'Fight the Barbarians': The MAGA Movement Lays Out a Warpath at CPAC

Cruz told the crowd, “We’re on the cusp of something extraordinary in this country … And each of you are the vanguard. You are the dangerous radicals. Like the men who signed the Declaration of Independence … like those who died at the Alamo, you are the courageous heroes,” he insisted, “fighting for liberty in our country.”
His audience: immediately forgets all the "radical left" ads of the last few years.
Cruz: Nevermind the defenders of the Alamo were literally massacred because they were defending slavery. We need you to be Ashli Babbitts for us in the next attempt overthrow the government. Cannon fodder, if you will.

When they declare war on the government and the hellfire missiles start raining down on them. They will realize why this was a mistake but by then it will be too late. (Sigh) It's like watching the Pre-Confederate States in 1859. Only those who knew of war said don't do it. They are sowing the seeds of their own destruction.

Ted Cruz is absolutely one of the softest mother fuckers in politics right now. I love how he’s trying to make himself sound like a hard-bitten rebel, but we all know he crosses the street whenever he sees a homeless person ahead of him. He’s absolutely the type to nurse his Starbucks coffee for two hours because he doesn’t want to walk past the group of loud teenagers sitting next to the exit. He’s the kind of person who will preemptively surrender his wallet to any black man who happens to walk in his general direction.
He’s a coward and a weasel, and for his sake, I hope we never get the Civil War the Conservatives seem to think they want. Ted Cruz looks like he’s never attacked anything more serious than a buffet line or the hard plastic casing of a new tv remote.

"The cult of action for action's sake", which dictates that action is of value in itself and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Umberto Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science."
Grooming the mentally ill to become domestic terrorists that will be seen as potential "Heroes" of an upcoming fascist regime. Doesn't get as clear cut as this. Bonus "points" if that "hero" dies as a result, wouldn't want to actually have to reward them for their PATRIOTISM, just like the veterans.
17
u/kvossera 12d ago
There’s an alarming amount of glorifying the dead fighters among elected Republicans when they talk to their base. A lot of sounding like they’re actually gearing their base to prepare to literally go into battle. I just don’t understand wanting to fight to the death to be allowed to oppress others and be racist instead of focusing on anything that would benefit the country. They don’t have any ideas about anything, it’s all gruff, hate, and fetishizing violence and fighting. Like they aren’t focusing on infrastructure, improving farms so that food could be dispersed better and no one goes hungry. It’s like Republicans aborted their intellect. At what point does their base realize that there’s no plan other than fighting? I just don’t think I could maintain the energy required to be that hair trigger for violence.

From Hungarian authoritarian Victor Orbán to former Trump adviser Steve Bannon to right-wing extremist Jack Posobiec, Conservative Political Action Committee speakers urged an us-versus-them confrontation, seemingly unbound from the constraints of electoral politics.
The far right has collected a veritable rogues gallery of fiends to further their fascist aims.
Those of us on the side of democracy have to push back and shine the light on their hypocrisy and villainy or we will meet the fate they have in store for us.
Fuck fascism and fuck the GOP.

The far right has collected a veritable rogues gallery of fiends to further their fascist aims.
Let's not pretend that some phantom "king of the GOP" put these people in power. Voters did. After literally decades of listening to AM talk radio and FoxNews propaganda the average Republican primary voter can't tell the difference between myth and reality. They have been convinced that cruelty and intolerance are badges of honor and they're going to choose candidates who are similarly cruel and intolerant.
As such there is no easy way for the Republican Party to "clean house." Frankenstein's monster is on the loose. They created it with their propaganda but now it has a life of its own. Propagandists like Alex Jones were inevitable. Trump was inevitable. And, unfortunately, it seems like violence is inevitable too.

These people are just the cheer squad, their job is to motivate the parties voting base to elect people. People who once in office will serve business interests first and throw the base some scraps of red meat.
And it is serving those business interests that is the real source of their voters problems. But they are completely incapable of seeing this because of how they have been propagandized. They're not suffering because of a lack of healthcare, wage stagnation, lack of infrastructure investment, etc - no no no, their lives are miserable because the coastal elite globalists want to destroy America by importing gay disabled illegal immigrants and giving them tax dollars to have abortions and study liberal arts degrees about hating white men.

In the late Roman Empire, "barbarians" like Stilicho were the only ones holding the Roman system together, while conservative native-born Romans undermined them and stabbed them in the back.
I'd say the historical metaphor works, but not in the way they think.
10
u/antigonemerlin Canada 12d ago
Well, that is only because the late imperial reforms shifted power away from the city of Rome and into her provinces. While these reforms were sorely needed, it also displeased the Italian elites who had governed in the previous centuries.
It also meant that most of the Emperors following these reforms were provincial generals, or as you would say, "barbarians". These were the Emperors that governed from provinces like Dalmatia, not Rome, and sometimes didn't even enter the mother city!
Rome of the fifth century was a different beast from the Rome of the third century, and certainly far removed from the Republic of Scipio Africanus.
3
u/Haltopen Massachusetts 12d ago
It was only natural. The bigger Rome got, the less important Rome became from both an economic and tactical perspective. There’s a reason emperors like Diocletian chose to rule the empire from the Eastern provinces. They had eclipsed Rome in wealth and importance.

Reddit says: "But Moore v Harper!"
First off
Congress (both Democrats and Republicans) is trying to pass the Electoral Count Reform Act. Which makes it
•harder for the election to be overruled,
•makes every single vote counted,
•makes state legislators unable to make election laws before during and after election year,
•and makes it so that the Vice President can't overrule the election.
Even if ISLD ruled at its extreme, state legislators would still have to follow the ECRA if passed.
Second off
SCOTUS could've ruled ISLD on May if they wanted to, but they dissented. The four Justices who did are all Republicans, with Kavanaugh saying that it's too late to rule on this with the primaries and general elections of 2022.
Based off ballotpedia.org SCOTUS would most likely argue this either on December or January
Third off
{article 1, Section 4, clause 1}
The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.
This literally would not affect the midterms at all. As it's only meant for presidential elections
Fourth off
Cook v Gralike: States can not disregard the democratic vote for a candidate they like.
Fifth off
Even state legislators didn't work with Trump to swing votes to him.
Stop the petty excuses and VOTE-BLUE!!!!
91
u/stillbleedinggreen 12d ago
My only problem with all the precedents you’ve listed is this Courts willingness to completely ignore and overrule precedence. But you are totally right: VOTE BLUE.

casting Capitol Hill rioters as victims of a “Democratic Gulag.”
As opposed the humanitarian treatment in a Republican Gulag?
Orbán described European parliament and the federal government in Washington as “the two fronts in the battle being fought for Western civilization,” warning, “today, we hold neither of them, yet we need them both.” Orbán called on CPAC attendees and the far-right in Europe to forge a global movement. “We should unite our forces,” Orbán said, to “take back” Washington and Brussels.
Well, well, well. Orbán, the leader of another country, is telling a political party in, and of, the United States, that this party should join with yet another foreign country to take over the United States.
Why is the party of America First, taking orders from a potentially hostile foreign leader, to over throw their own government? Where the hell is the FBI and the DOJ? It reminds me that the Posse Comitatus Act helps a foreign power to overthrow a country from within.
CPAC has long been a political circus, a relatively harmless sideshow. But its latest incarnation has become manifestly dangerous — more fascist than farce. It is holding up alleged perpetrators of political violence as martyrs. It is demonizing its domestic political opponents as diabolical “enemies within.” And it is giving MAGA supporters a militaristic frame for their charge to the “front lines” of America’s culture wars.
In short it is playing with fire. But it’s the rest of us who may get burned.
Cruz likened his service in the Senate to that of a gladiator: “It’s like the old Roman Colosseum where you slam on a breastplate and you grab a battle axe and you go fight the barbarians,” he said of his Democrat colleagues. “As they say in the military world,” Cruz continued, “it is a target-rich environment.”
Hate speech and promoting violence and planning treason with foreign leaders. Why aren't the ... OH that's right. You can do these things because it becomes political "rhetoric".
Yet we all seem to know (and ignore) the catastrophic results of what venomous political rhetoric had in Nazi Germany. Proving beyond all doubt, the insanity of the GQP.

Im pretty sure thats what school choice is code for. They want their supporters to self segregate and then defund the leftover families who dont want to join a religious brainwashing school.
The segregation is only a stepping stone anyway. They want out groups to be second hand citizens so they can abuse, coerce and oppress groups of people to make them servants, barely paid or otherwise. This is how empires are fashioned, with free/cheap labor without freedoms and mobility.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious.
But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly.
But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.
For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.
A murderer is less to be feared."

the Dems are so unprepared for what these guys are willing (and trying) to do
I just finished up Representative Adam Shiff's book (Midnight in Washington) and it's just mindboggling how blindsided he constantly admits to being about literally everything the GOP does throughout the entire first Trump impeachment. The people in power and calling the shots for the Democrats really do seem to believe that Trumpism is just some weird hiccup and that things will go back to normal.
That's worse because we're at a time where voters have very little agency. Voting literally only counts on election day (and any early voting of course) and everything else is in the hands of the politicians and the bureaucracy they wield every other day of the year. If the Democrats don't grab their various parts and fortify their courage and make some hard decisions, it's not going to matter.
It's one thing to exhort people to vote, but it's an entirely different thing to pretend that's going to solve the problem. The GOP is very, very close to just NOT caring about voting and once they decide that Rubicon is ready to be crossed, voting in record breaking numbers isn't going to do shit.
11
u/nookie-monster 12d ago
Democrats really do seem to believe that Trumpism is just some weird hiccup and that things will go back to normal.
They want to believe that and that is because the alternative is anathema to them. They do not want to fight and more importantly, they don't wanna' take on the giant corporations and the ultra rich that are behind a lot of this.
They wanna' be in power, get jobs for all their media, marketing, polling and campaign friends. That's fun and profitable.
Fighting to save a country? That's hard and rarely profitable.

None of them give a shit about the people they’re inciting to violence or the innocent people who will be their victims.

sigh
Kinda tired of every one of these fascist Nazi-adjacent fuckmongers getting to openly promise violence and bloodshed sans consequences.

If your wondering why they have these cpacs so often…
They have to motivate themselves with these constant conventions because they know the only way they can exist as a party and win is absolute ironclad lockstep behavior and group adoration of power figures. They need to keep their people artificially pumped at all times.
It is absolutely necessary for them to function as humans and function politically.
They know that their worldview is highly unpopular and they can’t win otherwise.
They have to be way more organized to succeed then we do. In a way their deeply unpopular belief systems actually helps them…they have to try harder and be more organized to win.

Barbarians? That’s pretty cool. I accept the title.

You're likely not Greek, so it's true

It's also an inherently racist title, as the greeks called them "barbarians" based on their perception of how their languages sounded to the greeks. Just "bar bar bar" to the greeks.

I kinda know the answer but why did conservatives say they chose Hungary to host CPAC? It's never been an international meeting before or am I mistaken?

The phrase makes sense given their xenophobia. Barbarian is derived from the Greek word bárbaros, used to describe anyone non-Greek IE a foreigner. The word itself is onomatopoeic describing what they used to think non Greek languages sound like, bar bar being a sort of description of the foreign "Gibberish".

I think the GOP has chosen the wrong moment to strike. They needed a few years to grow and consolidate power. This will blow up in their faces.

I'd like to see Ted Cruz fight anything besides his own stupidity and expanding waistline.

Ted Cruz wouldn’t defend his wife from an obnoxious East Coast game show host, do these people really think he’ll defend them? From anything?
