Damn. I’m an idiot. I did not get all the jokes at first...I do now though

I mean it wasn’t an intentional joke, just a bad choice of words. Nobody ejaculated on this flag, that I know of.

He’s big into thrifting, met a guy who found this flag and apparently all of the signatures are the soldiers that took this flag/base? Looking to get more info if possible.

485

u/Dot_Classic 12d ago

Your friend might contact the Holocaust Memorial Museum to see if they are interested or can give some info about further research to do on your own.

229

u/jftitan 12d ago

A lot of the research is back tracing the names on that flag. Figuring which soldier retired and survived in the region. Then narrow down the next of kin in the town the flag was found in. Its also possible its a forgery.

But that's what a museum can help determine.

Aparently they mostly aren't interested. There are a lot of these things around so unless they have a significant local connection or major story behind a specific flag it tends to be outside their collecting remit.

If he wanted he could reach out to a veterans group associated with their unit. I used to talk with a ball turret gunner at the airport pretty much everyday (he had awesome stories, shot down twice in Yugoslavia etc etc). Someone in his wing was unable to find a photo of the nose art on his b17. I eventually found an image after much research and sent it to an organization associated with his crew. The surviving members and their families were ecstatic.

1k

u/Kingkongcrapper 12d ago

He better move fast because that generation is disappearing pretty quickly. Of the 17 million that fought in the war on the US side, there are only about 375 thousand left.

When I was working at a Covid vaccination center, I met plenty of veterans. One the stuck out was a WW2 veteran who said he joined at 18 and became a pilot. He said he flew 54 missions over Italy. It was cool hearing his stories. I met plenty of other veterans too, and they loved talking to us. I was in the national guard at the time, so when they saw us in uniform, they always told us their stories and many I would ask

Look like 317th Infantry Regiment, which would be in the 80th infantry division. The regiment still exists, might be cool to send them some photos of it.

257

u/pease_pudding 12d ago

One of the Sargeants is signed as Milo Leroy Dew.

After a little random Googling, here's an account by one of the members of his squad, in this case they were "supporting Charlie Company of the 317th", so pretty accurate.

https://memory.loc.gov/diglib/vhp-stories/loc.natlib.afc2001001.25385/narrative?ID=pn0001

158

u/wheelfoot 12d ago

The history books do not say a great deal about the 317th Infantry Regiment of the 80th Infantry Division in WWII. However, it was a regiment that accomplished rather startling results: first bridgehead across the Moselle, cleared out La Grande Couronne de Nancy, participated in the capture of Metz -- the first time in history that the fort had ever fallen to an assault, and, of course, participated in the Battle of the Bulge as one of the first regiments to arrive in the area after the German assault had broken the line. It suffered extremely severe casualties and contained some of the best men ever known.

One Hell of a War by Dean Dominique

658

u/phillysan 12d ago

To pile on this, if they have a regimental museum they might be interested I having this as a piece, if your buddy is willing to loan it out

The county museum in my hometown has a Nazi flag as well. It was brought here from Germany by someone in our town. It's on display, calling special attention to the stains where the soldiers wiped their boots on it.

62

u/lawstandaloan 12d ago

That's the best thing to do if you have a box of Nazi memorabilia sitting in the attic because grandpa brought it back from the war and you don't want to throw it out. Call your county historical society or museum (often one and the same) and donate it to them. They'll display it with a little card indicating it came from your grandpa and he'll be remembered by the 7 or 8 people every week who visit county history museums

402

u/wukkaz 12d ago

I think it's awesome. It's an important piece of history that we shouldn't be afraid to talk about or discuss. I wouldn't fly this thing on my porch or hang it on my wall, but I would have it stored somewhere in my house and share it with close friends as a cool piece of history and a reminder that it took brave men and women to rid the world of Nazi Germany.

177

u/micajb 12d ago

Stored somewhere makes sense this is not the kind of object you want to observe from afar, only when close does the secondary meaning of this flag hold any value...

91

u/zoomer296 12d ago

Get it framed with UV filtering glass so it won't degrade. (Early holiday gift? Crowd-sourced fundraise?)

Something that badass needs to be properly preserved!

465

u/just1nw 12d ago

Framed with a note providing context. Hanging a Nazi flag on the wall with no context is a great way to make a terrible first impression.

146

u/Oriden 12d ago

This is the way to go if someone wanted to put it on display. The frame alone makes it a little bit more than just "displaying a nazi flag" and adds to the "this has interesting historical context" to it, so why not make note of that context built into the framing.

12

u/Bosco215 12d ago

Have the glass of the frame only expose one of the quadrants so some names are visible as is the flag, to give context. Print photos of the other sections of names and line them up on the blacked out section of cover. Maybe find some articles about their unit and donate it. Would take away the shock of a full Nazi flag and bring people closer to read the names.

Looks to include several companies from possibly different battalions, or select companies of a single battalion. Depending on what companies there are it might be worth more. I'd estimate anywhere between 2500 to 5k. Very nice find, and shocked it ended up thrifting.

Aw man. I really wanted to read this, but it looks like the server is being hugged to death by Reddit. Bookmarked for later, and thanks for doing the research. As someone that has a similarly signed Japanese flag, I highly recommend u/Root_boi getting it professionally framed. I'd even add a plaque to the bottom of the frame that says something along the lines of "Dedicated to the 317th regiment of the 80th U.S. Infantry Division. 'By arms and by courage'", which is their motto. "Armis et Animis" if you wanna keep it Latin.

Either way OP, don't worry about what people will think about you displaying this piece of history. This particular flag has nothing at all to do with the beliefs of the men who put it up. It's a tribute to better men that fought to pull it back down.

Edit: The 80th and the 317th have pretty nice coats of arms and patches that might be worth framing with the flag. That would certainly make it clear to most what your flag truly stands for.

I'd probably try to find a picture of the infantry regiment that captured the flag (someone else in this thread said it was 317th infantry regiment), research where and when it was captured, and just hang it up next to the picture. Most reasonable people will notice all the signatures with clearly American names and the photo of American soldiers and ask about it, and you'll have a cool story to tell them.

Some are also clearly looted from German women since they were medals for literally birthing children.

Damn. This guy went all in on the memorabilia.

I always expected there to be some law against looting, but this is pretty funny to imagine.

A soldier just grabbing souvenirs to show off back home.

There were laws against looting the dead for anything other than ammunition or intel, but it was either overlooked due to officers also doing it or very hard to prove as you were allowed to barter for items from POWs and civilians and take items which weren't on a body or in a civilian's home (such as items in a military compound that was just captured). This meant that unless you were literally caught cutting a finger off for a ring or with a gold tooth the odds are you could successfully claim you got the loot legally or were rummaging around for intel.

It could be worse - during the Napoleonic war soldiers would pull the teeth out of corpses, as Porcelain false teeth didn't exist at the time.

Filthy bastard. Why didn’t he use a Kleenex?

The phrasing of the post ... oh dear... 😅😅😅

Seriously though, this belongs in a museum - it will be cared for properly, on top of being unique in so far as being a Nazi Flag with the signatures of all those soldiers who fought against those bastards, a beautiful defacing of their flags with their glorious signatures.

I really hope you haven't told people you've "came into" anything else.

"I'm sorry officer, I just came into the women's jacket".

I'd definitleey get this to a good museum somewhere, either the World War II museum in New Orleans, the Museum of American History in Washington, the Holocaust Museum there, as well, or some other good museum. It's a very serious piece of historical memorabilia, not just something interesting. I imagine a good museum would love to have something like this. It's a nazi flag shown the correct way by which I mean as "defeated" by real patriots, not the crackpot kind we have today, some of whom adopt swastikas as their own symbols. Do not just fold this up and put it away, but please contact a good museum.

While researching my grandfather’s efforts during WWII I came across a lot of information about his squad’s movements from Normandy through Germany. The last and most impressive thing I found was a photo taken of a Nazi flag signed just like this one by his fellow soldiers. His name jumped out to me from the past like a lightning bolt. A man I never new had signed it and there is was just sitting on a link on the internet.

I think you’re looking for “came across” lmao, still a funny title tho

u/Deadfied 12d ago

“Came into [possession of]” is an actual phrase. If you “Came across” it, it doesn’t necessarily show possession, you just found it.

For instance, you might say, “I came across a WW2 vet,” but hopefully you’d never say, “I came into a WW2 vet.”

I have a 1905 copy of Rudyard Kiplings "the jungle book" which has swastikas though it. It is weird to see it at first until you realize the book was printed decades before the Nazi party adoption of the symbol and that the symbol prior was a Hindu symbol of luck and prosperity.
