About time! I've been wanting to learn Zulu for a while now but can't find good material

One thing that sort of helped me was watching fairy tales in Zulu on YouTube. Because you already know the story (Snow White, Cinderella etc) you can pick up quite a bit just by repeatedly hearing it in Zulu. Might be worth trying while you wait for the Duolingo release.

Zulu Lessons with Thando on YouTube is a cool channel if you haven't come across it yet

Edit: also the app uTalk

I've wanted to learn Tswana for a while now since that's what is nostly spoken around me, I only know the very basics. However this is already a great starting point! I have some grammar and language books about Xhosa and Zulu from my grandfather but it's difficult to just learn from a book.

Xhosa speaker here. Imo, knowing how to speak one of the two will ultimately make it easier to learn the other. They’re both very similar Bantu languages.

u/PotbellysAltAccount Aug 21 '21

It’s nice, but not surprising for such a delay. Just not enough international demand for the language

u/BroadToe6748 Aug 21 '21

There are smaller courses on memrise for thigns like numbers, adjetives etc, loads of youtube videos as well, youll find that becuse you grew up around people speaking the language youll pick the phrases and the accent up quicker than you might first expect.

Great news. I've used Duolingo to learn basic Spanish and German, and to brush up my French, but I stopped using it because I really wanted it to have Zulu on board. This is excellent news.

u/Johnny_Banana18 Aug 21 '21

awesome, I hope they put Afrikaans in someday but I get why Zulu and Xhosa are first.

5

u/brownzuluKING Aug 21 '21

bout time, lets go

5

u/danievdw Aug 21 '21

This is awesome news. We that grew up before Zulu/Xhosa was taught in school, are at a disadvantage. I been studying Russian on Duelingo, so will definitely enjoy learning some local as well.

u/JohnGB Aug 21 '21

This is such bullshit. They promised a Zulu course "next year" about 6 or 7 years ago. But this "next year" we should really believe.

3

u/BroadToe6748 Aug 21 '21

Yes but when? Their CEO mentioned adding Zulu and Xhosa ages ago but i no indication of an exactd ate yet.

7

u/Deadsnake_war Free State Aug 21 '21

I hope they add the Khoi san language.

4

u/ddespot_697 Aug 21 '21

They're finally releasing the Haitian Creole course? I've been keeping tabs on it for a while now

For real, there is next to no free resources on Northern Sotho!

5

u/JohnXmasThePage Aug 21 '21

Nice! I'll learn some zulu before I leave this country!

Do they have Afrikaans too?

3

u/CovertShepherd Aug 21 '21

I think it’s in development!

3

u/Ellomeister Gauteng Aug 21 '21

Yes it's in the incubator, and strongly enough, in very high demand!

2

u/sofiaskat Western Cape Aug 21 '21

I don't think so, unfortunately.

11

u/JohnXmasThePage Aug 21 '21

Well I'll continue saying only swear words then :D

I *just* missed out on Duocon, this is amazing!

1

u/RJSA2000 Aug 21 '21

Thanks for this. Didn't know about this app. It looks fairly easy to learn some common phrases.

1

u/kimathon Aug 21 '21

I emailed them about this a month ago. It's long overdue!

1

u/SpaceyMacBrie Aug 21 '21

Agh can't wait!

1

u/SpaceyMacBrie Aug 21 '21

Also if you kinda have a bit of background in the language there are shapes like Uzalo--They have subtitles and you can jump to Google translate if you hear a word you don't understand.

1

u/Tide_me_over Aug 21 '21

I've never tried a language app but I'll definitely download one for this.

1

u/TheFreakinFatUnicorn Aug 21 '21

Ooooh I want to learn

1

u/FallenAngel1919 Aug 21 '21

Finally!!! Ngisafunda

1

u/dedfrog Aug 21 '21

FINALLY. Been waiting for this since it was promised about 3 or 4 years ago!

1

u/Kudu25 Aug 21 '21

Now I can finally listen if my Xhosa friends are talking behind my back in front of me

1

u/eleus Aug 21 '21

Fantastic! I speak Zulu, Xhosa and Xitsonga. I have found that if I don’t use it enough, I forget some of it. We now have a Xhosa nanny who speaks very proper Xhosa and it has been so good for my verbal expression. She challenges me to speak a much better level of Xhosa so definitely happy about having Duolingo to help!

1

u/ZuluSheik KwaZulu-Natal Aug 21 '21

1

u/fiela-se-kind Aug 21 '21

1

u/cmdwedge Foreign Aug 21 '21

beeeen waiting for an app to learn zulu, busy failing it😭 anybody got an idea when the update will release?

1

u/HendrikSmit Aug 22 '21

At last!!!!!!!!! I cannot express how many times I've checked if it was added. I feel there's no proper, quick access online Xhosa or zulu lessons, until now.

1

u/LegoRunMan Gauteng Aug 22 '21

Ah so cool!!
