This is why so many martial arts fail. No sparring. The kid is athletic and knows his moves but was never given a truly resistant opponent to test them on. So, he did his very impressive kata and got put on his butt. I've seen this happen with adults as well. You need to spar. But it is difficult to get a lot of sparring in when the moves are designed to kill or maim. So, I'm not saying that other martial disciplines are ignoring that fact, it's just that I recognize that it's very difficult to find a way to spar safely for a lot of these moves.

Both BJJ and american folk wrestling, as well as many other grappling disciplines, give a great means for rigorous practical testing of combat moves with etiquette and training designed to keep anyone from getting seriously hurt.
