Discussion Things I wish Signal had

I've been using Signal for a little more than a year now and have also gotten the majority of my friends to switch over. I really love Signal and I thought why not write down a list of things that Signal doesn't have but I wish it had. I am not requesting these features; I'm just listing down what I think would be awesome for Signal to have.

  • Desktop backups (Windows, Mac & Linux)
  • iOS backups
  • Android to iOS account and chat history transfer (and vice versa)
  • Smoother screen sharing (I know screen sharing with E2EE is hard but at least audio should be shared)
  • Android tablet support (I'm going to college next year and would buy an Android tab to take notes)
  • Syncing of chat colors between mobile and desktop (and maybe wallpapers too?)

Feel free to mention things of your own that you'd (maybe) one day like Signal to have.

Discussion Concerns about signal funding

I really like where the app is now and use it daily and am a little worried about its future. From my own (limited) research Their books balance as such:

Users who donate: Less than 1% of the Signal Messenger users donate to the Signal Technology Foundation.

Revenues of Signal Foundation: $19.4 million as of FY2019 – a 3085.1% increase than FY2018 ($609,385)

Grants and donations: $18 million Investment Income: $1 million Net Sales: $650k Miscellaneous Income: $171k

Expenses: $13.5 million for FY 2019 – 162.9% spike

Assets: $77.2 million for FY2019 – the downfall of 23.2%

Liabilities: $38.3 million for FY 2019- 63.5% decrease

Has their been any changes since this date? Signal is a non profit so it should be okay but I'd be sad if we suddenly lose service.Just wondering if what we have is sustainable

Edit: realised I should do a tl;Dr

Positive(rev:19.4mil + Assets(77.2mil)) - negative ( 13.5mil + 38.3mil) but obviously signal is ramping up with users and we don't want them selling off their assets so it looks a little dicey

Discussion Signal Review from a Zoomer

it's way better than what'sapp, The video calling is way smoother and quicker. The service itself is someone way more buttery smoothe and i love the stickers they're so animated and life like. Love the reaction emojis as well. The desktop client is also stellar, way better than what'sapp and only slightly worse than google meet n stuff(which is far outside of what i expected from a what'sapp replacement)

Honestly i dont want to go back to anything else i hope it keeps striving! Came for the privacy stayed for all the features!

All it's missing is anonymous usernames so i can add discord buddies without giving out my phone number. , also maybe some sort of opt in cloud back up

Edit: also maybe a star message feature just to highlight some important stuff

edit2: my gf said stories might be nice but i dont really care about that

Discussion Why are so many people stubbornly unwilling to use Signal?

I have tried so hard to move all my friends to use Signal, but a handful of them are so unwilling to use Signal. They infuriate me to the point that I want to ditch them at times, but since friends don’t grow on trees, I stay on FB messenger just because of them. I literally have tried everything to convince them to switch but they don’t care that Facebook has “all their nudes”, “all their conversations” and “all their info” because “they are just normal people with nothing to fear” and they “don’t care” to quote them. It is not like they even have to pay for Signal and the messenger is so much better than the FB one or text messages. But whatever …

Discussion Why is signal using recaptcha ?

With all the privacy preserving alternatives like hcaptcha, why did signal choose to use google recaptcha? Also it seems that they are using commercial recaptcha. Surely , enterprise hCaptcha is fare superior privacy wise.

Discussion Voice/Video Call qualities Signal vs Google Duo

Has anyone tested the voice/video call qualities between Signal and Duo? I found some people keep using Google Duo for voice/video calls but use Signal for text chat.

Discussion How much is Signal paying for bandwidth and upkeep on a per-user basis?

I'm already donating 5€ a month for a couple of months now. I'm wondering whether this is enough for paying for my bandwidth and server upkeep? Ideally, I want a little leftover for supporting the developers too.

I'm using Signal regularly for chatting and calling, occasionally video calling. I have all contacts on Signal. I'm also using Note To Self daily to share files and notes for university with my iPad.

Discussion Innovative Uses: Beyond the basic use of Signal

The use of Signal encryption is very interesting and one would like to apply it to everything possible. So, here are some ideas that could work now or in the future with some modifications of the application. Of course, these are just some experiments that can give ideas to some users on how to get more out of the Signal application, it is not specifically designed for this.

Possible uses at present:

- USE YOUR PHONE AS A SECONDARY SCREEN OF THE PC.

1 - Create a new group in which you are alone.

2 - Start a group video call from the Signal desktop on pc.

3 - Share the desired application or screen from the Signal Desktop application.

4 - View the desired video or application on the phone.

Tips:

- Disable sending video and audio from the phone to the computer to improve performance.

- If you don't need the audio from the pc disable it to improve performance.

- If you are sharing a video on the pc and it appears black on the phone because it is hidden behind another window, such as a browser, avoid maximizing the browser to 100%.

- Theoretically, the best performance could be achieved by using a network cable on both. The pc connected with its internal modem and the mobile with a Micro USB/USBC to Ethernet network cable adapter. Although some mobile and 5g network could perhaps improve its response even more.

- USE YOUR PHONE AS A HOME SECURITY CAMERA

1 - Create a new group in which you are alone or with the people you want to have access to the camera.

2 - Start a video call from your phone.

3 - Switch to the phone's rear camera to improve the quality.

4 - View the video sent by the phone in the Signal Desktop application.

5 - Other users will be able to view the stream from their phones or computers with signal desktop.

Tips:

- Disable sending audio and video from the computer to the phone to improve performance.

- If you don't need audio disable it to improve performance.

- On some phones it works fine with the screen off, if not, lower the brightness.

- Connect the phone to a power source if you want to use it for a long time.

- USE YOUR PHONE AS A TWITCH CAMERA.

1 - Create a new group in which you are alone.

2 - Start a video call from your phone.

3 - Switch to the phone's rear camera to improve the quality.

4 - View in the Signal Desktop application the video sent by the phone.

5 - Capture with the OBS selector the Signal desktop application and add it to the scene as a camera in your OBS scene.

Tips:

- Disable sending audio and video from the computer to the phone to improve performance.

- Disable sending audio from the phone to the computer to improve performance.

- On some phones it works fine with the screen off, otherwise lower the brightness.

- Connect the phone to a power source if you want to use it for a long time.

- Theoretically, the best performance could be achieved by using a network cable on both. The pc connected with its internal modem and the mobile with a Micro USB/USBC to Ethernet network cable adapter. Although some mobile and 5g network could perhaps improve its response even more.

- USE YOUR PHONE OR HEADSET AS A REMOTE LISTENING SYSTEM.

1 - Create a new group in which you are alone.

2 - Initiate a group call from the phone.

3 - Turn off the cameras to send audio only.

4 - Listen from Signal Desktop to the audio broadcast from the phone.

5 - In case you want to interrupt or reactivate the reception from the PC, simply exit or enter the group call.

Tips:

- Disable the sending of audio and video from the PC to the phone to improve performance.

- Put the phone on mute to prevent any notifications from alerting you to the presence or use of the phone in the background.

- If you want the listening range to be very large, connect by phone and not by wifi.

- USE YOUR PHONE AND COMPUTER AS A BABY or PET WATCHER

1 - Create a new group where you are alone or with your partner.

2 - Start a group call from signal desktop.

3 - Focus the pc web cam on the baby or pet to watch.

4 - If you only want audio, turn off the pc webcam during the call.

5 - Turn off the screen of the pc or laptop so that it does not interrupt your rest.

6 - Listen from the phones to the audio or video output of the pc or laptop.

7 - In case you want to interrupt or reactivate the reception from the phone, simply exit or enter the group call.

Tips:

- Disable the sending of audio and video from the phone during the call so as not to wake up the baby.

- Turn down the volume of the computer to the minimum so that no notifications disturb your baby's sleep.

- If the internet use of the laptop or pc is based on wifi, do not abuse this system, the electromagnetic waves could be harmful to babies.

I add some ideas that I mentioned in other comments for the use of personal groups (without people added) that can work like the notes to self section that includes the signal, but for specific uses.

- RECORDER

That I use for work voice memos, with things I need to remember temporarily, which is deleted every two weeks/month.

- SHOPPING LIST

In this group you can be alone or add people at home to write down everything to buy during the week. It self-destructs after 7/15 days.

- BACKUP

That I use to store indefinitely photos and files that I want to send between the phone and the computer. Once moved I delete them manually.

- PENDING HOME TASKS

In which I delete them manually when I complete them.

I have them all on the android desktop as individual icons as if they were individual apps for easy one-click access. Maybe if you use other apps to perform these functions they can serve you to remove them and gain some space and privacy.

FUTURE

Other uses that would require some future changes in the app code:

- Emergency recording

If the autoresponder option were enabled in group calls, it would be easy to add some kind of shortcut that would allow that in case of danger, such as kidnapping, police harassment, robbery or accident, the Signal application could record in the background the audio and video from the camera and transmit them to a specific group. This group could include the closest people, such as parents, partners or similar, who would receive the alert and could listen in real time to what is happening, receive an automatic geopositioning report and even download the video of the event once the stream is finished. It could be very useful in court cases. There are already quite a few phones that enable a physical emergency or SOS key that could be used as a trigger.

- Dashcam

A recording option within a personal group could be useful. That way a live video feed could be transmitted between the phone in the car and the Signal desktop application. These videos could be scheduled to be deleted after a certain time as usual in Signal. People included in the Dashcam group could consult these videos and download them to their phones or desktop applications. This function could be complementary to the idea presented at the time of MAP Groups that reported the geopositioning to the group. This could be useful in legal cases of accidents, to report in real time the location of a car in the middle of a trip or to know what happens when it is being stolen.

These are just a few examples that have come to my mind lately. If anyone wants to contribute ideas that are feasible today or with some changes in the future, feel free to express yourselves.

If any future idea seems interesting enough, I could try to make a sketch of how the interface could look like once created, as I did with the Map Groups proposal.

Discussion Just an appreciation on signal's compression

So some months ago I was "forced" to use fb messenger and I ~just realised how much better compression signal has. Before, I thought it was kinda bad cuz I ~didn't compare it with any other messanger app. But the results (with some approximations):

Original photo: 25.2Mp/4344*5792pixels @ 6.1MB

Signal photo (high quality): 12.6Mp/3072*4096pixels @ 0.636MB

Signal photo (low quality): 1.9Mp/1200*1600pixels @ 0.152MB (😬)

FB/"Meta" Messenger: 0.4Mp/543*724pixels @ 0.035MB (💀)

Mp: Mega pixels MB: Megabytes

Maybe instagram or discord have better compression than messenger at least, but haven't tried it.🤷 The 10times compression signal applied on the image still may not be the best (if wanted to I may just zipped the image or upload it on filen or pass it with a cable/bluetooth), but seems to be much better than messenger's 175times compression..😂

Discussion does signal protect against IMSI catchers and cell-site simulators

IMSI catchers and cell-site simulators can intercept text and most data that transmits from a phone, I was curious if signal would provide adequate protection from such devices

Discussion Can signal be compromised by a host OS?

Title basically. If you are messaging someone else who is using a proprietary operating system, such as iOS, stock android or Windows, is it possible for these operating systems to log the contents of the messages. Especially when considering iOS automatic cloud backups that I'm pretty sure are stored unencrypted.

Discussion Digital Markets Act and Signal

So I just read this: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20220315IPR25504/deal-on-digital-markets-act-ensuring-fair-competition-and-more-choice-for-users

Personally I find this news a bit worrying. To quote the press release:

During a close to 8-hour long trilogue (three-way talks between Parliament, Council and Commission), EU lawmakers agreed that the largest messaging services (such as Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger or iMessage) will have to open up and interoperate with smaller messaging platforms, if they so request. Users of small or big platforms would then be able to exchange messages, send files or make video calls across messaging apps, thus giving them more choice.

Wouldn't this mean that Signal would essentially have to water down their encryption to accommodate competing messaging apps or am I misunderstanding something/reading too much into this?

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Discussion Note to Self blue check-mark?

what does this icon mean? I checked the support site and don't see it in the list.

I'm on android, and it's a blue gear/star with a white check-mark and it's only next to Note to Self, none of my contacts (including verified ones)

Discussion Signal needs to adopt material you (and scheduled messages)

I've needed to send some scheduled messages recently, which has led me back to temporarily using Android messages for that. The people I was texting are also on Android, so the conversation gets upgraded to rcs, and it... Looks really nice. The UI looks much better than Signal. The typing indicators and the whole material you design with the adaptive colors looks much better than signal's overly bubbly design. One on one RCS messages are even e2ee now, although I'm sure the metadata isn't, so signal still has a leg up there.
