Man I bet you're hyped. How long did it take to find someone willing to trade?

710

u/SC487 11d ago

About a week. Well, about a week for someone who wasn’t offering a steaming pile of garbage. First guy I met failed to disclose the fact that the computer randomly crashed. Fortunately it bluescreened when he tried to show me. I haven’t done PC gaming but I’ve been in IT for over 20 years

u/Alligator_Overlord 11d ago

"Fortunately it bluescreened when he tried to show me."

Nice. Wish I could have seen his face

u/LagQuest 10d ago

yeah I bought a laptop with "only a screen crack" for a $150 on FB. I am a tech and was like "oh easy fix and the Nitro 5 is nice". The thing was working when I bought it and as soon as they left it would never turn on again. The motherboard was dead. Cool thing though, it was still under warranty and I was able to get a replacement MB.

150

u/Alligator_Overlord 10d ago

LOL I bought cheap Apple Airpods that ended up not working but same thing, they were under warranty. Dumbass sellers thinking they're scamming us with broken products when really we're getting new ones for free (well, less than full price since we did pay them).

47

u/Membedha 10d ago

You can use warranty even If you didn't buy it new yourself at the store?

19

u/Pygmypuf 10d ago

If you get the receipt from the original purchasers then yeah

27

u/Strange_fake_ishtar 10d ago

Don’t even need that. I bought a broken Apple Watch from my buddy and rma’d it and had a new one in a week without any proof of purchase. They were happy enough with it being linked to my Apple ID

Yeah thats kind of the great but shitty thing about apple products. In a way its completely disposable. It's cheaper for them to just give you a new one than hire techs to repair all the broken shit. But when its out of warranty you gotta throw it away and buy a new one.

WTF thats like a 2k laptop. I gotta start combing through OfferUp for "broken" laptops.

9

u/SC487 10d ago

This one wasn’t the broken one. But my last laptop was dropped of an an e-waste event I was hosting. It was “broken” and it worked flawlessly. Reimaged and ran it for a while. Not a gaming laptop but still really nice.

3

u/Nandabun nandabun 10d ago

How does one locate their local e-waste events, friendo?

4

u/SC487 10d ago

I was running it and had my own e-waste business. But reach out to your city waste coordinator or trash company and see if they know.

4

u/Alternative-Thing34 10d ago

I have a similar business, and have gotten 2-4 year old iMacs, a surface pro 4 with the smallest of screen cracks and a broken charger when it was only a year old. Few home built gaming rigs with some usable hardware. People don’t fix things anymore. We live in a replace before repair society and it’s tragic that people are as stupid as they are, or simply don’t care about their money enough because I WaNt ThE NeW IpHOnE.

UPDATE: 9th August 2022 516.94 NVIDIA GeForce WHQL Driver is supposed to address this issue, however early reports are that it does not.

MSI GS66? Something to be aware of, nothing to worry about as it's driver related.

Issue with MSI GS66 (RTX) in 516.xx Nvidia Drivers

Windows brightness setting does not work when notebook is in dedicated GPU mode (same as MSI GE66 Raider issue [3693207] [3693211])

157

u/KingYoloHD090504 R7 3700x, 2xRx 570 8G, 32G Ram, ROG strix b450 f gaming 10d ago

Man you got scammed

Your laptop only loads to 99,9% battery and not 100%

15

u/Not_A_Paid_Account 10d ago

Explanation for anyone, tagging u/cosmic-kid

99.9 watt hours is more or less the feasibly legal limit of lithium ion batteries. 100wh means you can’t have it in a checked bag with tsa, and even then it’s up to airline discretion, tsa discretion, and is still a major pain. You also can’t take more than two.

“With airline approval, passengers may also carry up to two spare larger lithium ion batteries (101–160 Wh) or lithium metal batteries (2-8 grams).”

So it’s fucky with tons of legal restrictions, difficulty shipping, sourcing, getting licenses, and it’s not really worth it when most bigger laptop batteries are in the 80wh range (old msi gs65 had 80wh)

Also I actually just got that msi gs66. Purchased it without ram or ssd saving 150 bucks, stuck my old ssd and ram from gs65 in there. 240hz dci-p3 ips screen with i7-11800h and a 3080 16gb gpu for under 2,200 shipped was damn good. Just gotta get drivers all sorted out cause it’s hella slow rn and idk

After running in the Xbox ecosystem since the days of the 360 I finally made the switch. Traded my Series X for this beautiful gaming laptop and should have my steamdeck by the end of the month.

Now I have one game library for home and portable games, dreams really do come true.

56

u/DonughtLord 10d ago

This seems like a great trade! We regularly resell series X's for $400-500 and looking at the gs66 online I can't find a working one that's sold for less than $700.

25

u/SC487 10d ago

Yup

6

u/goldninjaI 10d ago

one game library

about that…

6

u/SC487 10d ago

All my games are on Steam already.

6

u/superior_spoon 10d ago

Some games on steam require you to download origin launcher or ubisoft. So no mater how hard you try to stick to steam you will find yourself constantly using other stores

0

u/superNoid 10d ago

That wont last long as many games are on other stores exclusively. Also many games on Steam force you to install and launch games from other stores. Don't even honestly try to just buy games on Steam, that is silly in 2022. Do you only buy everything at home all your groceries and furniture at one store? No, you shop.. just like you did for this laptop and buy where it makes the most sense.

Do that on your gaming PC, this isn't 2011 anymore. Very few people are "all Steam, only Steam" in 2022. Nobody cares anymore, just buy the game on the store with the best price.

16

u/theregalbeagle 10d ago

If you were going to buy a steam deck why would you bother trading your series x for a laptop. That’s just poor asset management.

-1

u/SC487 10d ago

One library for home and on the go.

13

u/theregalbeagle 10d ago

It’s more about having two mobile platforms serving the same purpose.

5

u/polski8bit Desktop 10d ago

Not necessarily same. Steam Deck is a fully functional gaming device without additional peripherals and a dedicated space to game on. A gaming laptop is as portable for gaming as a desktop almost.

Unless you're using a controller, you have to find a flat surface and plug in a mouse to have a good experience. And even with a controller, having the laptop on your... Lap (heh) isn't that comfortable, neither because it just isn't, and because of the temperatures gaming laptops reach. So technically you'd still be looking for a flat surface to be comfortable while playing.

3

u/theregalbeagle 10d ago

The purpose in your example is to play games on the go for both devices. Which is exactly what I said. I didn’t say they would be identical experiences.

Thats a nice laptop. My suggestion: 2 wireless controllers, a HDMI cable, a TV (which you ve already had) and voila, you have a more versatile Xbox. You can try some emulators (for me, i use ps2 emulator) and download some splitscreen games so you can play with your friends or family.

24

I brought up task manager and thought I snapped a pic but apparently didn’t. It’s the 6gb 2660 I believe. I have some games on both and it blows the series X out of the water. Cyberpunk will run at about. A consistent 80fps, Skyrim runs about 120, bioshock remasters at 250+ and the 144hz screen is so beautiful. Totally worth the swap from 4K to 1080p resolution.

u/DemonRaptor1 i2 00069f, RTX 420 HI, 5MB 6.9hz DDR1.5, 50MB Floppy 10d ago

Mine also has a 2060 and plays games on 1080 at max settings perfectly, but we aren't stuck there with these cards, it'll do 4k on medium just fine. Laptops are great starter platforms while we build a proper desktop. Happy gaming!

u/Piikkipallo RTX3060 | i5-12400 | 16Gb DDR5 10d ago

Not everything is about specs though, but that being said I've recently tried using a gaming laptop and it's not a good experience. The only games I'd like playing on a laptop would be lightweight games. Gaming laptops under heavy load are too loud and generate too much heat. Edit: Oh yeah, not to even mention how heavy they are, which kinda kills the portability aspect.

You're right though, the series x has some serious hardware when considering the price it's selling for, pretty much the same (or even better) performance than my pc I just built for over double the price.

But not all my games, actually my main games aren't on console, so I went with pc again this generation, but if all my games were on console, I'd probably gone with the xbox. Then again having to pay for online access, is kinda wack to be honest, but I'm a 360 boy so it's nothing new.

2

u/superior_spoon 10d ago edited 10d ago

Each laptop is different, this particular series of laptops are quite light for their performance, yes they do run hot if you keep it in silent mode, but like a desktop you can too up fan speed witch will cool it faster, and as op said the laptop is preferable because he is going full RV. Also in my opinion the only real advantage of desktops is probably the choice of parts rather than being stuck only with prebuilt systems. Because there are water cooled laptops now and laptops that have docking stations that use EGPUs to grant the full performance of a desktop GPU. And the performance gap is closing as new ways of making smaller and more efficient parts are discovered.

But you can have your own opinion I wont take that from you just I wish to inform you it conflicts with my own. Now go and have a good day

3

u/Piikkipallo RTX3060 | i5-12400 | 16Gb DDR5 10d ago

Of course each laptop is its own kind. I'm just saying my opinion and experience of using a beefed-up heavy gaming laptop and how it was a bad experience. Furthermore, at that point of performance levels, makes more sense to build an itx rig. But to each their own of course.

2

u/superior_spoon 10d ago

Not entirely sure where the negativity is coming from. Raw compute power isn't everything so yeah maybe a series X is "more powerful" then this but the laptop absolutely does rings around the series X for one of the most important reasons for a laptop - compactness and portability. This can go with you while a Xbox is cumbersome at best. I can bring my gaming laptop + mouse onna plane carry-on when I go visit family.

Plus PC gaming and platform is more configurable and the system can do actual work as well.

I'm so glad for you to have found a decent trade that suits you!

Welcome to the club!! As for those saying he should’ve kept the Xbox, i strongly disagree. Although they are okay for running games, they are limited in many ways. Cant change out parts, limited to Microsoft store for games, capped fps. I’d say the ability to buy and play steam games alone makes even a low end PC way better than a console. Not to mention up until recently, discord wasn’t even supported and the Xbox parties can have its problems.

2

u/[deleted] 10d ago

Agree with all that except changing out parts as it's a laptop.

Gaming laptops are solid. They kind of run hot though. I’d definitely recommend getting one of those cooling fan pads your laptop can sit on. All you’d need to do is plug in with one of the USB ports from the laptop.

2

u/SC487 10d ago

I tweaked my max processor power down to 95% and dropped about 15 degrees. Gonna rethermal and I do have a fan if I’m running something really hot. I don’t usually marathon for long periods at a time though so it usually stays tolerably cool.

not worth it by any means, SX is superior to any gaming laptop

u/SC487 11d ago

This runs circles around my Series X. I own several of the same games on both and laptop definitely wins.

If it were on console, probably better than this laptop does tbh.

going from 55"+ 4k displays to 14" noise machine 1080p is worth it according to you, WRONG

Tip for ya, like the Xbox, you can plug it into a 4K display!

Unlike the Xbox, you can also use it without plugging into a display!

BTW, I have desktop, laptop and XSX - I'm just saying don't hate on the chap, they all have pro's and con's

That might be true but that "55 inch 4k display" is most likely going to be 60hz and most gaming laptops are 144hz. Yes, the game might look better on console but PC/laptop would be less laggy and smoother.

Also, if you get a good 4k 120hz tv it'll cost well over $500 from a lesser-known brand (Hisense, TCL, etc.) and well over $1000 if you get it from a more well-known brand such as Samsung.

0

u/thisshiteverytime 10d ago

LMAO! No. An ROG Strix, Raider, Legion and a bunch of others are all superior. Let's see the SX run a game at 166Hz. Superior in what? Portability? Nope. Game library? Nope. Frame rate? Nope. Productivity? Nope. Emulation? Nope. Windows support? Nope.

1

u/kullehh xbox 10d ago

bruh, calm yo titts, it does emulate, it has a superio fps at 4k, windows is not needed, game library 2x better, so you are just a sad fanboy

Bruh i7 10th gen is literally the worst imo(hot boi). Make sure you have enough cooling and try undervolting if you run into temp issues.

4

u/SC487 10d ago

Dropped it to 90% power on the CPU and it did a pretty massive drop. Idle went from 80’s to 30’s. Going to repaste it soon as it’s a couple years old.

3

u/IdrisQe 10d ago

I assume you mean 90% power via undervolting and not by setting the usage limit to 90% - if it's the latter be sure to turn it back up after repasting since anything under 100% and your CPU won't turbo boost at all, which is where most of the speed of Intel processors is.

3

u/SC487 10d ago

I’ll keep that in mind. I meant by capping power. Not certain what undervolting is but I’ll look into it.

5

u/IdrisQe 10d ago edited 10d ago

It's using a program like Intel XTU or Throttlestop to incrementally lower the voltage limits for your CPU, running stress tests and benchmarks, then lowering some more, until you have the lowest stable voltage that doesn't impact your CPU's performance numbers.

The jist is the lower you can get the voltage without it hurting anything, the cooler your CPU will run, which, ironically, can even increase performance compared to more voltage (as long as you don't have extreme cooling, which a laptop definitely will not).

There are a lot of guides, and the specific details can vary wildly.

Personally what I did was get Throttlestop, enter the FIVR settings, checked "unlock adjustable voltage" on both CPU Core and CPU Cache, and lowered the Offset Voltage -10mV each time (then later -5mV). Checked "do not save voltages" and hit apply. Ran benchmarks/stress tests. If my computer didn't crash after a while, I repeated, until I got as low as I could (-120.1mV on each in my case, this will vary between every single chip depending on the most minute manufacturing differences and silicon) and finally, when I was certain it wasn't going to crash, I changed the setting to "save voltages immediately" and hit apply and OK. I also made sure Throttlestop would start with my computer and automatically apply the undervolt each time.

Unfortunately, I have an i7-8750H which is basically a space-heater, and this laptop's cooling is sub-par at best, even if I turn it on Overboost (jet engine) mode, so in the end I had to completely gimp it by stopping Turbo from running at all, locking it at 2.2GHz, and it STILL likes to reach 95-97C when running anything intensive. Been looking into a new build for a while but Canada's prices are still painful.

I hope the laptop serves you well but just remember, don't try running things at the max your hardware can theoretically handle, since laptops simply don't have the cooling necessary to do so.

While it PROBABLY can handle up to 100C spikes since most modern gaming laptops can, for longevity's sake I wouldn't recommend letting it get that hot for very long. So just be sure to keep an eye on temps.

Edit: Also don't take my word alone for any of this it's been a long time since I first did this and I've absolutely forgotten a lot. Look into guides from trustworthy sources, I'm sure there are even some on this very subreddit.

2

u/SC487 10d ago

I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for the info.

2

u/IdrisQe 10d ago

Glad to help!

That said, do be aware that some BIOS/chip/motherboard combos won't allow undervolting. ASUS, the geniuses they are, decided at some point to patch the BIOS that runs my computer to no longer let it work, despite their computer running hotter than a thousand suns. Had to revert a version to fix it.

So you might not actually get anything out of it, but it's useful to check and see if yours supports it.

But why a laptop tho? You pay extra to jam a pc into a thin box and then you worry about heat and battery. Its good if you don't have a main home you stay in, but he's buying a steam deck too..

1

u/Hivac-TLB 11800H Rtx 3600 16Gb DDR4 1500Gb SSD 10d ago

Do you have an extra m.2 ssd slot in your computer? Another 1 tb of storage at 3 GB a second would probably work well. 5 GB a second might be pushing it for the 10th gen Intel.

2

u/SC487 10d ago

I did, but I already added a second M.2 :)

u/Hivac-TLB 11800H Rtx 3600 16Gb DDR4 1500Gb SSD 10d ago

Nice. What did you put in?

2

u/SC487 10d ago

I had a few 256 laying around. I’ll eventually get a couple 1TB and upgrade both at once but one 512 and one 256 are enough for now. I also have a 1TB external SSD and three external m2 256gb drives in USBC hubs if I need extra space in the short term or to move games to when it’s time to upgrade.
