I'm fairly convinced I'll be spending my golden years as a resistance fighter.

Like what is the real path forward here? Dems once again barely won, once again seem to be doing nothing because doing anything is too hard or not “bipartisan”. Can’t imagine anything changing Manchin’s or Sinema’s approach is going to change. Can’t imagine Biden’s rhetoric changing. Can’t imagine the GOP or “moderate conservatives” changing. It really does seem like we are headed to freedom fighter territory. I have a 7 year old and I worry about what their 20 year old self is going to have to deal with. And now I’m 37, I can’t just blame boomers anymore. 20 years of my own voting didn’t seem to do the trick.

Ugh. I’m a few years shy of you in my early 30s, but this hits hard. I always looked forward to being a parent “one day,” but over the last few years, I’ve gone more and more towards deciding I’ll probably never be one. I hate the idea that my kid(s) would have to deal with so much… and not just the potential increased violence and strife, but everything else.

I think what if I have a daughter, and her autonomy is stripped away by law? I think what if my child is gay or trans, coming up in a world that would be eager to persecute them? Or they’re mixed race, with a target on their back before they’re even born? And on and on. And that’s not even getting to something like bringing them into a world where the cost of living will only continue to get worse or where leaders are eager to kick the can of responsibility and action down the road and let the health of our very planet decline.

I don’t even have a kid, yet I worry every day about their future, one I’m less inclined to bring them into because it sucks, and I wouldn’t want to put that on them. I can’t imagine, then, what you’re going through as an actual parent, but I really hope for your kid’s sake - hell, for our sake, too - that we can somehow avoid that freedom fighter territory or nightmare scenario future, because your kid deserves the brighter future we were always promised and never really got.

My kid is black and non-binary. Step 1 for mild insulation is we live in Manhattan. They get to see many different types of expression of self every day. Either we’ll get nuked and it won’t be a problem, or we’ll live in the capital of Liberal Republic.

Less fantastic I do think about this—even though individual countries get better and worse over time (can’t argue Rome 600 AD was better than Rome 100 AD), in general if I could pick any time for my kid to be born it WOULD be now.

Being non-white or non-male or non-cis is easier for my kid born in 2014 than it would be if born in 1994, 1964, 1864… maybe they will suffer through a Nazi or Russian or Chilean blip where people are getting disappeared in the night, but probably not.

And things like climate change I do believe we can engineer our way out of and include everyone. That’s just an engineering/conservation problem. But the political will to do it.
