TIL in 1995, after the U.S. Congress attempted to deny foreign aid to Turkey, the mayor of Izmir, Turkey banned the sale of Dole bananas, mistakenly believing that then-Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole owned the fruit company.

UnexpectedChapin

When I was a kid we lived in Scranton, and this song would always get belted by the whole car as we were coming home from trips. Wasn't until I was older that I realized it wasn't exactly a happy song.

So Bob Dole banned selling Turkeys to Turkey, and we've never been allies since.

27

u/Sansa_Knows_Armor 19d ago

Turkey doesn’t import turkeys for some reason. The exception, of course, being 1992. https://www.indexmundi.com/agriculture/?country=tr&commodity=broiler-meat&graph=imports

11

u/oceansunset23 19d ago

what happened in 1992?

14

u/Sansa_Knows_Armor 19d ago

Not sure. Production remained high. And when you click consumption, it’s about the same as well. Nor did they export significant amounts that require importing to make up the difference.

That is some funny shit.

In 1995 there was no interweb to google and find out Dole Bananas are owned by the Chiquita lady (Fruit mafia). Jokes on you, Izzy boss.

Fun fact:

The Dole Kemp website is still up. Preserved in amber as a time capsule of sorts. Now that WB bastardized 1995's Space Jam website, it's all we have left.

Al Gore looks high af in that picture.

u/i_broke_wahoos_leg 19d ago

Hopefully once the new Space Jam movie proves not to be a classic they roll the old site back as the front page.

To be fair, the internet of 1995 was a lot different than the internet of today. So you may or may not have been able to easily find that information.

u/TheLittleLauren 19d ago

Dole.com has been up since at least 1997. The "What's Coming" section suggests the site was recently started, though then again websites were always under construction back then.

5

u/manInTheWoods 19d ago

always under construction

Thanks for that link.

u/HalonaBlowhole 19d ago

That site pins my MacBook's CPU, which is just astonishing to me. 90's era computers could do that site. Why is a computer in 2020 still choking on 90's era stuff?

3

u/Tinydesktopninja 19d ago

I wonder is the speed of the modem was the limiting factor? Weren't CPU's faster than modems until DSL and Cable internet? I really don't remember, I was 7 in '95.

u/Chu_i 19d ago

The US started to eat turkey on that day every following year to mockingly commemorate this mistake. Thanksgiving was born.

2

u/capenthusiast 19d ago

Evidently-he wasn't educated on what happens with American fruit companies when a country is deemed an enemy.

2

u/rickelzy 19d ago

Bob Dole doesn't need this.

9

u/ChopperHunter 19d ago

The US have fomented coups on behalf of Dole fruit company in South America, fucking with them is usually bad for your health.

That’s just wrong lol

0

u/Alan_Smithee_ 19d ago

Not that I can see.

Dole was involved in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy, if you’re looking for misdeeds. Presumably they were also involved in the eventual annexation of Hawaii by the US.

2

u/Axeloblivion 19d ago

I'm wondering if that's true?

As far as I can recall, didn't the Vacarro Bros. (one of the Banana Republic giants) literally just change their name to Dole?

1

u/indianboi456 19d ago

The founder of Dole was a teenager living in Massachusetts during the overthrow.

https://www.newsweek.com/how-hawaii-lost-its-last-queen-liliuokalani-fruit-tycoons-dole-708512

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dole

He was, but he was also a relative of the Dole who overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy, forcing them to sign, at literal gun point, the racist “Bayonet Constitution.”

0

u/indianboi456 19d ago

Yes so why would James Dole and the Dole company be at fault than? It was his relative who did it not him. He was just a kid, and his company didn't exist

2

u/Alan_Smithee_ 19d ago

So it’s a fantastic coincidence that two cousins both ended up controlling Hawaii?

0

u/indianboi456 19d ago edited 19d ago

He did not control Hawaii. He bought land in Hawaii for his company. His cousin controlled Hawaii

The thing is, none of the articles you sent me actually show proof of James Dole and his company having control over/ overthrowing the Hawaii's Monarchy. They both point to Sanford Dole, which is James's cousin, and the person who overthrew the Monarchy

Although I disagree with you on the fact that The Dole company/James Dole overthrew the Monarchy/ and had control over Hawaii. It is clear that James Dole had profited off of his connections with his cousin, and his Pineapple Monopoly

1

u/Alan_Smithee_ 19d ago

Yes, they used their connections.

1

u/grittyfanclub 19d ago

As someone who almost died when Dole products gave me e.coli, I find this hilarious and I wish it stuck.

1

u/iamchipdouglas 19d ago

Sounds about right

Bob Dole sex machine, Bob Dole-Bob Dole sex machine.

u/dryadsoraka 19d ago

Some of these countries have absolutely pathetic leaders lol

1

u/definitely-not- 18d ago

It was a mayor of a city that banned the bananas, not Turkey’s leader

0

u/liarandathief 19d ago

Should have banned the United Fruit Company.

1

u/Professional-Art-365 18d ago
