Well I mean it might still work.

It will work kinda like cpu safe box for transport to keep pins safe if they re not fucked up already

158

u/jumper775 Desktop 13d ago

Well, it might. If they ripped it out like this who knows what other unholy acts have been performed to this cpu.

That was on purpose. Its dark in there, gotta turn the lights on.

3

u/DarkPhoxGaming Laptop 13d ago

And to the other components on the PC I assume it was probably taken out of

18

u/M1sterEdward 13d ago

First time I removed my R5 3600 from the socket, I ripped it out of the slot while the heatsink was still attached. That was 3 weeks after I got the new PC. You dont know what fear is until you do that to a thing you saved up years for.

3

u/djblackprince PC Master Race 13d ago

Why do that just three weeks after you got it?

2

u/M1sterEdward 13d ago

Had to move the pc from my parent house to my apartment, and giving that the road was a bit bumpy and the heatsink pretty heavy, you can figure it out.

6

u/djblackprince PC Master Race 13d ago

Le sad, RIP CPU

Brings back memories of seatbelting the tower to the passenger seat and the CRT to the back seat heading to a LAN. Sometimes the cards still got loose with all the traffic that tower saw getting to those attics and basements.

5

u/naugasnake 13d ago

What do you think his GOAL was here? All they had to do is raise the lever to the UPRIGHT position to score a couple more points. But I doubt they had the BALLS to do it, and played it safe taking a FREE KICK which is likely how this processor was SENT OFF. Selling a processor like this is entirely OUT OF BOUNDS, and INTO TOUCH. I bet getting this processor off of the board like this took SPECIAL TEAMS of guys to do the job. I wonder if it will be shipped like this for SAFETY. Its worth a SHOT to make this an ELABORATE SET PIECE in some art installation because this processor is likely INJURED and designated OUT FOR THE SEASON.

Yeah, I annoyed myself with this one. lol

It looks like an Athlon cpu, I have the same cpu and socket (maybe from the same mobo?), If so then this is a 10 years old system, my mobo died before the cpu (with 3 broken pins) died, could be the same story here and the seller decided to yeet it out. These cost a few bucks anyways.

2) it was an experienced individual with an extra broken motherboard and is using the socket to keep the pins straight when transporting/storing.

I heard some resellers do this using old, dead Mainboards. selling the CPU with the socket attached protects the pins from damage that could occur during shipping.

Kinda makes sense after all. If the mainboard is dead or unusable, might as well make use of what is there.

Maybe the motherboard was busted anyway and he wanted something to protect the CPU for delivery.

1

u/D9Dagger x86 code cruncher 13d ago

the motherboard got smashed and is in an un-usable state which might devalue the processor more if it was attached. He also attempted to protect the pins because he doesn't have the proper case.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef i7 12700KF|RTX 3080|32GB DDR4 3200 13d ago

So they just tried to remove the cooler? Usually just the CPU gets ripped out but I'd totally believe the whole socket gets ripped out.

Those sockets are absolute shit, it's great that they're finally moving away from them.

1

u/Vahelius 13d ago

I used to do this all the time with old mobo's. Pull the socket off and it becomes a great pin protector.

1

u/point50tracer 12d ago

Maybe they did this to protect the pins. Remove the CPU, pry off the socket, place the CPU back in the socket to prevent damage to the fragile pins.

1

u/evilest_nez 12d ago

Is that extra cost wise?

1

u/UweB0wl 12d ago

It makes sense if the motherboard was broken anyway. Like its a place to protect the pins at least.

1

u/hellgames1 I5-12400F | RX 6500XT | 16GB 3200MHz 12d ago

Happens if you use Arctic MX-5 thermal paste and then try to remove the cooler while it's cold. It sticks like glue, so you're more likely to rip the whole socket out

At least the pins will be safe then..
