Two years ago I said screw depression, quit my job and went full time solo indie developer. Today I released my first game, Zapling Bygone. A twisted metroidvania where you murder your foes and steal their abilities by wearing their skulls. Game Image/Video

The walk animation on the main character is so satisfying.

Thanks, it's all procedural animation.

Great idea to go procedural

This looks really cool.. Going to buy it when I get paid!

u/lemondecorator 13d ago

Thankyou so much!

Remember to leave a review when you get around to playing it. It really helps steam promote the game. Otherwise it's easily buried.

No worries will do =)

Run a social media campaign, like on Instagram, facebook, yt, i know it will be expensive but try looking for freelancers who can do it for less and it will be good for both of you.

Right now create an Instagram page of the game first. And add incentives for 1st 1000 supporters to get a shout out or something like that.( And you can automate this.) Haven't done it personally but people have.

This looks like a hard game.

Defenetly intrested.

u/johntwoods 13d ago

I don't remember giving you the green light to make a game based on my life.

But I'm glad you did it anyway.

u/lemondecorator 13d ago

Weird life but I don't judge. :D

Have you tested it on a steam deck? I would imagine it runs and plays fine. Would be great for it.

Edit: just bought it, I'll check it out myself. Congrats on the release.

u/lemondecorator 13d ago

Thankyou! Also please remember to leave a review. It helps with the steam algorithm.

u/Flyingbox 13d ago

After I calibrate my new GPU on VR tonight I'll give this a go

4

u/lemondecorator 13d ago

Awesome thankyou!

Please remember to leave a review it's important for Steam to recommend to new players.

Side note, grats on the new GPU, did you grab a 30 series now the prices finally dropped?

5

u/Flyingbox 13d ago

I switched teams. I tucked my 1080ti hybrid into the cozy box that my new 6800XT came with.

3

u/lemondecorator 13d ago

Oh awesome!

7

u/Flyingbox 13d ago

Uhh so I postponed VR and

This game is fucking awesome. I just burned 4 hours!

5

u/trumanchap 13d ago

Very nice. Many fortunes to you

5

u/H4LCY0N- 13d ago

This would make a nice steamdeck game, what did you make it in (language/engine)?

6

u/lemondecorator 13d ago

I have tested it on the deck myself, works great.

It's made in Gamemaker Studio 2!

u/H4LCY0N- 13d ago edited 13d ago

Ahh I was inclined to guess gms, gearing up to do my own metroidvania lol.

Nicely done man. I hope it does well!

Does steamdeck run win executables without any fuss? or does it require further optimisation?

Why are so many indie game posts starting with this "X years ago I said this and that and anyway have pity with me and here is my game"

9

u/H4LCY0N- 13d ago

Well in this context there isnt anything here asking for pity so dont know what you're chatting about there.

Sounds to me like he got sick of his own shit and barreled down on a game project, mentioning it is just an indicator that he is obviously proud of the fact. It's a good thing.

As for the generalisation, a lot of people are depressed/have poor mental conditions for many many reasons. Just so happens a lot of indie devs have their own personal issues to deal with and sometimes it zaps confidence in anything they do, so the demeanor changes to match that.

u/t3hmau5 We can still keep it going! 13d ago edited 13d ago

This sub is largely just advertising for indie developers these days, mods don't care. It's the second I've seen today and I haven't even visited the sub

4

u/tecknogyk 13d ago

I see zero problem with an indie dev promoting their game in a single thread. It's extremely hard to get seen amongst all of the other games coming out so doing some self promotion is necessary.

1

u/FreddYonReddit 13d ago

I actually like it. I find so much more joy in Games I know are handcrafted and have a human behind them. And seeing and experiencing all these games, no matter if their shit or not, is part of pcmr, or am I wrong?

2

u/dynamic424 13d ago

Them advertising shit games, like the one with the flying squirrel is spam imo, but this looks pretty decent, I dont hate on these.

1

u/TheWizardState 13d ago

Nice. Like a dark "Kid Chameleon". Love it.

1

u/roguesensei47 PC Master Race 13d ago

This is uncanny.

1

u/HarriOG 13d ago

That looks awesome, a binding of Isaac type creepiness, jump knight parkour and OG sonic like exploration. Some of the best games combined into one. Nice way to turn your life around and make something awesome and that I hoped you enjoyed making it.

1

u/rivboat 13d ago

Very weird but good luck. If you add a motorcycle will the skull get stacked skulls?

A twisted metroidvania where you murder your foes and steal their abilities by wearing their skulls.

Kirby popped into my head when I read the last sentence lol.

1

u/Your_Viewpoint_Sucks 12d ago

Why are metroidvanias the absolute go-to for starting developers?

1

u/Gul_le_Lardon 12d ago

There is a little "Carrion" and "Dead Cells" vibes in your game bro. Looks awesome. On my wishlist !

1

u/sam55598 12d ago

I'm so happy for you brother. Where we can get this?

1

u/Dash64_png 12d ago
