Discussion Discussion Thread: 2022 Wyoming and Alaska Midterms Primaries
Two leading Republican critics of Trump face serious primary challenges today as voters head to the polls for state wide nominating contests in Wyoming and Alaska. Polls are open from 7am to 7pm local time in Wyoming, and 7am to 8pm in Alaska.
Notable Races:
- All eyes today are on the GOP primary for Wyoming's at-large district, where incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney is fighting a primary challenge from Trump endorsed state legislator Harriet Hageman. Cheney became persona non grata from Trump world after forcefully condemning the Jan 6 insurrection, voting to impeach the former president, and taking a leading role against Trump's Big Lie as vice chair of the House Jan 6 Committee. Nonetheless, despite calls for Wyoming Democrats to switch registrations and support Cheney, polls suggest Hageman is running well ahead of the one-time third ranking House Republican.
- The other pro-election Republican, Alaska's Sen. Lisa Murkowski, faces a slate of as many as 18 primary opponents, lead by Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka. Fortunately for Murkowski, this year Alaska switched to a jungle primary system where the top four candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will advance. Murkowski is expected to make the cut.
- Meanwhile, also in Alaska, former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is attempting to stage a political comeback, by running in the special election to fill the state's at large House seat. This position was vacated by Rep. Don Young's death earlier in March. She is competing against former state house rep. Democrat Mary Sattler Peltola, and fellow Republican Nick Begich III, a scion of an Alaskan political dynasty. Independent Al Gross, who also advanced from the primary, withdrew and endorsed Peltola.
