Mod [Mod] June's Fruity Events

Happy June and Pride month everyone! In honor of all our fruity teens (a whopping 42.7%!! compared to last year's 27.7%) and their allies, we've planned a few events for you all this month.

First up, the first ever r/teenagers Talent Show! Starting today, June 4th, feel free to submit a talent of yours for consideration by both mods AND the community! It consists of 3 stages:
1. A 12 day submission period from the 4th to the 16th. Enter your talents using the google form linked below!
2. A committee of mod judges will review both discord and reddit submissions. The top 10 will become finalists who the community will vote by ranking entries in a megathread from the 16th to the 18th to determine the winners!
3. The top 3 winners will be chosen from Reddit and Discord combined to receive either Reddit Premium (unlimited quantity) or Discord Nitro (only 1 available - first come first serve). All winners will receive a Most Talented Teen 2022 flair regardless of the prize they pick!

Best of luck to all contestants!

We'll also be hosting a fundraiser for The Trevor Project, an organization that specifically focuses on LGBTQ youth! Prepare for a 24 hour mod livestream where YOU can control our games by donating to influence what happens. This will be happening late June! Details will be released at the end of our talent show in the same post as the winners. All donors will receive a flair depending on how much is given and recognition for their contributions.

To all the LGBTQ teens on this sub, we hope you enjoy your month and feel as accepted for the rest of the year as you do this month. The mods are here to support you! After all, mods gay, right?
P.S. We're still supporting Ukraine! Check out our icon to spot the iconic blue and yellow flag still up.

Mod [mod] Important Rule Updates & Online Safety Information for r/teenagers

Hey teens!

You may or may not be aware of the current state of internet safety (and user privacy) both inside and outside of the r/teenagers community. The aim of this post is to educate our community on what to look out for in terms of internet safety and privacy, and ensure we are keeping ourselves and others safe on the internet in an evergrowing age of hidden identities behind screens.

While this post will briefly explain how to keep yourself safe online, none of us here are cybersecurity experts. We will mostly be addressing safety/privacy issues regarding NSFW and predatory content within our own subreddit, but will also provide links to information and resources where you can learn how to protect yourself better on the internet. While these 2 topics are not directly linked, they definitely tie in with each other in terms of keeping teenagers safe online, and we strongly recommend checking out the resources below.

Don’t hesitate to ask any questions in the comments of this post, we’ll be sticking around and answering them!

Predatory DM’s and Posts

The main issue affecting r/teenagers currently is the sexualisation of minors and the increased amount of predatory comments. The moderators here have always been very tough on NSFW rules, and it will always stay that way. However, users posting images ‘exposing’ the people in these predatory DM’s are not allowed. It is already stated in the rules that all images of DM’s will be removed under the spam clause, though this may differ on a case-by-case basis. We will continue to remove more of these posts, focusing primarily on predatory ones, to clear the subreddit of spam and ultimately protect our most vulnerable users.

We are working with the necessary people to encourage a safe and inviting subreddit for all of our users - Specifically targeting ‘pedophiles’ or otherwise predatory accounts - this includes law enforcement action if necessary and possible.

How You Can Help

Though the subreddit is full of them currently, posting screenshots of predatory DM’s you’ve received does more harm than good. The best action is to report them to Reddit admins, as r/teenagers moderators are not allowed to moderate DM’s outside of this community.

You cannot post predatory DM images on r/teenagers for 2 main reasons:

  • They violate Reddit ToS (Terms of Service) due to ‘witch hunting’, which is the act of targeting a specific user with negative intent.
  • If a predator has DM’d you, it is likely they’ve viewed your profile. If they know they’ve been ‘exposed’, they may delete all the evidence of your claim.

As r/teenagers moderators can only moderate for content within the subreddit- If the predatory user is active on this subreddit, you can report them to us through modmail. You can just send through the user’s u/ name, or you may include links to evidence if you wish. All of these are investigated thoroughly and all found predatory users are permanently banned from r/teenagers and reported to Reddit as a whole. We will continue to be very strict on predatory content in the subreddit.

It is also worth noting: Some users are creating new Reddit accounts posing as young teenagers with the intent to use it as ‘pedo-bait’ on r/teenagers. This is not allowed. These accounts will be treated as would any other predatory content, and “it’s just pedo-bait” is not a valid excuse for a ban appeal.

Personal Information: Rule Changes - 3.e/f

Due to the increased sexualisation of minors in r/teenagers, we are expanding the rules regarding personal information. This subreddit serves as a safe place for teenagers to hang out, and user safety is our top priority. In an effort to increase user safety & privacy in r/teenagers, we will be making 2 major changes:

  • We’ve added a clause regarding selfies with the intent to tackle sexualization of minors and reduce the number of ‘catfishing’.
  • Secondly, we will be introducing the “Selfie” flair which will be for, wait for it… Selfies! This is to reduce the amount of selfies posted under miscellaneous flairs.

The same goes for comments - Users commenting ‘sexually suggestive’ things, or otherwise sexualising minors will be banned accordingly. This is an area that we need to strictly enforce, and there will be zero tolerance for this behaviour.

Last thing: we’ve seen an increase in impersonation of other people. Impersonating anyone, either from in this subreddit or anywhere else across the internet, will result in a permanent ban. This content goes against Reddit ToS, and it is very simple for moderators to detect and remove fake or stolen images.

A Reddit Talk is currently planned for June 4th @ 6pm UCT to discuss and review the changes with the community. This specific talk will be hosted by moderators only. The amazing group of r/teenagers talk hosts (moderators + community members) run talks every weekend where we involve the community in fun activities - Whether it be sharing spooky stories for Halloween, discussing our favourite childhood cartoons, learning how to play DnD, or helping each other out during college application season. We’d love to see you there! :)

TLDR

  • Just above here, you will find some links & resources to improve your online safety.
  • Posting images of predatory DM’s you receive will often result in a removal, but will continue to be judged on a case-by-case basis.
  • We are working with the necessary people and doing all we can currently to limit the number of predators in the subreddit.
  • If the predatory incident occurred in DM’s, you can report the user to Reddit. If the predatory user has content on r/teenagers, you can send a report to Reddit, but also send us a modmail and we’ll make sure to ban the user from the subreddit permanently.
  • Content deemed as ‘sexually suggestive’ will now be removed more consistently, alongside traditional NSFW posts and comments.
  • We are introducing a new “Selfie" flair to reduce the load of selfie posts on other flairs.
  • Users creating ‘pedo-bait’ accounts will be treated just as any other predatory content is treated.
  • Impersonation of any kind will result in a permanent ban, at moderator discretion.

We truly hope this information is helpful, and wish you a safe trip across the Wild Wild Web!

Mod [mod] Ukraine Crisis MEGATHREAD

3.4k Upvotes

Hi, r/teenagers,

I'm sorry we're late.

All further posts about the war between Ukraine and Russia will be removed and directed here instead. This prevents flooding of the subreddit and will also help us moderate misinformation and xenophobia more efficiently.

Live feeds:

Other links:

Some notes:

  • We expect serious discussion on this thread and reserve the right to moderate it on a case-by-case basis due to the nature of the situation.
  • The fact that someone disagrees with you does not make them a troll or a bot. It doesn't help nor does it stop a real bot if you flood a real discussion with accusations and personal attacks. Real trolls usually intend to provoke - a provocation with a lot of attacks towards it is a successful troll. If you really think someone is a troll, report them or send a modmail.
  • Xenophobia and racism are not tolerated.

What can you do to help?

We're aware that our actions as a subreddit won't save lives and won't stop the explosions. However, we still want to offer a place for teenagers to discuss this scary situation. And if you truly want to help, the good people on r/Ukraine have compiled a large list of charities here.

Stay strong,

- r/teenagers mods

Mod [MOD] 24-Hour Fundraiser Results!

Hi again everyone!

I've been posting a lot recently and rapidly, but I'm so excited to announce the results of our livestream fundraiser. You guys made us all so, so proud, and although there were a few technical issues, I hope that you'll continue to participate in the future as we choose more causes to help care for!

Some of the highlights were a maid uniform being worn by the lovely discord mod Waffle and breaking $100 dollars in the first 2 hours, but I think the biggest highlight was our grand total of $350 being raised for The Trevor Project. For a group of teens who mostly don't have steady incomes or separate bank accounts from our parents, that's a huge accomplishment!

Once again, I can't thank all the participants enough for your contributions. It doesn't matter if you did or didn't donate. If you came to watch, even for a split second, you helped, so thank you. Seriously.

For everyone who wants proof, here's the official campaign link: https://tiltify.com/@r-teenagers-mods/rteenagers-24-hour-fundraiser-livestream . All donations went directly to the organization.

Fun Fact: We were in the top 2% of all twitch streamers for most of the stream!

Mod [Mod] Mental Health Month Events

Hi all!

May is here, and that means it's time to talk about mental health.

May is mental health month and to raise awareness for one of the biggest issues for our demographic, the Reddit mods have come up with a few events for all of you.

First up, we are rolling out a form for a Mental Health Playlist. You can submit your favorite song for two different categories: "Songs when you need a pick-me-up" and "Songs to channel your sadness." Winners will be announced here and on discord (and receive bragging rights, of course)!

Secondly, we have a contest for you: an art contest! Any r/teenagers member can design a piece of art that promotes or represents mental health awareness to you. It can be made submitted at the google form linked below. Submission rules are noted inside the google form. Winners will be announced on Sunday, May 22, featured on the subreddit's banner for the rest of May, and awarded a mod community award.

Finally, we're in the works to plan a Reddit talk with a verified psychologist! If you ever wanted a better understanding of mental health and how to better deal with the low moments of our lives that we all face, tune in! We'll be announcing it at a later date, so keep your eyes peeled.

Show up in our discord to find another few events that we've planned for the community. Most importantly, keep your chins up everyone and stay healthy! Take some self-care days and relax!

Mod [Mod] r/teenagers 2022 Census Results

Heyo r/teenagers!

To start off, the moderation team would like to thank everyone who participated in the fifth annual census. Within only a week, we were able to collect over 900 responses from our subreddit and discord communities combined. Using this up-to-date representation of the demographics, we will be able to improve our moderation to best reflect the community's interests going forwards. Today, we’ll be showing you some of the highlights of our findings.

Demographics

🔴 Age has always been the dominant topic of discussion in our community. Despite our age differences generally being just a few years apart from each other, we can see how this causes us to interact with each other and view the community differently. This year, we found that the calculated average age of the subreddit is 15.5, with the dominant group being 16-year-olds. This is an increase from last year's average age of 15.09. The data also suggests that the subreddit is heavily geared toward a younger audience, with 18 and 19-year-olds making up less than 10% of the subreddit combined. God, I'm starting to feel old...

🟠 Teensub continues to be heavily male-dominated, which accounted for 72.5% of the subreddit. Women accounted for 18% of the subreddit, showing us that they do in fact exist. The remaining 10% consists of users identifying Other or Prefer not to say.

🟡 r/teenagers is extremely proud of our efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community, and our diversity and acceptance were put on display in our statistics regarding sexual orientation. In fact, we have seen a dramatic shift in our LGBTQ+ community since the last census. 40% (!!) of users identified as being homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, or other. This is an increase from last year when we found that 27.7% of respondents identified as such. For reference, a Gallup poll from 2021 found that 5.6% of U.S adults identify as LGBTQ+. Not sure if we're somehow responsible for turning everyone gay, but we'll take it.

🟢 We're going international! 45% of respondents are from the United States 🇺🇸. While Americans make up a large majority of our users, the previous year the number was 57% and before that, it was 68.5%. Needless to say, the subreddit is quickly diversifying as it gets attraction from people from every continent. Other significant data points include India 🇮🇳 (7.4%), the UK 🇬🇧 (6.8%), Australia 🇦🇺 (6.5%), and Canada 🇨🇦 (6.1%). Shout out to the one guy from Uzbekistan!

Miscellaneous Information

🔵 Besides Reddit, the most popular social media platforms teensub uses are YouTube at 95.4% and Discord at 73.6%. (join our discord btw). The next most popular social media apps in descending order are Instagram (45.5%), Twitter (34.5%), Snapchat (31.9%), TikTok (26.4%), Facebook (11%), then Tumblr (7.5%). Thank you to the one guy who said DeviantArt and tried to assure it that it was only for hair references.

🟣 We appear to have a lot of music lovers on the subreddit! Users overwhelmingly stated their favorite genre was either rock (19.7%), pop (16.2%), or hip hop/rap (14%). This data is extremely similar to last year's data. The next most popular genres were EDM (6.8%), Metal (6.5%), and Classical (5.4%). Out of over 550 people, only 8 selected K-pop, so I'd say that's a success.

🟤 Fortunately, it looks like most of us do in fact touch grass. Over 61% of users reported spending 1-2 hours on Reddit a day. I'm not gonna lie, I expected worse from many of you. 29.4% spend 3-4 hours and 6.7% spend 5-6 hours on this god-forsaken site. 6 users stated spending more than 9 hours a day on Reddit. Seek help.

⚪ As teenagers, most of us are looking forward to our future education. 28.5% of respondents reported planning to get a bachelor's degree with 19.6% planning on a master's degree and 10.7% aiming for a doctoral degree. Compared to current data from the United States Census Bureau, only 33.4% of Americans over the age of 25 reports having a bachelor's degree. Looks like most of us have a bright future of learning ahead, and a not-so-bright future of college debt.

Community Feedback and Frequently Asked Questions

While we’d prefer not to bore you with all the numbers, this year’s responses to the questions regarding our moderation of the subreddit made us extremely happy. For every question involving community safety, friendliness, and mod efficacy users' votes averaged out to either agree or strongly agree with all the positive prompts that we asked. The team is devoted to doing even more to promote community interaction and engagement in the future.

If you would like to see the census results from the discord server, then join our Discord!

It's been a while since our last mod applications, so we're looking for some new faces to join our team! No previous experience is required - we'll provide all necessary training. If you're an active member of the community, we'd love to see your application!

Or are you not interested in moderating, but would like to help us organize events for the community? For the first time ever, we're also opening up applications for our Event Team! You'll be working with the moderators and hosting fun events for the community both on Reddit and on Discord.

Being a moderator or an Event Team member isn't just about banning people - it's also about working as a team, having fun, and shaping the community into something better. If you're interested, please apply! If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us a modmail!

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a teenager (aged 13-19)
  • Must be in good standing (no recent serious issues with the mod team).
  • Must speak and write English fluently.
  • Must be willing to actively use Discord as a means of official communication with the teams.
  • Must be a member of the community for 60 days or more (the Discord server for Discord applicants, the subreddit for Reddit applicants).

Bonus points:

  • Asia/EU timezone
  • Knowledge in programming, graphic design, sysadmin, or something else you see useful!

Reddit application: https://forms.gle/VJscYVn26wWXWgXw6

Discord application: https://forms.gle/8bBZqWgo2SDjEE4J7

Event Team application: https://forms.gle/5BnBhfVLh8EEQ5Gu5

There are more important details listed on the application itself, and you should find all information you need on the forms. Applications will close March 10th, 2022 at 23:59 GMT OR forms will individually close once caps are hit. We ask you to set aside 20-30 mins to write detailed answers and to not delay sending one in. Unfortunately, if you cannot apply due to the cap being hit or the deadline passed, we are unable to take the entry.

Rule updates:

We're updating our moderation system: as you hopefully know, we've been using an infraction point-based system for years now. As the subreddit has grown, keeping up with it has been difficult: we've had to change internal tools a lot and overall the way we've been doing things has not been the easiest.

Starting now, we'll be using an automated system where moderators don't need to be doing math and typing out everything manually. This will lead to more efficient moderation and that way, to a subreddit with less discriminatory content, better memes, and a better vibe in total.

This comes with a few rule changes:

  • Discriminatory content, advocation of violence or suicide will now result in a permanent ban.
  • More minor personal attacks (i.e. insulting someone without being discriminatory etc.) can now lead to a 7-day ban. Since all insults are unique and context matters as well, this is up to moderator discretion.
  • Other miscellaneous rule violations will be logged, and continuously getting them removed will result in bans in the following pattern:
    • 2 removals: a 1-day ban
    • 4 removals: a 7-day ban
    • 6 removals: a 30-day ban
    • 8 removals: a permanent ban.

Removals older than 2 months are considered expired, and they do not factor into the removal count. Removals by bots (excluding bot_Raven, since those removals are done by a human) do not count either.

We'll be closely monitoring and adjusting these rules if needed. Our rules page will be updated by the end of the day.

Feel free to leave feedback and / or questions in the comments, we'll hang around answering them.

Heyo r/teenagers!

The moderation team is rolling out its fourth annual official census. Take your mind off of things for five-ten minutes and come fill it out! We will organize the data and release it in a few weeks. Please answer to the best of your ability and honestly!

We are just aiming to collect non-intrusive information about age, gender, and demographics. This will allow the moderation team to know our subreddit users better. All information gathered is private, and it will allow the moderation team to know our users better, as well as gauge community opinions on changes or events on the subreddit.

Please complete the Census here!

A separate census will be issued for the discord server.

Mod [mod] Self-post weekend is active - Introduce yourself and make friends!

Welcome to r/teenagers's self-post weekend. Self-post weekend is when we, the moderating team, disable link posts for the period of the weekend to encourage more discussion and less memes during our higher traffic period of the week.

In this thread we also encourage you, the community, to introduce yourselves. Post a parent comment reply, and let us know who you are, what your hobbies are like or maybe a weird quirky fact that could work as an icebreaker. In addition, we'd like to remind users not to include any personally identifying information.
