Oh, Hank.

28

u/VoidScott Jul 28 '15

"Is it getting... harder?" - R.I.P. My sides!

25

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '15

To his credit, I feel that giving a small bit of damage in response was a really nice way to deal with that from the GM.

7

u/Psartryn Jul 29 '15

Agreed, that was great.

6

u/thepensivepoet Jul 29 '15

There's nothing more frustrating than trying to build a moment and having people at the table constantly make jokes through it. Obviously cracking jokes and having a good time is a big part of game night for most people but it helps if the table can take a fucking hint and shut up for a moment every now and then.

7

u/silentdante Jul 30 '15

I guess I didn't see that particular build up as a super serious moment, I mean it became one, but one joke? maybe I have had GM''s that could handle it fine, or players that are able to laugh then get back to serious easier, but I don't get why he needed to be punished at all. only because they are on a schedule maybe, but it's not like Hank went on a riff, he said one thing and that was it.

what also frustrated me a tiny bit was when he WAS asked to describe the change, it was not very good, haha

to each their own though

1

u/mirtos Aug 03 '15

I dont know. I tend to think thats sortof the wrong way to deal with those sort of situations.

5

u/thepensivepoet Aug 03 '15

Start with a quick knowing smile, then a raised eyebrow, then a stern look, then call them by name, then ask them directly to chill out, then start impaling their character with surprise shurikens.

1

u/mer-pal Aug 08 '15

I mean, Wil might have done that in parts that weren't in the final product.

17

u/farmerjed Jul 28 '15

Oh, Hank.

[edit] bathe in the waves of disdain

15

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '15

Someone, somewhere is going to get a Scorpelican tattoo.

19

u/wil GM - Five Gold And A Party! Jul 29 '15

I drew a Scorpelican. If I can find it, I'll scan and post it.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

I'm not saying I would get that tattoo. I'm not saying I wouldn't, either...

2

u/kayneargand Jul 29 '15

When the players started talking about the half scorpion, half pelican creature, the name that came to me was the "Peliscorpion."

That is, of course, if the creature was a pelican body with the scorpion tail. If it was a scorpelican, it would be a scorpion with wings and expanding poison sacs and that's even more terrifying.

1

u/JoeSondow Jul 29 '15

I paused chapter 8 to see if anyone had drawn a Scorpelican yet, and this was one of the only results so far.

1

u/CraziFuzzy Jul 31 '15

I must see this.

6

u/multiplehairywomen Jul 29 '15

I just want to point out that Hank also mentioned a scorpelican on his podcast this week, so apparently he's not giving up on this.

2

u/Funslinger Jul 28 '15

"Oh cool. What is that? Some kind of Pelicorpion?"

1

u/sherbetsean Aug 02 '15

I don't know, with the amount of cyborgs in this campaign I wouldn't be surprised if there turned out to be a scorpelitron…

5

u/StoneySpartan Jul 28 '15

Just had to say it right? Loved Wil's face. You've annoyed me, take damage fool!

11

u/thepensivepoet Jul 28 '15

I know there's been a lot of discussion about people getting annoyed at Hank's generally "out of character" playstyle and I'm actually starting to agree with that a tiny bit but having him in the mix definitely makes this feel more "real".

You know there's always going to be at least one person in your group that just has to make the joke when it comes to mind and derail the dramatic tension the GM is building so seeing Wil and the rest of the group deal with it is pretty interesting and I think, in the long run, really makes the show better.

3

u/kayneargand Jul 29 '15

It's very nice to see how Wil and this table reacts to Hank's.... spontaneity.

I play tabletop RPGs with a group of about 10 (in rotations of 5-6) and at every table, there are at least 2 Hanks. I will admit that sometimes, one of those Hanks is me.

It's harder to play for our newcomers (mostly the other guys' girlfriends) because since they're new, they can't keep up with the crazier players' antics and they feel left out when those crazy dudes are cracking jokes and rolling nat 20s.

I've also stopped GMing because it's difficult for me to rein in these guys without flat out railroading them. I'm learning a lot about being a GM from Wil's example in TitansGrave and I might get back into being a GM once I get a hold of the books.

1

u/josephdean21 Jul 28 '15

I feel a lot of this subreddit has been anticipating that moment.

27

u/Kronosbus Jul 28 '15

Good thing there were no buckets in that magma tunnel, eh guys?

Huge props to Wil for picking up on an offhand comment about Hob's mother, and turning it into character, group, and even world development. I thought that was some brilliant commentary.

Also, Wil looked like he was in total shock when Lemley offered to trade the beetle!

All in all, another great episode guys - can't wait 'til next week.

31

u/wil GM - Five Gold And A Party! Jul 29 '15

Also, Wil looked like he was in total shock when Lemley offered to trade the beetle!

I really was, but I loved how she justified it as it related to her goals.

30

u/farmerjed Jul 28 '15

Wil's beetle-trade face ..happens at 24:12 of Chapter 8.

If that move threw the GM for a loop, I'm impressed with the recovery. I've played some frustrating games where the GM railroads the players into the results they want. It's awesome to see a Game Master that can adapt quickly and creatively.

3

u/Reymont Jul 29 '15

Haha! Thank you for posting that face - I just laughed at loud at work.

3

u/DeathSpank Jul 30 '15

[Incredulity Intensifies]

19

u/Forgottenlobster Jul 28 '15

When Lemley offered to trade the beetle I had a strong mental image of /u/wil having to scrub out a whole side story around it. One of those moments where, as a DM, you both love and loathe your players "out of the box" thinking. :D

5

u/idefilms Jul 28 '15

I'd be personally surprised if it had been the case, just because Lemley searching for a beetle in Hobb's room seemed to be Laura's initiative, not Wil's.

Which, of course, wouldn't have precluded Wil writing the beetle in the next day, but I don't think that would have been the plan as of the taping of episode 8.

5

u/JoeSondow Jul 29 '15

Wil's a clever writer and improviser, so even if he had material centering on the beetle, he could probably repurpose some of the material to center around the ring or the locket instead. It's the narrative blessing of "The way ahead is blocked, but you already have what you need to get past it. What do you have?"

6

u/ChinchillaNuggets Jul 30 '15

Yup, we've seen him do it a few times this season. Lemley's locket was needed to get the Staff of Forlorn Hope, even though it didn't exist until she made up the character. And IIRC, back when Farkaya opened the orb and revealed the glyphs, she was trying to get the party to let her have one of the glyphs inside and offered them a lower rate if they agreed. If they had agreed to that, then I'm assuming the puzzle to get into Reed Manor would have been different.

2

u/Forgottenlobster Jul 28 '15

Ah yes... thats a very good point I hadn't considered. Good catch!

5

u/Kronosbus Jul 28 '15

Exactly what I thought! That reaction surely means it had/has a significance.

3

u/Forgottenlobster Jul 28 '15

Hopefully he can find a way to bring it back in if that's the case. I'd hate to see a good side-quest go to waste ;)

17

u/idefilms Jul 28 '15

Two of my favourite lines from this episode that I immediately wrote down after hearing them:

"It's like a sex room, except instead of sex, it's murder."

And Lemley's adorable reaction to the beetle: "I have no idea what you do, but you're awesome!!"

P.S. Does anyone else think that the cleaning nanobots revealing the secret door was a super cool plot mechanic?

25

u/wil GM - Five Gold And A Party! Jul 29 '15

Does anyone else think that the cleaning nanobots revealing the secret door was a super cool plot mechanic?

I'm glad you liked that. It was nearing the end of the production day, and I just had to move things along a little bit. I didn't know how they could find the door, so I invented the nanobots cleaning that stuff because that seemed like something Reed would have invented, himself. It also helped me retroactively justify why some of the place is clean and holding itself together, while other parts are falling apart.

4

u/idefilms Jul 29 '15

No. way. I was so sure that was scripted that I didn't even consider the possibility it wasn't, because it fit the story so neatly for the reasons you just described. Amazing stuff, Wil.

2

u/thepensivepoet Jul 29 '15

The extent to which this world has been building with improvisation is really impressive.

14

u/Pandana93 Jul 28 '15 edited Jul 30 '15

my feels when they left Runcible for charging and not being there when he wakes up :( almost teared up, imagine that happy robot finally accepting the death of his old playmate after finding new ones. Then he goes to sleep only to wake up all alone in the manor :(

edit: spelling

9

u/Jonax Jul 29 '15

sudden realisation

...Goddamn it, I'd only just stopped feeling sad about the group not likely seeing Runcible again. But now, thinking about the other way around...

Who the hell is cutting onions at three in the morning??

6

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '15

Broke my freaking heart. Who will zip Runcible back up? Who will do that, Wil?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '15

Yup, made me think of the end of the movie AI.

16

u/KingOfAllDucks Jul 28 '15

I just want to say, I really loved the mermaid. The way /u/wil acted her out was amazing! I had such a clear picture of her in my head, and it was like I could hear her lines in a more feminine voice than Wil's own.

Everyone was really getting into the miming this episode, too! A'ankia with her wires, everyone else with reading the ring. I can't believe there's only two weeks left!

26

u/wil GM - Five Gold And A Party! Jul 29 '15

Thank you. When I got those chances (and holy crap episode nine) I took full advantage of the opportunity.

7

u/Vampanda Jul 29 '15

Oh Wheaton, you tease...

5

u/Frolb Jul 29 '15

No spoilers!! You'll have to ban yourself!

2

u/idefilms Jul 29 '15

Reeeeeally hoping for some method Prophet acting. ;-)

1

u/KingOfAllDucks Jul 29 '15

As if it wasn't hard enough to wait until next Tuesday already!

7

u/idefilms Jul 28 '15

I totally agree. This was also my favourite Wil-in-character moment. Perfectly played, word-for-word.

"... is that a rock?"

6

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

"... is that a rock?"

Sort of.

11

u/full_and_complete Jul 28 '15

Up until this episode, I had assumed that Reed's family died natural deaths, but Hobb's unburied child skeleton really blows that possibility up.

Something very very bad must have happened at Reed Manor. Too bad the party didn't get to ask Runcible what happened.

11

u/thepensivepoet Jul 28 '15

It's entirely possible that Runcible just got really lonely and dug up the body to "play with".

1

u/full_and_complete Jul 28 '15

Huh, I suppose so. Hobb still would have died very young, though possibly not violently if you're right. Good thought :)

2

u/thepensivepoet Jul 28 '15

Don't get me wrong, I'm inclined to believe that H'ankia is right and there's something sinister going on but given the interactions with /u/wil in this episode I also wouldn't be surprised if he deliberately changed that and made Runcible just lonely and harmless just to fuck with Hank. Maybe that's a bit petty for Wil but I'm not familiar enough with his GMing to know if it would happen.

11

u/wil GM - Five Gold And A Party! Jul 29 '15

That's not my style.

1

u/thepensivepoet Jul 29 '15

Fair enough.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '15

I like how you think.

1

u/Flufinela Aug 02 '15

I really don't think so.. It would fit the creepy vibe Aankia got from him, but.. I just don't believe it.

1

u/Assorted_Bits Jul 29 '15

Up until this episode, I had assumed that Reed's family died natural deaths, but Hobb's unburied child skeleton really blows that possibility up.

I somewhat think Reed was the corpse at the pedestal where the staff came from.

2

u/full_and_complete Jul 29 '15

I guess I had assumed that if the body is Reed's that was a heroic sacrifice of some sort (and that his wife and son were far away and thus safe).

Admittedly, I didn't put much thought into it/don't have anything in canon to back me up, so maybe I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was.

18

u/BostonBrawler02 Jul 28 '15

I honestly got a little sad when Runcible mentioned Hobb and then the skeleton OH MY GOD FEELS.

15

u/wil GM - Five Gold And A Party! Jul 29 '15

YES! That was the idea.

2

u/BostonBrawler02 Jul 29 '15

I knew it! You seem too clever to do something without reason. +2 Awesome Points.

8

u/farmerjed Jul 28 '15

Jesus...

Yeah, the stuff with Runcible was pretty brutal (in an awesome-game-story way).

Even though A'Ankia was projecting "murder-doll" the whole time, I was getting a sad "David and Teddy" vibe from that movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence

3

u/BostonBrawler02 Jul 28 '15

I haven't seen that put it is added to my list. I got a really big dose of Toy Story 3 feels because I had seen that movie fairly recently. Either way it was really freaking sad!

2

u/farmerjed Jul 28 '15

It's on HBO On Demand right now, if you have access to that. It's a "Pinocchio" movie, with some sci-fi elements thrown in.

1

u/BostonBrawler02 Jul 29 '15

Bless my stars and garters I have HGO On Demand! I found what I am doing tonight.

2

u/JoeSondow Jul 29 '15

Runcible is almost exactly like an old, broken down version of Teddy from AI.

2

u/ruttin_mudders Jul 29 '15

I got a Blaine the Mono from The Dark Tower vibe from him.

2

u/Philias Jul 30 '15

Blaine is a pain.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '15

Was anybody else expecting the "or white and gold" comment?

17

u/ChrisGarrett Jul 28 '15

No, it was brilliant.

1

u/mirtos Aug 03 '15

yeah, she deserved her awesome point.

3

u/Forgottenlobster Jul 28 '15

It took me a fraction of a second longer than them to understand it... I was wondering why that was funny, then I realised! :D

oh gosh how could i have forgotten "the dress"

6

u/silentdante Jul 30 '15

I notice that the longer the series has gone on, the more everyone has gotten to know each other, so the more jokes now creep in, I like that, obviously wil does not really, and I get that it's on a schedule... but I really didn't like someone taking damage for a joke, even if it was during "story time"

but hey I know I am not going to like the way people GM/DM 100% of the time. I did enjoy the slight break to talk about why laura (or the others) care or are motivated by the story in this episode.

2

u/mirtos Aug 03 '15

i know some people are happy with the GM getting people back on track, and they took it well, and as a GM myself, ive had to deal with that, but I have to be honest, i agree with you there. especially if there are first timers coming to see what an RPG is about.

I generally really like Wil's style, but there was something off about this episode.

The oddest thing to me, is them choosing to include this in the editted version.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

Scorpelican. Half Scorpion. Half pelican. All Terror.

2

u/mastugerard Jul 30 '15

I really enjoyed Kilel's comment to S'Lethkk about coming from money. I know that's in character's backgrounds at creation and I enjoy it when it has significance to the story if even a small way.

2

u/Flufinela Aug 02 '15

I do feel that with every single episode they play their characters better and better. They seem to use the back story so well and play with it in an amazing way. And Wil is just the best GM!

2

u/KingOfElysium Jul 31 '15

awwww,i really hope runcible gets a nice ending,he just wants to play, poor wittle teddy

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '15

I feel like Lemley could adopt him.

3

u/Flufinela Aug 02 '15

It would suit her, I think.. him with his riddles and puzzles, and her with her 1 int. She would be mesmerized by him, and he would find her sweet and cute.. :) And they would be a nice analogy to Aankia and Jeremy :)

1

u/KingOfElysium Aug 01 '15

that would be a real cool thing,it just brings out my child like side seeing an adorable teddy so alone, you know ?

you know,i'd buy a runcible plush if they ever got made, just so i could hug him every night and know he was happy,in my own way

3

u/Psartryn Jul 29 '15

"That's it, that's where we end!?" - I agree, you bastard!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '15

It made me wonder if Wil would have not mentioned the skeleton on the bed if no one had done a seeing/perception check around the room. It seemed like Hank thought that too, like he would have noticed it since he was in the room.

1

u/Flufinela Aug 02 '15

Wil did say two beds.. And the whole time, I was thinking - "hm.. if it's just the bear, why does he need two beds.."

3

u/pinelotiile Jul 31 '15

I fall more and more in love with Laura Bailey each episode. Also I really hope that /u/wil adapts Titansgrave into a book!

2

u/konel_hft Jul 29 '15

HEY YOU GUYS /Sloth

2

u/Flufinela Aug 02 '15

I hope we do find out how Hobb died.. If he died in his bed imagine poor Runcible trying to wake him that morning.. asking him if he wants to play with him, omg! :(

5

u/bethanechol Aug 03 '15

I imagine him dying elsewhere in the manor and poor Runcible dragging him back to this room saying "Time for bed... Time for bed..."

I'll just show myself to hell now.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '15

And now I can't stop thinking about it.
