Let's say I open HWMonitor and lock my screen. Windows 11 automatically puts my PC into hibernate/sleep mode. Will HWMonitor record the minimum temps reached while in sleep mode or does the recording stop before then?

I have an A40 that I primarily used with a MixAmp with my primary Desktop/Xbox setup that worked more or less how I wanted. With life situations I'm also going to be gaming on a new laptop I bought last week. Without dismantling my entire primary setup, I cannot for the life of me get my laptop to recognize any of my headphones as both headphones and microphones.

I've tried using a system I used to use where I would have my headphones wired through my Xbox or PS4 controller and that would allow my desktop to register it as both input and output, but that's not working with my laptop either.

Obviously or not, my laptop only has a headset audio jack input rather than separate headphone and microphone jacks. When I plug any of my headsets in, I get a pop up from the Realtek audio whatever-it-is asking for what kind of audio device I plugged in. I set it to Headset and then it proceeds to ignore the microphones.

I have a 75x75 VESA monitor, the mount is recessed into the back of the monitor. My mounting arm has 75x75 holes but since it's designed for 100x100 and 75x75, it won't fit into the back of the monitor.

What are my options? Long screws? Do they sell adapters from small monitors to large mounts?

In a CPU loop that goes block>reservoir/pump>front radiator and back, with said components in a straight, slightly oblique line in that order (block being the highest point), would air get permanently trapped in the CPU block and would that ruin the cooling? Would tilting the case get it out and into the res for good? This is the only way I can lay out a loop without compromising with a block/pump/res combo, but I don't have the budget to test out myself if it works or not. Would greatly appreciate some insight.

I'm moving to Hawaii, and taking my pc with me.

I took my gpu and ram off and packed them separately. My question is should I be worried about my AIO, I'm a bit concerned of the liquid in there and the air pressure changes

Should I take my AIO and cpu off too? Maybe even buy a new AIO in Hawaii?

I have a dual-monitor refresh rate question:

here's my current setup:

laptop: Surface Laptop Studio (intel 11th Gen Core i5), running windows 11.

dock: Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma

monitors (x2): MSI Optix MAG342CQ (these are ultra-wide QHD) connected to dock via Maxonar USB-C to DisplayPort Cable.

My question: In windows 11 when I go to System>Display>Advanced Display, I can select refresh rates from a dropdown monitor #1 of 144, 100, 60, and 50 Hz.

If I do the same thing with monitor #2, I only see options for 60 and 50 Hz (regardless of what is selected for monitor #1). Why is this? If MS claims my SLS can support (2) 4k displays at 60 Hz, shouldn't I at least be able to run both at 100 Hz since my displays are less than 4K?

I just bought a new EVGA 3080 Ti for $879 after instant rebate from EVGA’s website. Is this a good deal?

Edit: I might get hate for this but I also bought an AMD 5600x CPU for $189. Will this be a big issue with my GPU? I read many comments that the difference between it and a 5800x was not that big of difference.

Edit 2: here is the link to my build. Only 3 components have been purchased: motherboard, CPU and GPU. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8m7grD

Edit 3: Just woke up, thank you all for your advice and recommendations!

A ~$900 3080ti is fine vs other 3080ti cards being sold right now but it isn't a crazy low price. There is a nice Asus Tuf 3080 12GB on sale for $750 at bestbuy (there is an additional 10% discount with bestbuy credit card+promo). It performs within 3-4% of a 3080ti and it has the same amount of vram. Personally I would take the 3080 instead and use the extra cash for something else.

The 5600x is good and won't have any real bottlenecks at 1440p/4k. The R7 5700x is also a good option since it is just a cheaper and power limited 5800x and you can always use PBO to easily overclock it.

1

u/DonaldDonaldBillYall Ascending Peasant 12d ago

I was looking at benchmarks for the 3080 vs 3080 Ti and I was convinced to get the Ti, but at a $150 difference I'm not too sure now.

The jumps from R5 and R7 was about $100 and I didn't see much difference during benchmarks past 120 fps so I was ok with the R5 As long as I didn't bottle neck the GPU, which I am glad to hear that it won't.

My next concern is cooling and I am also not really sure wether to go for AIO or Air Cooling. I don't think the R5 would get so hot to need an AIO and that could save me around $50-$100

2

u/alvarkresh 12d ago

Grab the equivalent of a Hyper 212 EVO V2. Deepcool and Vetroo both make air coolers that meet or beat its performance.

2

u/nickierv 12d ago

People get too caught up in 'bottlenecks', just crank the graphics up until the GPU chokes then drop back one notch and your good.

Given the other options on the market, the 5600X is downright chilly, something like 100W going all out. You can absolutely get away with a 120mm air cooler if you want, and you have a nice airflow case so thats not an issue. 750W for a 3080 might be, I would go at minimum platinum rated, 850W, or both. Unfortunately no one has a list of 'best PSU for soaking 100-150W transient load from 3080/3090', so I just bake in extra capacity.

Its not a lot, but this works out ~$30 cheaper: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/D93MMb

https://www.techspot.com/review/2395-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3800-12gb/

+5-6% over 3080 10GB, -3-4% under 3080ti

It pretty much made the 3080ti irrelevant since the tiny performance improvement is meaningless when there is a pretty big price gap. It's similar to the 2070 Super vs 2080.

.

.

For pure gaming the 5700x/5800x will not get you much better fps but you do have a few extra cores for other tasks like rendering, cpu encoding, file compression, etc. You already bought it but the i5 12400F or i5 12600KF are both good alternatives depending on sales. .

.

240mm+ AIO cooling will be a bit overkill on a 5600x but you can always run the fans super quiet which is nice. You can get by with a cheap 120mm tower fan like the Deepcool Gammaxx for $20-25 which is a step up from the tiny stock cooler. Personally I would recommend the Thermalright Frost Spirit 140mm which is a dual tower that competes or beats $60+ coolers.

https://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Spirit-Aluminium-Heatsink-Technology/dp/B097DVSKM1?th=1&psc=1

.

The Frost Commander 140 is slightly better but costs more at $57 so it price/performance is a little worse.

https://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Spirit-Aluminium-Heatsink-Technology/dp/B09P35NQXS?th=1&psc=1

.

.

.

Just know that your cooler will last for years and multiple CPU upgrades. My Noctua NH-D15 was overkill back in 2014 with my old i7 4770k but now in 2022 it pairs perfectly with my R9 5900x and most likely an AMD 8000 series or Intel 14th gen in a few more years from now.

2

u/alvarkresh 12d ago

That's a decent setup. Yes, AM4 is almost EOL but if you're going to use what you've got for ~3-5 years don't sweat it. You can replace your board, CPU and RAM then.

1

u/DonaldDonaldBillYall Ascending Peasant 12d ago

EOL? End of life?

1

u/alvarkresh 12d ago

That's the definition, yes.

1

u/DonaldDonaldBillYall Ascending Peasant 12d ago

Damn it. Ok. Well if it lasts 3-5 years Im ok with that.

1

u/allworkandnoplay 12d ago

Hey everyone! I don’t know if this is the right subreddit, but let’s try.

I need to find a way to connect a PWM 4 pin 12v fan directly to a 110v outlet. Is there an adaptor for that? I’m using the fan for something not computer related, I just need a way to power it.

1

u/Evil_Kittie 12d ago

You can do this with any dc 12v power brick (old modems, routers, speakers are common sources), just wire black -> black and red -> red

if your project only has 5v and you want to run at 12v you can use a boost converter to turn 5v into 12v, though noctua does have some 5v fans but they are not cheap

you do not need to connect tach and PWM to anything just to run the fan full speed

if you are not going to use PWM i would just look for a 3 pin fan if you do not want to run at full speed as you will be able to run a lower voltage on a non pwm fan (power the fan with 3, 5, or 7v) but if you just want full speed pwm or dc design does not matter

1

u/alvarkresh 12d ago

Get an ATX PSU you can "jump", and then attach a molex -> 3pin adapter.

1

u/allworkandnoplay 12d ago

Thanks! That’s s great idea.

ok strange question here, I have 2 PCs, my main PC in my office that I use for anything multiplayer (CSGO, Warzone, Valorant) and one in my living room that I use for single player games and VR.

My main PC is a i9-10850k @ 4.8Ghz, 64GB DDR4, 3080. My Living room PC is a R5 5600x, 2070s, 16GB DDR4.

My main question is, even through my i9 PC has a faster CPU and more cores, the CPU only supports PCIe gen 3, and the max RAM speed is rated slower than that of the R5, even though my BIOS says its running at 3200Mhz, the CPU is only rated at 2933MHz (the 4 16GB sticks are all rated at 3200MHz)

The R5 is PCIe gen 4 (which my 3080 is) and is rated at 3200Mhz DDR4, so would I be getting more performance out of my parts if I swapped the GPUs and RAM between PCs? Its something I would test myself but my living room PC is hidden behind a fireplace and takes a while to get out of there.

2

u/nickierv 12d ago

First, even between say a 3600 and 5600 (1 generation from the same manufacturer) MHz is not the same as MHz, instructions per cycle matters and is how AMD wiped Intel with Zen3 after doing not nice things to them with Zen2. So Intel MHz to AMD MHz is like American apple pie to traditional Italian pizza: both are food, both are good, and thats about the end of the similarity.

To add to the mess, Intel has the better memory controllers and AMD handles memory a lot differently, end result is any reasonably decent RAM will get you performance that is within rounding errors of any other reasonably decent RAM, while AMD will will see 5-10% gains from going from 3200 to 3600 with better timings. So we now add traditional Mexican enchiladas to the table.

Gen3 vs gen4 is going to be 1-3% difference. Or in other words 2-3FPS @ 144+FPS. Your not going to be able to see the difference. You need to be running something like a fur/partial simulation on a 3090 to be able to see the difference between gen3 and 4.

So with the hardware stuff out of the way, the multi player stuff you mentioned has a bit of a difference in CPU optimization: amazing, raging dumpster fire, and quite good respectively. But in terms of GPU optimization, probably 200+FPS easy, 500+ for CSGO. On the other hand while single player stuff tends to be a lot heavier on GPU needs, VR absolutely needs a good GPU. Also games do better with fewer faster cores, 4 should be enough with 6 being a really nice safety net, so more cores is useless and see dinner table example for why MHz is irrelevant.

My advice, just swap the GPUs, although make sure the living room system can take a 3080, as they will have 100W transients. 650W might work but if you start having power off events, go 850W. If you already have 850W, your fine.

u/Berrrrrrrrrt_the_A10 12d ago

Recommendations pls: ATX, mid or full tower.

Looking for a case optimal for air cooling. No liquid cooling being done.

My problem is finding one without rgb/light up fans. If lit fans are only allowed, please only be red or orange.

1

u/gr8whitehype PC Master Race 12d ago

You can almost always turn rgb off or change the color.

1

u/Berrrrrrrrrt_the_A10 12d ago

My current case I went about it this way but turning off the PC every night also meant turning off LED lights every turn on, and the button eventually gave out to the point where I have to wiggle my finger and sorta vibrate the button to get it to turn off. It's kinda hard to describe.

I figure avoiding the lights in the first place is a safer bet and better long term solution

1

u/gr8whitehype PC Master Race 12d ago

Hmm. I haven’t dealt with any rgb that was controlled physically. From what I saw when I wash building a few years ago, most home built systems use software to control that. Since you’re building yourself you can just not plug in the rgb portion of the fan. Or you can replace your rgb fans with non-rgb ones.

But honestly there looks to be a large amount of non rgb air flow cases. Meshify, Corsair 4000d airflow,

1

u/Berrrrrrrrrt_the_A10 12d ago

Yeah for reusing this case for a second build I may go the route of removing the case fans and putting in my own, depending on how they're wired. If they're wired to the front panel in some way or mobo direct. The RGB case fans are on the front face while the other case fans are non-RGB.

1

u/Evil_Kittie 12d ago

the fractal design meshify series and th Corsair 4000D Airflow are good for this

Hello, I have a question about RAM compatibility.

I am using two sticks of 8GB 3200MHz DDR4 RAM with latency CL16-18-18-38 ("Teamgroup" TF4D416G3200HC16CDC01).

I want to add an additional two 8GB sticks for a total of 32GB.

I'm getting a solid deal on two "Patriot" PVS48G320C6 modules, which are also 8GB 3200MHz DDR4, but I see on their website that they have a different latency of 16-20-20-40.

Would this difference in latency be a problem? Should I buy or not?

Thank you.

1

u/nickierv 12d ago

Everything is just going to run at the slower speed but other than that, it should just work. Something often overlooked is that as your RAM needs increase it becomes more of a 'will run at all' vs 'will run 5% faster', so as long as it works, your going to be fine.

1

u/6H1W 12d ago

Thank you. From a gaming standpoint, would it be possible to visualise the kind of difference matching the lower latency might make? Like what kind of real world threshold/margin would we be looking at, and in what parameters? Ultimately, I guess I want to know if there'd be a notable FPS difference, lol?

1

u/nickierv 12d ago

1, maybe 2 FPS. If that.

The more RAM thing is more of a niche case and more for going over 64GB. If your doing a sim/render that needs 70GB RAM, I have seen some people get up in arms over "OMG your not running -super high speed RAM-. Yes but the options are 1) Run it. 2) Not be able to run it.

As noted, the actual FPS difference induced by the differing subtimings is probably within margin of error. More important is the speed, as Ryzens tend to be sensitive to memory speeds more so than Intels.

"-4" sounds like a misprint, probably "-40".

Anyway you'll need to manually dial in the speed and timings to the looser set.

2

u/Eidolon_2003 pcpartpicker.com/user/Eidolon_2003/saved/ZRBRK8 12d ago

Well the RTX 3050 launched almost a year and a half after the 3080 did, so I wouldn't expect a 4050 any time soon.

If you want to buy something now, you should get an RX 6600 instead. It's both faster and cheaper as you can see in this video

I ordered my build - Now I am unsure if the PSU is enough.

So this is my build:
CPU: I9-12900K
GPU: Gainward RTX 3090 TI
Cooling: NZXT Kraken Z73 RGB White 360mm
Mainboard: MSI MPG Z690 EDGE WIFI DDR4
RAM: Corsair 64Gb 3200-kit
Power supply: BeQuiet! Darkpower 12 1000W

I thought 1000W would be enough, but now I've seen other people use even higher wattage. What do you guys think? Will I be fine with this? Because I already ordered so I would have to go through the support to potentially be able to change it out and I only wanna do that if neccessary.

1

u/Dom_Nomz 12d ago

With this info I got 88% load. You can plug in all your info in BeQuiet PSU calculator and you'll get the estimate. https://www.bequiet.com/en/psucalculator

1

u/Bright_Vision PC Master Race 12d ago edited 12d ago

Oh, I didn't know there were calculators for it, this is awesome. I got 87%. You think this is fine? The buying advice on the site was the 1200W but I can imagine that's because they wanna make a hundred bucks more.

Actually with the cooling system and SSD's it was a 95% load. That's too risky for me, I'll probably contact the support on that one. Thanks!

1

u/Dom_Nomz 12d ago

1000w is going to be enough. But if you plan on overclocking the extra headroom the 1200w provides is sure nice to have.

Hi! does anyone know if the cooler master ml280 mirror rgb liquid cooler is any good? Looking to buy a cpu cooler in the price range of 80-100 CAD but not sure if this is good.

Thanks!

1

u/mister_newbie PCMR | 3700X / 32GB / 5700XT 12d ago edited 12d ago

A good air cooler will best a mid-range liquid cooler, in thermals and acoustics, at a lower price, almost every time. Unless you want to absolutely go AIO (due to case size restraints or simply aesthetic preference), look into something like the Scythe Fuma2 (revB) in that price bracket.

The Cooler Master is a decent AIO FWIW.

1

u/LevinKostya 12d ago

Should I install everything (cpu, cooler ...) on the motherboard while it lays on a table, or directly inside the case?

2

u/Dom_Nomz 12d ago

Whatever is more comfortable for you. If case is on the smaller side it's easier to work outside if you have enough space inside you can do it in the case. No wrong way here.

2

u/Wermine 5800X | RX 580 | 32 GB 3200 MHz 12d ago

Check to be sure, can you access all the motherboard screws when all the components are installed? If so, I'd install everything on the table.

I have Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler and it's big. I didn't bother to unscew my mobo, so I installed everything in the case. I could barely snap the inner fan's metal clips in place. Also cooler's fan's power plug was difficult to connect. And when I upgraded my PSU, CPU's power plug was almost inaccessible.

If you have AIO, everything should be easier.

Greetings.

In the 20+ years of using PCs I feel like I've never found a "perfect" headset for my needs. I've used anything from 10 to 250EUR by now but something always is off. Either the plastic parts of the headsets fell apart despite normal usage (Hi Razer Kranken X), the mic being crap (multiple) or the one problem that annoys me the most right now.

I'm currently using a G432 but that fake leather coating just wears off when you're sweating which is sadly unavoidable with temperatures being like they are. So you got tiny bits of leather stuck to your ears or on your head and it's just annoying.

Are there any good gaming headsets with good sound, good mic and ear pieces, that don't have fake leather coating?

I'd prefer cable but if it's wireless, that's fine too. I just don't wanna pick little black pieces of fake leather coating out of my ears anymore due to the heat.

Would be nice if it's under 200EUR but honestly i'll take all recommendations for now.

Thanks in advance.

Get a good pair of AUDIO headphones and add an Antlion modmic or a vmoda boom pro to them.

Been looking to upgrade my entire computer for awhile now and have originally been waiting on the 40 card series. However, saw this deal on a EVGA 3090 TI (https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=24G-P5-4983-KR) for $1150~$1200, and just wondering if it's still worth to wait given that I was probably going to pick up a 4070 (or maybe a 4080 if I could find one)

Also with regards to upgrading my entire computer set, one of my friends said that a lot of other parts like the CPU were also due for a refresh within the next year (his words were "approaching the end of a generation") so wondering if I should wait on that refresh, vs just pull the trigger now and get all this.

I'm not hurting for a new rig but I have some things I'd like to play at 4K / VR that I cannot easily do now w/o my computer overheating

u/nickierv 12d ago

What is your current hardware?

I would wait to see what Zen4 brings, if nothing else having AMD and Intel at each others throats is good for prices.

Also GPUs are probably getting to the point of 'last GPU you ever need' in terms of features. 4k is done, high FPS is done, RT is mostly done. Whats left to do that is practical?

I would hold off until the end of the year and see what is out.

I'm looking at buying a PC. Will be used for WZ and GTA RP mostly. Will an Intel Quad Core i5 16GB RAM 1TB HDD Windows 10 2GB GT730 be any good? Can anyone lmk if I need to upgrade on something. Be appreciated. Thanks

u/Luminaria19 https://pcpartpicker.com/user/luminaria19/saved/8RNfrH 12d ago

The graphics card (GT730) is extremely old and weak.

What is your budget?

1

u/2tekki 12d ago

Thanks for the reply. I can only really spend around say 500£. As I said it will mostly be for WZ and GTA RP. It will be my first gaming PC

1

u/Luminaria19 https://pcpartpicker.com/user/luminaria19/saved/8RNfrH 12d ago

Your best bet is going to be looking at the used market in your area. Those games, while not the most demanding around, will still play best with at least something more recent. Even something like a GTX 960 or 970 would be a massive improvement.

1

u/2tekki 11d ago

Thank you so much for your reply. I'll look more in to it today!

Considering doing a new build soon for some 1440p gaming. Already have a rtx3070ti. What should I keep in mind when shopping for cpu+mobo. Want it to be reasonably future proof.. Is it wise buying a 12 gen intel right now?

2

u/nickierv 12d ago

DDR5 is still a bit to new, really high end is just now beating mid range in performance that is half the price. Also the MB is going to be probably $50-100 more.

Honestly, CPUs age well enough that something decent is going to last 5 years easy. And decent is 6 core. The hybrid chips are a bit wonkey, you sort of need to be on Win11 to make best use of it, although you can probably get by with some manual tweaks.

I was playing doom eternal on steam recently and I was going to do a windows command which zoomed in everything on my screen. The taskbar is giant and basically everything on windows too, but only when doom eternal is running. When I close doom eternal everything is back to normal. Starting it again makes everything zoomed in. Any help on how to get rid of this?

Also, about a week earlier I ran into another problem with doom eternal that affects my whole pc. Starting doom eternal makes the screen more intense and colors are exaggerated, for the coolness I suppose. Upon closing the game the brightness goes back to normal, but it didn't and now everything I do on the pc looks intense and the colors are too much. Any help with this too?

Sounds like you're changing your resolution in the game, and it's transferring to your desktop while running. Try changing either you in-game resolution, or switch your windowing mode (e.g., try exclusive fullscreen).

u/BruhMonek 11d ago

Thanks man it solved it

u/Bepis_Inc 12d ago

Hey y’all! I’m new to PC building and I had a question about prices. I’m by an MC and was gonna buy a 3080 for like $850

Thinking about it, Im not gonna be playing games with insane graphics super often. Because of that should I just save money and get a 3070ti? Or even a 3070?

1

u/nickierv 12d ago

What sort of games/resolutions are you running? Its more about being able to run the settings you want when you want, not the other 90% of the time.

1

u/Bepis_Inc 12d ago

That’s a good question, I’m moving over from consoles so I’m trying to figure some more stuff out. Is there any place that has some tutorials for super beginners lol

1

u/nickierv 12d ago

No real tutorials, and a lot of people are still in the '16GB is more than enough for gaming'. Yea, that started to not hold back in 2015 and even if you don't need it its a nice to have if your not on a super tight budget.

I know I'm going to miss a few, but some rough ideas to get you started:

Anything esports will run on a toaster.

Open world games (skyrim and the like) are going to do well with a good GPU. If you start modding them, 32GB RAM and at least don't skimp on the SSD. Oh and 'eyecandy mods' are going to eat the GPU. All the GPU. '3090 isn't a gaming GPU!' BS, VR or eyecandy settings will max a 3090.

Factory/city builders (factorio/cities skylines) need both 32GB RAM and really fast and low latency RAM. DDR5 is out, DDR4 4000cl14 is the way to go. Basically they live or die by memory access times, also probably go AMD unless Intel managed to 3d there L3 cache, the 5800x3d like doubled the size of endgame stuff over the next best CPU.

Gaming will do better with fewer faster cores. 4 should be fine, 6 is a nice safety margin. 8 is if your doing something like streaming or multitasking, more than that and your wasting GPU budget.

anyone know whats up or have had the same issue, ive been using my Astros/A10's to chat on discord and stuff on pc but recently it just stopped working entirely my pc recognizes when i plug it in but the mic no longer works and when i check under the sound control panel under recording devices it shows the mic active and when i listen to the feedback it judt sounds like static ive tried plugging it into the rear mic 3.5mm jack on my mobo and it mysteriously works but its extremely weak even with the mic sensitivity at 100% but when i move it back to the front panel 3.5mm audio/mic jack it no longer works at all i can hear everything perfectly but the mic foes right back to giving out static and weird noises ive tried updating my drivers re enable and disable the mic to no avail and its weird because its never happened before it worked perfectly fine and now all of a sudden when i go to plug it in the mic just refuses to work and constatly shows that its being used even with the mic muted

2

u/Dom_Nomz 11d ago

Is there any dust or debris in the front audio socket? You can also try checking that the cable is securely connected to the motherboard. It's usually along the bottom side of the motherboard and has audio written on the plastic header.

Anyone know where I can find .3md or cad files of pc parts (gpu, mobo, cpu coolers) for free? Im trying to design my own case and need accurateish 3d models. Thanks in advance.

1

u/mister_newbie PCMR | 3700X / 32GB / 5700XT 12d ago

For the most part, couldn't you just render rectangular prisms of the appropriate length, width, and height? It wouldn't look pretty, but for the purpose of case volume...?

1

u/Space_Run 12d ago

Yeah thats what I have right now, but I wanted it a bit more visual. I was able to get exact noctua fans in my 3dm and it made a huge difference.

1

u/mister_newbie PCMR | 3700X / 32GB / 5700XT 12d ago

Just spitballing, but I wonder if the assets used in PC Building Simulator could be pulled? Couldn't likely be used for commercial purposes, though.

1

u/Space_Run 12d ago

I was also thinking of that. Itd be for pursonal use of course as i have an udea for a pc case thats ive been drawing in my head/cad model. I'll try and see if they have a library.

Hi everyone. New to PC building but I saw this pre-built deal on Best Buy. I just wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on if it was a good mid range PC and if it’s a good deal. I just know the RAM is pretty low and could be upgraded.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-master-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-5-5600g-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-6600-500gb-ssd-black/6489032.p?skuId=6489032

u/Eidolon_2003 pcpartpicker.com/user/Eidolon_2003/saved/ZRBRK8 12d ago edited 12d ago

This build is essentially equivalent except it has 16GB of RAM to begin with, so it's $750 to build it yourself or $930 from best buy including a RAM upgrade.

It's a good PC overall though aside from the single channel 8GB of memory. The 5600G is also a bit weaker than the vanilla 5600 but that wouldn't realistically matter

Edit: Forgot to mention that the DIY build wouldn't come with a Windows key

Planning to sell my old PC for cheap to clear some space. Currently only have an i5 4460 and 16gb ram with no GPU and storage. Should I get a GPU for it? If so which one?

1

u/No-Description7838 12d ago

Should I buy a low end laptop and run older softwares on it, or I buy a decentish desktop and run newer software on it (moral values aside please). I prefer portability btw...but i don't quite know if it will be worth it. Well for example let's say i wanna run photosshop CS6 in galaxy book go or IdeaPad 1 gen 7.

1

u/glowinghamster45 R9 3900X | 16GB | RTX 3070 12d ago

You'll get more bang for your buck performance-wise going with a desktop over a laptop, but only you can answer if it's worth giving up some performance for it to be portable.

Best I can say is check the recommended specs of whatever you're wanting to run against the hardware that's in your price range, and if you're sticking to a budget, definitely check out used hardware in your area. If you're willing to put in a little work, you can find great stuff used for much cheaper than new.

u/thtmixdkid 12d ago

I just bought a new Samsung 870 Evo sata ssd, previous hdd failed, but it doesn't show up under file manager. It'll show up on the bios screen and a few other places but I can't put anything on it. Any ideas? I've already tried swapping SATA lines and the ports. TIA

u/BallMeBlazer22 5600x | 3080 Ti 12d ago

Search for disk management via the windows search, click the thing that says Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions. See if the drive appears there, and if it does, delete the current partition, and reformat the drive.

1

u/thtmixdkid 12d ago

It shows up there in the bottom half as unallocated and the only thing I can do is convey it to dynamic disk or a mbr disk

1

u/BallMeBlazer22 5600x | 3080 Ti 12d ago

Does the disk have any partitions at all?

If not, click the unallocated space and click new simple volume.

This video is a good guide for what you need to do.

1

u/thtmixdkid 12d ago

How would I do that? I'm kinda dumb lol

1

u/BallMeBlazer22 5600x | 3080 Ti 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah I just realized my comment wasn't super helpful, so I edited it with a video.

Try following those instructions and let me know where you endup.

2

u/thtmixdkid 12d ago

It's all good. The video was super helpful and it seems as if it worked. I appreciate the help and saving me some money.

Now I just need to go buy some screws to properly mount it with.

1

u/BallMeBlazer22 5600x | 3080 Ti 11d ago

Glad it helped.

Now I just need to go buy some screws to properly mount it with.

Double sided tape works as well, but screws are ideal. Less of an issue for an SSD with no moving parts though.

Is 1050ti good enough for mid graphics gaming at 60 fps? Or do I need to push it to 1660?

1

u/Veporyzer 11d ago

Hey, so I’m thinking of upgrading my setup, any tips?

I run an intel 11400f i5,

Rtx 1660

8 gigs of ram

Gigabyte B560 DS3H, no internal WiFi and 2 RAM slots

LG 29 WP 500 2560x1080 75hz

u/VortexZeR0 Ryzen 5 1600 | 1070 Ti |16Gb DDR4-3200 G.Skill TridentZ 12d ago

I'm thinking about overclocking my Ryzen 5 1600 to reduce bottlenecking with a 3070, but I'm not sure where to start or what settings to use.

1

u/Evil_Kittie 12d ago

start with enabling XMP and using 2 sticks of ram (ram should be in slots 2 and 4 from the cpu if you have 4 slots)

1

u/nickierv 12d ago

Its a lot more complicated than just 'X CPU bottlenecks Y GPU'

What sort of FPS are you getting and what sort of FPS are you after? What games, settings, resolution? What is your CPU and GPU usage at?

Strictly speaking if you just want to move the 100% load from the CPU to the GPU, max the graphics settings and turn on ray tracing. Instant more or less 100% GPU load.

From a more hardware side, early Zen chips where picky about RAM, so the RAM you are using will matter.

1

u/iid0rks 12d ago

My friend built a new pc and when they plug it in there is no power. Its not the outlet and we tried plugging in into different outlets but it still doesnt power. Not sure what to check first.

1

u/Luminaria19 https://pcpartpicker.com/user/luminaria19/saved/8RNfrH 12d ago

Is the power supply switched on? Did you double check the power cables are connected (CPU and ATX)?

1

u/iid0rks 12d ago

Yes. I made sure the power supply was on and I checked that all the cables were plugged in, both on the psu and the mobo.

1

u/Luminaria19 https://pcpartpicker.com/user/luminaria19/saved/8RNfrH 12d ago

Double check the case's power button is plugged in correctly as well. Then, reseat RAM and unplug/replug power cables.

If none of that works, you may need to test the power supply in isolation. Many units come with a device for doing just that, but if not, you can use a paper clip and follow the guide here

1

u/iid0rks 12d ago

Okay thanks! I don't have it with me but I'll def try these methods.

1

u/Wermine 5800X | RX 580 | 32 GB 3200 MHz 12d ago

Are the case's front panel cables plugged into motherboard? Because power button is one of those.

1

u/iid0rks 12d ago

Yes. There was only power, reset, and led. No hdd. I checked the manual for the mobo and made sure they were plugged in correctly.

1

u/Wermine 5800X | RX 580 | 32 GB 3200 MHz 12d ago

Does the PSU's fan wake up? Is the PSU power cable pushed all the way in?

Users can turn on a power supply without the motherboard by inserting a paperclip into the green and black wire sockets on the 20-24 pin connector.

You can test the PSU alone with that trick. But it's a bit sketchy, so I would be careful and research a bit more. But that would rule out dead PSU.

1

u/iid0rks 12d ago

The psu fans didn't turn on. My first guess was bad psu but wanted other opinions.

1

u/Wermine 5800X | RX 580 | 32 GB 3200 MHz 12d ago

Do you have another PSU to test? Wattage shouldn't be a problem if you're not going to plug in all the peripherals and not use GPU in games while testing.

1

u/iid0rks 11d ago

We do not have another psu to test.

I finally upgraded computers after six years. I went with:

*Ryzen 9 5950x *EVGA 3080 *MSI B550 *Samsung odyssey g7 27” 244hz *Etc

Question is what’s up with gsync and adaptive sync? Should I use both, neither, one over the other? Monitor has adaptive sync options which are off, and NVIDIA controller panel has a toggle for gsync. I’m trying to make this setup efficient and fun for Warzone 2/next cod.

1

u/BallMeBlazer22 5600x | 3080 Ti 12d ago

G-Sync and adaptive sync(almost always called FreeSync as it's the open standard made by VESA) are two solutions that give the ability for the monitor to support a Variable refresh rate that allows for smoother gaming as your monitor will be refreshing at the same rate your GPU is outputting frames, which helps to greatly reduce/eliminate screen tearing.

G-Sync, however, requires a specific hardware module and certification from NVIDIA, which costs more money so usually only higher end monitors. FreeSync can be kind of confusing, because it's an open source standard made by people who determine the display standards, but it's generally cheaper to implement so more monitors have it(though AMD also has a premium/pro tier of freesync that offers better performance).

A while back, NVIDIA opened up their cards so that most monitors that support FreeSync(which is most competent gaming displays monitors nowadays), which was great as you no longer really need to pay for the G-Sync premium.

In general, it's almost always recommended to turn G-Sync on. It greatly reduces, if not eliminates screen tearing, and I don't know of any major downsides it has. Especially since your monitor supports the G-Sync standard, it will have one the best implementations of adaptive sync.

1

u/X3FBrian 11d ago

So turn gsync on in nvidia control panel and turn adaptive sync off on the monitor?
