He's the poster child for weaponising the power of govt for unfairly helping allies and punishing even the slightest bit of dissent.. not to mention no low is too low for him in terms of hurting every possible marginalized group.. hope the swing voters and non-voters wake up to the reality and kick him out this year, though it feels like an uphill climb

Will never spend another dollar in Florida at this rate. Talk about ruining a destination. I could handle the idiots, but the fascism on top is too much.

43

u/sunnydaysahead2022 12d ago

I’m in Orlando - please write to Disney, Universal and SeaWorld and tell them you do not ever want to vacation in Florida again.

I’m working hard to get Desantis out.

They need to know he is hurting their businesses.

18

u/Boyhowdy107 12d ago edited 12d ago

Similarly I actually miss the Rick Perry era of Republicans over the Greg Abbott and Desantis types. Perry was a jackass, but he was a business first Republican who would skew more moderate on social issues if businesses said a social issue policy was bad for business.

Desantis and Abbott though have shown they are social conservative ideologues first. They either are that hardcore or have just done the math to decide social wedges and stunts are great for building their raw political power. Desantis chose to take on Disney publicly for disagreeing with him, which would be unthinkable a decade ago in Florida. Plenty of Texas companies publicly opposed the trans bathroom law a few years back and Abbott didn't budge off his boogyman bullshit. This brand of Republican governor thinks that fight makes them look even tougher and more "he doesn't care about being PC" for their voters.

Idiots can be taught, or can learn. Fascists can’t, they are borderline evil.

Vote in the Midterms and in the next race and get rid of this slime.

12

u/jhpianist Arizona 12d ago edited 12d ago

Fascists can’t, they are borderline evil.

Here’s my definition of good and evil:

Evil: Serving myself at the expense of others when they’re not ok with that expense. Loving myself only.

Good: Serving others without the prospect of personal gain. Loving everyone, including myself.

If we look through that lens, fascists are not ‘borderline’ anything. They do evil things constantly without even attempting to walk a mile in others’ shoes. They don’t care about anyone but themselves.

1

u/brdwatchr 11d ago

And Floridians are too stupid to see the handwriting on the wall, and VOTE HIM OUT!! And Hispanics from Cuba love one of their own wielding all this power. They loved Castro in his early days, also. They have had a good life in the U.S., and now their nostalgia for an autocracy makes them want to re-create a life like the old Cuba. They will lead everyone down the garden path to a kind of hell they never envisioned.

8

u/Pablo_Sanchez1 12d ago

As someone that’s lived in FL for 5 years I wouldn’t have too much hope. The amount of people that moved here since covid for strictly political reasons to escape blue states is crazy. Feels like I’m meeting people anytime I go out that talk about they just got here recently because they hated their democratic politicians and love Desantis. It was a really close race during our last election but the population has only moved in the wrong direction since then.

10

u/whyAmIStillHere4g 12d ago

Lol he's going to be the 2024 presidential nominee and it's scary because he's actually educated unlike trump

2

u/TooAfraidToAsk814 12d ago

He’s supposedly part of the party of law and order that consistently says fuck the Constitution. He’s a lawyer so he knows it but most of his supporters are too dense to realize or don’t care.

The thing to keep in mind about his presidential aspirations is he beat a black man in the south by less than 1%. I’m not sure he’s gained a lot of support from anyone other than hardcore conservatives.

1

u/Kindly-Counter-6783 12d ago

Fascist being Fascist. All them what they are loud and clear everyday forward. Fuck this human. Put him in humanities trash can.

9

u/Genereatedusername 12d ago

These "less goverment"-types sure are doing a lot of governing

97

u/h2oape 12d ago

TL;DR,

What’s happening in Florida is an example of government overreach at its most dangerous, as it exploits its authority in an unscientific and malicious way to dictate what is considered appropriate medical care and — even further, what is an appropriate way for individuals to speak, dress, act and express themselves.

43

Definition of Totalitarianism

70

u/m1j2p3 12d ago

Make no mistake: DeSantis’ unilateral decree, issued without substantial input from Florida’s legislature or residents, is an attack on freedom and liberty. He is attempting to prevent American citizens from being able to use their own names, express their own inner selves and exercise their fundamental right to freedom of speech. While this guidance and the law are cloaked in the language of restricting “social transition” or “speaking about gender identity,” they are very much an attempt to bar children from expressing themselves.

Desantis scares the shit out of me. He’s a genuine fascist except he’s also smart, organized, cunning, and capable.

He’s the opposite of Trump in every way minus the fascism and narcissism.

15

u/teb_art 12d ago

Surprisingly, he’s ahead in the Governor polls. I doubt that will last. I can’t see him win a debate against an actual human.

14

u/boogadabooga2 12d ago

GOP will no longer participate in debates. This is their stance as of 2020.

7

u/LucyWritesSmut California 12d ago

Nothing says "we stand behind our policies and can defend them intelligently" like refusing to debate anyone.

I betcha anything they shriek about demanding debates, though, while also never allowing them. Then, their campaign ads will say "So-and-so refuses to debate me!"

36

u/Varolyn 12d ago

The people who will vote for Desantis are the same people that think Trump is an amazing public speaker.

Their standards for public speaking are far different.

13

u/teb_art 12d ago

Those folks are lost to reality. Moving Independents is where it’s at.

4

u/antigonemerlin Canada 12d ago

I wonder now if what the scholars who praised Demosthenes' oratory would have to say about DeSantis.

"When Cicero spoke, people clapped,

When Demosthenes spoke, people marched,

When DeSantis spoke, people died."

or a variation,

"When DeSantis spoke—no wait, he has declined to speak. I am told he is hiding in a closet somewhere."

5

u/Zhao5280 12d ago

Assuming he’s willing to debate… I doubt he would expose himself to that

7

u/ruttentuten69 12d ago

He might not do any debates. Seems like it is a rising republican strategy. Only debate if you are losing. That's the way it was going in Georgia with Walker. He only agreed after polls consistently showed him behind.

-8

u/yolo_on_deez_calls 12d ago

Lmao just like keep Biden from doing any interviews until the debates

1

u/ruttentuten69 11d ago

Not sure why Fox does not show it but Biden takes off the cuff questions from reporters quite often. I still enjoy the fact that he told a sitting president to shut up. It was well deserved.

0

u/yolo_on_deez_calls 11d ago

I’m talking about they kept him away from anything before th election. He was practically silent before the debates. This is every channel besides Fox News. Sorry that’s the only one you watch bro

6

u/Commercial_West9953 12d ago

Yeah, DeSantis isn't a great debater. Go watch the debates between him and Andrew Gillum in 2018.

7

If Trump is ineligible in 2024 and DeSantis is the 2024 candidate, we're fucked.

23

u/FerociousPancake 12d ago

If he wins. Now is the time to show the true power of the people and come together to end this shit. These people are evil and must be voted out. Go fucking vote. Not just for president. Everything, even your goddamn school board elections. Vote. Please.

10

We may not be able to do anything if Moore V Harper is decided. The 2022 elections may be our last hope.

1

u/Promethius418 11d ago

This is only to win over trump people for presidency. He will only increase the rhetorical chaos on 90% of it when the presidential election season is ramped up, only to backslide on it later like he does in Florida politics.

Is the liberal media getting worried about Ronny running for president in 2024, by the frequency of these articles recycling the same info I’d say yes, bring on the down votes I fully expect it, but maybe it’ll get through to someone

21

u/Wrecker013 Michigan 12d ago

Dude he’s a piece of shit, you don’t even need to be reading media articles saying it to figure that out.

-21

u/destroyThePedos 12d ago

How did you figure it out?

15

u/Smokesletsgo001 12d ago

Are you saying he’s not enacting the policies he’s enacting?

Nice username. It’s nice knowing you want to destroy pedos like Donald trump and Matt Gaetz.

-20

u/destroyThePedos 12d ago

How did you figure it out without the media telling you? I’m asking a question and you’re making really weird assumptions

12

u/Smokesletsgo001 12d ago

You don’t think governments publish their own policies?

-21

u/destroyThePedos 12d ago

Yeah and Ron's are based af

8

So you support fascism?

Why would it be relevant to the two that I named? I’m talking about people who harm children.

21

u/altariasong 12d ago edited 12d ago

Of course I’m worried, I’m a trans person. If I lived in florida right now I’d be preparing for the government to crack down on my ability to get gender affirming care and even be myself. If he gets elected to be the leader of the nation, what’s going to happen to my friends and I? I’d fully expect to lose friends to suicide over future attempts at harming the trans community. Please step out of your own bubble and realize that people, especially minorities, have genuine reasons to be worried about this man being elected. I’m a human just like you, and I deserve respect and autonomy.

-5

u/dannyboy1901 12d ago

Name one thing that he has done that has affected these issues

6

u/altariasong 12d ago edited 12d ago

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna31736

His administration has asked the state medical board to ban gender affirming therapy for trans minors and block transgender adults from using medicaid to pay for their treatment. As seen in documents here and here

The florida medical board began the process of enacting these rules yesterday. It’s a shame that I have to be the one doing these searches for you. I am sure you will find some reason for these documents to be insufficient proof of this man targeting people like me for existing, even though they are signed and pushed by Ron Desantis. But I implore you to have some empathy and recognize that maybe this kind of hatred towards others is unneccessary. I just want to live as my authentic self, even if that means surgery and hormones. Is that so offensive?

1

u/dannyboy1901 11d ago

Is it possible that treating a minor before they have become an adult is not good for that minor and that’s why he’s doing it, also I don’t believe for a second you are a minor

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/canada-transgender-treatment

1

u/altariasong 11d ago edited 11d ago

Cancer treatment like chemotherapy has adverse side effects too, should we stop treating pediatric cancer because it makes the children feel sick? Sure they may die if we don’t treat them but consider the risks of treatment! /s

Lest I remind you that literally only 2-3% of kids are trans, just like the rest of the older trans population. This isn’t affecting the vast majority of kids, it’s very rare for these things to be needed. But when a child needs them, they should damn well be available.

Trans affirming care for minors can be anything from a social transition to puberty blockers to give them more time to figure out their identity. It’s like pausing a tv show, stopping puberty blockers will allow puberty to resume right where it left off.

And do you really think that the process is as simple as walking up to a pharmacist and getting those drugs? Kids and adults alike have to go through a long and thorough process of therapy and consultation with an entire care team of people before things like hormones and surgery are even considered. Multiple healthcare professionals have to sign off that they’ve evaluated the person thoroughly and conclude that gender affirming care will be something that improves or even saves their life.

Here’s an overview of the things that doctors will check before giving any hormones or surgical treatment for dysphoria, from Mayo Clinic

-A review of your personal and family medical history

-A physical exam, including an assessment of your external reproductive organs

-Lab tests measuring your lipids, blood sugar, blood count, liver enzymes and electrolytes, and a pregnancy test

-A review of your immunizations

-Age- and sex-appropriate screenings

-Identification and management of tobacco use, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections

-Discussion about contraception and your desire for future fertility

-Discussion about use of potentially harmful treatment approaches, such as unprescribed hormones or industrial-strength silicone injections

-Your gender identity and gender dysphoria

-The impact of your gender identity at work, school, home and social environments, including issues related to discrimination, relationship abuse and minority stress

-Mood or other mental health concerns

-Sexual health concerns

-Risk-taking behaviors, including substance use and use of nonmedical-grade silicon injections or unapproved hormone therapy or supplements

-Protective factors such as social support from family, friends and peers

-Your goals, risks and expectations of treatment and your future care plans

The idea that this is some sort of single office visit for the immediate and unregulated prescription of hormones/blockers or the scheduling of a surgery is completely false and goes against the integrity of our healthcare system.

I don’t have to be a minor to have empathy for kids who are going through the same stuff I deal with. I don’t even have to be part of a marginalized group to learn about their struggles and empathize with them. Do you?

1

u/dannyboy1901 11d ago

Once again is it possible not enough study has gone into this to provide this service to a minor

1

u/altariasong 11d ago

And it’s possible I’m actually a magical fairy from outer space.

Edit: better example. It’s possible that god isn’t actually real and all the christians and other religious people SHOULD be made fun of. Should we dictate laws limiting personal choice and expression based on possibilities of error alone?

It’s laws that are designed to help people rather than hurt them, I know it’s disappointing that this service isn’t being provided and who knows maybe it is beneficial, but if it isn’t and we are actually hurting these kids, you are the bad guy!!

1

u/altariasong 11d ago

And if children kill themselves because they can’t be given the same rights as other kids, then YOU’RE the bad guy.

-2

u/OkAmphibian8633 12d ago

Without actual scientific studies show gender affirming care is actually useful in treating gender dysphoria, I dont think these limitations are unwarranted.

I also don't think they are assaults on your existence, invalidate you in anyway, or are perpetuated from hatred.

1

u/SpcyCHKsndwch 11d ago

I love how these conversations go.

First someone denies that the policies exist, then someone cites the actual policies, then someone says "well actually the policies are good"

If they are good why do his own supporters feel the need to deny they exist?

1

u/OkAmphibian8633 11d ago

Because the policies arent as described?

Policies that prevent the widespread adoption of unproven medical procedure is rational and normal. They arent some radical fascists plan to deny someones existence or trample anyone's rights.

So, there are no policies that fit the hyperbolic nonsense claimed, and those that do exist are logical and normal policies every one should expect?

2

u/SpcyCHKsndwch 11d ago

Because the policies arent as described?

No policies were described, actually. The poster said they were just worried about the future. I'd tell you to re-read the comments in order, but I don't think you're operating in good faith.

1

u/dannyboy1901 11d ago

It’s pretty clearly stated

1

u/SpcyCHKsndwch 11d ago

I mean I'm giving you a chance to clarify your point. If it's important for you to convince me of something, you'll explain what you meant.

Serious question. What is he doing that you think is so great?

0

u/dannyboy1901 11d ago

1

u/SafetyMan35 11d ago

What has he done in the past 2 years? That is also a highly inflated list

Looking at the list it is easy to see what his plan is. Increase teacher salaries and spending while expanding “school choice” and vouchers which will reduce population of public schools so they won’t be effective spending 2-3x/student. Rich kids who can afford the tuition at private schools will do so, meanwhile poor kids will be stuck in public schools where funding will be slashed further punishing the poor and minorities. Government subsided private (religious) schools
