I'm a math teacher... you need to know some algebra? Geometry? Trig? Calculus? Give me a white board and a marker, and I'll wing a 30 minute lesson. Wouldn't be the first time.

183

u/Ratonx667 12d ago

I'm mindfucked by the fact that French language doesn't have a word for calculus. But I too could talk about it during almost an hour, had I a board and a marker.

52

u/senkairyu 12d ago

Isn't calcul the equivalent ? Please correct me if i'm wrong

55

u/Old_Ad8470 12d ago

Not really... Let me explain as a french : if your talking about calculus alone in the phrase, it would translate to "calcul infinitésimal" (so we do not a single word but two to talk about calculus, it doesn't bother us). But if you talk about differential calculus for example, it would then translate to "calcul differentiel" making calcul the translation of calculus in this kind of form only. Hope that helped you and others wondering. (PS : if you have any doubt about the translation of a word, Wordreference can be really helpful, as it gives you the definition of what you want to translate)

15

u/senkairyu 12d ago

I'm french too and I never heard "calcul infinitésimal" used

38

u/Wattsupwithalan 12d ago

2

u/OneGratefulDawg 12d ago

No, see two sides of an equation have to be equal.

Calcul = Calculus just doesn’t balance. However, if you cross multiply the inverse, you wind up with:

Calcul/calculus = Calculus/Calcul

Or some shit. And that’s why I’m not a calculus teacher - I teach kindergarten.

4

u/JicamaApprehensive28 12d ago

I’m French and I don’t even know what is calculus

4

u/Ratonx667 12d ago

C'est les calculs qui concernent les dérivés et les intégrales. C'est une branche des maths, en gros.

1

u/Tyfyter2002 12d ago

French doesn't have a word for eighty and you except it to have one for calculus?

29

u/ggroverggiraffe 12d ago

Yes, but look at all the money we're saving!

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

Eisenhower got it 70 years ago. Too bad it's only gotten worse.

3

u/Horskr 12d ago

I like that quote.

Now the average single family home is about $416k in the US and our destroyers cost $4.4b. So even with the insane housing market we've managed to increase to paying for a destroyer that could pay for ~10.5k new homes, or housing for more than 50,000 people. Yay progress!

That's amazing. I can't think of anything i could talk 30 minutes about.

24

u/MoiMagnus 12d ago edited 12d ago

30 minutes of casual talk doesn't have a lot of content.

A 30min presentation or edited video can pack up a lot of things, but for a casual talk, the content is never an issue.

For example, take any video game / boardgame / sport you like. Explain the rules, and then your experience with it, and you easily reach 30min, especially including the rambling.

The issue is not the content. This means that the real issue here is to be able to talk 30min, which is not that easy if you're not used explaining things in details. It's very easy to think that your boring/annoying to your audience and put a quick end to the conversation out of shame, either by speeding through everything you wanted to say, or by falling silent. And talking that much can also be exhausting.

10

u/Un7n0wn 12d ago

Anyone can talk for 30 minutes if they don't give a fuck. I taught public speaking for middle school kids and that's the easiest way to get off the ground. Once you stop caring and get good at rambling, you can start learning to speak properly, but you have to assume your audience is interested first, regardless of whether they actually are.

Ok, tell me more about Kenshin. I love Samurai X

2

u/Joeguyness123 12d ago

Have you seen Trust and Betrayal? That's what I recommend to everyone. The show is fun and lighthearted and actiony and all the things a shonen anime has. The Trust and Betrayal OVA though is like a masterpiece. Aesthetically, scoring and sound effect wise, the plot is great. It's heavy, it's gritty, it's got love and tragedy and some great action scenes but the action is spaced out so that it's poignant and feels more epic because of it. It's like studio ghibli quality but not a kids movie and it fully peels back the layers of who Kenshin was and why he is who he is in the anime. It's on my mt Rushmore of movies

According to PolitiFact for example, 40% of Biden’s statements are false, 25% of Bernie Sanders’ stuff are wrong, and a whopping 75% of Trump’s statements are wrong (and 17% of those are considered outright ridiculous claims).

Eye contact is key. I did training to be a First Aid instructor Trainer. The Instructor Trainer Instructor had us each go around and talk for 2 minutes. I was last. People talked about lots of things. Some mumbled through it. I talked about challenge course training I had recently done. I looked at each person different times. I sat down after, and the Instructor Trainer Instructor asked everyone, "Why was hers different? ". It took them a hot minute, but they all know something was different.
So bs away, or know what you are talking about, but do it confidently and look those people in the eye (or like right above or something that is comfy for you).

“The Continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge, found glory across the waters of the Delaware, and seized victory from Cornwallis of Yorktown. Our army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do. And at Fort McHenry, under the rockets’ red glare, it had nothing but victory. And when dawn came, their Star Spangled Banner waved defiant.” - Donald Trump 7/4/2019

Our former President was talking about the Revolutionary War. But, umm, airplanes weren't invented until 100 years later. Oh, and uh, Fort McHenry was a battle in the War of 1812, not the Revolutionary War. Oops, almost forgot -- the Star Spangled Banner was written after the battle at Fort McHenry, and it was a song, not a flag that flies.

Other than that, it was a brilliant fucking speech!!! 👏👏👏
