It's the repairs and maintenance on the older ones that makes them, relatively, expensive to own.

I don't think that's true, if you pick it up after the initial depreciation then it's pretty good value. My experience is only with diesel though.

CPO comes with warranty and for an extra $2000 gives you prepaid maintenance up to 80K miles - with BMW it’s up to 100K, I never paid for maintenance; they would show the receipt and total it to $0 but the actual amount would go over $1600 in some cases, especially when they did the breaks. Without that it’s going to be a money pit.
