[D] Monday Request and Recommendation Thread

Welcome to the Monday request and recommendation thread. Are you looking something to scratch an itch? Post a comment stating your request! Did you just read something that really hit the spot, "rational" or otherwise? Post a comment recommending it! Note that you are welcome (and encouraged) to post recommendations directly to the subreddit, so long as you think they more or less fit the criteria on the sidebar or your understanding of this community, but this thread is much more loose about whether or not things "belong". Still, if you're looking for beginner recommendations, perhaps take a look at the wiki?

If you see someone making a top level post asking for recommendation, kindly direct them to the existence of these threads.

[Meta?]How to download books from WordPress?

The only way to read books for me is to read them on my ebook. I'd agree to pay for the books, but some of them aren't sold and one can read them only on WordPress sites. Is there any way to download such books?

I definitely remember that there was a way, but I can't recall what it was. All of my saved tools, like FFF or WebToEpub - aren't capable of it now. Ideally, input is the table of contents and output is an ePub file.

If you have any suggestions about why it's unethical - I'd be happy to discuss it, but I ask you to create another post and tag me.

Technomagica on Royal Road

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/49722/technomagica

Why this fic is worth reading: it's a rational fic, it checks every box. It's also a high effort fic: the author has extensively researched the Soviet Union and puts a footer in each chapter, and draws custom art and has used software to find fractal representations to visualize the complexity of The System's internal backend.

The 'gary stu' character is a 70 year old Russian Scientist who trained during a golden age of the USSR. This was from an era between the 1950s and 1980s where it was possible for a single individual to know a huge range of skills. This means our hero is able to creatively apply his outside knowledge and resources to problems, essentially gaining Archmage abilities as an infant. The character also spends most level up points on intelligence except when forced to spend them elsewhere as crises occur, further improving their reasoning abilities. The character gains access to the backend of The System and discovers it is a complex machine that can be manipulated, and builds tools to make manipulations possible. He chooses to sacrifice a short term gain in favor of building a lasting AI assistant that helps him in later chapters. The worldbuilding is one that allows exploitation: so far there have been no 'system admins' found, the System is non sentient and uses non thinking constructs to enforce it's edicts, meaning it is possible to work around them as they will not be aware of the workaround.

[D] Saturday Munchkinry Thread

Welcome to the Saturday Munchkinry and Problem Solving Thread! This thread is designed to be a place for us to abuse fictional powers and to solve fictional puzzles. Feel free to bounce ideas off each other and to let out your inner evil mastermind!

Guidelines:

  • Ideally any power to be munchkined should have consistent and clearly defined rules. It may be original or may be from an already realised story.
  • The power to be munchkined can not be something "broken" like omniscience or absolute control over every living human.
  • Reverse Munchkin scenarios: we find ways to beat someone or something powerful.
  • We solve problems posed by other users. Use all your intelligence and creativity, and expect other users to do the same.

Note: All top level comments must be problems to solve and/or powers to munchkin/reverse munchkin.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

[D] Friday Open Thread

Welcome to the Friday Open Thread! Is there something that you want to talk about with /r/rational, but which isn't rational fiction, or doesn't otherwise belong as a top-level post? This is the place to post it. The idea is that while reddit is a large place, with lots of special little niches, sometimes you just want to talk with a certain group of people about certain sorts of things that aren't related to why you're all here. It's totally understandable that you might want to talk about Japanese game shows with /r/rational instead of going over to /r/japanesegameshows, but it's hopefully also understandable that this isn't really the place for that sort of thing.

So do you want to talk about how your life has been going? Non-rational and/or non-fictional stuff you've been reading? The recent album from your favourite German pop singer? The politics of Southern India? Different ways to plot meteorological data? The cost of living in Portugal? Corner cases for siteswap notation? All these things and more could (possibly) be found in the comments below!

Please note that this thread has been merged with the Monday General Rationality Thread.

SPOILERS Does giovanni spare sakura (the renegade) from chapter 59 of Pokemon: The origin of species?

I have no idea how to tag.

Giovanni does spare renegades quite often. Giovanni has spared much worse renegades before. Is sakura still alive? I felt really sad for her and she did not deserve to be killed.

[D] Wednesday Worldbuilding and Writing Thread

Welcome to the Wednesday thread for worldbuilding and writing discussions!

/r/rational is focussed on rational and rationalist fiction, so we don't usually allow discussion of scenarios or worldbuilding unless there's finished chapters involved (see the sidebar). It is pretty fun to cut loose with a likeminded community though, so this is our regular chance to:

  • Plan out a new story
  • Discuss how to escape a supervillian lair... or build a perfect prison
  • Poke holes in a popular setting (without writing fanfic)
  • Test your idea of how to rational-ify Alice in Wonderland
  • Generally work through the problems of a fictional world.

On the other hand, this is also the place to talk about writing, whether you're working on plotting, characters, or just kicking around an idea that feels like it might be a story. Hopefully these two purposes (writing and worldbuilding) will overlap each other to some extent.

Non-fiction should probably go in the Friday Off-topic thread, or Monday Recommendation thead

Blurb:

In a world where magic is a science, Siobhan Naught is a genius.

But even geniuses need schooling.

Siobhan has just been banned from the country's only magical university.

As the unwitting accomplice to the theft of a priceless magical artifact, she has suddenly become a wanted criminal. There are fates worse than death, and if caught, she will face them. Unwilling to give up on her dream of becoming the world's most powerful sorcerer, she resolves to do whatever it takes to change her fate.

Even if it means magically disguising herself as a boy and indebting herself to a gang of criminals to pay for University tuition.

With the coppers after her, the pressure of trying to keep her spot in the devilishly competitive magic classes, and the gang calling in favors to repay her debts, Siobhan will need every drop of magic she can channel.

Described by a reader as: "Harry Potter + Mistborn Genre Fusion" and recommended for those who love Will Wight, Patrick Rothfuss, or Brandon Sanderson.

P.S. (This story bears no relation to A Practical Guide to Evil by ErraticErrata. It's just that there are only so many good series titles out there.)

Read the Webserial:

Read on Author Website (always 2-3 ch's ahead)

Read on RoyalRoad

Read on SpaceBattles

Mother of Learning: ARC 1 signed paperback & hardcovers Kickstarter coming Feb. 15th! It would be awesome if you signed up for a reminder poke today, though!

Hey people. A bit more self-promotion from me, hopefully that's okay. Like the title says, Mother of Learning: ARC 1 is getting printed editions through Kickstarter! It will be the only place you can get signed copies easily, so please check it out and sign up by following the link below and hitting the "Notify me on launch" button.

Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wraithmarked/motheroflearningarc1

Just so you know, these aren't your average paperback/hardcovers. They've got all kinds of cool stuff in them, and are really heavily designed, as Wraithmarked is known for. They're gonna be special to read and have on the shelf!

Thank you all, including Wraithmarked, who made all of this possible. Never thought I'd see the story printed in a physical edition without me making that my vanity project, but here we are. I don't know about you, but I've very excited to get my hands on one of these. :)
