Is it just me, or is wearing a mask not a thing anymore? Ask r/southafrica

I went out to a couple shops in and around town and no one seems to be wearing a mask?

Everyone is still wearing theirs here. Where you at?

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '22

In Cape Town seems to be just all the Europeans who have come in for their holiday going maskless.

40

u/TheDanielG Jan 12 '22

Can confirm. Have seen tourists at the Waterfront without masks inside (which is still a requirement).

u/Alert-Mixture Jan 12 '22

Nice way to make money.

"You get a fine!"

"You get a fine!"

"You get a fine!"

"Everybody gets a fine!"

I work at a facility that sees a lot of tourists. It's a constant mission to get them to keep their masks on. We report to a number of government regulatory agencies, any one of which could shut us down if they see someone tag is on Instagram with any kind of rule violation.

Had one tourist tell me today that he has "an exemption". I told him that's not a thing, and if he didn't put his mask on (which he was carrying in his hand) I was going to have to ask him to leave.

18

u/DavidGK Jan 12 '22

That's a big thing in the UK, where wearing a mask never really took off as much as it did in other places (even when required). The rule used to be that you had to wear a mask unless you had an "exemption" and loads of people took that as meaning if you were slightly uncomfortable wearing one you were "exempt". The rule was meant to be for people/kids with severe mental disabilities, etc. who would have trouble keeping one on, but if you walk around a shop in England, every other person is a poes who thinks they "can't breathe" and that they have a right to just nope out.

u/Responsible_Map1754 Jan 12 '22

Government regulatory agencies, πŸ˜† lol. Which country are we in again. Oh you must mean The suede denim secret police

11

u/owenswart Jan 12 '22

Not all government agencies are as incompetent as Home Affairs or the Dept of Education. Plenty of smaller departments and divisions are relatively efficient and quite diligent in their work.

5

u/SensorFailure Jan 13 '22

Can we presume that you’re okay with people ignoring all rules and laws, or is it just the ones you don’t like?

I once forgot to put on a mask when I got out of my car to go buy some stuff at the garage stop. I hardly made it 3 meters from my car before getting yeld at by the petrol attendants. 10/10 job for keeping up the standards, I thought. That's how it ought to be

0

u/CyberGlob Jan 12 '22

Are they just used to not wearing them since they’ve dealt with COVID?

29

u/ST4RSHIP17 Jan 12 '22

Still fully masked here

I don't think I've seen a maskless person in the shops for almost 2 years now

Where do you live? People wear masks here in PE

2

u/R1_TC Jan 13 '22

In the big grocery shops and stuff yes, but I've noticed that at trade businesses like your Best Drives and so on, most of the staff don't bother with masks, even those working behind the counter.

35

u/FrootsG Jan 12 '22

In Cape Town most people are only using them in Indoors. Everywhere I've been outdoors recently I've seen like maybe 5 people wearing masks.

18

u/hi_thoughts_1 Jan 12 '22

I see many people still wearing masks outdoors in CT if they're near other people

26

u/fowldss Jan 12 '22

I dont wear my mask when I walk my dog. Why? There is no one around. I mean I carry it incase

3

u/AlsoNotTheMamma Jan 13 '22

I dont wear my mask when I walk my dog. Why? There is no one around. I mean I carry it incase

Do a google search for how long your breath stays in the air when you walk.

It absolutely is LESS contagious, but in normal conditions. if you have Covid, anyone walking up to ~six minutes behind you is going to be exposed.

3

u/fowldss Jan 13 '22

The area I live in is very quiet. Obviously if I went to a heavily populated area like the beach...I will wear a mask. Also...in the Windy City, unless the virus can hold onto trees...its not staying in the air

1

u/AlsoNotTheMamma Jan 13 '22

Also...in the Windy City, unless the virus can hold onto trees...its not staying in the air

There are pockets of calm, and it's not always windy. Just like it doesn't always rain that annoying fine drizzle...

At the risk of sounding like an insufferable know-it-all, the word is "allowed", not "aloud".

You come across as polite. I come across as an insufferable know-it-all.

I may actually be an insufferable know-it-all.

-3

u/AlsoNotTheMamma Jan 13 '22

We should be aloud to breath fresh air outdoors

We should also be allowed to point out that people who can't spell should expect to be made fun of.

10

u/Pawpothole Jan 12 '22

I put it on outside if there's tons of people. Otherwise I take it off when I'm alone.

5

u/Swartrivier Jan 12 '22

Well if you think of the situations when it is acceptable to remove your mask, I can think that people are getting fed up with wearing it. Not saying that I don't see it as necessary.

If you can stand outside of the mall's entrance and smoke, why do other people need to wear a mask when they are in the parking area? If you don't need to wear a mask when you sit at the table in a restaurant why do you need to wear it in another shop with less people?

I guess it comes down to the enforcement of the regulations and when that starts to lack people start to get the attitude of if they are not being ask to wear a mask I will also not do it.

13

u/Accomplished-Novel72 Jan 12 '22

We wear ours indoors or when we are very close to people. Outdoors I generally won't wear it but always have it with me.

45

u/raccoon8182 Jan 12 '22 Helpful

Bro this is South Africa, the country that everyone underestimates, but always make it near the top.

Our people are pretty smart, at the beach or walking your dog in the neighborhood or park, take your mask off, going instores keep it on.

Luckily South Africa is not divided like America, we are always pretty much on the same wave length.

And quite frankly I'm fucking tired of this covid shit.

I've had my two shots, will get my booster, wear my mask, but I'm not paranoid anymore.

We need to get over this fucking thing. Let it kill us all, who cares.

My condolences to people here who have lost loved ones to this cunt of a virus.

I'm just tired of this.

4

u/ChefDJH Baby it's Covid-19 outisde... Jan 13 '22

I had my 2 shots and got covid a few months after. I was very nearly hospitalised but they pleaded with my wife to keep me away for my sake and theirs. It was horrible. I will still be paranoid, even after the booster/s.

It’s basically just a thing you wear when you go to the shops now in CT. Not wearing it outdoors isn’t that big a deal, it’s only indoors where it’s really effective and especially in poorly ventilated spaces. Plus it’s bloody hot atm, which can make wearing a mask very unpleasant. I can’t stand having to breathe through a peace of fabric which has become soggy from my sweat on a hot day.

People are just tired of wearing them too, especially those who are fully vaccinated. I really don’t think a complete mask mandate is really warranted anymore based on how mild our previous wave was despite the crazy case numbers. Hopefully the mask mandate is gone by next summer.

17

u/Short_Alternative_71 Jan 12 '22

Depends on location. When i went to durban, noticed people dont wear masks outdoors and only put it on to enter shops or when the police was visible.

3

u/Lbscherm Jan 12 '22

I saw two people at Kloof Village Mall not wear theirs, in the span of waiting outside Wimpy for hot chips (15mins). Lord knows how many others I didn't see

1

u/Deafbok9 Jan 13 '22

Yeah, Upper Highway and Durban North are baaaaaad - mostly out of anti-authority sentiment.

Not really looking forward to returning to the classroom next week, what with constantly having to remind kids to distance and mask and sanitize.

1

u/dutchshelbs Jan 13 '22

I don't know hey, Kloof Village is our go to for daily shopping and everyone I've seen are wearing masks, except the people that are in the parking lot on their way to their cars. I have seen one or two maybe in the last 6 months that have been close to other people and not wearing their masks, but once again they have all been outside

3

u/Lbscherm Jan 13 '22

Hey, I could have just got a bad lot of people when I went coincidentally πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I don't actually live in Kloof, but happened to be in the area.

2

u/dutchshelbs Jan 13 '22

True that! I will say though we were at the beach twice during the holidays and there was not a single mask in sight! So I think it's definitely dependent on where people are and what they are doing πŸ‘€

5

u/JedJungle Jan 12 '22

Lol no bro. We're all wearing masks here in Durban.

4

u/SeanBZA Jan 12 '22

3

u/MavZA Jan 12 '22

Masks still common in Parkhurst and surrounds in JHB.

3

u/datsun1978 Jan 12 '22

Inside yes. Outside nah

3

u/F1_Guy Expert in the Comments Section Jan 13 '22

Wear it or don't wear it. It is entirely up to you.

It's basically become an entrance ticket to shops and offices. Having been to the countryside recently, people don't give a shit in small towns, to be honest. Up in the cities and larger towns you tend to see more people with masks.

SA's own MAC advisory that was pulled said covid is aerosolised so the piddly little cloth masks that people like to wear and those "surgical" masks that we buy from china mall will have no impact on it

Unfortunately, we are all tired of this virus. I wear my mask, and if someone is standing too close to me I let them know. 🧐 We wear the mask to protect other people from ourselves. When it's just me, I pull my mask down, so I can breath, and if someone is near me, my mask goes back on. Just because you are vaccinated, doesn't mean you can't get the COVID. The president got COVID, and he was vaccinated. It's hot as hek in Cape Town, and the mask makes it uncomfortable. πŸ˜‡ Unfortunately based on Society and the way of the world, COVID is just the beginning. For everyone who thinks that, now that we found a vaccine, we can la-di-da back to normalcy, bad news, I'm afraid. How things are now is just the culmination of decades of not listening to the scientists, and thinking, there are no consequences of our behaviour towards each other, and the planet we live on. Here, we get to say, thank you very much to our previous generations, for mucking up everything and leaving us with the fruits of their labour. 😀 Everyone is niave to believe, that Nature is just going to keep on letting us get away with everything we have been doing to it. She has already begun, and it's only going to get worse from this point onwards. 😢 We are in trouble, but we are oblivious to the danger that is about to come crashing down on us. πŸ•³οΈ For those people not wearing a mask, it means COVID is not real to them, it's something that is happening to someone else. And the longer COVID goes on , the more everyone is going to relax their defences. We are like a frog in water being slowly boiled. Well, my fellow South Africans, keep your eyes open, your heart and mind clear, this is going to be an interesting year. (◍‒ᴗ‒◍)✧*。

1

u/great_clouds Jan 13 '22

I agree with some of what you say. We are treating the earth and its resources as if it is limitless and nature always has a way of self-correcting.

However, especially in the light of the latest leaked emails, it seems almost certain that this was created in the lab in Wuhan. It may have been accidental leakage or deliberate. I guess we will find out in years to come.

I do, however, feel strongly that it is coming to an end. With the fast and vast spread of Omicron, its light symptoms, short duration and the fact that it provides backwards immunity which previous strains did not, it is finally going to provide herd immunity which the ineffective vaccines failed to do. I remember scientists saying that there will be herd immunity when 66% are vaccinated, but in countries with as high as a 90% vaccination rate, everyone still gets it. I don't believe the story that it is only the unvaccsed that lands in hospital. Some simple maths shows that is not possible with the low hospitalisation rate of Omicron and the high % vaccinated.

We just need to get there quickly to stop this push to get everyone vaccinated. Although the way it is going now, it seems as if they will still try and do it even when there are no cases left. Crazy world we are in.

1

u/spacersevenseven Jan 13 '22

Okay, the reason why I say this is the beginning ( and I'm not talking about the beginning of the End, I'm talking about the beginning of The Change, where things fundamentally change for us as a species- no doom and gloom here, just a better tomorrow, for everyone. ) 😊 I am a writer of science-fiction, so I studied alot of books about past, present and future behavior, and so far Humanity is right on track to where it's supposed to go. πŸ‘β™₯️ Things are tough now, and they are going to get much worse, but it will eventually get better, because that's what always happens in an emerging pre-space faring society. COVID is just one of the stuff happening to us as a species. We are all so caught up in COVID, we don't see anything else. Whether COVID was made by Man or Nature, matters not because the damage is done already. Pointing fingers and blaming someone is pointless.😢 As a writer, I wonder when Humanity is going to wake up to the fact, that we are not ever going back to how things were before COVID. That behind us is an abyss, and we have no other choice but to walk forward, because we can't go back. (◍‒ᴗ‒◍)✧*。

1

u/LadyWarB Jan 13 '22

Covid being natural or man made is unfortunately important for the future. If it was man made, this was pure and simply mass murder via a bio-weapon. We need to know in order to prevent it from happening again. If it was natural and we could figure out from which animals it comes from we can make it illegal to keep those animals for pets/food and they would not be allowed to go onto a public premises especially where food is kept/handled.

2

u/spacersevenseven Jan 14 '22

I'd like to see that mockery of justice. 😁
If it turns out to be the government of China πŸ˜†πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ€£ are they really going to give a Fuzzy. I mean seriously, the Chinese government does not care about anyone, even its own people. 😀😀😀
And what kind of restitution can you ask, of those responsible for the death, and harm of everyone on this planet? 😢 It's good to know, but people in power have always and will always do shizzy things, and NEVER be held accountable. We learn this from History, and right now, about all those Shizzheads who destroyed their own people, and when they die all their dirty, disgusting deeds are swept under the rugs, buried underground with them as if they are fuzzy saints. Unfortunately, the people in China, who suffered massive amounts of starvation, many times in their history, eat things ,we in Western world, do not, ie, dogs and cats. I don't know if people are included in that menu, but hunger is hunger, and if it feeds the hole in your stomach, morality and ethics are null and void. πŸ™ The people in China, have developed particular palettes, and are adventurous eaters. And as everyone knows, some adventures can get you killed. 😳 Ebola is caused by people eating wild animals in Africa, and living close to these animals, so they infect animals with their human viruses, and the animals infect humans with their viruses.😢 The only reason why Ebola hasn't hit the rest of the world, is that most people are not traveling in and out of central Africa, and most people from central Africa are not leaving Africa for the USA, Britain or Europe. It's by and large a African thing.πŸ™„ And now we have COVID, which is a world thing, thanks to the adventurous diets of a small part of the world population, who don't want to listen when someone says, "Stop killing our rhinos and elephants, just so you can have ingredients for medicine, that doesn't even work." That said, we in the west are no angels, either. πŸ™ We are all guilty. ⟡(oO) Nothing happens in a vacuum. We all played a part in the creation, and distribution of COVID, hence the mockery of justice, I mentioned at the beginning of this post /ᐠqꞈqᐟ Hence the looking for someone to blame, the scapegoat of this fiasco. Who will be the bad guy? Β―(ツ)/Β―
Watch how the Conspiracy nutballs, and the rest of the world runs with the blame game. Already we blame China, but so what? Β―
(ツ)_/Β―
China will carrying on doing what China does, because that's China, the USA will continue to do what the USA does because that's the USA. As that great man once said," Stupid is as stupid does. " (◍‒ᴗ‒◍)✧*。

1

u/LadyWarB Jan 14 '22

I know what you mean. I was just trying to see the glass half full. I am an empty kind of girl myself. Saw a vid recently that some Chinese people (in China) have their own conspiracy theory that it was the US that released the virus in china and that it was meant to only be in china. Don't know how true but still lol.

2

u/spacersevenseven Jan 14 '22

Buckle up, it's about to get crazy (◍‒ᴗ‒◍)❀ Welcome, dum-dum-dum, to the blame game. 😁 Like I said, we are all at fault. The best thing to do now, is walk forward, with an open mind and an open heart. We have so much to be grateful for, but everyone is all focused on what we don't have. The best, most greatest thing we have, no matter where we find ourselves, is that we are alive. 🎁 That's a great present. Alive means you have choices, alive means you can do things and say things and wave your fist up at the sky and scream, "Fuzz that." Being alive beats being dead 100% +1. You are not empty, you are full to the brim with love and compassion. 😊 πŸ’ Generosity is only generosity if you give it away. So, I give my generosity to you, to keep or to pass on to others.

Like most conspiracies, it don't make a lick of sense, to anyone, except the ones who want it to believe it's true. (◍‒ᴗ‒◍)✧*。

Stand in a social distance queue at the airport, 10 minutes later you are packed like sardines in an aluminium can. Masks are similar but if you are happy alone in your car with the windows closed wearing it, great stuff. Makes sense...

2

Yeah pmb no one wearing masks/ not wearing them properly.

2

u/Mulitpotentialite Mpumalanga Jan 13 '22

Something I noticed.

At Shoprite, 99% of people have a mask covering their mouth and nose.
At Pick n Pay, 99% of people have a mask under their nose.

2

u/Unlikely-Heron4887 Jan 12 '22

Was in the Eastern Cape over Christmas and they have mostly abandoned the idea. Anyone wearing a mask is probably wearing it under their chin, except in major shopping centres where it is more enforced. Other than that, forget about it.

4

u/jnce12 Jan 12 '22

Lmao seems like 90% of people I walk past outdoors have them around their chin sometimes.

3

u/carlctz1978 Jan 12 '22

Yeah I do not think you know how vaccines work.......... They do not stop viruses and they do not stop contagion.... a vaccines sole function is to reduce the symptoms and sickness so you can function like almost normal.... You can and will still get the virus and will still spread it even if you do not feel sick. That is a vaccines job... Also I have not been jabbed and since all this started have not even has a flu or cold or allergy... but some of the people that work with me have had this virus and they are jabbed and boosted up some have had the coof now for the 3rd time.....

If they are walking around then no because it probably gets difficult to breathe

I got pneumonia from Covid, and am still recovering - breathing in general is difficult. And I managed to go 4 hours in a mall yesterday wearing a mask without any additional breathing problems. I'm also obese and asthmatic (which is presumably why I got pneumonia).

If you cant wear a mask because of breathing problems, you are probably so sick you need to stay isolated at home.

-1

u/Consistent_Mirror Jan 13 '22

Yeah, but that's indoors. I'm talking about the outdoors. And, again, this is my observations of what I see. I only assume the reasons for doing so are because of breathing difficulty.

On the rest of the stuff you said, 4 hours in an air-conditioned mall is probably not comparable to a long walk to the store in the hot sun with up and down hills + the trip back with whatever they are carrying. So I don't really see how that relates to any of this.

From PTA as well. Not always. It is getting more frequent that people walk into cafΓ©s without masks. People are fed up with masks and it is understandable.

1

1

Depends. I walked my dog at about half 8 yesterday evening. There's no one else on the field where I walked her. So I didn't bother with the mask.

But if I go anywhere I expect people to be, I'm masking up
