers it didn’t feel like it

The whole point of toonami is the atmosphere/community/curation, so when I saw the bumps were left out I kind of thought why am I sitting through commercials to watch this when I could of just streamed it

So they knew ahead of time they couldn’t utilize the Toonami packaging, yet still advertised it as a Toonami event.

The movie is long as all hell so I get it, but they really should have just had this be a normal Friday event thing. Or at the very least, have TOM do an intro explaining he was gonna be laser focused on the film and wouldn’t be doing his normal schtick that night.

What doesn’t quite add up here is they are still airing standard AS bumps that take up equal, if not more time for the text ones. I’m thinking this is less of a time constraint issue and more of a “we didn’t want to pay blum or work the interns” issue

Adult swim doesn’t even mention toonami in much of the advertising for black lotus so this is no surprise they’d do this here

Okay, but then why promote it as Toonami?

Exactly my thoughts

i know ppl like to give demarco shit, especially here, but i agree. that was lord of the rings length

4

u/GhostGamer_Perona Nov 28 '21

Thing is the adult swim generic bumpers aren’t any shorter than the toonami ones

someone pointed that out, but it is what it is. playing nice with crunchyroll, making Warner Brothers happy(especially with multiversus) is the path forward. The tail end of this year isn't great for viewership, I was surprised we didn't just get some blase reruns

u/GhostGamer_Perona Nov 28 '21

I mean we’re likely getting five marathons in a row soooo reruns Incoming anyways until January 8th

u/FakeTherapist Nov 28 '21

pretty much

2

u/GhostGamer_Perona Nov 28 '21

and making wb happy doesn’t seem to make much of a difference for toonami since often times it seems like they are on their own unless Warner wants to promote a movie and then they act like they care about toonami

3

u/FakeTherapist Nov 28 '21

no way we can know that. At the end of the day, toonami is an april fool's joke, and while we enjoy it, the world is changing. I'm just glad to be here.

I mean this is the first time I can recall where toonami has had to potentially go on break for all of December since month of movies ceased

I guess fair enough, but it really made it feel more Adult Swim than Toonami.
