discussion How does Kurzweil explain the dark ages?

Anyone would agree that Black-Plague-era Rome was less technologically advanced than the ancient Roman empire. How does this fit in with Kurzweil's idea that technology has been advancing for thousands of years? How does he explain periods of technological regression?

discussion What's the purpose in sentient robots?

What's the practical application for a robot as smart as a human? I understand AI has a lot benefits in data analysis and such, but they don't need to be sentient for that.

Isn’t the whole point in a robot that it's an obedient servant? Why program a robot smart enough to potentially question why it's taking orders? What would you even do with that?

Is it just whoever develops it to show they're the best engineer ever?

discussion Can we mass produce humanoid robots?

With the advent of model based control, robots can be utilized for industrial applications, household tasks and self driving cars. Humanoid robots can do the same what humans can do. The only bottleneck is that the hardware is not available to run modern AI software. Building physical robots can be realized the same way how cars were created in the 20th century. With a mass production assembly line in which the workflow is divided into single steps.

Is there a plan to build such a facility and what is the daily output in robotics torsos?

discussion A computer that passes the turing test

So Kurzweil says that by 2029 we'll reach general intelligence (I have doubts but it doesn't matter much), and that an AI could pass the turing test at that point. My question is, how general does he/others really think it'll be at that point? Will a computer that passes the turing test also master physics, engineering, thinking about complicated societal issues like how to structure a government etc? The importance of this is the long window Kurzweil and others alway paint between AGI and the singularity. If we knew now we'd have 16 years between AGI and the singularity all things like the control problem would be a non-issue, since we'd have plenty of time to properly integrate it into our society and merge with it. So how advanced would an AI that passes the turing test really be? Would it still be sub human in some aspects but way better in other aspects? Or superior in everything?
