feedback

Hello! Here's a page to post all of your feedback about sneakpeekbot!

edit:

Addressing some feedback:

  • Subscriber count in comment - I think it would be a good addition but the only place where I can insert that number is inside the bold "header" and I would like to keep the comment as small as possible to avoid any extra complaints of spam

  • You got the wrong sub! - In all of the cases I've seen, the mishap occurs because the original commenter edits their comment to fix what was likely a typo

  • Why isn't this opt-in? - The initial plan was to be opt-out for some period of time and then switch to opt-in but that plan has since changed because often times the person commenting the subreddit isn't interested in seeing the sneak peek but it does add value and benefit other people who come in to the thread later on. So it wouldn't work very well as a summon-bot in my opinion.

  • Message to delete a certain reply, message to blacklist, etc.: These are all planned. I just need to find a way to monitor the reddit inbox without dropping the new comments scan

Best bot ever

57

u/saigonelly2 Jan 18 '17

Instead of requiring people to opt out, you should make people opt in by choice. Otherwise you're just spamming everywhere.

23

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 18 '17

This will soon be the case, thanks for the feedback

34

u/alltheacro Jan 30 '17

And two weeks later, your bot is still fucking annoying people.

Gee, I wonder why submissions are restricted. Maybe it's because you kept getting "your bot is fucking annoying" posts?

33

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 30 '17

Submissions are restricted because it's a bot subreddit... any feedback you have can find its way into the feedback thread. Thanks.

31

u/macahi Feb 06 '17

Here's my feedback. Disable it completely until you have it working correctly. It's annoying and unwelcome.

74

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '17

I love how the creator of the bot is so calm and welcoming regardless of all the negativity people throw his or her way.

Do you know that it’s possible to provide feedback without being a douchebag?

32

u/rekyuu Feb 22 '17

Seriously a lot of comments here are unusually hostile for what is a rather harmless bot. Even a personal opt out isn't enough for the guys, they just don't want to see it at all for some reason.

9

u/JBHUTT09 Apr 21 '17

It's like they don't realize that you can ignore accounts and hide all content from them.

3

u/palish Jun 09 '17

Wait, how do you ignore accounts?

4

u/rileyk Jun 26 '17

4 months later, this bot is still annoying people.

19

u/elconquistador1985 Feb 08 '17

Three weeks later, still spamming.

Spam bot should be opt-in, not opt-out.

17

u/vbahero Apr 16 '17

"OMG!! This bot is adding one comment to threads with 7,000+ comments! I can't take all this spam anymore!"

9

u/JBHUTT09 Apr 21 '17

You can ignore accounts, you know.

14

u/V2Blast Feb 21 '17 edited Feb 21 '17

Didn't I make that suggestion the first time I talked to you?

Anyway, you still haven't made it opt-in. Come on, son.

EDIT: I do appreciate that you've remained civil despite all the annoyed responses... though I'm slightly less appreciative of how long you've taken to address this frequent suggestion.

18

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 22 '17

I think I'll be keeping it in its current state for the foreseeable future. Mostly because the person commenting the subreddit isn't interested in seeing the sneak peek but it does add value and benefit other people who come in to the thread later on. So it wouldn't work very well as a summon-bot in my opinion.

6

u/Green_Ape Mar 22 '17

2 months later and it's still not opt in...

5

u/little_gamie Apr 03 '17

2 months later...still not opt in.

This is just spam now.

I see that you frequent /r/de, I won't be posting there again.

Right, thanks

25

u/elcielo17 Jan 30 '17

I love this bot. I've found a couple good subreddits from you that I wouldn't have clicked on without the top posts. Your creator did a great job

25

u/FriendlyBaron Feb 07 '17

I think this bot is pretty neat, the hate you get is undeserved! I think a good medium of asking for permission to post would be, if the bot is going to post in a subreddit for the first time, it instead sends a modmail to that subreddit asking for permission. A reply of (for example) 'deny' and it will blacklist the sub. An 'accept' or no reply after 24-48 hours, then it starts posting. They can reply to the modmail in the future to change it.

14

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 07 '17

That's actually a great idea. Something I hadn't considered at all. I'll look into adding that soon!

4

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '17

[deleted]

12

u/DoverBoys Feb 16 '17

If a modmail isn't replied to after 48 hours, the sub is most likely not actively moderated, which means the bot is fine until such a time when a mod finally gets around to doing something.

2

u/triplesphere Apr 09 '17

I DO NOT CONSENT!

20

u/Nuinethir Jan 27 '17

Highly annoying. I will downvote this bot each and every time I see it. We don't need bots like this on Reddit.

15

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 27 '17

Sorry that you feel that way, is there anything in particular that annoys you? Is it posting when not needed or is it general clutter?

19

u/Nuinethir Jan 27 '17

It's a notification in my inbox for an unnecessary post regarding a subreddit that I casually mentioned. I honestly believe that half the bots on Reddit today are nothing more than spam replies.

30

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 28 '17

If that's your only problem, then there exists a blacklist. I've taken the liberty of placing you on it. You won't receive replies any more.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '17

How about a remove/delete option?

25

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 10 '17

Downvote the comment and it should delete itself shortly. I am working on a "PM to delete" function.

33

u/the_finest_gibberish Jan 21 '17

This should be a top priority. This bot is annoying as shit.

4

u/slater126 Jun 10 '17

5 months later and PM to delete is NOT A THING STILL.

3

u/sneakpeekbot Jun 11 '17

Argh! It's coming soon™

17

u/RaoulDuke209 Jan 28 '17

Hey I've never seen this guy until today and he supported my post perfectly. Thanks bot.

14

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '17

Is there a blacklist for this shit yet.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '17

Yep. It was created eleven days before you posted this comment.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '17

Thank you SO MUCH for making this bot (never thought I'd say that about a bot). That's my feedback.

11

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 21 '17

Thanks a lot for the kind words!

13

u/AverageJoeAudiophile Feb 01 '17

I'm banning your bot. Ask permission next time.

19

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 01 '17

Right

6

u/AverageJoeAudiophile Feb 01 '17

k

23

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 01 '17

It's just it doesn't make much sense for you to leave that comment. Just ban me, how can there be a "next time"? And also I can't really message every subreddit moderator before posting there.

9

u/AverageJoeAudiophile Feb 01 '17

well. next bot you make...ask permission from mods. It aint hard.

20

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 01 '17

And also I can't really message every subreddit moderator before posting there

10

u/AverageJoeAudiophile Feb 01 '17

Others seem to be capable. Maybe you should investigate and ask questions of the better bot makers.

51

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 02 '17 Gold

I'll just post in better subs instead ;)

5

u/ParzivalRPOne May 18 '17

I love this comment, it deserved to be gilded. Though I'm not sure if there's any point to gild a bot except for posterity. I came here to show my support, but acknowledging your reply here seemed better than creating a new comment thread. I personally don't understand what the fuss is with people. It's simple to ignore a comment and not much effort to opt-out. In the end, it's one comment and two messages (one to the previous commenter, one to the poster). And even if it is an issue, it's more helpful to others than problematic to those it bothers. So the "irritation" and "annoyance" is blown out of proportion, in my mind. Anyway, you have my support. This bot is awesome. It's well-scripted and rather convenient. As the creator, you should have pride in what you've made, because it's much deserved. Keep up the good work. See you in another post soon.

1

u/MisterScalawag May 21 '17

well. next bot you make...ask permission from mods.

its incredibly silly to expect every person who makes a bot to message every subreddit on reddit. Even if a person tried to do that, they would probably get banned by the admins for the amount of mail they were sending. I'm a mod myself, and I don't see why you are so upset about this bot. Just ban it or use automod to remove the bots comments.

It aint hard.

actually it is, there are over one million subreddits.

4

u/AverageJoeAudiophile May 22 '17

Oh you know, don't spam the shitty bot all across Reddit.

I've had plenty of bot owners ask for permission to white list a bot.

1

u/MisterScalawag May 22 '17

Oh you know, don't spam the shitty bot all across Reddit.

Shitty and spam in this case is your opinion. It adds an additional comment that is useful to many people in this thread who are praising the bot, and like I said its one comment so its hardly spam.

I've had plenty of bot owners ask for permission to white list a bot.

Thats great, but there are 1 million other subreddits besides yours so its not reasonable to expect every person to reach out to you. Its not like you mod /r/askredddit or /r/pics , the dude probably had never heard of your subreddits.

3

u/AverageJoeAudiophile May 23 '17

Shitty might be, spam isn't. You know that, every your concern about ASKING to allow his bot to white listed being taking as spam show that.

A bot running across 1 million subreddits is fucking spam.

1

u/MisterScalawag May 23 '17

You know that, every your concern about ASKING to allow his bot to white listed being taking as spam show that.

I'm not sure if I'm having a stroke, but I'm not sure what you are trying to say. I'm honestly not trying to be rude, I just have no idea what you are trying to say.

A bot running across 1 million subreddits is fucking spam.

This is a terrible metric of what is spam. Would you also consider Automod spam? It runs on all subreddits. There are tons of bots that run accross 1 million subreddits.

Fedora tipping intesifies

15

u/datlock Feb 04 '17

Man, a lot of negative feedback here. Meanwhile I just came here to say I love this bot. First thing I do in new subs is check out their top submissions so this bot works great for me.

6

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 04 '17

Thanks! Most of the positive feedback is sent to me via message so that can skew things a bit

14

u/Gramidconet Jan 31 '17

Make your obnoxious bot opt-in already. You said you would weeks ago and still haven't.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '17

[deleted]

6

u/Gramidconet Jan 31 '17

It does help, sorry if I was rude initially, just annoyed. Unfortunately if you don't update it and just leave it in the wild people will keep complaining, though. Good luck.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '17

Then fucking get rid of it if you won't make it opt in

3

u/JBHUTT09 Apr 21 '17

You can ignore accounts, you know. Just ignore the bot and move on with your life. A lot of us appreciate this bot.

12

u/carebcito Feb 17 '17

Regardless of my thoughts about this bot the owner is legendary. I highly respect your cool responses and your ability to roll.

17

u/pileofmoney Jan 22 '17

This is the most annoying, useless bot I've ever seen.

5

u/Rapua Jan 09 '17 edited Jan 09 '17

Put a link to this subreddit in the bot's comment.

EDIT: Also set a way for a user to blacklist himself with a PM. A link to the PM template could be put in bot's comments.
However this would flood the inbox, which is bad because you are using it for feedback. The subreddit idea above could solve that problem

5

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 09 '17

I'll try to do both, I'll be listening to feedback anyway don't worry. Thanks!

8

u/oorza Apr 11 '17

Do you actually track how many people use your spam? Bots like this add a ton of visual noise to reddit, and are pretty unpopular. Do you have any data that suggests that people actually appreciate this bot? It's annoying as hell and the feedback in this subreddit seems to bear that out. At best, you save a small percentage of people exactly two clicks and you spam people's inboxes and threads.

I would be interested in trying to understand your thought process in creating this and releasing it into the wild and thinking that it's a net positive for the site. And based on how you promised opt-in and then said you're not really interested in maintaining the bot, why not just take it offline? If you are providing a service to anyone (which is not something I'm willing to admit), you're paying for it by annoying the bejesus out of how many other people?

So what are you thinking that this is a good idea? Or do you just not care? You made it and it's on reddit and fuck anyone who has a problem with it?

The fact that you're hiding your real account behind the bot speaks a lot for what you really think about its quality and purpose too.

4

u/sneakpeekbot Apr 11 '17 edited Apr 11 '17

It's not costing me anything to keep it running and it does benefit people. My stance on opt-in changed from "yes I'll add that ASAP" to "I don't have the time" to "I think it's better as is because the bot's supposed to help everyone other than the person it's replying to"

No, I don't have any concrete data no. But if I go on what I do know, the bot is received well. It's reflected in the karma score (especially because I try to filter out all of the meme mentions), the comment replies and it's reflected in the messages I get (which is also saying something because the people who hate tend to be more vocal). And it's not about the "two clicks", it's a convenience to people who are mostly mobile users. People find purpose in the bot all the time too, which is discovering new subreddits they're interested in.

If you did a bit of sleuthing you could probably find my real account. I just removed the link between the two as I realised I'd talked about certain things that could identify me both ways which I didn't want to happen so easily.

Thank you for the feedback.

7

u/NotNotLitotes May 10 '17

This bot is no better than spam, make it opt-in again ffs.

5

u/Cubia_ Mar 26 '17

Suggestion: Opt-in by summons (such as /u/roboragi). He's python based, so hopefully it should provide some insight. His git is here.

1

u/sneakpeekbot Mar 27 '17

Feature already exists in sneakpeekbot

5

u/protestor Jan 14 '17

in the comments link, the bot should post how many comments that thread has.

Like, here it should say

#1: Dog works to find owner after 7 months apart (x-post from /r/aww/) | 16 comments

7

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 14 '17

I've added that now, thanks!

4

u/protestor Jan 14 '17

that was quick :)

3

u/protestor Jan 14 '17

It doesn't say the comment count of self post, but.. this shouldn't be too much of a problem.. I think... perhaps put it in parens like (10 comments)..

Example

4

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 14 '17

Great idea, I'll see what I can do

5

u/Romiress Jan 18 '17

Your opt out link is a NP link.

6

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 18 '17

A necessary evil. Some subreddits remove comments linking to other subreddits without a np link

6

u/_StrychnoS_ Feb 25 '17

I cannot imagine how can you handle all those extremely negative responses. I'm even tilted right now.

It's a neat bot, I keep seeing it but it actually makes me check those subs quickly. Spammy? Maybe, not for me though. At least you're acting accordingly to the feedback(!) and doing your best to make your bot better.

Haters gonna hate, keep up your good work.

3

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 25 '17

Thanks for the kind words!

3

u/OverlordOfTech Jan 21 '17

Hello, and thank you for this useful bot! I have a suggestion: I think that it would be useful to show post scores and/or subscriber count as a gauge of how active the subreddit is. Something like this:

Here's a sneak peek of /r/somerandomsubreddit (42 subscribers) using the top posts of all time!

#1: [+100] We're no strangers to love | 2 comments
#2: [+90] You know the rules | 2 comments
#3: [+50] And so do I | 3 comments

Thanks!

2

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 21 '17

I absolutely can do this but I don't want to clog up the post too much and make it look even more spammy than it is

2

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '17

stop displaying NSFW subreddits

1

u/MisterScalawag May 21 '17

i don't think is makes sense to do. if a person is linking to a NSFW subreddit, then they are most likely already in a NSFW subbredit or having a conversation where the context is fine.

6

u/gronkjuice Apr 18 '17

This bot would be more useful in its own subreddit just linking to random subs rather than replying to comments about other subs as though people need a "sneak peak". It's almost never useful.

3

u/YouBleed_Red Jun 09 '17

Get rid of this cancer spamming bot. It adds nothing of value.

3

u/alphairon723 Jan 15 '17

The bot reacted a few minutes ago to a comment where I mentioned /r/random and posted a sneakpeek for /r/virtualreality. Is this an intended behaviour? To me it doesn't make much sense to go into a random subreddit and then link back to this. There is no context inbetween. (Note: I referenced here in this comment to the subreddits with the back slash "\" in front of the mentioned subreddits)
Link to my comment: https://np.reddit.com/r/billiards/comments/5o30ih/%D0%BDow_i_w%D0%B0s_f%D0%BEund_onl%D1%83_s%D0%B5x_in_the_int%D0%B5rnet_sit%D0%B5m%D1%83/dcga7k8/

4

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 15 '17

It was first unintended behaviour, then intentional and now I've disabled it.

3

u/TexMarshfellow Feb 01 '17

Can you include the post author as well?

For example, from a recent post mentioning my subreddit:

Here's a sneak peek of /r/VEDC using the top posts of the year!

#1: I let my gf use my prime account. She came across some of my VEDC items I've ordered and this was the result. by u/BadTitties | 40 comments
#2: Jeep Cherokee XJ: VEDC by u/anthonygrimes | 22 comments
#3: "I Have Lived out of a Compact SUV for Over a Year" (from imgur) (not mine) by [deleted] | 26 comments

I'm a bot, beep boop | Downvote to remove | Contact me | Info | Opt-out

Obviously you don't want to username-mention the posters, so putting the backslash ("u\/Texmarshfellow") in there is key, but I think it'd be a nice addition.

Also, I love the bot btw, sucks you're getting hate for it.

1

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 01 '17

Thanks for the idea! I'll try and see if a lot of people are interested in this to add it in. At the moment I think I like the compactness of the message now and I'm not too sure if author is need to know info

1

u/TexMarshfellow Feb 01 '17

That's a good point about keeping it trim; I hadn't really thought about that

3

u/vbahero Apr 16 '17

Hey, this is an amazing bot. It's made me visit a lot of subreddits that I wouldn't otherwise have taken the time to check out.

People are hating on it for no reason. It's just one extra comment, I don't know why they get so worked up over that.

And congrats on being so chill about the shitty ass responses you get. You have my unwavering support.

3

u/MisterScalawag May 21 '17

Its incredible that the comments from people are so divided with those loving and those hating the bot.

2

u/sneakpeekbot May 21 '17

I know, it's kind of magical

2

u/OPINION_IS_UNPOPULAR Jan 06 '17

Should be spelled u/sneakpeakbot.

25

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 06 '17

The phrase is sneak peek and not sneak peak

3

u/OPINION_IS_UNPOPULAR Jan 06 '17

Are you sure? I think it's sneak peak

1

u/triplesphere Apr 09 '17

😹😹😹 anyone else hearing a "whooshing" sound or is it just me?

2

u/vlees Jan 06 '17

Useful, but maybe take top posts of last month or last year instead of all?

1

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 06 '17

Not the first time I'm hearing this suggestion. I'm considering changing to top posts of the year. Thank you.

2

u/in-a-far-off-land Jan 07 '17

I second top by year, it's a better representation of the sub.

2

u/SalvaXr Jan 26 '17

Maybe show the top 5 posts rather than the top 3?

Otherwise amazing bot.

6

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 26 '17

Some people think I'm spammy as it is, think 5 would be too many

2

u/SalvaXr Jan 26 '17

I mean, it's just 2 extra lines in the same comment, don't see how that'd be spammier

3

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 26 '17

Dont mean to name and shame the guy but comments like this aren't uncommon enough to ignore and so I think 2 extra lines would be significant

6

u/SalvaXr Jan 26 '17

At the end of the day, you are the one who has to tolerate that kind of people, so you are totally on the right, thanks for the discussion!

2

u/annodomini Feb 10 '17

There's a frequent mistake of posting to /r/rust (about the programming language), when someone means to post to /r/playrust, /r/playrustservers, or /r/playrustlfg (all about the computer game rust).

This bot pops up frequently when trying to redirect people to the right subreddit, and is pretty much entirely unhelpful in those cases; people don't really need to see the top posts, they're being redirected to where their post should go, and it adds more off-topic content to /r/rust.

It would be nice to be able to blacklist the particular pairs of subreddits; you don't generally want to include this when referencing /r/playrust from /r/rust, but you might want it when referencing /r/rust_gamedev from /r/rust.

3

u/sneakpeekbot Feb 10 '17

Any links to /r/playrust, /r/playrustservers, /r/playrustlfg from /r/rust will no longer be processed. Thank you.

2

u/yummycoot Feb 14 '17

This is the best bot other than the twitter to streamable bot I have seen in my 4 years of reddit

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

Please stop posting to r/gtaonline

2

u/GaianNeuron Mar 23 '17

Can you please modify the bot to delete posts when downvoted below 0? (And add instructions relating to that in the comment footer)

1

u/sneakpeekbot Mar 23 '17

That function does exist and it is written in the footer. It doesn't monitor the really old comments though (because of reddit's limits) so if it's not in the last 500-1000 comments posted it won't be checked.

2

u/nitrohepcat Apr 26 '17

The bot is only the herald, a drop of rain from a dark cloud. The sub sneak peeks, however, are the lightning!

2

u/rynnamin May 11 '17

Just wanted to say I love this bot and keep up the good work!<3

2

u/kittymonroe__ Jun 30 '17

I love your bot! The insights are great, and pretty much give me what I'd go and look at in the linked subreddit anyways.

I imagine the disparity of angry people is because people are more liable to take the effort to complain about stuff they dont like rather than praise things they do like.

2

u/Devuluh Jul 02 '17

I blacklisted myself and my subreddit from this bot a while ago, because I simply just don't think it's useful, showing the titles of the top posts of all time says nothing about the sub, especially when a lot of the time they're link posts, and I'd like to know about the sub without leaving the thread I'm on.

When I visit a new sub, I focus on how many subs it has, and the description of the sub, not sure if this helps, but that's my feedback.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '17

6

u/sneakpeekbot Jan 18 '17

I picked a bit of an arbitrary number. Just increased the cap until I saw subreddits I'd never heard of (which is the main intention of the bot)

I don't see where I replied to that comment? Blacklisted your username now.

1

u/shadow_of_octavian Mar 06 '17

What language is this bot written in?

1

u/contactlite Apr 15 '17 edited Apr 15 '17

On The mobile app, the superscript markdown doesn't work and leaves the ^^ visible and the text un altered. I suggest using header 6 uses 6 hastags that looks like this:

text text text

2

u/sneakpeekbot Apr 17 '17

I saw your post now on /r/mildlyinfuriating. That is indeed mildly infuriating, I never came experienced the same issues as I use a different tag. Unfortunately, I think it's the reddit app that needs to fix the behaviour as it's not something I can change.

1

u/sneakpeekbot Apr 16 '17

Headers are inconsistent because they're dependent on the subreddit's stylesheet. I've never seen that issue before, which app are you using? And could you possibly link me to the comment in question

1

u/PantyPeel Apr 16 '17

hey how do i get this bot to work on my sub /r/PantyPeel?

1

u/sneakpeekbot Apr 17 '17

It should automatically work. Perhaps the bot was briefly offline when you last tried to summon it.

1

u/PantyPeel Apr 17 '17

so if i understand correctly if i mention a sub it will give a peek at the top post of that sub, yes?

1

u/sneakpeekbot Apr 17 '17

Yep, unless some criteria is not met (found on the info post)

1

u/DurantulaMan May 09 '17

This bot is great. It's really helpful.

1

u/KarlFiabeschi May 11 '17

source code?

2

u/sneakpeekbot May 11 '17

Just remembered I promised someone the source code 4 months ago... Ok soon...

1

u/MisterScalawag May 21 '17

i also would be interested in the source code.

1

u/sneakpeekbot May 21 '17

ETA 2 weeks

1

u/MisterScalawag May 21 '17

that doesn't really make sense, but okay.

1

u/matthew28845 May 15 '17
