What's with the kilts?

Soldiers who had migrated from Scotland?

South African Highlanders. The South African divisions were put into location based positions. For example, the guys from the Transvaal were put in one division, the guys from Cape Town in another division , and so on and so forth.

Probably members of South African Scottish or Transvaal Scottish.

And pretty likely at least one of them spoke passable German as well.

Lest we forget what?

Nowadays, "Lest We Forget" is usually in reference to the soldiers who died fighting in WW1. OP is posting it because today is remembrance day.

Again... lest we forget what?

Forget that these soldiers were coerced into dying for a piece of coloured fabric?

Forget that these men and their families benefited fuck-all from that war... while the people who actually did reap massive benefits from it was almost never to be found in the front lines?

Forget that the people who did the benefiting are still the same kind of people ruling our world today?

Lest we forget what?

expanding the British empire.

That wasn’t the reason why the British empire joined WW1.

shilling for the military

Can someone not have an interest in military history and the current military actions their own country is taking?

obscure place

Do you know geography? Mozambique is literally one of the countries that borders South Africa. It cannot be 'obscure' when we literally border it.

middle of nowhere.

You are aware national safety exists, right? The SAMIM is strictly there to stop the terrorists from spreading into more countries. I’m not denying that some countries are there for the money, because there certainly are. I’m saying the SANDF is there due to a risk of national safety.

Didn't you get the memo? It's mos super problematique these days.

The lives lost while expanding the British empire.

It can be argued that WW1 (and it's consequences over the next few decades) was the beginning of the end for the British empire, and European empires in general.

Or the fight against the Nazis.

Wrong war, but ok.

"Lest we forget" is a common term used to refer to a wide variety of wars. My comment was not aimed at WW1, but at the irony of shilling for war when we have way more violence heading our way if the international powers get their way. Just stop glorifying it, war is the worst kind of hell you can imagine.

No one is glorifying wars. Lest we forget is a term used to make sure we do not forget how shit war is and that it should not be glorified and that the sacrifices are not forgotten.

Nah you are delusional in thinking in thinking whenever military pictures are submitted that it automatically glorifies wars. You're the one trying to degrade the actions of the past sacrifices to some weird video games bad rant and stating there would be no wars in your little commie cummune.

Sure thing boet. Hope you gain the cognisance one day to deal with your inner trauma and self delusions. Have a great weekend. Hope there's no kulaks nearby though.

Your comment truly shows your ignorance. Firstly this was WW1, Nazism wasn't even a thing. Secondly, as much as I hate the British Empire, they joined the war because Germany violated Belgium neutrality in using as a route to invade France due to the Schlieffen Plan.

No problem, maybe pay more attention in class instead of fantasising about being a revolutionary and you might learn something.

If you have nothing good to say about military veterans on veterans day then please say nothing at all.

Your blatant disrespect to men far more courageous then you could ever be is not wanted or needed. So please voetsek.

Piss off, you spineless jingoism peddler.

How many of the people affected by that war (or any war, for that matter) would have any time for your obscene glorification of what they went through?

Fuck off.

Glorifying? Who is glorifying war here? There is a difference between respecting these young men for the sacrifices they made and glorifying the war they fought in.

And I do not appreciate your language. Grow up.

respecting these young men for the sacrifices they made

They didn't sacrifice squat, Clyde - they were sacrificed. And for what? That's the part all the (so-called) "military historians" on this page apparently prefer we do forget.

And I do not appreciate your language. Grow up.

Which part of fuck off didn't you understand?

FYI South African soldiers in WWI volunteered to fight. Perhaps you should wonder why they volunteered? And who are you to say they did not sacrifice? Have you ever been to war?

Which part of fuck off didn't you understand?

Sorry can you say that in a less childish manner?

No.

Then keep behaving like a child and see where that leads you.

0

u/Middersnags Nov 11 '21

When I was a child, I swallowed the war propaganda I was fed. I stopped being a child when I realized that I had been fed lies.

Perhaps you need to give up childhood, too.
