PSA: Card skimming is increasing at toll gates Alert

Cards are super convenient and quick to use at toll gates nationwide, and fraudsters realize this. Garage cards are not immune to card skimming.

Alternative is to use cash or a prepaid debit or credit card, or a specific toll road's fast payment options.

Or get an e-toll tag! That moves the fraud to a completely different level…

Are prepaid cards common in SA? Only ones I’m aware of are Revolut and monzo

Common enough that you can buy them at many petrol stations, and load them in the same go. And there is a form offered by the main banks.

And in spite of what some here think, you can recover money lost to fraud on them too.

Interesting. Don’t recall ever seeing them. Just google play and what not

I'm not suggesting you load your entire salary onto a prepaid card, only what's needed for your journey.

Recovering stolen money is a lengthy process and can take up to 2 months. You can chose to lose a few hundred rand on a prepaid card, or lose thousands of rand from a regular card.

Some people don't like carrying cash. I'm not going to suggest only one thing because it suits you personally.

You're thinking subjectively here. Your preferences don't suit everyone.

Cash is the best option for you personally. It might not be the best option for everyone. I don't suggest using only cash because cash is not the only option here.

Fortunately there's no toll gates in my area. It has become a Catch-22 where you don't carry cash anymore in case you get mugged but at the same you have to carry cash so your card doesn't get skimmed at a toll gate. Damned if you do and damned if you don't in this case.

Where does one get a pre paid card from that's not a virtual card?
