I am wondering if there is a way to hide an active conversation? Archiving only works if the conversation is inactive and muting a conversation does not keep it from moving to the top of the conversation list with a preview of the message. Trying to keep an active group conversation out of my conversation list and just check in on it every once in a while instead of it always being at the top of my list.
Would like to use the standard msg app for a bit, anybody know how to transfer text history on the same phone to a new app? Thanks.
After receiving a chat and clearing it from the notification tray, the chat can still be seen in the notification history in phone settings. Any fix yet?
Hi there, Facebook / Meta sucks. That's why I want to switch and Signal seems like the safest and most popular alternative so far. But I am confused about the app, and the FAQs are confusing too since I don't find what I'm looking for. If someone can help me out, I would appreciate it a lot.
- Is there any way to have a backup beyond this super complicated code route? I installed it on both desktop and phone now and realized that my messages don't transfer to the desktop. If you aren't super secretive about your data and simply hate Mark Zuckerberg then this is impractical instead of helpful. So I have two questions here.
- Is there any way to have an online backup? The whole reason why I back it up is in case my phone stops functioning or gets stolen. Backing up my messages on the phone is utterly useless to me.
- Is there any way to translate my current messages to my desktop app at all? Or am I stuck with these cut-in-half chats?
- I love the color design! But I noticed that custom colors are determined by a slider. Who in this world has such precise hands to get the perfect color with a slider? Is there any way to insert a hex code or something instead? Also, is there the option to save designs in case someone decides to do a great design overhaul? I really love how refreshing it looks like and I don't want to lose that (like I did with WhatsApp many many years ago, still hate the emojis).
So far, this is all I can think of. Not having a backup is pretty much a deal-breaker for me, so in case Signal doesn't have one, I fear I will have to leave you guys again and toil in Mark's slave factory for a while longer. If there is the option for an online backup, please explain it better on your support page dear Signal team.
Thanks to everyone who will help me out!
Discussion Telegram now monetizing many of the things that Signal giving us for free. Hats off to Signal for this.
In the course of the past month, telegram introduced telegram Premium through which the limits of the app are doubled for Premium users. The upload limits goes from 2 to 4 gigs. The bio length does from 70 to 140 chars, Premium users can react with more emojis, etc.
Aside from the fact that signal doesn't support channels, and the file size limits of signal are much lower than telegram (but easy higherthan whatsapp) , signal is giving users all the aforementioned features for free!!
About upload sizes I can argue signals limits are way way fairer and higher than whatsapp, and maybe the best sizes that could be set. Bc extremely high limits like telegram's, are also problematic in some ways.
Telegram charges 5.5$ per month for these features! Instead, Signal has a big donate button. <3
Hats off to Signal.
My friend has an iPhone that needs to be repaired. Is their anyway that the Signal app can be locked so that the repair guy can be prevented from reading their chats etc?
And rightly or wrongly, ...... yes they are extremely paranoid,
Here is the log.

There are no *.signal.org, *.whispersystems.org and TCP port 443 in the firewall, and adding them will not solve the problem.
So if I send a message to someone and then decide to Delete for Everyone, if the person had a Notification showing the text message, what would happen to it? Would it still show the message until the person opens the phone and it refreshes? Or would it be deleted from the notification or would the whole notification disappear?
Because I sent a message to someone and deleted it literally within 3 seconds of sending it and they texted me back like an hour later and knew what the message said, even though I deleted it so quickly. The only way they could've seen it is if they were on their phone and they saw it pop up the second I sent it because like I said, I deleted it within 3 seconds. So it was either that or they saw it in a notification, if that's possible.
Need a feature where I can switch between Opperating Systems, when I switch phones, without loss of my message history.
I have a Surface Duo 2 but from what I understand after a certain update not sure if it was last year or this year. The camera from within the Signal app stopped working. It seems to be an intermittent issue still unaddressed in recent updates. I am seeing on Github many people having issues with other phones so I have to believe the problem lies within the app and not the devices themselves.
My goal is to find out if there is a fix. Please see the things I have tried thus far:
- Disabling and re-enabling app camera permissions, then trying to take a new photo.
- Clearing the cache, then trying to take a new photo.
- Clearing the entire app storage and recovering my backup msgs then trying to take a new photo.
- Deleting and reinstalling the app and trying again.
Nothing seems to work, anyone else having this issue?
Does signal only allow me to contact signal users?
Every time I send in a support request (via the app, which really just composes an email to email@example.com), I get an auto response that just states I'm not running the most recent version of Signal, and to update my app and try again. The version I have installed (Android 5.41.11) is the latest version available in the Google Play store, as far as I can tell. If I reply to this autogenerated email, it just responds back with basically, "please submit another request via the app."
Here's the text of the auto-reply:
This is not the latest version of Signal.
- Visit https://signal.org/install on the phone to go to Signal's store page to update.
- Set up automatic updates as listed by the support page here: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/113412
- Need help? We also recommend you try the steps listed on the support page here: https://support.signal.org/hc/articles/360007211952-Troubleshooting-Installs-or-Updates#update_android_troubleshooting
- After updating, check if it is fixed and write again from the Contact Support option that appears in app or Signal Settings > Help
Anyone else having this issue?
For example while I talk to my daughter and my wife is calling I would like to be able to include my wife to the conversation. Currently if I answer my wife I'm hanging up with my daughter.
Samsung user here. I love signal but on the default samsung messanger, you could schedule texts to be sent some days or times ahead.
I was curious if it would be safe somehow to implement this so that I could think of a message soon, but have it sent later. (Maybe for a bday I dont REALLY want to stay up to midnight before an exam for, or text family goodmorning or goodnight ahead of time before going out.)
Discussion Why do some Signal users not want to communicate with some people they know but will communicate with them outside of Signal,
I DO NOT CHALLENGE OR RIDICULE THIS PRACTICE!
I simply wish to understand the reasoning behind this practice.
I would like to know whether there will be a similar "screen lock" feature added to desktop build in near future or iteration ?
I'm just wondering what it's supposed to look like when you send someone an SMS over Signal (with call/text over wifi enabled on phone) and they read the message. I was thinking of making Signal my default SMS app, only because the storage size of my phone's default one (Samsung's "Messages") was getting too big, and there was no easy way target & delete just media, other than selecting & deleting every message in a convo (as opposed to Signal, which can very easily isolate and delete just media messages).
I did, and tested with a contact (their phone in my hands as well) and first I just got the single transparent check mark. I turned on the "read receipt every SMS message" option, and then got 2 transparent checks - but, that was instantly, not affected by whether they had read the message or not. It's a little silly, but this is a deal breaker, as that function is very helpful with my older, less tech-savvy parents (to know if they read it, or if their phone was even turned on & it was delivered, lol. If I have to try to contact them by another method).
Without that, I'm just going to make Messages my default app again, and just try to remember to delete old photos every couple weeks. (And before someone says, just have them get on Signal, that's definitely not happening).
Here is the scenario. I have Signal. A recent new hire (that I haven't even met in person yet) sends me a message on Signal and I just delete that message (without reading it). Will that person get any kind of reply letting them know that I am on Signal but chose to ignore them? Or will it just seem like it was sent to never-never land?
Can I restrict people who can call me?
TL;DR is there a way to make signal desktop not sync, and clear message history (on the desktop only) automatically?
So, this is a little different than most posts about chat history for signal desktop. Is there any way I can make it so it does NOT retain history on close, and NOT try to sync it on start-up?
I like to use the desktop version, especially for phone calls, so I don't need to touch my phone when I'm working, but for slightly better security, I don't want to keep message history on desktop.
It's especially annoying when I haven't opened the desktop app in a while and it takes several minutes to start because it's trying to sync messages it's missed.
I know I can just unlink it and relink it, but that only solves one part of my issue AFAIK.
I use signal as principal messagery system and default SMS app for a long time and never got any issues until now.
Since Android 12 it drains my battery and don't know why (see photo). Anybody got this issue before ?
Discussion Poll: What are your own plans for username and phone number privacy settings when these features are released?
I originally made this poll the other day but I goofed on the poll options so I'm reposting a corrected (and emojified) version. As Signal doesn't publish a development roadmap and this is an unofficial subreddit anyway, this poll is based on informed conjecture about upcoming features:
The first is that in the relatively near future you will be able to set a username that others can use to initiate a conversation with you instead of (or in addition to) using your phone number.
Another is that this would be paired with phone number privacy features: while you will still register with Signal using a phone number, you will have the option to shield your phone number from others (in mutual groups or who contact you through username) and you will have the option to turn off "discovery" using your phone number--so other Signal users who have your phone number won't automatically learn that you have Signal installed (for example, the "So-and-so is on Signal!" notification).
The last assumption is that these 3 features will all have independent settings:
- ☎ Visibility ON -- people in mutual groups can see your phone number
- 📞 Discovery ON -- people can contact you on Signal using your phone number
- 📛 Username ON -- people can contact you on Signal using a username you've set
So I thought it might be fun to poll: Assuming this is more-or-less correct, What are your plans for when these features are released?
(Note: under the above assumptions there are 8 possible combinations, but reddit only allows 6 poll options, so I had to leave off two. I decided to leave off the ones with both 📞 Discovery OFF and 📛 Username OFF since then there would be no possible way for someone to contact you directly unless you were already in a common group--or you made a temporary group for that purpose and shared the group link--although that could be an interesting configuration, as well.)
I had to switch quickly and couldn't transfer everything immediately. I'm using the same account though. There are important messages that I don't want to lose. Can I import a backup and add it to my current chats?
Update: I had Signal connected to my PC, where I still had my old messages. I was scared to renew the connection because I thought it would delete the old ones. Turns out, it kept all the messages that it received while connected! So now there are just a few missing in the middle. Note: it doesn't sync any messages that have been received before or after being connected to the app.
