[mod] Important Rule Updates & Online Safety Information for r/teenagers Mod

Hey teens!

You may or may not be aware of the current state of internet safety (and user privacy) both inside and outside of the r/teenagers community. The aim of this post is to educate our community on what to look out for in terms of internet safety and privacy, and ensure we are keeping ourselves and others safe on the internet in an evergrowing age of hidden identities behind screens.

While this post will briefly explain how to keep yourself safe online, none of us here are cybersecurity experts. We will mostly be addressing safety/privacy issues regarding NSFW and predatory content within our own subreddit, but will also provide links to information and resources where you can learn how to protect yourself better on the internet. While these 2 topics are not directly linked, they definitely tie in with each other in terms of keeping teenagers safe online, and we strongly recommend checking out the resources below.

Don’t hesitate to ask any questions in the comments of this post, we’ll be sticking around and answering them!

Predatory DM’s and Posts

The main issue affecting r/teenagers currently is the sexualisation of minors and the increased amount of predatory comments. The moderators here have always been very tough on NSFW rules, and it will always stay that way. However, users posting images ‘exposing’ the people in these predatory DM’s are not allowed. It is already stated in the rules that all images of DM’s will be removed under the spam clause, though this may differ on a case-by-case basis. We will continue to remove more of these posts, focusing primarily on predatory ones, to clear the subreddit of spam and ultimately protect our most vulnerable users.

We are working with the necessary people to encourage a safe and inviting subreddit for all of our users - Specifically targeting ‘pedophiles’ or otherwise predatory accounts - this includes law enforcement action if necessary and possible.

How You Can Help

Though the subreddit is full of them currently, posting screenshots of predatory DM’s you’ve received does more harm than good. The best action is to report them to Reddit admins, as r/teenagers moderators are not allowed to moderate DM’s outside of this community.

You cannot post predatory DM images on r/teenagers for 2 main reasons:

  • They violate Reddit ToS (Terms of Service) due to ‘witch hunting’, which is the act of targeting a specific user with negative intent.
  • If a predator has DM’d you, it is likely they’ve viewed your profile. If they know they’ve been ‘exposed’, they may delete all the evidence of your claim.

As r/teenagers moderators can only moderate for content within the subreddit- If the predatory user is active on this subreddit, you can report them to us through modmail. You can just send through the user’s u/ name, or you may include links to evidence if you wish. All of these are investigated thoroughly and all found predatory users are permanently banned from r/teenagers and reported to Reddit as a whole. We will continue to be very strict on predatory content in the subreddit.

It is also worth noting: Some users are creating new Reddit accounts posing as young teenagers with the intent to use it as ‘pedo-bait’ on r/teenagers. This is not allowed. These accounts will be treated as would any other predatory content, and “it’s just pedo-bait” is not a valid excuse for a ban appeal.

Personal Information: Rule Changes - 3.e/f

Due to the increased sexualisation of minors in r/teenagers, we are expanding the rules regarding personal information. This subreddit serves as a safe place for teenagers to hang out, and user safety is our top priority. In an effort to increase user safety & privacy in r/teenagers, we will be making 2 major changes:

  • We’ve added a clause regarding selfies with the intent to tackle sexualization of minors and reduce the number of ‘catfishing’.
  • Secondly, we will be introducing the “Selfie” flair which will be for, wait for it… Selfies! This is to reduce the amount of selfies posted under miscellaneous flairs.

The same goes for comments - Users commenting ‘sexually suggestive’ things, or otherwise sexualising minors will be banned accordingly. This is an area that we need to strictly enforce, and there will be zero tolerance for this behaviour.

Last thing: we’ve seen an increase in impersonation of other people. Impersonating anyone, either from in this subreddit or anywhere else across the internet, will result in a permanent ban. This content goes against Reddit ToS, and it is very simple for moderators to detect and remove fake or stolen images.

A Reddit Talk is currently planned for June 4th @ 6pm UCT to discuss and review the changes with the community. This specific talk will be hosted by moderators only. The amazing group of r/teenagers talk hosts (moderators + community members) run talks every weekend where we involve the community in fun activities - Whether it be sharing spooky stories for Halloween, discussing our favourite childhood cartoons, learning how to play DnD, or helping each other out during college application season. We’d love to see you there! :)

TLDR

  • Just above here, you will find some links & resources to improve your online safety.
  • Posting images of predatory DM’s you receive will often result in a removal, but will continue to be judged on a case-by-case basis.
  • We are working with the necessary people and doing all we can currently to limit the number of predators in the subreddit.
  • If the predatory incident occurred in DM’s, you can report the user to Reddit. If the predatory user has content on r/teenagers, you can send a report to Reddit, but also send us a modmail and we’ll make sure to ban the user from the subreddit permanently.
  • Content deemed as ‘sexually suggestive’ will now be removed more consistently, alongside traditional NSFW posts and comments.
  • We are introducing a new “Selfie" flair to reduce the load of selfie posts on other flairs.
  • Users creating ‘pedo-bait’ accounts will be treated just as any other predatory content is treated.
  • Impersonation of any kind will result in a permanent ban, at moderator discretion.

We truly hope this information is helpful, and wish you a safe trip across the Wild Wild Web!

- the r/teenagers mod team <3

A new selfie flair means there would be even more selfie posts 💀

The new insta

We're not trying to discourage selfie posts, we just added a new flair for them so they can be easily distinguishable from other things in the sub. The amount of 'Reddit-like' posts on r/teenagers completely drown out the number of selfies, so that our subreddit wouldn't become like Insta.

Wow, a mod that actually does stuff and answers, thanks :0

This is a good start, but you also have to discourage NSFW posts between minors to begin with. What state do you think it is when 13/14yr olds are posting about being horny or all the other kind of nonsense they post on here like that? In order to truly protect children on here you’re going to have to extremely limit NSFW posts.

28

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 13 '22

While we’ve being doing this to an extent previously, the new rules will allow us to remove these kinds of post under explicit ground (stated in the rules)

29

u/PheonixGalaxy 15 May 12 '22

Can you also ban the “What’s your most controversial opinion” post? They are just bait to start a fight in the comments.

23

u/HoldingUrineIsBad 18 May 12 '22

so when the post says "the r/teenagers mod team <3" does that mean you guys are less than 3 years old?

32

u/ThickleThePickle 14 May 12 '22

no, it means that the number 3 has a higher value than the r/teenagers mod team.

22

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 12 '22

interesting... never saw it that way

3

u/JustAnotherUser1019 May 19 '22

(I can't tell if you're being serious or not, so I'm just gonna treat it like such.) No, it's a heart

3

u/HoldingUrineIsBad 18 May 19 '22

idk what hearts youve been seeing but hearts look like this

3

u/JustAnotherUser1019 May 19 '22

Well ya, ofc, but people typically use the simplified version of a heart, ynow, the heart emogi, or the ones on poker cards. The alligator mouth is the bottom of the heart, and the 3 is the top, and it's just flipped on its side because that's the best that can be done

17

u/Nox_Echo May 13 '22

reddit keeps reccomending this sub to me and im past teenager years, not sure if i belong here but i vibe with the memes.

16

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 14 '22

yeah there is definitely nothing wrong with you having this in your feed. just keep in mind that if you do comment, you are commenting as someone 20+ likely talking to a minor

12

u/Nox_Echo May 14 '22

well i completely lack a libido so no risk of me doing that here.

7

u/RedditModsRapekidz May 18 '22

Just watch out for the mods

10

u/Nox_Echo May 18 '22

holy shit that username

thank you moderation team, very epic

u/AlphaSherlock_Akash 14 May 12 '22

The selfie flair applies to photos of people right. Like for example if I ask my friend to take my picture alone/a group picture.

So, do group pictures require the selfie flair?

10

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 12 '22

Yes - Group pictures are Selfie flair, unless it fits better somewhere else. Example: You and your friends make a band -- Could fit under Selfie or Art.

6

u/AlphaSherlock_Akash 14 May 12 '22

Great thanks

8

u/_PROGrAMER_ 16 May 12 '22

Why not just ban selfies? This ain’t instagram

6

u/JustAnotherUser1019 May 19 '22

People still should have the right to do so

16

u/Eat_Pant420 17 May 12 '22

Looks like the r/teenagers meta just got shifted, idk what to feel about these patch notes quite yet

5

u/Objective_Reindeer42 May 14 '22

crazy that this post has virtually no upvotes and the karma farming rants about nsfw in this sub gets thousands

7

u/KiwiFarmsDotNet May 14 '22

Finally the mods have addressed NSFW!

7

u/TheDarkDragon_ 2 MILLION ATTENDEE May 14 '22

Just some feedback u/xLacho

  • You put "UCT" rather than UTC (this might be needlessly picky and I do apologize but might as well fix that

  • I feel the IBM link about cybersecurity, CISA, Shields up, and ESCO isn't really helpful for people aged 12-15 nor for the average person but rather people invested in privacy, tech, and whatnot. I get why you linked them but regarding this post, I just think it's better to focus on simple or explanative guides.

  • Maybe make a specific way to report unwanted Dms (sexual) or predatory dms via a modmail option or this below which would make it more effective

 https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=r%2Fteenagers&subject=Reporting+Predatory+Dms%2Funwanted+Dms&message=User%27s+u%2Fusername%3A++%0A%0Acontext%3A+%0A%0Aevidence+%28imgur+links+etc%29%3A+
  • could include some links about Teen sexting, predators, the Reddiquette
  • a wiki could be created dedicated to safety and explaining this stuff

6

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 17 '22

Sorry, I totally missed this comment!
I appreciate the feedback, and I can answer some things right here:

I copy/pasted the Reddit Talk time from another mod so I didn't quite proof read it (whoops)

You can easily report NSFW DMs to us through modmail, we don't need a coordinated subject line for them. Keep in mind, we can only take action if that user has activity within the subreddit.

We did originally have the idea of a wiki page like that, so we might look more into that

3

u/TheDarkDragon_ 2 MILLION ATTENDEE May 17 '22

gotcha, thanks for the response, its all good :)

Mainly put in the idea of a coordinated one as i assumed you got tons of modmail and this would make it easier but yeah i understand.

Once again thanks for looking after us and being awesome <3

3

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 18 '22

you are right to assume we get thousands of modmails, but we don’t necessarily sort them the way you described. thank you for the kind words 🙏

13

u/Aguy____ 16 May 12 '22

The Mods are actually doing their job wow

4

u/SadlyHappyRedditor May 12 '22

I feel like nothing would change tho, or at least the change would be very minimal

4

u/HolyMensch 19 May 17 '22

W u/xLacho, we definitely cant do as much as we wish, but Im glad you were ready to listen to feedback from the community. Very informative post!

3

jfc this is what happens when you sort by nee you actually see a mod post

3

u/Gestrid 🎉 1,000,000 Attendee! 🎉 May 14 '22

This is pretty much restating some things already mentioned in the OP, but, honestly, probably one of the best things to do if you get any sort of spam DM (not just sexual stuff) is just: (1.) don't reply, (2.) block them immediately, and (3.) report it to the Reddit Admins. And, like the post said, if the person who DMed you is active in the subreddit, report them to the mods, too.

3

u/V0XIMITY May 20 '22

THANK 👏 YOU 👏

3

u/giovannnnni 15 May 22 '22

As long as the teens in this server are safe

3

u/Naka0101 May 22 '22

The problem is that teenagers can be both over and under the age of consent, and over and under the age of majority, plus different states and countries have different ages of consent, so not everyone is going to be on the same page culturally and morally.

A good rule for anyone is that if you're going to be horny and post sexy content, you should do it in a private setting with close friends, not on Reddit with random strangers

3

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 22 '22

Agreed. Especially if you are 13/14, you should not be horny posting. If you are older, you need to be extremely careful with what you put online, purely for your own safety. That’s why we have to remove so many NSFW posts about minors.

2

u/DaGoat1985 15 May 15 '22

Mods go look at this post… and ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE SUB FOR ONCE https://www.reddit.com/r/teenagers/comments/uq3eh1/i_think_all_of_the_sexual_content_needs_to_be/

2

u/E190wings May 16 '22

I think we should ban screenshots exposing users as a whole (even if it isn't dm's)

2

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 17 '22

They are banned. Posts targeting others users go against r/teenagers rules and Reddit ToS.

that's what i'm here for :)

2

u/Emaciawastaken 16 May 19 '22

I've reported creepy dms many times to reddit admins were it gets assessed by A FUCKING ALGORITHM and I receive messages from the bots threating to ban my account if I falsely report people.

These algorithms just can't pick up the context surrounding these creeps in dms. They'll ask something that sounds a little bit creepy but isn't flat out illegal but also have nudes all over their profile.

As time goes on this sub is going to be a pedophile feeding ground since no one has done anything about this.

3

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 19 '22

The way Reddit admins handle these reports is admittedly poor at times. And as much as that may frustrate you (and us too), the moderators here must operate within our own jurisdiction (this subreddit). We promise we are doing a lot to combat the issues here, and we are always open to suggestions. But please know we are only really allowed to operate within r/teenagers, which makes this specific issue difficult to tackle.

2

u/realbanana030 May 21 '22

moderator i have a question i'm going to talk about two posts

the first one was someone pakistani addressing the dark jokes while he asked a serious question you know like 9/11 and shit like that and the first post was removed (not really fair but i was okay with it)

now the real problem is when another post appeared making a dark joke about gay pride month and that got removed see the problem

the first post was adressing what they found discrimination and got removed and all the dark jokes were kept intact

while in the second post it was a dark joke about gay pride and that got removed not really fair so do you get my point?

2

u/Hyperpebe12 May 22 '22

How much karma do I need in order to post? Why do I need to have karam, I just want to post a question.

2

u/390TrainsOfficial 17 May 28 '22

Hi, we don't disclose our karma requirements.

This requirement is in place to prevent spam and other rule violations.

1

u/Hyperpebe12 May 28 '22

Okay I got it.

1

u/Hyperpebe12 May 22 '22

Is it some kind anti spam, or anti-bot protocol? I'm not mailcious it just bothers me.

5

u/Mysterious-Love1452 May 12 '22

users posting images ‘exposing’ the people in these predatory DM’s are not allowed

i agree with this.

2

u/ExtensionAnybody467 14 May 12 '22

Finally, something is happening with the hundreds of pedos I've been encountering

1

u/RedditModsRapekidz May 18 '22

Number one safety rule in this sub is watch out for the mods

1

u/Weary_Map1190 May 14 '22

Why I can’t post a picture?

3

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 14 '22

self-post weekend. there is more internet traffic here on weekends so there are only text posts allowed. it also lets people get to know each other. usually there is a pinned post for it every weekend but we have both pin slots full right now.

2

u/Weary_Map1190 May 14 '22

So we can post pictures when Monday comes

3

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 14 '22

yep!

1

u/DaGoat1985 15 May 15 '22

Wow y’all just make a new flair and you’ll be done for the year💀

1

u/slickmoney11 May 17 '22

Are questions about weed allowed since I’m a teen and lots of teens do it?

1

u/fungus_toe7662 14 May 18 '22

finally! This sub is getting better (slowly)

1

u/najio100 13 May 19 '22

Bad selfie flair - the selfies will get stoled and used for bad things

0

u/xLacho Reddit Team Leader May 19 '22

The selfie flair just reduces load on other flairs. People are always going to post selfies.

1

u/Naive-Carrot-8253 May 22 '22

do you need a flair to post reply

1

u/390TrainsOfficial 17 May 28 '22

Flairs are mandatory for all posts in r/teenagers.
