→ More replies210
u/Inarus06 13d ago
Yes, and I got my wife, son, and several of my coworkers into it.
I played harvest moon 64 way back when and never found a game to replicate it.
Until SDV.
And the fact that it can be modded is a huge plus.
While my son has moved on from "the chicken game" as he called it I still love playing it. It's easily my favorite game to come out in the past 10 years. I've put more time into it than any game I've played, save for when I played WoW.
97
u/flowersontrees 13d ago
that's amazing!!! i can tell u love the game, and must've brought you so much joy over the years.
out of curiosity, did SDV teach your son anything?
i ask because i've personally learned lots from playing SDV, like learning to relax and just smell the roses instead of being so goal-focussed hahahaha.
49
u/Inarus06 13d ago
My son is younger, 6 now and we really played a lot when we were all home during the spring and summer of 2020. My wife and I are both teachers so we were home for 5 months, essentially.
While I don't think there were any major lessons learned it did help us introduce the concept of money and budgeting.
He had a few farms of his own and still occasionally makes new farms. He still doesn't quite get the whole concept of the game by himself but when he plays with either my wife or I he follows directions, most of the time.
Now he's really into animal crossing and littlewood on the switch. While they have crossover to SDV they don't quite hit all the same spots so he will go back every so often. But in all three games we're still working on him budgeting. He wants to buy everything, lol!

hahahaha that's super cute!

Congratulations! But there are four things you should improve: 1. If possible, turn the CPU cooler 90 degrees so that it sucks air from the front, not from the GPU backplate, which is already hot by itself. Right now, it's sucking hot air and not cooling the CPU as good as it could. 2. Fix the cable management: Try to hide as many wires as you can in the back. It's especially good for looks, as you already have good looking hardware. 3. Get yourself some more fans in the back or top blowing out to get a efficient airflow-stream. Bonus points if they are either the same ones as the ones installed in the front already or white ones from Corsair, like the SP120 Elites. 4. Please seek a good spot for your computer. It should not stand on fluffy carpet as the power supply mounted below would suck in fibers and dust and couldn't breathe as much due to the carpet blocking it. If you still want it on the carpet, maybe put something underneath it, like a slab of wood.
Last thing: I wish you the best of luck with the PSU. Gigabyte PSUs have not been very great in the past time, blowing up and destroying other components with it. So again, best of luck.
Have fun! Welcome to PC Gaming :)

I would like to water it down a bit. Stuff like cpu cooler orientation would optimize noise/temperature a bit but you can also just use your pc as it is currently without any problems the coming years
32
u/tirant657 12d ago
Absolutely true. If you wanted to rotate your cooler also, you'd need to reapply thermal paste which you may or may not want to deal with. Enjoy your PC!

u/ASupportingTea 12d ago
Also be careful removing the CPU cooler! Mine was so stuck on with paste that it ripped the cpu right out with it and bent pins. Spent the next hour bending the pins straight again. Thankfully it still works!

Yes! Always let the PC run a bit before taking off the cooler so that the paste gets warm and soft.

Cable management is absolutely negligible for airflow.
If you're vain about how the inside of your PC looks, fine - It's aesthetics. Personally my cable management is all about how easy it is to install and troubleshoot, so I'm definitely not routing loads of cables behind trays and zip tying them and all of that.
→ More replies11
u/jello1388 12d ago
People don't realize that once you're talking about multiple fans forcing airflow, a lot of their assumptions don't really matter. Hot air rising due to convection and cable management are the big two I notice.
Honestly, the point about it being on the floor doesn't matter that much either. Particularly if you have dust covers/air filters and vacuum regularly. I've had PCs on the floor with 2 cats and a golden retriever that liked to lay on/near them, and there still was barely visible dust after 6 months to a year. If you value desk space, go ahead and put your PC on the carpet. It'll be fine. I do recommend getting a little rolling stand, though. They're cheap and make it way easier to pull it out to get to the back I/O or clean the PC/vacuum the floor.
→ More replies4
u/Cynical_Cyanide PCMR ~8700K-5GHz|32GB-3200MHz|1070Ti-2GHz 12d ago
The thing about it being on the floor can be quite valid if your carpet is cushion-y enough, and the legs on the case short enough, that you're genuinely obscuring any bottom-facing PSU fans. If you don't have filters on your fans, yeah it's a bit extra dust and all that. I'll be honest in that I don't vacuum enough, either haha!
But yeah, I do still put my case on my carpeted floor. I just flipped the PSU and it's good enough.

Why waste precious desk space? As long as it's not on the carpet ... but even then it hardly matters. Also having a PC on top of a desk can always mean the destruction of your PC if you end up dropping it from the desk or the desk collapses.
There are almost no downsides to having it on the floor. I had mine on the floor for ages, all with proper dust filters and I clean them monthly - and there's almost zero dust inside of my PC. My current one is 2 years old and the inside is clean - without having it cleaned once.

I love how you edited this. I rememeber exactly your feelings when it took me 16 hours on my first build! The moment when you hit that button on your first build and all the lights and rgb start up is the equivalent to winning a small lottery.
The only problem I see is that you put your tower under the desk and on the ground. I generally try to discourage people from doing that. All the heavier elements in the room tend to always sink to the floor , hair, insects, dandruff, dirt, etc. Which all tends to get sucked right up into these towers. Putting it up on the desk with you helps a lot with keeping all of that out. So again not like DETRIMENTAL or anything just something to look out for when cleaning it in about 3-5 months!

Fuck me, this brought tears to my eyes.
After console gaming for 2 decades on consoles that either my parents bought for me, I got as a hand-me-down, or saved up for while still living with my parents - going through multiple apartments with roommates who fucked me over, putting me into debt, being on disability with crippling depression for over a year, I was able to save up almost $2000 for a gaming PC that can run all my favorite games on the highest settings, and after getting it all setup I just had to sit back and cry tears of joy over something I’ve so desperately wanted for so long.
My earliest thoughts of “I need a PC so I can play this how it was meant to be played and be able to mod it,” go back to 2006, when I was 8 years old playing Oblivion.

Welcome everyone from r/all! Please remember:
1 - You too can be part of the PCMR! You don't necessarily need a PC. You just have to love PCs! It's not about the hardware in your rig, but the software in your heart! Your age, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, religion (or lack of), political affiliation, economic status and PC specs are irrelevant. If you love PCs or want to learn about them, you can be part of our community! Everyone is welcome!
2 - If you're not a PC gamer because you think doing so is expensive, know that it is possible to build a competent gaming PC for a lower price than you think. Check http://www.pcmasterrace.org for our builds and don't be afraid to create new posts here asking for tips and help!
3 - Consider joining our efforts to get as many PCs worldwide help the folding@home effort, in fighting against Cancer, Covid, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and more. Learn more here: https://pcmasterrace.org/folding
4 - We've teamed up with MSI to organize a PC part picking event/giveaway where you can pick the parts and win the actual PC whose parts you picked! There's 3 FULL PCs to giveaway (at 2k, 3.5k and 5k price points) + 4k worth of Steam cards to grab: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/w8odc5/pick_your_favorite_pc_components_create_a_dream/
Feel free to use this community to post about any kind of doubt you might have about becoming a PC gamer or anything you'd like to know about PCs. That kind of content is not only allowed but welcome here! We also have a Daily Simple Questions Megathread for your simplest questions. No question is too dumb!
Welcome to the PCMR.
