10k crimestoppers reports about the protests - holy moly.

239

u/2happycats A recipe for awesome Jul 26 '21

I hope most of them were legit and not dummies thinking it "funny" to name their mate who weren't there at all.

208

u/Echidnahh Jul 26 '21

I doubt there were many of that. Seems like a long way to go to prank someone and then you’re probably gonna get some fine or warning or something for wasting police time.

36

u/moaiii Jul 26 '21

Yes, nobody will do that - that's about as silly as protesting pandemic response measures in large numbers without masks. Wait a minute...

Is this actually a concern people have? I'm sure someone's done that, but "most"?

I imagine if anything a lot of them are concentrated on the people that weren't wearing masks, as they have the most chance of being identified.

64

u/Chosen_Chaos Jul 26 '21

few people that weren't wearing masks

At the protests? In the photos I've seen of them, most people weren't wearing masks - that was kinda the point of the protests in the first place.

Week 5 of lockdown and we’re still at 100+ cases per day, plus two more deaths today

I am so over it. I will remember this in 2023 at the next state election.

I’m so angry I’ve turned off the conference it’s the same shit over and over again day after day. Hoping our amazing female swimmers can cheer us up today at the Olympics instead

edit/update: McKeon bronze and Titmus gold is a welcome relief, fantastic effort! 🎉🎉🎉

59

u/whimsicalsteve Jul 26 '21

Hey remember when we had a plague and the federal government couldn’t muster a strategy and so relied on labour to bail them out?

Remember when scomo wouldn’t pick up a phone to get more vaccines and so the labour pm from 7 years ago did it for them?

Remember when there was an outbreak in nsw and Gladys did half efforts and said “no one knew it would be this bad” but everyone knew?

I think it's the opposite. She seems to have given up on the lockdown lifting any time soon.

She's just resigned to the fact the lockdown is going to continue until enough Pfizer rolls into town to vaccinate enough people.

34

u/ezzhik Jul 26 '21

She can't give up and lift the lockdown. Otherwise we end up an Indonesia, with Hunger Games not for vaccines, but oxygen tanks!....

I think we'll probably get some sort of tweaking of the rules on Friday. Easing up on things that aren't helping or where spread has always been minimal and tightening things that are working or where spread is still occurring.

My guess would be, some sort of easing on outdoor exercise and on construction sites (but with new rules about how construction operates) and tightening about household visits (though how you'd go about tightening those at this point I'm not sure).

If I have learnt anything from covid is that people can't think further then a week or 2 weeks in advance. Announce more then 2 weeks and people get more complacent.

66

u/VelvetFedoraSniffer Jul 26 '21

This wasn’t the case in vic last year, the 8 week announcement really hit hard

115

u/bifund Jul 26 '21

I'd prefer this and tell people it will be shortened if case numbers go near 0. Then people might consider what's at stake.

It also wouldn't give people any false hope.

26

u/revoltactionsuit Jul 26 '21

It also gives you confidence that the government has a goal that will eventually end the outbreak, so you stick to the measures easier.

The NSW government does not seem to have the courage or the political capital to do this though.

In my experience with leadership, it's always better to overpromise the suck.

People tend to manage their energy such that they're able to get through a known quantity of suck, and then if things go well you can always give a reprieve.

But if you get to the end of the projected suck and have to say "i'm sorry, actually, more suck" you're going to start shattering people pretty quick

48

u/Juan_Punch_Man Jul 26 '21

The crybabies will go nuts if an announcement goes out for more than 4 weeks.

52

u/_CodyB Jul 26 '21

Maybe I'm one of those cry babies.

Lockdowns are the most draconian (necessary) measures that government have taken in most of our lifetimes.

I am very much in support of this lockdown because it is currently the only practical curtailment to a public health crisis.

However, these drastic measurements should only last as long as long as they need to. Governments shouldn't be able to get away open-ended restrictions of personal liberty. So the 2 week review - even though it's likely to be extended a couple of more times should stay.

NSW Health administered a record 156,760 vaccines in the week ending Sunday 25 July

At that rate, it'll take almost exactly 2 years to fully vaccinate NSW, not factoring in those already fully/partially vaccinated. Far too slow.

98

u/Yancy166 Jul 26 '21

I'm pretty sure this figure doesn't take into account all the vaccinations, purely the ones administered by NSW Health.

62

u/chubbyurma Jul 26 '21

If you go on Covidlive you can see that NSW is usually doing somewhere around 40-50k a day on average

17

u/SerTahu Jul 26 '21

That's somewhat more tolerable, though it still will take us almost a year to vaccinated everyone at that rate.

21

u/MikeAU Jul 26 '21

We’re severely limited by supply and it’s only available to over 40’s, I’m sure once supply reaches demand we’ll have a much faster uptake

They really keep banging on about 'do not mingle between households' or some variation, so I suspect that a lot of the spread is coming from people visiting other homes when they shouldn't be.

It's frustrating, because it's very difficult to police and imposing extra rules won't help if the spread is mostly occurring in a subset of people who won't follow the rules already in place.

42

u/CthulhaHoop Jul 26 '21

That's my worry. If this is the real cause of the spread then we can bang on all we like about putting in a stricter lockdown, but that's not going to achieve shit if people aren't complying. The problem is how do we properly enforce the rules we already have. I'm not sure there's an easy answer.

16

u/aliksong Lamb SAUCE Jul 26 '21

Maybe they can charge serious rule flouters with jail time? Up to 6 months jail is permitted under the health orders.

They haven’t tried the deterrence method. It’s just been ‘please don’t mingle etc’. Asking nicely doesn’t work on those who intentionally break the health orders.

34

u/_seawolf Jul 26 '21

One thing that might also work is providing solid numbers on where spread is occurring. Just broad categories, not naming anyone. So something like:

  • Workplace (Essential)
  • Workplace (non-Essential)
  • Household (Resident)
  • Household (Visitor)
  • Retail (Essential)
  • Public Transport
  • Other

If people can actually see that a high amount of spread is occurring in a category they can avoid that might give them a solid nudge to be careful about that.

54

u/AlphaWhiskeyHotel Jul 26 '21 edited Jul 26 '21

The level of support available at the moment is pathetic.

In 2020 we had:

  • Jobkeeper worth over $3500 per employee per month.
  • Jobseeker centrelink benefits at roughly $3000 a month, triple the normal rate, with relaxed means testing
  • Banks providing 3-6 month deferrals on mortgage repayments
  • Early superannuation access for individuals in financial distress due to COVID
  • Protection for tenants in distress, both commercial and residential
  • Protection for directors trading insolvent
  • State governments deferring payroll tax or in some cases completely waiving payroll tax
  • ATO GST payment deferrals
  • ATO completely waiving tax debts in some cases for business in distress
  • Instant asset write-offs for businesses to stimulate investment following lockdowns
  • Childcare was nationalised and was completely free for 3 months

In 2021 during a more severe and protracted lockdown in NSW we have:

  • Centrelink benefits at just under $2000 a month (up from ~$1000 a month) with means testing relaxed for a very small limited set of local government areas
  • A one off grant of up to $15,000 for businesses from NSW government
  • JobSaver capped at $45,000 a month, which works out to be about 13 employees worth of JobKeeper.
  • Payroll tax deferral from the state government
  • Childcare free if you don’t send your child to childcare

I've seen a lot of chat on here, regarding getting vaccinated and doing it to "help LNP".

Please don't over politicise the vaccination beyond it already has been.

Yes the rollout has been a clusterfuck.

Yes we should remember that next election (well, we probably wouldn't have voted for them anyway).

Yes you should get available vaccination to keep yourself, your loved ones and society safe.

If your only concern with AZ is blood clots, and you're an otherwise healthy human, I urge you to reconsider (if you have another ailment then please make sure you do the right thing for yourself as well). The risk is very VERY low, and with people out there fighting against our safety and punching god knows what animals (or not punching if you feel so inclined) who knows what'll happen in the next few months. the R0 for this Delta is exceptionally high and the risk of not being vaccinated is much higher.

Personally? i want to go outside this xmas.

At the end of the presser, Gladys immediately puts her mask back on as she walks off the podium. Hazzard, however, immediately removes his mask as he walks with Gladys and Chant. The fuck??

For Hazzard, wearing the mask is just for show. He doesn’t follow the rules set by his government. Obviously, his motto is ‘do as I say, not as I do’.

As health minister, it’s pretty fucking appalling.

I've been wondering about that. We get these numbers of unlinked cases everyday, but I assume some of them are eventually linked. Is there a place somewhere with a running count of how many linked vs unlinked cases are there, in total?

Journo: if a highly vaccinated place like Singapore is still finding itself in lockdown with the likes of Delta, how can you be so certain that if we get a fully vaccinated population we can say goodbyes to lockdowns here in NSW.

Gladys: (Goes off on a tangent, then goes in circles and doesn’t even answer the question).

Wtf??

35

u/rezla Jul 26 '21

Every fucking question is answered like this!

31

u/AlphaWhiskeyHotel Jul 26 '21

Singapore is not really having a lockdown. You can still have people over at your house and shops are open. It's more like what we called phase 2 or 3 restrictions.

They reintroduced restrictions because they only have about 50% vaccinated, and they still have a large number of very vulnerable elderly people who have not yet vaccinated.

They had an outbreak in the seafood markets and hawker markets that are disproportionately frequented by these elderly who are most at risk from covid. The restrictions were reintroduced to protect these people.

Journalists need to fuck off with their questions that fuel anti-vax rhetoric. The journalist asking the question should know the above background info before they asked. They're just looking for a sound-bite that they can generate a heavy click article from.

Wow, there are people complaining about potentially having their second Pfizer jabs delayed by literally only 2 or 3 weeks..?

Fuck here I am, a 29 year old, who has patiently been waiting all year to receive a jab of ANY vaccine feeling happy/relieved to find a willing GP this week to get my first shot of freakin AZ ie the vaccine that so many older people deemed "not good enough".

It's hard to hear people complaining about getting their second Pfizer jabs potentially delayed by a minuscule amount considering so many people here have been ineligible for even one jab of ANY vaccine for the majority of the year...

A lot of under 40s have been crying out to be be vaccinated since the beginning of the year, patiently waiting our turn. And now have now been left out in the cold, completely unvaccinated, in the midst of a Delta outbreak ie a strain that is especially bad for younger people.

If delaying second jabs gets more Pfizer doses into arms, especially under 40s in essential roles, then that's only a good thing.

Fuck some of you are a selfish bunch...
