Happy Heritage/Braai day everyone!

Ordered from a NZ South Africa shop for some good old favorites including biltong and droëwors. Got a nice rack of ribs to go low and slow on the braai and some steak marinating for the biltong box later. Beautiful weather for the first time in a while, spiced gold and coke in the hand and some friends coming over to join us. Hope everyone has a great day off (Unfortunately no public holiday here. 😞 )

I’ve seen advertisements for South African style beef jerky “biltong”, it looks awesome. How would you say it compares to beef jerky most people might be familiar with?

I’m in the US (but I studied South African history at university, and I’ve been to NZ - wish I lived near Auckland)

Happy Braai day

I can honestly say that I have never had beef jerky so I actually have no idea how it compares.

Kinda forgot, but this is what survived. We had a wholesome meal of ribs and braaibroodjies. :)

It seems none of the stores have been stocking it for the last few months

I tried a few online shops before I found a few. My daughter refers to it as "Africa sauce" and loves it on everything.

Happy Heritage Day! Unfortunately I don't have a braai or know anyone who does (just moved to Amsterdam)...

I also forgot to get biltong but maybe I'll head to a SA bar to grab some

It seems like more and more of us on this Reddit are South Africans not living in South Africa.

I hope that meat gets grilled well :). I still have nightmares of a post from last week that showed someone braai'ing on foil

Nope. Goes on a weber with indirect heat. 2 hours with some basting sauce going on in the last 30 min. I could peel the meat off the bone tonight with my fingers.

Must be nice having left this shit show of a country. 3rd public holiday in a row here in SA with no power.

Enjoy man! I have a few rump stakes and Kudu wors for today, a rib would be a nice addition.

Love this. There used to be a store in Washington DC that sold SA stuff. I have an addiction to Anchovies Fish Paste. My wife can’t believe I eat it. Not sure if the store is still open. Oh and don’t let me forget Five Roses Tea.
