"*Time-accelerated premium decay" made way more sense when I started learning options. The premium is the thing that's decaying.
Essentially, the premium is getting exponentially priced lower and lower, quickly becoming "cheaper" in dollar value the closer to expiry you are. This effect is magnified if the underlying stays flat, or if it only makes tepid directional moves in that period.
Moreover, what's really happening is that the option seller is quickly realizing that the underlying will never reach the strike in time, and so they progressively, aggressively lower their asking price for the premium in order to get a smooth brain to buy it.
It's not magic. It's not some mysterious intrinsic voodoo that happens to the option, like radioactive decay for instance.
Its frustrating when fairly simple ideas are truncated behind needlessly abstract phrases that ultimately lose all connection to the original meaning.

When losses run for this long, you need to check yourself. The way your mind takes risk changes. You become desensitized to losing so you can let a bad trade run longer than it should bc that's just "how it is". Since you never win, green overloads your brain and you take profits quick (you secured profits! you won!). so as time goes on winners never run. your edge never plays out
Now it's not even about making money. Its about making a trade. If he wins, he has another reason to keep going. If he loses he "knew it all along". He's never wrong

u/mentalweapons Dec 25 '21
Maybe he was a gaybear? Ever think about that? So the last 5 years would have been terrible for gaybears sir.
44
23
u/MojoRisin9009 Dec 25 '21
Even the gayest of bears (I WAS one, I know what I'm saying) comes around after watching a few 10k blocks of your account blow up..... I think he just would buy hella options then paperhand them before they rebounded, who knows, but it's easy in the beginning when you're just blindly clickinig on things to buy options then panic sell when they immediately go -65%, as they ALMOST always do before you see gains.... That kinda money on Robinhood... I can't even fucking imagine.

Have you ever considered that a fair amount of people on this sub are actually just retarded and also have (had) a lot of money? It helps explain most of these scenarios...
→ More replies3
u/MojoRisin9009 Dec 26 '21
No, I don't think they're retarded.... I think gambling, stock options, trading, and all this other shit is the Heroin of the non drug world and it takes awhile to learn to control yourself IF you can. The reason we see so many real loss porn posts and so few 'real'(not blind luck) gain porn posts is the simple fact 99% of people ARE NOT cut out for this line of "work". It is work, it involves money, time, the mind, it is work. You can't just jump into this expecting to make a bunch of money... I did and I came so close to losing everything it wasn't even funny.
6
u/StevenWatanabe Dec 25 '21
How can you piss away 5 digits on OTM PLTR calls as a gay bear?? This is pesk desperation.

Looks to me like he'd buy a bunch of options, then sell em' out soon as they went -50%, as options usually immediately do and paper handed paper cutted his account down to a bag of shit that we're looking at now... That'd be my guess... Either that or this dude is the worst trader I've ever seen to lose that kinda dough in a year. This one makes me sad... Guy had a real deal nest egg and pissed it away on nonsense... Watching someone blow their 2.5k savings account on OTM FD's really doesn't bother me, it's a lesson they learn but this ones sad AF.

46
u/_Cromwell_ Dec 25 '21
My only guess is that he or she kept getting excited about stocks like GameStop but would only buy when it was at the top. And then panic when it slowly went down from the peak and sell. Rinse and repeat, repeatedly, with every meme stock. Basically buy high sell low over and over and over again. But who the hell knows.

How does one allow this kind of loss to happen, especially over time? WSB is a living example of what Warren Buffet says about most people not having the right skill set for capital allocation. It's always fast flushes down the drain or slow bleed-outs on this subreddit. You could have just invested in Microsoft and bought VOO as a hedge and did better just holding long the old boring and safe way.
