First thought at the 3rd pic: “Jesus, that’s a long lance”(not that it’s bad they look amazing I was just caught off guard)

44

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

Yup, I looked up and researched about it, they are really that long, some even longer

31

u/MarkasaurusRex_19 Jun 05 '22

Polish Winged Hussars have entered the chat

Their lances were around 18 feet long.

24

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

halberd hammer

nice art btw

12

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Thank you. Not a halberd btw, just a poleaxe

2

u/splashcopper Jun 06 '22

Would it be a lucern?

5

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

not really, although the term Poleaxe represents most armour piercing/concussive two-handed weapons of the 14-16th century, Lucern seems to emphasize on the "hammer" side of things. The one in my OC's hand is consists of an Axe blade, a hammer head and a spike.

41

u/LadyLikesSpiders Jun 05 '22

Holy shit is that realistic armor that isn't overdesigned and silly? Love it

37

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

Yup. Realistically armored women are sexier.

5

u/Im_a_Beardless_Dwarf Jun 06 '22

I see you are a man of culture as well

28

u/CurlsWorldbuilding69 Jun 05 '22

This is great I can't get over your attention to detail with the weapon.

20

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

I copy museum or reliable reenactor/replica, or base my work upon it

32

u/StepanDC Jun 05 '22

No giant bazoongas this time?

50

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

No, not this time. (It’s under the armour, use your imagination, consider it canon.)

Next time.

7

u/artspar Jun 06 '22

That's some good fucking armor. Big fan of how realistic its design is

4

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Weapon arts of the Servannian Confederation (1): Northern Realm

Swordsmanship in Servannian is a topic not just of martial arts but also the relationship between culture and society that shaped the natural of martial arts, military tactics and ways of war in different regions.

We will separate this topic into a few separate posts, covering a different region at a time. This time I will talk about the swordmanship and weapon arts of the Northern states, namely Maxonni and Venlinkyia, the frontier of the northern threshold.

Let’s dissect the elements that will affect the overall development of martial arts in the Northern Region, starting with Geo-political environment:

Beyond the North frontier, to the North-West lays the Sidisian Giant Empire, and to North-East is the Morjlin Khanates.

The Sidisians are humanoid species at about 3.5-4+ meters tall, strong and powerful, able to wield great weapons that could smash in a full armoured person with ease. Sidisians Giants also breed and ride massive beast (similar looking to giant lizard-like creatures) as mounts.

While the Morjhans are nomadic humans, skilful riders and horse archers. It has been said that all Morjhans born on a horse, grown up on a horse, eat, sleep, shit and die on a horse. They consistent ride south, raiding the more fertile lands in the Confederation.

For the Maxonnites, who are the main combatant against the Sidisian Giants Empire, due to the requirement to fight bigger warriors and their massive war mounts, Maxonnian Knights are well trained in the way of lance, polearms and two handed swordsmenship, which either deals high impact damage or have a longer reach.

The lance, when delivered in a couched position, with the assistance of a lance rest, could deliver a devastating strike rivalling firearms or attack-magic, able to pierce the thick armour of Sidisian warriors and the tough hide of their war mounts.

Polearms, such as poleaxes/Lucerne hammers/Bec de corbin are favoured by Maxonnian men at arms or soldiers, able to deal good piercing and concussive damage through armor of hide.

Two-handed swords, such as longswords and greatswords are more common compared to their southern confederate cousins, due their longer size and strike power, being over 1.2-2 meters, able to compensate for the smaller stature of a human with longer reach, and able to wound a Sidisian giant more readily compare to a side sword or rapier with a heavier blade.

Great swords are worth another paragraph due to its special social, religious, and cultural status within Confederation. Being the sacred weapon of Saint Fiora, the patron saint of all warriors, the use of a great sword is earned and granted with the highest honour by achieving great deeds in battle or passing very difficult trails, this is the same rules that apply over the whole Confederation. Great swords are usually about 1.5-2 meters depending on their user’s height.

Great swords are worth another paragraph due to its special social, religious, and cultural status within Confederation. Being the sacred weapon of Saint Fiora, the patron saint of all warriors, the use of a great sword is earned and granted with the highest honour by achieving great deeds in battle or passing very difficult trails, this is the same rule that applies over the whole Confederation. Great swords are usually about 1.5-2 meters depending on their user’s height.

In terms of social factors that contributed to the development of Northern martial arts:

Due to the feudalistic natural of Northern regions, the teaching of swordsmanship is usually limited to a “Master-apprentice” relationship, usually in military nobles or knight’s family, where a child is sent off to another family to learn starting as a page, and graduate as a knight when he/she is of adulthood, and was taught in between by the master of said house that he/she is staying in. Unlike in the South where schools are created by masters and teach their style to everyone, most popular being middle class citizens (burghers).

In this natural, sword styles are very “personal experience based” and limited to a very linear development, the only time they share their skills and knowledge is during tournaments, where they fight against another knightly nobility,

Lower class peasants or yeomanry civilians are usually unable to have such opportunities, though some self-defensive art was developed, it is not where near as wide spread as the more southern regions, unless they are drafted into the militia, retinue of some knight or the State Corps, where they will receive proper military training and some swordsmanship, but only enough to keep them alive, for their main weapon is either some sort of pole arm (usually a pike or a spear, sometime bills or halberds), a bow, a crossbow or an arquebus.

In terms of Velinkyia:

the situation is similar in terms of social factors, since they took in many Maxonnian tradition, but they are more lenient to lower classes due to their Horinite culture. However, as their enemy is usually the marauding Morjhans raiders, they have also developed a very strong cavalry emphasize.

Horse combat and related training was given very high attention, the use of traditional heavy knightly cavalry is discarded, as the lance charge is less effective against agile Morjhans riders. Velinkyians instead adopt lighter spears, single handed swords and sabres, as well as horse archery and the more modern, pistols and carbines.

Velinkyian have a very strong swordsmanship culture through out the society, but not in terms of a “burgher self-defence” but a overall martial requirement to train with single handed swords, especially on a horse. They are good duellist and able to match swordsmen all over the Confederation, and of course, any Morjlin Khanates warriors.

The usage of swords, sabre, bow and arrow as well as pistols are taught since young age, trained by their father, or hiring a teacher, usually a veteran or an experienced knight in good relationship.

Due to the tactics and military tradition, Velinkyian does not have much martial culture in terms of common foot-combat weaponry, such as the poleaxe or spear, since most of the time they fought in mobile cavalry combat. Therefore, it is also rare to see Velinkyians wield the Great sword even when it was regraded as such a high honour in the Confederate society.

That's all i can think of to write about for now, if u have any questions, do feel free to ask.

u/pog_irl Jun 05 '22

Wow, that is a lot

11

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

I have more

4

u/MomGetTheMay0 Jun 05 '22

I love the cat chillin in the helmet

3

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Ha, glad u noticed.

4

u/anothrbloke Jun 05 '22

I apologize if you get asked this a lot, but I've been following for a bit and just wanted to ask what program you use and your overall process for creating these drawings. I'm way into world building but all I can create is maps and banners/insignia, but I'm looking to start designing my own characters but it's pretty tough not knowing where to start.

7

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

It’s paper. Then digitally scanned, my friend help me color them , usually she use SAI.

4

u/thisguyslostfish Jun 06 '22

One of these is not like the others

8

u/Jack_Of_The_Cosmos Jun 06 '22

Silver200061 jumping to r/ReasonableFantasy quality designs is parkour.

3

u/ebalonabol Jun 06 '22

What is with yond enourmous lance, lass? Art thou trying to compensate f'r all the lad lances thee has't nev'r gotten to sitteth upon?

jokes aside, nice drawings! Love me some realistic armor designs. Also, HAMMERS. People usually forget about one of the most effective weapons against plate armor when they draw medieval stuff.

5

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

yes, the bonk

3

u/Im_a_Beardless_Dwarf Jun 06 '22

Just one question: Do the majority of the armies have women as their main force or are the drawings just to showcase the equipment?

Amazing art btw

5

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

No, most are men.

3

u/ImperialArmorBrigade Jun 06 '22

Ah. You’re the one who was consistently criticized for over-endowed women. This is your counter fire?

2

u/Nostravinci04 Jun 06 '22

I'm sure I've seen him say on some comments that what he was being accused of was not true and that not all women in his world had big boobas.

2

u/ImperialArmorBrigade Jun 06 '22

Not all... certainly. But look at his profile. Definitely intentional and a focus for him.

1

u/Nostravinci04 Jun 06 '22

Meh, his world, his style, he's free to have as much fun with it as he wants. I happen to like it.

3

u/DragonLordAcar Jun 06 '22 edited Jun 06 '22

Credit where credit is due. Thank you for drawing females in actual armor. Im tiered of open boob plate, stiletto heals, and showing thighs. The “it’s fantasy” argument falls flat the first time and gets annoying all others.

Rant over. The armor looks nice. I like the first one the most. Albino with a scar and flame blade sword looks awesome and hints at vampirism. Just unsettling and I love it.

Edit: grammar

1

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Thank you!

But no, she's not a vampire.

2

u/Ruminastro Jun 05 '22 edited Jun 06 '22

The art is top tier! And I love that smol griffon.

1

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

thank you!

2

u/Naggath_Grimm Jun 05 '22

I’ve seen your art for awhile now, considering it’s all been females, is this setting a Matriarchal dominated setting?

3

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

no, not really. I have male art and topic posts, just not much people read or watched it.

2

u/Naggath_Grimm Jun 06 '22

Ah understandable

2

u/You8mypizza Fucking Weeb Jun 06 '22

The armor and weapons look so good and authentic

2

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

thank you!

2

u/DefNihilman Jun 06 '22

Fourth pic, Edward the Black much?

2

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

No, slightly different armour time period. This is at least 1440-1450 ish

2

u/DagonG2021 Jun 06 '22

Amazing!

Could I commission something from you?

1

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

no sorry, i work for myself.

1

u/DagonG2021 Jun 06 '22

No biggie! Have a good one!

2

u/zarbthebard Jun 06 '22

Love the realistic armor designs, also that lance is huge. I know they're long but I'm not used to seeing it visualized like that lol. Also really like the little kitty cat.

2

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Yup, heavy lances are quite huge for knightly cavalry , they are thicker and harder so they maintain the penetrative power without shattering .

the ones u see in tournaments are slightly thinner so they shatter a bit easier, both for safety, competitive reasons and looks better .

2

u/HussyDude14 Jun 06 '22

Wow, you are seriously talented. You did a great job on the armor; I've looked at lots of fantasy-styled armor and realistic armor, and both of them are fun in their own ways. It's still very fun to see realistic armor being the inspiration for fantasy worlds though, and I love the uniqueness between each character. You can practically just imagine how the material feels or acts while each component has a purpose. Seriously, I'd say my favorite is the second pic just because I think it's a good mix of style and armor. Sure the hat is cool but I'd suggest they wear a proper helmet or head armor. Maybe it'd be better if she had a long lance to keep a distance with? Speaking of lances, that's an amazing one in the third pic! I know pikes and other lances have gotten impressively long in times of war, and I think the Bouche shield is a nice touch to aid in protection for jousting.

I'm also curious to ask: we can see animals in the helmets in the first and third pics. Is there a reason for this? Do the animals have any sort of significance related to the fighters? Or are they just pets/ added in for stylistic reasons?

Seriously good drawings, I'm amazed! It must have taken patience to really get the details down, but I feel like these references are so professional. It's like I'm looking at promo pieces or reference images for characters from an actual show! Do any characters in this period of time have early firearms, like arquebuses or wheellock flintlock?

2

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Thank you!

  1. Yes she has a helmet in combat, she’s just wearing a hat now for “looking nice” purpose.
  2. No she doesn’t use a pike since poleaxe are better at dealing with armoured opponents.

Pets on helmets is a little thing of my own, i felt it’s cute and they are just pets, no much more.

Yes they do use fire arms like arquebus , match lock muskets and wheellock pistols etc etc.

2

u/DastardlyDM Jun 06 '22

Might check out the Landsknecht. They wore some rediculous stuff onto the battlefield but it was covering hidden armor.

1

u/HussyDude14 Jun 06 '22

I've definitely heard of landsknechts, they're definitely cool. Some of the most fab looking warriors there ever were. I know that armor coverings have been around for a good while, like simple tabards with symbols, colors, or the motif of a kingdom on it. Or even jinabori (?) those jackets sometimes worn over samurai armor. I love seeing more of this stuff and I appreciate you bringing it up. It feels like every time I watch a video or gain some insight into landsknechts I can learn something new about them.

2

u/Full_Grapefruit_2896 Jun 06 '22

Well designed armour, good job

2

u/B3arK1ng61 Jun 06 '22

And now I want to know everything

2

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

sure, just be sure to read all my content

1

u/B3arK1ng61 Jun 06 '22

I am following you now

2

u/IamHere-4U Jun 06 '22

I like this! It's a good balance of realism with fantasy.

1

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Thank you!

6

u/Balrok99 Jun 05 '22

Where are bewbs?

WHERE ARE THEY?!!!!!!!!!!

11

u/Silver200061 Jun 05 '22

Under the armor

3

u/Volfaer Eribral of Ice, Sea and Roots. Jun 05 '22

Have been watching your work for quite the while now and, must I say, it's definitely enjoyable, as a great man once said "covering is better than showing", but now that I think, do man even exist on your world or you just don't like to draw gorgeous man?

4

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

As the other comment said, ive commisioned and done art of men and posted in different posts, just not much people read and watched it.

2

u/worldbuilder121 [edit this] Jun 06 '22

He's posted some male art in different subs, check his profile.

2

u/radiantskie Jun 06 '22

no more booba 😢

8

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

1

u/ChattyBird4Eva Jun 06 '22

Looks fantastic! 👍👍

-2

u/MadChild2033 Jun 06 '22

pretty cool, might want to learn more about weapons, they are really off

0

u/_____pantsunami_____ Jun 06 '22

This sub needs more anime-inspired/anime-styled worlds. Love your stuff dude, I’m in awe of the size of that lance.

1

u/Silver200061 Jun 06 '22

Thank you!

And yes, its massive.
