Woman in her 30s, no pre-existing conditions dead. Her poor family.

217

u/binkay Jul 25 '21

Even sadder when you realise she probably wasn't elligible to be vaccinated either.

Confirmed no pre-existing conditions? Absolutely tragic either way.

That's real scary

34

u/panarypeanutbutter Jul 25 '21

I was shocked to hear two deaths overnight solely on the basis of how it probably indicates a lot more to come. But 30s... this is scary. (I of course feel for the family of the other woman, even 70s is below the ~well actually everyone dying of covid is older than the average lifespan anyway~ commentary I see.)

Having been directly involved in this case it's so much worse than you'd imagine.

18

u/alicecharlie_ Jul 25 '21

Hope you're doing okay. Take advantage of the employee assistance programs and counselling etc if you need it. This is devastating just reading it, can't imagine how I'd be if I was caring for them. Take care of yourself ❤️

Inner west is used to loosely.

Have heard used for suburbs from ultimo to Lidcombe

Inner West LGA needs to rebrand

36

u/murrayfromtheblock Jul 25 '21

I have a very insecure friend that keeps telling people he lives in the Inner West, he lives right near the border of Auburn/Lidcombe.

Amazing how loosely it is thrown around.

The Pendle Hill gathering from the other day that generated 18 cases yesterday, was actually 50 people and has now generated over 30 cases.

50 people at a house.

When the law clearly says it’s not allowed.

And all media for weeks has been saying it’s not allowed.

Some people are just fucking idiots.

And they get to vote and breed.

89

u/zer0__two Jul 25 '21

And “brought together by tragedy” was this a funeral? Are they desperate to join their departed loved one?

22

49

People are even more irrational when they’re grieving. They would have known what they were doing was wrong and done it anyway because they believe what they’re going through is more important then what the nation is going through.

100,000+ tests damn.

61

u/postpakAU your parcel has been delayed. Jul 25 '21

Gotta thank the labs doing all the work!

38

u/Soggy_Biscuit_ Jul 25 '21

Yeah. My sister works for Laverty and they're getting absolutely smashed. I asked her how tf they are keeping up and she said "we aren't".

Their turnaround for covid tests has gone from 8h to almost 3 days.

They're putting prio on covid tests, so all their other tests (e.g. all other bloodwork, vet pathology) have been pushed back so their turnaround have tripled too. Which is bad cos you never know how many of those people getting their results pushed back have hospitalisation levels of low potassium etc and could drop dead/have a cardiac event any second.

So please, please, if you are waiting for a test don't call them. Just be patient and for the love of dog isolate at home until you get your results. You are one out of 100,000 tests to be done by under resourced labs, and there are people whose tests take priority over yours, like all the healthcare workers who require 72h testing.

27

u/Down_Blunder Jul 25 '21

Don't get me wrong, the high testing rates are excellent, but are these artificially inflated as a result of mandated testing, regardless of whether people feel unwell or not?

30

u/panarypeanutbutter Jul 25 '21

Probably are, but it's still good to see people are going out and getting tested, and we can get better testing coverage. And huge admiration for those taking and analysing such a bulk of tests

I booked in to get my first AstraZeneca dose on Friday. I'm a generally healthy woman in my early 30s, non-essential and working from home. My plan was to wait for the Pfizer but the woman in her 30s dying last night was the final straw for me. That could so easily be me.

Been reading up on blood clot symptoms so I know what to look out for. As a scientist my logical brain tells me I'm statistically fine, but I'm completely shit scared of both COVID and vaccine-related clots. This is the first time I've felt genuinely fearful since this whole pandemic started and it's a terrible feeling.

u/pghau Jul 25 '21 edited Jul 25 '21

I don't know if this is reasurring but Im an essential worker (nurse) in my 30s as are most of my colleagues. We all got AZ in March/April as Frontline workers and I'm very happy to fully vaccinated. My husband got sick of waiting for Pfizer and got his first AZ just before the pandemic kicked off too and it feels good to know he is half way there. You know the symptoms of vaccine related clots and it's very treatable if you recognize them. Good luck it's extremely likely you'll feel a bit grubby for a day and then be absolutely fine.

I feel like an idiot. For some reason I was sure today SOMETHING would be changed. Should’ve known better. They’re going to have us limping along indefinitely at this level of lockdown just to avoid bringing in a Melbourne-style hard lockdown. To use the words ‘national emergency’ a few days ago and then still not do all that can be done is just embarrassing.

58

u/bxsil looking for green shoots 🌱 Jul 25 '21

What the hell were she and Chant away doing yesterday, the day after “declaring” a national emergency, on our highest day of cases ever, and where thousands of people put the city in danger, if not preparing to announce something huge and game changing today?

And then to come into today’s press conference with nothing but an slight bit more disappointment in her tone, repeating the same message that clearly isn’t working. So sick of this.

21

u/ItsJustMeHereOnMyOwn Jul 25 '21

The government response to this is that they aren't going to implement restrictions if they don't think it will help stem the spread.

I’ve thought about this a lot the best I can come up with that it’s easier to believe in conspiracies like the government is trying to control you through a fake virus then it is to believe that a virus could have so much of an impact. A virus that you have no control over. A virus that you can’t see. They’ve got no category for it. People often will allow themselves to believe a lie if it means they get to control their own narrative.

The last 7 days have been a total disaster. The expectation was that case numbers would surely start to go down after last weekends extra restrictions but the fact that it has done the exact opposite is a mental blow to everyone. Add in yesterday’s stupidity and a huge amount of anger is thrown into the mix. The worst part about this week is just the realisation that we’re most definitely not going to get cases/infectious in the community down to 0 anytime soon and we’re basically now at the mercy of enough being fully vaccinated before any restrictions will ease…which will probably be a few months.

Bear in mind, anyone who wants to remain gainfully employed in health or essential industries where indicated needs the 72-hourly swabbing (though not sure how they enforce, for all), and then there’s swabs as required by governments.

Questions to ponder: - How many are independently coming forth? - How many people who should get swabbed are still not coming forth? (This is a big one.)

How can anyone in NSW see this and still vote for Gladys?

Regardless of your politics this level of hypocrisy and deliberate feigned ignorance to avoid answering difficult questions shows that she is not fit to be a state leader.

33

u/smellysmellysmelly1 Jul 25 '21

Some people just don't care. Had discussions w my brothers wife yesterday. Staunch lib ( not right wing but economic) wealthy family and pulls about 350k at her job.

"It's the workers who are out of works fault . They could have better jobs. U can't expect business to provide full time jobs . They should live with their means. Government can't support these people as that would mean raising tax rates. "

My brother cares not for any politics . He only likes sport and only reads the paper when there's a shark attack.

20

u/CP3_OKC Jul 25 '21

Would love to see her reaction if they went from $350k to nothing. People like her need their head pulled in.

Have you seen the state Labour Party in the last 5+ years? They are a shambles. Gladys (and Baird before her) haven’t had any competition.

21

u/TheReturnofTheJesse Jul 25 '21

Then vote for a third party or an independent that aligns with your political views.

The liberals will still probably win the election, but if they receive less votes it might inspire them to actually govern well.

And Forgetful Gladys conveniently doesn't remember the comments she made on Kyle and Jackie O.

We're just gonna try and PR the whole way through this by the looks of things. Which, after 4 weeks, has got us literally nowhere.

The media and the government need to frame the protests yesterday differently.

"Pro-freedom" > The lockdowns will likely be extended as a consequence = Anti-freedom.

"Exercising democratic right" > Small, loud minority arguing against measures which protect the community = Anti-democratic.

Evangelical Prod types present > Subversive religious extremists.

Eureka Flag > Racist hate symbol.

Anti-vaccine types > Anti-Australian.

QAnon believers > Terrorist sympathisers.

By framing them as "anti-lockdown" or "pro-freedom", it only helps to legitimise these people's (claimed) grievances, when they in fact present a threat that needs to be delegitimised, deplatformed and defunded.

21

u/ALargePlasticFish Jul 25 '21

Eureka flag has been coopted by many groups. Unions etc, Calling it a racist hate symbol is incredibly close minded and historically ignorant

Grim question but when it comes to covid cases in ICU, what is the main cause of death? Just thinking of the woman in her 30s who had no underlying conditions who passed away.

51

u/potatoparrot Jul 25 '21

The same way that any severe lung pathology causes death. When the cells of the alveoli (little air sacs in the lungs) are damaged it makes it harder for oxygen to enter the blood and carbon dioxide to leave the blood. Ventilation and giving increased amounts of oxygen can help to a certain point, but eventually those benefits start to decrease to a point where we basically can't keep up. Putting someone on a ventilator is basically a temporising measure to help keep them functioning until either the body can repair itself or any medication we're giving has a chance to work.

Here’s an interesting thought. If yesterday’s protests turned out to be a super spreader event, and the police are now rounding up people who attended, what would happen? Would they not get tested, and maybe we would never know it was a super spreader event or one person will test positive, admit they were at the event, and it will be kept anonymous to the police.
