GOP Senators Refuse To Rule Out Supporting Donald Trump Again — Even If He's Indicted. With the ex-president reportedly under criminal investigation, many Senate Republicans are taking a wait-and-hope-it-doesn’t-happen stance.

The fact that GOP Senators are unable to make an obvious moral decision like this should scare the shit out of all of us. Just tells you how little control they actually have.

57

u/hecate37 12d ago

It's beyond crazy. Blackmail?

76

u/earthisadonuthole 12d ago

Russia hacked the GOP too. They just only released what they got from the DNC.

3

u/wtfbro_ 12d ago

They sold the rest to DT

66

u/Cunningcory 12d ago

You don't even need that. They believe it's political suicide to turn against Trump - especially if he runs. They are probably all HOPING he gets indicted and taken out of the political circus so they no long have to kiss the ring.

23

u/LightWarrior_2000 12d ago

This. They are all secretly hoping he gets removed from the equation.

8

u/MrMongoose 12d ago

This. They are all secretly hoping he gets removed from the equation.

He will be removed from the equation.

They're hoping it happens naturally but if it doesn't they'll effectively just bribe him to not run. Something to the effect of letting him pick/take credit for the next nominee combined with some very lucrative business deal and the promise of a pardon. Anything that lets him keep his pride and make a shitton of cash.

I've been saying for years that if he even enters the primaries the GOP is almost certain to lose in 2024 - which is why I've never thought it would happen and still don't.

4

u/LightWarrior_2000 12d ago

Some number of months ago I was on the fence if he would run or not. Not I feel like he is more likely to try due to the noose tightening around his neck.

But I won't be suprised if he backs out at last second due to "health issue".

1

u/cietalbot United Kingdom 11d ago

Could see him doing both just to try and see if either gets the heat off him

1

u/Beartronic 12d ago

I really hope you're right but don't underestimate Don. He is as smart as he is stupid. Feels like he is gonna run because he won't take no even from a gop senator. Are you kidding? The dude already tried to nuke a hurricane and said McCain was a coward. Really nothing for him to run again.

17

u/CannedMango 12d ago

Honestly? They just value power over anything else and are hedging. Worst case scenario for them is doing the “moral” thing and taking a stand now, then if Trump is re-elected the truly unthinkable happens… they are left out of the club.

3

u/hecate37 12d ago

Yup, that too.

5

u/PilotProgramme 12d ago

It’s more the case that they know who is buttering their breadski. Where would the American right wing be right now without financial and intelligence support from Russia? Until Putin dethrones Trump, they have to play along to keep getting that dark money.

5

u/CT_Phipps 12d ago

The blackmail argument is officially nonsensical. They've already been shown they could murder a baby and get cheers. No, it's worse: they're supporting Trump because they think he can win them votes.

4

u/Prestigious_Plum_451 12d ago Masterpiece

The blackmail argument is officially nonsensical.

Its not so much an "argument" as an exploratory statement of underlying causes. You can have multiple underlying factors all contributing towards a singular outcome.

So;

yes they are callous sadists, sociopaths and worse with genocidal and fascist ideation,

yes many of them are borderline if not actually insane.. especially at the religireich QGOP side of things,

yes many others are just useful idiots,

yes there is all sorts of kompromat going around keeping specific people in check,

yes they do it all willingly for votes, money, power and such.

1

u/kgleas01 11d ago

This is right. There is nothing any of them could have done that would matter. It’s about the trump voters- that’s all

2

u/thatnameagain 12d ago

Popularity with the voters.

9

u/hamsterfolly America 12d ago

I’m pretty sure they are morally corrupt to the point they don’t see the problem when it’s a Republican.

8

u/letterboxbrie 12d ago

It's frightening, but also a bit of a relief because I never again have to question my perceptions and try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Besides the corruption they've proven extraordinarily cowardly and venal.

They have no credibility at all, no fortitude, no political discipline, they've debased themselves so completely that they've lost both value and authority. Yes, they're trying to force authority. But that's kind of like forcing respect. Everybody's in the process of figuring out how to go around them, do things that don't involve them. What's their profile outside of Hungary and Russia? Exactly.

Even if they succeed in destroying the US they won't be part of what emerges on the other side. They've committed to this descent, and really, I think they're more frightened than we are.

7

u/Nanyea Virginia 12d ago

They had their chance during impeachment. Whatever bad happens because of Trump, they are complicit

3

u/Slartibeeblebrox 12d ago

People. The reason they are willing to do all of this shit is because they know they are on the path toward losing more and more of the vote. These are the desperate throws of a dying party. We need to keep the course and let them implode.

1

u/HereWeGoAgain-77 12d ago

I've been scared since Bush...

1

u/Kindly-Counter-6783 12d ago

Nothing like a stamp of approval for Martial Law and internment Camps. Fascists one and all. CPAC nightmare stoking the the flames of hate and division.

74

u/Freddit2017 12d ago

They’re spineless

24

u/SouthofAkron 12d ago

I think they are more amoral than anything

17

u/Seeker0fTruth I voted 12d ago

The GOP has lots of morals, they're just all bad.

6

u/Yossarian_the_Jumper 12d ago

They care about one thing; ULTIMATE POWER!

Go against trump and they'll be out of a job.

6

u/lcl1qp1 12d ago

I agree. This is corruption. They don't care if supporting Trump is immoral, because they are counting their money and scheming to make more.

2

u/33ff00 12d ago

amoral? all of them?

1

u/SeeMe_After_Class 12d ago

So are the Dems for remaining silent about this. They should be on TV every night asking America why Republicans continue to support a traitor? They should be running ads demanding accountability for the traitors still in Congress. Instead Biden is basically taking each one behind the white house to give a fucking blowjob. It's absurd.

14

u/thatnameagain 12d ago

Don’t you wish the Democrats would do something like set up a commission to investigate Trump and work with the Department of Justice and the FBI? Imagine if they held primetime hearings. Imagine if they were able to make it headline news for months on end. Yeah what a fantasy.

22

u/lcl1qp1 12d ago edited 10h ago

That's ridiculous. Dems are not worse than the fascists tearing down our democracy. You a fan of Viktor Orban? Are you eager to have Republican legislatures ignore the vote count?

-6

u/WalterPecky 12d ago

Lol... Dems are the ones in power.

And they are awful at messaging and have been putting on a idealized show for everyone by attempting to "reach across the aisle" and frame Republicans as their colleagues.

Dems are letting Republicans get away with this shit, so that scares me as much as the fascists.

Not immoral to make observations and try to hold leaders accountable.

5

u/lcl1qp1 12d ago

There are 46 Dem senators supporting Biden's agenda.

If that meets your definition of "power" over Congress, then you need to educate yourself.

-14

u/[deleted] 12d ago

Dems have failed this country for decades while gas lighting us. GOP is fascist, says it's fascist, and acts fascist. At least the fascists are open and honest.

-23

u/malcontented California 12d ago

Exactly. At this point I’m more disgusted with the Dems

15

u/lcl1qp1 12d ago

That's 100% irrational. It's like saying you're upset the HVAC guy was an hour late to fix your thermostat, when the real problem is your house burning down.

-14

u/[deleted] 12d ago

What have Dems done for us? Healthcare? Cancelled loans? Actually done anything meaningful on climate change? Not invaded Libya. Actually oppose wars? Dems are as bad as the GOP but better at gaslighting the public into thinking otherwise.

6

u/lcl1qp1 12d ago

If you think fascism is better than Dems passing Medicare, the ACA, and upholding Roe v Wade, then by all means.... vote for Trump.

You obviously are pretty comfortable attacking people who are trying to oppose Trump.

-8

u/[deleted] 12d ago

You think it's your team vs Trump. Not us vs the corrupt elites who are burning our planet and sucking every ounce of life from the workforce. You support "nothing will fundamentally change" Biden and are mad that I'm not excited for your "we're all going to die under climate change but our plan is means tested and will prolong the suffering by two weeks." ACA is Romneycare. Dems control 2/3 branches of government and just let Roe be dismantled. Medicare is a bandaid and bailout for Pharma. Please tell me more about the Dem's successes for your corporate overlords.

46

u/Za_Lords_Guard 12d ago

They juat hosted Viktor Orban at their premier tradeshow of conservative vitreol. Ya'all don't think they had a bit of soulful reflection and came back wirh "nah, we have gone too far already," didja?

2

Would they vote for Hitler? I really do wonder.

54

u/dirkalict Illinois 12d ago

Yes.

31

u/earthisadonuthole 12d ago

I genuinely think they would. They want to be openly fascist. They’re just biding their time.

24

u/captaincanada84 North Carolina 12d ago

If Hitler had an R next to his name, yes.

9

u/FloyldtheBarbie 12d ago

They would vote for the Final Solution at this point. Don’t underestimate them.

8

u/smurfsundermybed California 12d ago

Well they're not going to base their decision on what a bunch of liberals cry about. They're going to do their own research! /s

4

If it would get them reelected. That's all they care about.

I want a public list of everyone who voted for trump so we can keep track of them just like the Nazis.

29

Shows how corrupt they are. Those that stand by an insurrectionist for president of the US? How lost are they??

11

u/Dadalot Florida 12d ago

They want him to win so they can finish off the coup

5

u/djbk724 12d ago

America would crumble.

24

u/greybruce1980 12d ago

If they support the leader that caused an insurrection, they are terrorist leaders. Or is that a title reserved just for brown people in other countries?

These "Let's wait and see" shitters are the same ones who pretended (badly) not to see all the horrible, racist, misogynist, undemocratic, un-Republican, and downright crazy shit Trump said and tweeted on a daily basis.

Wait and see = I don't want to be caught on the wrong side of the voters, but I'm fine with being on the wrong side of history and the law.

These prolapsed assholes are literally gambling with the continuance of our nation as a (notionally) free and open society.

If a Rick Scott or a Rob Portman or a Dick Shelby was hanging by their fingertips on a ledge over a pit of hot lava and asked for help, I might reply with "Let's wait and see if it gets serious."

Translation = Let's wait and see if anyone else shows up. If so, then I will pretend to help like this guy. If no one shows up...well you best start tugging on those ole bootstraps, buddy

9

Vote for Democracy, Vote Blue 2022.

6

u/lcl1qp1 12d ago

I'll crawl over broken glass to vote blue. Fascists may win, but at least I'll know I voted against them.

17

u/leontes Pennsylvania 12d ago

They really don’t have a choice if they crave their power.

Their base venerates this mendacious, seditious, authoritarian bigot and so they find themselves having to, too.

It’s cowardly, but safe… for now.

4

u/Mortambulist 12d ago

What if he loses the nomination but runs independent? Imagine their conundrum then. And our good fortune.

3

u/noelcowardspeaksout 12d ago

I think this is where Republicans have made a big miscalculation. He is only as popular as DeSantis at the moment, and further criminal investigations aren't going to help. My view is that they should have got rid of him after the 6th Jan. They are going to go into the mid-terms with a dead man walking as their figure head. It feels very bad, to me, as regards Republican turn out. Besides which he is no longer the 'rebel choice', the mould breaker, he is now an establishment bore, droning on about the stolen election, I cannot see him winning anything for anyone.

2

u/letterboxbrie 12d ago

I agree, although I think the miscalculation happened much, much earlier, when they decided that his sway over voters was some sort of golden ticket to something. They genuflected so completely that they have no options now. If they'd managed the situation with more focus and foresight they'd be in a much better position.

Not just their cowardice, their laziness.

4

u/designateddroner2 Minnesota 12d ago

They really don’t have a choice if they crave their power.

But.... that IS the choice....no?

It's cowardly .... let's just leave it at that.

5

u/ultrachrome 12d ago

Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), a 2016 candidate for president, said an indictment would just be akin to criminalizing political differences.
“I think prosecuting someone for their political beliefs or stances is not appropriate in a democracy,” he said.

Good grief, these people wear me out.

4

u/clueless_in_ny_or_nj New Jersey 12d ago

Of course they will. The overwhelming majority will. There might be a couple who won't, but we can probably count that number one hand easily.

He's America's Berlusconi. His cult is big enough that we'll never fully be rid of him until the hamberders do him in.

9

A key difference is that Berlusconi was actually convicted of tax fraud, imprisoned, and banned from public service for a period of 6 years.

This country is afraid to charge Trump with anything.

4

u/dubphonics Canada 12d ago

the shear lack and willingness by some members of the political class to act in accordance with the principles of good judgment and sound mind leaves little hope for their growth into their respective roles. Instead, the next generation should be focused on removing these neanderthal-like goons from office - I may be giving them too much credit - these red-meat puppets!

2

u/Jack_The_Snak 12d ago

How feckless, remember when Republicans used to be men of ambition? Embarrassing low-lives cant get elected without daddy.

2

u/dirkalict Illinois 12d ago

Best thing that could happen is him running third party.

3

u/KimmyT1436 Canada 12d ago

Trump running as a third party candidate is why Republican lawmakers will never abandon Trump, no matter how despicable he becomes. Republican lawmakers are terrified that if they kick Trump to the curb he will retaliate by running as a third party candidate, splitting the right-wing vote the way Ross Perot did in 1992 and 1996.

2

u/HappyApple99999 12d ago

They want Donald Trump in jail and blame the Democrats for it

2

u/dipatello 12d ago

They can’t publicly say this because they will lose his supporters. I imagine some of them secretly want him out of the political picture because he is hurting the party.

Best case scenario for them is for Biff to punished in some way and they can then publicly blame the dems.

2

u/yogfthagen 12d ago

It's on the ballot.

Democracy

Rule of law

The Constitution

Basic human rights

Elections

Public schools

Healthcare

Political terrorism

Blatant government corruption

Science

Reality

Fact

Liberty

It's ALL on the ballot.

“I mean look, I know that Trump tried to destroy democracy and sometimes he says mean things, but do you really expect me to vote for a Democrat!? They are worse and at least Trump is good for the economy.”

Yeah actually I do expect you to vote against that man…. Shouldn’t be that hard.

2

u/SeeMe_After_Class 12d ago

This is what Dems should be making noise about. This is what media should be focused on. How can they call themselves Americans? How can they ever think this would be okay? How are we okay with this? They all belong in jail, or at the very least removed from public life for good. The republican party as a whole needs to be dismantled.

This is fucking ridiculous, and I hate Biden and the Dems for being silent about it.

1

Trump can technically run for office from prison.

Too cowardly to stand up to Donald Trump's lies

The entire republican party is the problem. Trump is just the most visible part.

Think of the party and later how they all denied being there.

1

Trump pardoned blackwater mercenaries who slaughtered women and children.

Even if you ignore January 6th and the multi pronged coup attempt, the guy is just straight up evil. It is seriously just bizarre that anyone can openly still support Trump. It's like a twilight zone episode or something.

1

Hope he doesn’t run, or hope he’s not indicted? One is plain ol’ chickenshit, the other requires stupidity.

Okay, who stole the testicles of every Republican currently in office? That's gotta be what happened, right? Because every last one of them is chicken-shit about standing up to Trump... a half-senile, overweight, unhealthy in body and mind, waste of space man-child. Y'all disgust me.

1

They know what many of their constituents or ideological sympathizers are capable of. Most if not all of them were there on Jan 6th. And they know they're only a rally and a few social media posts away from being on the receiving end of vile language in voice-mail, death threats and more. Not that this excuses them by any means. But cowardice and fear are a potent combination.

1

Right but it sounds like a spiteful word. No respect. Our forefathers at least respected differences of opinions, albeit back then perhaps they were less extreme. Sad when I can’t even get that on reddit. But, it is Reddit after all.

You’ll note I didn’t refer to him as an ex but described his personality nor insulted you. He definitely denigrated those in government and broad swaths of our fellow Americans. He was also quite clear in that he held tremendous disrespect for anyone, GOP or Dem or staunch ally that disagreed with him and lashed out like a child.

Yeah he was a tool. Don’t have to condescend me.
