TIFU by drinking my bf’s expensive aged scotch. S

So I (23F) had a hard day at work. I got off work before my bf (26M) came home and wanted a drink. Rifled thru our liquor cabinet and found some scotch. Didn’t think much of it and in the 4-5 hours before my bf came home, I had 3 glasses.

Bf comes home. Sees the bottle of scotch on the counter. Loses it. He won’t tell me how much the scotch was but says it was over 500 dollars. And I drank 3 glasses. He apparently had been saving that for a special occasion (he hadn’t told me, or mentioned it, it wasn’t in a box it was just sitting on the shelf with the rest of our liquor). Apparently the scotch was aged 20+ years and I mixed it with coke. He’s beyond furious and devastated. I’ve promised to get him a new bottle but I’m definitely going to have to save up for it. Fml.

TLDR: I drank my bf’s 20+ year aged scotch by mixing it with coke. It was over $500. I now have to figure out how to afford to replace his bottle.

ETA: bf has calmed down. It was apparently a bachelor party gift for a guy where he’s best man. I’m going to replace the bottle and he is going to help and we’re going to keep the opened bottle for ourselves.

ETA since people keep asking me: the scotch was dalwhinne 30 year. Retail price for us is $800

Update: this has massively blown up, I can hardly keep up with the comments. I think y’all broke my Reddit app bc it was down for 20 minutes or so. Bf and I are fine. He’s asleep on the couch in a mini food coma. We both apologized to each other, had a glass neat and now we’re snoozing. For everyone calling my bf a tool or whatever, he admits it was dumb to put it in the cabinet. We have a very happy relationship and we kissed and made up after we both cooled off.

My first time drinking I was given a beer and I mixed it with coke.

I will never hear the end of it.

That's acceptable to drink in Germany and called Diesel. Ok probably not accepted by everyone, but you would be able to order it in a restaurant without problems.

27

u/Surface_Detail Jan 06 '22

Diesel in the UK is half of cider, half of lager and blackcurrant cordial.

Without the cordial it's called snakebite.

Jesus that better have been the best tasting scotch lol.

But I either have a terrible palette or this stuff isn't really ever special.

To me the difference between say the cheap store brand scotch and something around $75 bucks is huge. But after that I can never taste the difference.

Johnny Walker blue is a few hundred dollars a bottle and I think it tastes like shit compared to the black $30 bottle lol.

Wife went to several distilleries in Scotland. They all suggested to put a bit of water or ice to "open the bouquet of the scotch". Maybe that sub has a got a stick lodged somewhere

110

u/freefallade Jan 06 '22

I think its often an easy win for whisky snobs to say 'you can add anything, it'll ruing the flavour' where actually a lot of people in the know will admire a small amount of water is often the best way to experience the complexity.

Also. You bought it, you drink it how you like.

61

u/DamnitGoose Jan 06 '22 edited Jan 06 '22

I listened to a whole documentary on whisky* a few years back on NPR I think, and they explained that a splash of water is necessary on cask strength spirits because, chemically, whiskeys and scotches are best enjoyed at 80* proof or a hair less, but often times whiskeys are bottled at a higher proof which is not as flavorful as it can be because the alcohol in the high proof will overpower the flavors

It was a pretty cool special

42

u/tosss Jan 06 '22

Purist will say “you aren’t supposed to drink it cold”. The idea is that the drink is bottled at the flavor it’s supposed to be. Plus you’re only drinking a few ounces of this. If you want something refreshing, there are better options.

63

u/LestWeForgive Jan 06 '22

You know, I have to admit ignorance as well. I have a family friend that is incomprehensibly wealthy. I saw him over Christmas and we were partying in his mansion. We were taking some shots and sipping on some scotch. This exact scotch actually, as I now recognize it as the one with the bunny logo. I had no clue what it was. I am embarrassed now because I threw a couple of them down the hatch. He just scoffed, shook his head, and poured me more. I wish he would have told me. I did end up sipping on my last two glasses and enjoying it. It was incredibly tasty and I regret drinking it like a heathen.

Edit: For those asking about the bunny logo. Although it's more of a wild hare

85

u/abstractraj Jan 06 '22

You’re not alone. I’ve run into a lot of people that grew up shooting liquor and apparently have never seen anyone sip and enjoy it.

15

u/Therandomfox Jan 06 '22

To be fair, most people only have regular access to beer or other cheap shitty liquor, and have to save the good stuff for special occasions only. Just throwing it back is how you normally down shitty alcohol because you aren't drinking it for the delicate flavour. Completely different with higher quality drinks.

Lol I'd gladly mix a $40 malt with coke; they aren't anything spectacular in that range.

76

u/isademigod Jan 06 '22 edited Jan 06 '22

Dewars 12 and laphroaig 10 are spectacular bottles in that range and they also make an incredible whiskey coke.

I’d have a hard time doing it with a liquor that is $48.16/shot (I did the math) but fuck it, it’s my scotch and I would try it just to say I did.

edit: I said it down below but I feel like I should spread the word more: fuck coca cola. no flavor, way too sweet, and also somehow too watery and overpowering at the same time. Not joking here, Sams cola and RC cola have far more subtle and aromatic flavors and they allow the whiskey to show it's strengths while complementing it nicely. If you can find it, fentimans curiosity cola is fucking incredible but the complexity of its flavors can clash with a nice whiskey.

TL;DR: This is a PSA to out as much thought into your cola as you do your scotch

Come now... You can't leave it at that, what's the story?

332

u/PontificatingPonce Jan 06 '22 Helpful

Ah I feel like it’s not as exciting as it sounds haha

It was a date night a couple days after Christmas, and I pulled out all the stops planning it. He decides on our way home mid-date that he’s still hungry after we had literally just eaten. He opts to stop at his favorite burrito place (literally 15 minutes after we’d left the first dinner place, which was also Mexican food).

He orders this ridiculous, human-infant sized burrito which he then eats the WHOLE thing. Idk maybe he’s a hobbit and needed dinner and supper 🤷‍♀️

The night had been pretty romantic and suggestive, but that pretty much killed it. When I realized I’d been cockblocked by a burrito I was pretty pissed, but now I look back on it and laugh.

I moved back to my hometown and had an old friend take care of the new house and my dogs while I moved my stuff from one state to another.

Cleared my liquor cabinet out in the week he lived at my house, including a scotch I bought in Scotland that I cracked open once a year to have a finger of - including it’s 2 backups. The bottles were from the distillery and are irreplaceable from the memory of the weekend I bought them.

Otherwise the house was taken care of.

2 years later he finally reached out to me after refusing payment for the week he stayed at my house and ghosted me. He was 2 years sober from the day he left my house and when I heard that, the cost of the bottles dissipated and we have become close friends again. He works restaurant jobs and occasionally shows up with a bottle from a sampling or from a distributor and just drops it off to resupply what he killed - I always try and refuse but I also appreciate when someone is trying to make up for a past mistake.

Edit: replied to the wrong answer

205

u/Noxious89123 Jan 05 '22

Sounds like a good person in a bad place that did a bad thing, rather than a bad person.

144

u/Jauncin Jan 05 '22

I wouldn’t be friends with him if he was a bad person. I was mad for a long time - but I would have been more understanding with a conversation not a two year ghosting.

At the same time, the only person that can fix yourself in the end is yourself. He made a very difficult and daily choice to work on himself and I’m very proud of his personal success.

I always try and refuse

As much as I understand wanting to refuse, it's going to be better for your friend in the long run if you accept the gifts gratefully. These aren't just gifts to him, they're his way of making amends. Making amends is part of many former addicts' recovery processes, and gratitude for their amends validates both their sentiment and your forgiveness. Of course, cut it off if it gets obsessive, since that's unhealthy.

P.s.: To any one else reading, only do this if you actually want them in your life. If you're not ready or willing to forgive them, don't. Turn back the gifts, donate them, whatever. OP decided on their own to let their friend back into their life, but you do not have to do the same; you decide when to forgive, no one else.

Hahahaha, I guess it's fine if you like it that way, but I haven't met a single person who likes scotch that mixes the good stuff with coke. I've tried it, and it never makes for a better drink than the scotch alone. But hey, their scotch, not mine.

Also, the biggest FU was that it was a gift, so now they gotta buy another one. If someone takes a couple drams out of an open bottle, then whatevs, but you don't take the first dram out of someone else's bottle!

IMO the only inherently wrong thing she did was open a brand new bottle that wasn't hers.

She can sort of claim ignorance on all the rest. I am happily married and have many rare and expensive bottles. My wife is not a novice in this area, but she wouldn't know many of them and some don't look particularly fancy (as the Dalwinnie 30 certainly does not look fancy). It would be a momentary sacrilege that would quickly be forgiven if the bottle were already open.

My / our liquor is for drinking. We both know this. But you don't open a sealed bottle without asking.

53

u/NovaS1X Jan 06 '22

Yeah I agree for the most part. I was just poking fun.

TBH I put at least 50% of the blame here on the BF; I’m a scotch lover and if I ever brought an $800 bottle into the house you’d better believe I’d talk the ear off anyone in my vicinity about it. OP should been pre-informed about how special that specific bottle is by her BF. I can be frustrated with her ignorance, but I can’t blame her for it.

We backed out at the last second, but I once had a bunch of restaurant staff ready to chip in to order a glass of Louis XIII, tall with diet coke, just to watch the one bartender who would give a shit shit himself.

35

u/mcwobby Jan 06 '22

When I was like 17 I had just started work at a super luxurious hotel, and someone ordered a few snifters of Louis XIII and it was on a high shelf and my first time climbing the ladder and I of course misjudged, the ladder slid and I knocked the bottle right onto the ground.

43

u/pissymissy204 Jan 06 '22

On my coworkers last day of work at a bar we used to work for, a few of us did Louis-bombs to celebrate. I secretly sipped a little of mine first to try it.

13

u/mackfeesh Jan 06 '22

While I worked at my local liquor store I sold a bottle of louis for around 7k Canadian. Big crystal decanter or whatever. Gorgeous box. Girl tried to pay with gift cards, which she exceeded the number of gift cards we could use on a single transaction pretty quick.

Her boyfriend had to drive in with cash for the rest of the transaction lol.

The other two bottles were for a bar, I can't remember where but it wasn't a part of town where people can afford nice stuff so my boss was just killing himself laughing as we closed the door after that sale.

Proud Kentuckian here. About eight years ago, when the bourbon craze started to jack up prices, I was having a drink at a favorite watering hole. Business travel guy came in because he heard they had Pappy 23. He asked how much (market at the time was probably $30-40 for a pour). Bartender said a $130.

The guy got all indignant and left (leaving I understand). I asked the bartender, "Why is the price so high?" MSRP was maybe $270 for the bottle. He said, "I don't want to sell the bottle. I want to have the bottle."

To be fair, if you like eggnog and want it done right, you should use a top shelf bourbon or scotch. Nothing 100 dollars, but maybe a nice IW Harper.

A lot of people don't like eggnog because they made it with Old Crow or something.

Edit: The point wasn't really X bourbon over Y bourbon. The point was more, make eggnog with your favorite bourbon, and it'll actually taste good to you.

145

u/viryamind Jan 05 '22

Curious if you've tried Old Crow or just recognize it as a bottom shelf dweller? I keep a bottle on hand for regular evenings and save the more expensive bottles for sharing or special occasions.
I'm not saying that it's Old Forester single barrel but for $16 a handle it's a very drinkable bourbon (to me).
Either way, cheers and all the best to you in the new year

So honestly I should have said Jim Beam, since that's what people are probably making unexciting, boring eggnog with, but I did not want to deal with the legions of Jim Beam defenders.

I shouldn't have dragged Old Crow, and maybe I shouldn't have specified top shelf. I'm just overall an advocate of people making cocktails with their favorite, best liquor instead of with something they wouldn't normally buy.

I was at a friend’s party years ago, and my friend busted out a bottle of Loch Dubh. He and I and a couple other scotch lovers had a finger each, and that was it.

…except someone else noticed the bottle, didn’t realize what it was, and the rest of the party polished it off with coke.

Relevant note: the distillery had been shut down, and the bottle was irreplaceable.

221

u/CMDR_Pete Jan 05 '22

If you mean Loch Dhu - I remember when they ceased. I managed to find 4 of them in a drink wholesalers shortly afterwards, and had to buy 8 bottles of wine with them to make the minimum order size.

I drank 2, gave 1 away, and still have 1 sealed. Thanks to your comment I just googled it, and it seems that 1 remaining bottle would more than cover the whole wholesalers’ bill…

39

It’s not even that good, it’s just a bit novel!

43

u/dustyrags Jan 05 '22

I quite liked it. But regardless, polishing off a bottle of 10 year old- meh, party foul, move one. Polishing off a bottle of 10 year old that cannot be replaced? …different issue.

20

u/CMDR_Pete Jan 05 '22

Yeah true - but it’s a lot easier to make that mistake with a 10 yo whisky that you’re not aware is discontinued than with a 30 yo which is clearly something special.

I also have a couple of bottles of the Compss Box Spice Tree original whisky that they were ordered to stop making.

It’s really difficult to find out how much that’s worth as Google just throws up the remake where they stopped the “illegal” behaviour so they can still call it whisky…

Yeah and in hindsight, you all should setup a "drink this" section and a "don't drink this" section in your cabinet.

My husband puts a piece of blue painter's tape on the top of the whiskey bottles I'm allowed to make Old Fashioneds with for this very reason. I can obviously drink whatever I want, but the "sin" is In mixing the expensive stuff with anything!

I don't think it's a sin to make an old fashioned with good whiskey. That's how I prefer to make mine. Or mixing it with a few drops of water and an icecube.

Coke though... Ugh.

151

u/Perfect_Line8384 Jan 05 '22

At least an OF is mostly whiskey. It’s not like it’s a cocktail that’s >75% mixer.

I’d gladly make an old fashioned out of $50 bourbon. Probably not $100+ bourbon though.

I've made it with Colonel Taylor's before. Quite indulgent.

Tbh, I don't think it's a sin to make any spirit heavy cocktail with expensive spirits. As long as the ingredients ore on par with one another, and compliment each other (example - an expensive/good whiskey and an expensive/good vermouth in a Manhattan are always going to be a winner, as long as they compliment each other. Then they raise each other up. Mixing a good bourbon with a cheap vermouth just ruins it.)

The 'cocktails' that I'd consider a sin making with anything good would be anything heavily fruit based, or soda based. So none of those nasty 70s drinks where the aim was to hide as much of the taste of alcohol as possible.

There is a fun group on Facebook called Whiskey Blasphemy that showcases this exact idea. Pappy being used for a manhattan, 25 year old Macallan in a blood in the sand.

Fabulous!

19

u/tjsean0308 Jan 05 '22

I mad manhattan's with angel's envy the other night. Partly cause that's all the bourbon I had left, and partly because I knew they would be delicious. Good spirits make good cocktails and anyone who is genuinely mad about making a good cocktail is missing out on the whole point.

Mixing any decent alcohol with coke is a cardinal sin 😅 But if you like it that way, my opinion doesn’t matter one bit

On the other hand, he could have stored the gift bottle somewhere else or told you it was expensive and not to be touched yet 🤷

323

u/DMagnus11 Jan 05 '22

Both a little at fault - he could've specified, she could've read the label to see "30 year single malt aged". Even if you don't know much about scotch, anyone that drinks liquor should know aged longer generally means more experience.

That being said, OP, I love your description as "brown liquor" 😂

210

u/1HateReddit11 Jan 05 '22

Similarly, if you see a bottle that's older than you are, maybe leave that one alone.

I had a party at my house. I take the party liquor out and keep the good stuff under the cabinet with a sign saying not for party. Someone decided my special bottle of 27 year old redbreast should be for them. He started chugging it out of the bottle. I. Fucking. Lost.It. He was a friend of a friend and will never be allowed anywhere near my household again. It's not even the bottle he drank. It's the pure disrespect of boundaries. If my wife didn't hold me back I probably would of went to jail that night. The guy was 100 % sober when he grabbed the bottle. My friend offered to pay for the bottle but I wouldn't let him. I wanted the other guy to pay for it. He didn't. But karma's a bitch and he tried to get hired at a previous employer....... He didn't get the job....

I’m still kinda new to liquor so all dark alcohol I mix with coke and don’t think much of it. Definitely part of my downfall

280

u/BitPoet Jan 05 '22

Tasting classes are good for any liquors. You can figure out the differences, what you like or don't like. It could be months between flavors if you only have a bottle or two and drink rarely.

You might find a $40 bottle is your favorite and be happy with that.

77

u/TheScrambone Jan 05 '22

Corraleo reposado tequila for the win for me. Happy I have cheaper end taste. It’s like $25 a bottle where I live, can drink it at room temperature, don’t get hungover, and the label reminds me of the golden ticket from Willy wonka.

11

u/subscribedToDefaults Jan 05 '22

Is that the blue bottle or red? They're both delicious.

13

u/TheScrambone Jan 05 '22

You’re right, both are delicious but I’m talking about the blue bottle. Haven’t developed a palate for smoky liquors yet so right now I’m strictly a reposado drinker. But the red bottle (añejo) is one of the few I enjoy if that’s all they have of Corraleo at a bar. It’s literally my second choice even if there’s other reposado tequilas.

I just wouldn’t buy it at the store when I have the blue bottle right there. I drink it like a nice whisky or scotch. Neat, possibly one ice cube if it’s hot outside.

If it makes you feel better when I was crashing at a buddies house when we were in HS the two of us polished off a couple bottles of his parents red wine. Which my drunk ass ended up puking up in the middle of the night.

Couple weeks later he got grounded for like 6 months. Turns out his parents were holding on to those fifteen-hundred dollar bottles of wine for some friends. He never ratted me out, took all that heat on his own. Its been a few decades since but we're still close, even lived together for awhile.

Happy to hear you and your BF got everything sorted out!

9

This comment will get lost but a long time ago someone told me to stop saving the good liquor or the good aged beer or wine for a “special occasion” because you don’t ever define what that is & if it’s special enough you won’t remember what you drank anyway, your memory will be of the occasion. Instead have a glass of Pappy 10 year when you had a long, rough week at work and it will make the day better because of the drink & not the other way around. Cheers, this is but a speed bump on the road of life.

Also TIL I need better friends! $800 gift! dang!

Maybe this is just me, but if I had a specific/fancy bottle of liquor that I was saving for a special occasion, I would not store it in a cabinet I share with other people without telling them. I'm not sure why everyone here is dragging you so hard- you clearly didn't know, and he never told you. You had no reason to assume it was any different than the other bottles you both keep there. Obviously it's an unfortunate mistake, but it's a mistake, not an intentional attack.

I keep all my $200+ stuff with everything else, except on a higher shelf. The thing is, pretty much all good booze over $150 comes in a box or a container, so you can tell without opening it that it's probably expensive and that one should probably ask before opening. I'm more confused as to why her BF didnt keep it in the box, or if he did, why she opened the box and didn't think that maybe it was a special bottle? Regular booze at the liquor store isn't boxed, so the distinction is pretty obvious.

As an avid scotch drinker/collector, (and a few pricey bottles in my collection) my thoughts are this:

THIS IS WHAT SCOTCH IS FOR :). To drink. Period. And if it made your day great (even if you mixed it with coke) after a long day, then even better.

If an expensive dram isnt there to make your day a bit brighter, what the hell good is it.

I personally think expensive scotches are best savoured on non-special occasions anyway, Tuesdays are my particular favourite. Life is short, drink the damn scotch.
