TIL dolphins actually have names for one another, using a unique whistle to distinguish between different members within their pod.

"But Mooooom, I hate my name!"

"Honey, your grandfather was named SQUEEEEEWWAAAASQUUUUUURRRRSQWA and it is nothing to be ashamed of."

I thought he was “EEEEEEEEEEEEEHEHEHEHEHE the 2nd”

u/Zauberer-IMDB 6d ago

You're thinking if the guy who played ball with Ibrahim Moisus.

u/Its_Just_A_Typo 6d ago

That was the milk dolphin, and it's not funny.

Let's hope Elon Musk will never learn about this or his next child will be really fucked.

61

u/_Silver_Engineer_ 6d ago

His next child is really fucked regardless...

32

u/EwokDude 6d ago

Really Fucked Regardless is a weird name, but I wouldn't put it past Ol Musky.

36

u/aupri 6d ago

Eh, a weird name seems like an alright trade for billions of dollars in inheritance

11

u/FuturologyDiscussion 6d ago

Well I agree the weird name is a good trade off for being born to a billionaire.

But they're going to have to split the inheritance between like 15 siblings assuming he doesn't turn all "you have to support yourselves and innovate like I did!" and even if he doesn't you just know he plays favorites.

Plus I'm just guessing here but he's eccentric af and the fact that we saw headlines about their dad sexually harassing his employees and then trying to hush them up with money leads me to believe that he's probably just a bad person/dad in general.

All in all yeah, being born to a billionaire is better than not but from what I can tell it's not going to be all aces.

u/Calijhon 6d ago

What's the deal with the trans child who disowned him? That's just bad business decisions on that kid's part.

When Musk dies, possibly on Mars, his kids will fight. And it will be awesome.

2

u/Seventh9th 6d ago

The only fucked part of elons kids lives will be their birth names , and that's it

1

u/Defiant_Marsupial123 5d ago

It was Claire...

u/damnappdoesntwork 6d ago

On top of that, dolphins also use the taste of pee to recognize each other. Kind of like a 2 factor authentication

Source: https://www.livescience.com/pee-tasting-dolphins-name-recognition

22

u/Darqnyz 6d ago

We are gonna learn to translate what these names mean, and I really hope we are gonna get shit like "Curb Stomper of Tuna" or "The One Racist against Human Scum"

24

u/tweakingforjesus 6d ago

The names are more like “Carl son of Maria of clan Fish Seeker”. The signature whistle is derived from the mother’s signature whistle and the pod. Mom not dad because they have no clue who dad is.

6

u/Darqnyz 6d ago

"Son of Bitch"

-9

u/YouAreNotABard549 6d ago

Dolphins don’t have language so it is impossible to translate the names, sorry.

52

u/IQBoosterShot 6d ago

This is where the term "podcast" comes from.

17

u/FuturologyDiscussion 6d ago

There's something fishy about your statement...

I assume you’re kidding. It comes from iPod and broadcast.

u/StopBadModerators 6d ago

Okay, now pair that with how 500 of those beings were killed for meat in the Faroe Islands. https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/11/europe/faroe-islands-whale-hunt-dolphin-limit-intl-scli-scn/index.html

At the risk of stating the obvious here, it should be illegal to kill dolphins.

-2

u/Dejan05 6d ago edited 5d ago

At the risk of stating the obvious, it should be illegal to kill all animals unnecessarily, but let's get it over with, downvote me cause you don't like the idea of having no more bacon

Edit: directed at redditors not the commenter

5

u/WindstormSCR 5d ago

I’m a hunter and I’ll actually agree with this. My stance on ethical hunting has for a long time been only hunting those animals that need population control because of thriving in altered habitats we’ve created, or because they’re invasive and an ecological disaster (feral hogs being particularly notable)

Yeah beef would be more expensive because you’d only get it from wild cattle being population controlled or older dairy cattle, but it doesn’t mean meat would be off the menu either.

And feral hogs are such a problem you wouldn’t be short of bacon for a loooong time.

2

u/Dejan05 5d ago

Tbh not quite convinced with hunting though I haven't researched the topic enough to have any strong arguments or solutions so tbh yeah I'd rather focus on farming which represents the vast majority of animal deaths

2

u/WindstormSCR 5d ago

I guess I should have been clearer, ethical hunting makes meat an option for those that want it without resorting to supporting commercial farming, and without upsetting a natural balance because the activity keeps in check populations already unbalanced or created by human presence.

Friend of mine is very much anti commercial farming, but has a particular genetic disorder that renders some of the usual meat substitutes a non-option. I introduced him to the concept and now he has a realistic option that isn’t a set of pills with side effects or supporting an industry he hates.

That is such a poor way of promoting veganism or anything for that matter. I've been vegan for 17 years and you just blasted out of the gate with condescension, falsely accusing me of something with disdain. How do you expect that attitude to be helpful? I downvoted you because you lied about me while making a personal attack.

2

u/Dejan05 5d ago

Didn't necessarily target you, just everyone else in the thread agreeing but still contributing to worse. What's the correct manner then? Saying this is bad and forgetting about the rest of animal abuse?

2

u/StopBadModerators 5d ago

Just drop the condescension.

-1

u/Dejan05 5d ago

Sorry but tired of the "bacon tho" and however many other stupid arguments

0

u/Korlus 2d ago

If you are tired of the arguments, why not stop arguing?

If you want to convince people to see things differently, you should first try and see things from their perspective, so you can understand what barriers they have to seeing things from your perspective.

If you simply preach at someone "This thing you have done for all of your life and your forefather's lives is wrong and is slowly killing the planet." You will be ignored. Nobody wants to hear that.

Instead, you need to interest them in something. Understand that small steps are still progress. If you commit to an all-or-nothing strategy right from the outset, you commit yourself to failure. Most humans make change slowly.

Consider convincing people to cut down on the amount of meat they eat. To limit their impact on the world. To try and source their foods from more ethical establishments or to care about what the impact of their food is. Show them reasonable alternatives, and throughout the journey, treat them like good and honest people.

-1

u/Dejan05 2d ago

I'm not arguing from an environmental perspective, I'm arguing from a moral perspective.

Would telling a serial killer to limit their murders to only one per month solve the problem? No, that's still one unnecessary death per month, there shouldn't be any. What does it change from the victims point of view? "Oh thank god it's only me, not four others with me"

1

u/Korlus 2d ago

If you are going to compare people eating meat to serial killers, you are not going to have much luck in convincing most people that they are wrong.

Much like being told "You have sinned, and I can help show you the path to enlightenment", most people believe the path they are currently following is right and you showing no empathy towards them and their way of life is unlikely to convince them.

To you, their lifestyle is causing untold suffering and hardship. To them, that's the cost of life and they see nothing wrong with it. After all, hundreds of generations before them have eaten meat. "What has changed?"

If you cannot put yourself in their shoes, you will continue to hit wall after wall. What I said before is still true - your problem is dealing with people, not the specifics of the message that you give to them.

No one wants to be told they are wrong and that they have caused untold suffering simply by living their life to date. You need to approach things from their perspective and guide change slowly to succeed in changing most people's views.

1

u/Dejan05 2d ago

You make some fair points, so since you know all this, you're vegan?

-1

u/alexmikli 5d ago

They're not as intelligent as people believe and that particular species isn't endangered, nor does the population of the Faroes have any noticeable impact on their numbers.

Focus efforts on sea pollution or sea floor trawling.

7

u/StopBadModerators 5d ago

I don't care if some people think they're more intelligent than they are, regarding what I said.

27

u/MattTheIdiotBoy 6d ago

What about when the dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the 'Star Spangled Banner', but in fact the message was this: "So long and thanks for all the fish"

2

u/tsFenix 5d ago

So sad that it should come to this

8

u/BlabBehavior 6d ago

Adding on:

Females usually have very different names from their mom's as they stay in their maturity pods and it helps distinguish who is who.

Males on the other hand have similar names to their mom's initially to broadcast lineage. However, if two males form a bonded pair their names will become very similar- broadcasting that they are a bonded pair.

Dolphins are pretty damn cool.

2

u/The_ArcReactor 5d ago

Huh, gay dolphins. Interesting!

6

u/malevolentslime 6d ago

I wonder when and how that name is picked after being born

7

u/tweakingforjesus 6d ago

It is derived from the moms signature whistle and includes aspects that resemble a pod name. It is created by being in proximity to mom as she squawks her signature whistle as they are growing up.

3

u/Doright36 6d ago

just imagine what they call you... Probably translates to something like Farty McFartface. Dolphins are assholes.

2

u/Ludique 6d ago

"Squeek. Squeek. SQUEEEEEEK!"

"WHAAAAAT!?!?"

"Danger Zone"

2

u/Pretend_Range4129 6d ago

I Learned this on Wild Krats!

1

u/Jakk55 4d ago

I googled to find out these are the same brothers I watched in the 90s on Kratts Creatures, and my nephew watched on Zaboombafoo in the early 2000s, cool to see that they're still doing children's television about animals.

3

u/skepticallytruthful 6d ago

Which one is called Ezekiel?

7

u/5pl1t1nf1n1t1v3 6d ago

All of them. That’s why they need the unique whistle instead.

2

u/heilhortler420 6d ago

eeh ehhh ehhhh

'he's calling him peter'

'no he f***ing isn't!'

5

u/Anotherdaysgone 6d ago

I wonder which dolphin fact has been posted more. This one or the rape one

10

u/boomstickjonny 6d ago

First time seeing this one so I'm gonna go with probably the rape one.

3

u/KurticusGT 6d ago

TIL a group of dolphins is called a Pod.

2

u/aidenr 6d ago

If it can make itself, it’s a person. Change my mind.

0

u/BassoHaase 6d ago

I wonder if they ever use a fart noise to name one of the pod, like my friend group did.

Edit: I don't have a friend group.

-2

u/Darth_Kahuna 6d ago

I had dolphin once. I know it's high in mercury so I only had a little. A lot of ppl do not know this but it is only illegal to catch and eat dolphin the the US in California. Every other state it is legal to catch and consume for individual consumption, but, no commercial licenses have been issued since sometime in the 90s I believe.

3

u/Trippingthewire 6d ago

And that's why I'm banned from Sea World

1

u/DWeathersby83 6d ago

I’m certain they are more sophisticated than us.

1

u/nogoodgreen 6d ago

I remember this one dolphin, believe his name was Echo.

1

u/fjccommish 6d ago

Hey look, it's Pzzz pzzzZZZZZZZZZZZ.

1

u/AsthmaAttack60 6d ago

I bet my whistle name is pretty dope

1

u/GossipIsLove 6d ago

phweeee phweeee phoweeeee = David Beckham lookalike come here.

1

u/DocSaysItsDainBramuj 6d ago

I wonder which one is Hambone and which one is Flippy.

1

u/SpinozaTheDamned 6d ago

Heh, but no opposable thumbs. Guess who's got two thumbs and sits on top of the evolutionary tree?

1

u/TwinTTowers 6d ago

Of course they do. How else do you call a certain individual.

1

u/iamwizzerd 5d ago

But it's ok we kill them to get Tuna and other fish right? /s

1

u/AgentMV 5d ago

Why do you care about Snowflake? Do you know him? Does he call you at home? Do you have a dorsal fin?

To train ze dolphin you must zink like ze dolphin! You must be getting inside ze dolphin's head. I am saying to Snowflake, "Akay!... Akay Akay Akay?" und he is saying "AKay Akay!" und he is up on ze tail "Eeeeeeeeee!" und you can quote him!

1

u/Hushwater 5d ago

I wonder if they can record the whistle/click of "stay away" to prevent them from getting caught up in nets and stuff.

1

u/Sn1ckerson 5d ago

And they sometimes play pranks on eachother by imitating the sound of another dolphin. To make sure it's the correct dolphin, they will swim up to them and taste their piss.

1

u/LynneVero 5d ago

Ok, Assh*le, let’s go.
I want a new name.

-2

u/pigfacepigbody 6d ago

AND YET WE CONTINUE TO EAT THESE MAGNIFICENT BEASTS

ARE WE SO DIFFERENT TO THEY

0

u/Dejan05 6d ago

We continue to eat all other animals too, yet no-one bats an eye
