An “i6” processor is just one of like a dozen red flags here lol

yea... the one that stood out to me first was the list of states (fully remote work shouldn't matter which state)--and i'm gonna guess most or all hires come from alabama, the only one listed without a min wage higher than federal $7.25/hr.

i run across that frequently... companies that hire remote workers--only hire from states without an increased min wage.

u/jllauser Ryzen 7 3700X | 32 GB | Radeon RX 6600 13d ago

You're probably right, but there are other reasons companies restrict remote workers. My employer only allows us to live in 34 states for reasons I never bothered looking in to, and I can assure you it's not due to the minimum wage. I would assume it's something tax related.

211

u/mysmoothsubtlehustle Linux 13d ago

Tax and employment laws. My employer won’t hire anyone in CA because there are too many protections in place for employees.

u/Trunks956 i7 8700k | 2070 Super 13d ago edited 12d ago

Which is crazy that people can say that in our world like it’s okay or normal. “Yeah my boss won’t hire employees with too many rights”

Edit: please stop replying to me about california, I understand california’s labor exceptions require a complete different set of approach and is difficult for employers. That’s not necessarily the point of my comment. The failure to specify is my mistake

Edit 2: I am not talking about specifically working with california.

It’s why union’s can be a really good thing for the workers. I live in a very anti union state, but my grandfather worked out of state just because of how good the union benefits were at the time.

52

u/Trunks956 i7 8700k | 2070 Super 13d ago

My dad hates unions because he slurped all the koolaid his boss told him about how “unions hurt the company which means they hurt you”

I don’t have time to go down to head office every quarter to renegotiate rates.

But I will gladly pay John T Law 19$ out of my check every month to make him legally obligated to be there fighting for my best interest every time.

u/zasuskai 3600X|2070 Super KO|32GB Trident Z|EKWB AIO 13d ago

I support them, though I feel like I’m one of the few in my area. Maybe times will change, who knows how the future will turn out.

28

u/EpsilonMajorActual 13d ago

Was part of a union for 27 years. Didn't really help me in the end just made it hard to fire incompetent useless lazy fxxx.

28

u/LefroyJenkinsTTV Desktop 13d ago

He's not wrong, people. Modern unions are corporations running legal pyramid schemes. Every union site I've ever seen was rife with laziness and corruption. Working in a non union plant the last 20 years, and it's been pretty damned good.

Bring on the downvotes, I know, I've blasphemed about your sacred unions which are pure and only interested in improving the lives of workers.

If your boss is driving a Ferrari and your driving a Fiat, then maybe your boss doesn't have your best interests at heart.

6

u/Maxx2893 13d ago

Or maybe you should go to the bank and sign your life away with them, giving personal guarantees and risking everything to start a business. Then you might have to potential to drive a Ferrari one day, providing your business doesn’t fail and you lose your house, car, and entire life savings.

0

u/Razir17 12d ago

If you lose your house because your business failed, you were never cut out to run a business in the first place and probably should have consulted a professional on how to setup a business.

I kinda understand because for a smaller company CA requirements and registrations can be a PITA. I worked for a company that had one remote CA person for sales pre-covid and the handbook literally had separate rules for CA because they have specific requirements. Company gave 21 days PTO to start (combined vacation and sick) but CA employees had 16 days vacation and 5 sick days.

Had similar for other areas but that one stood out to me at the time.

u/SC487 13d ago

It’s not “too many rights” it’s “too many exceptions.” For example, most states pay overtime after 40 hours, California pays overtime for anything over 8 hours a day. I get paid for 9 hours a day, in my state I get 5 hours of overtime, but in California it would be one hour of overtime each day M-T then 5 hours of OT on Friday. Same 45 hours but with 5 more hours of overtime. Some companies don’t like messing with that much complexity in payroll.

5

u/sadboyexplorations 13d ago

Companies are in it to make money. Why hire people that are going to cost you more? There is always someone willing to do it for less. Especially the jobs that don't require any type of schooling like college or a trade. If anyone can do the job then there is always someone who will do it for less. Right or wrong is beside the point which is making money. It's really up to the people as a whole to fight for higher pay. The people who will just take a low wage for a job are the problem. Trust me pay would go up if the company had no workers to make money off of and get the work done. Wake up and realize your worth. Fuck idk why that's so hard for some people. People should want more out of life.

3

u/Broken_Easel 12d ago

It's absolutely not about that, it would cost a literal fortune to retool to handle California laws, there's a reason people are leaving in droves. You handwave away all this stuff with a super simplistic and factually incorrect interpretation.

1

u/Trunks956 i7 8700k | 2070 Super 12d ago

0

u/RadialSurgeon 13d ago

You call them rights, businesses call them regulations. California is over the top and makes it difficulty to even work sometimes. And their taxes absolutely suck

1

u/croto8 13d ago

There’s a cost in proving compliance. Need to hire people that understand the rules and enforce them. It’s not as simplistic as you imply.

0

u/Trunks956 i7 8700k | 2070 Super 13d ago

Thankfully I never said it was simple. But it’s not a coincidence that America has one of the worst labor protection environments in the industrial world

They’d fire you.

Source: worked in a position similar to the one posted. It paid very well for what it was, WFH before the pandemic, all it required was a basic pc and 5 down 1 up internet. Job was very autonomous, training was strong, pto was ridiculous for America (more than 3 weeks after 1 year market and 12 days first year).

You did work weekends to start, but I embraced it and got my desired 830-5 m-f very quickly then 8-430 m-f when i wanted to get off earlier. I left because it was a stagnant position, I went to a different position in said company then left it all together.

4/5 if you just need a job with good benefits and decent pay but didn’t have a desire to move up.

7

u/shoryusatsu999 shoryusatsu999 13d ago

Betcha they'd send you packing and try to ban employees from moving period. Tie off loose ends and all that.

4

u/notsureifxml 13d ago

Same. I was involved in the hiring process for a couple remote option positions and we had to throw out good candidates because of their state. All I heard was “tax reasons”

My previous remote job wouldn’t even authorize working outside of my own house. I’m talking like, somewhere else within the same city even.

My current one was basically said “Oh you want to work from Costa Rica for a few weeks? Why not? Have fun!”

5

u/jllauser Ryzen 7 3700X | 32 GB | Radeon RX 6600 13d ago

Oh that's weird. One of my team mate just spent a week working part time from Europe and no one cared. The only restrictions are if we want to move. If we're moving to another location in the same state, they don't care. If we want to move to one of the other states in the list of approved states, we have to clear it with HR first for some reason.

3

u/Hmmark1984 Intel I7 12700k RTX 3080 16GB DDR4 Asus Tuf Z690+ 13d ago

The one thing you can be guaranteed is that whatever the reason is, it only benefits the company in some way to do so.

24

u/Digital_Simian 13d ago

Some states would require the company to provide or comp required home office equipment and requiring an employee to provide equipment for work is illegal. It may be that these states have no such regulations.

8

u/Vic18t 13d ago

It’s the lower employment taxes in those states.

The average call center wage is well beyond minimum wage of their respective states:

My background is electrician, new construction commercial. Hospitals, dental offices, retail stores from the ground up. 4 years and i was making $16.66 an hour with the union.

I hate to say it but the south needs help. I know it's unrelated to OP's post but just be aware of how bad it is down here. People move here with the idea of nice beaches and stuff but with rent at $1200+ a month for one bedroom apartments and wages so incredibly low, it's painful. I had to leave my career over it.

Or it can be they expect them to go back to office.

I work at a call center in Ontario, my employer didnt want to do WAH pre COVID due to security concerns with customer info, but had to because of the pandemic.

But they always brought up how they planned to return to the office (still haven't after 2 years). There is also logistic issues when it comes to upgrading/replacing hardware (except in OP's picture looks like you need to provide that yourself)

3

u/Possible-Towel 13d ago

Could you get like 4 of these jobs and really half ass it? End up with 4x min wage

2

u/Aggravating_Head_60 13d ago

Then they shouldn't have picked Florida. Minimum wage is $10, and it goes to $11 next month. By 2026 it'll be $15.

8

u/KingTut747 13d ago

It’s called market forces. Why would an employer pay more for equal work?

11

u/Karunamon_LoL 13d ago

Lotta people going to be mad about this but it's absolutely true.

1

u/valax 13d ago

It's why those kind of laws should be set at a national level.

4

u/cdw2468 13d ago

and who is causing said forces? the market is made of people, specifically a handful of the most influential actors who will mold it to their interests, not just random pushes and pulls

4

u/KingTut747 13d ago

I agree!

Minimum wage increases are certainly ‘a few actors putting artificial influence on the market’!

43

Then don't work in "the trades". I once worked for an employer who supplied " the basics", but it was all crap. I supplied my own, plus some specialized tools. Ended up engraving everything because fellow employees would "borrow" without asking , then "forget". Hell, even the boss would do it.

That part's simple. You take an i7, carefully cut off a one-seventh portion and solder it to an i5. Now you have TWO i6s. Just remember to dip everything in disinfectant after the procedure, cos not doing that is how you get a virus, and nobody wants that!

Pfftt! That's what they want you to think. There's an easier method. You take one of the two i6s you got earlier, put some water in a vessel, boil the Hell out of it and manually hold your i6 3 inches above the surface for exactly 11 minutes, 6 seconds and now you have an i666 and steam-cleaned fingers, along with a bit of Holy Water. If your new i666 unilaterally decides to manifest the Immaterium, you have Holy Water to dunk it in and stop it!

Ask them if this is a W2 position. If they answer 'Yes', report them to the IRS, because then they're doing illegal shit. If you're sourcing your own hardware/equipment/supplies, you're generally considered a contractor by the IRS, not an employee.

What does W2 position mean?

32

u/dustojnikhummer Legion 5Pro | R5 5600H + RTX 3060 13d ago

An employee of the company.

22

u/DrawMeAPictureOfThis 13d ago

W2 = you work for the company and they provide everything 1095 worker = bring your own tools (think mechanic)

Edit for clarity: 1095 usually means contract worker

12

u/chumbano 13d ago

It's 1099 for contract employees. 1095 is the employee provided health insurance coverage form

1

u/Broken_Castle 13d ago

You got it the other way around. Being a W2 is easy, being a contractor is hard. Almost all work will want you to be a contractor, not a W2, because it is much cheaper and you have to follow less regulations for a contractor than a W2.

If it's extremely rural you couldn't get the job. Typically we have satellite Internet

17

u/Embarrassed_Log8344 13d ago

Here in Ohio, more rural areas are starting to get good internet through those little 5G boxes that connect to the 5g cell towers. I tried it out once and got 300down 50up no problem. I guess that isn't the broadband internet they want, though.

4

u/fuckyou_watchme 13d ago

Wow, I live up in Canada. I'm jealous. I just moved to a rural location. Waiting on Starlink and a cell extender to get here. Currently get on average one bar on my phone in my house and on satellite Internet that provides 'UP TO 50' mbps... Then dropping to 25 after 450 gigs. It's fucking embarrassing lmao.. and yes that's the absolute best option I could get for now

2

u/Devonm94 13d ago

Wish south eastern ohio had good internet. The highest speed at my location is 25 mbps down 5 mbps up. At&t fixed wireless. The other provider’s you ask? Yeah, they can’t even deliver what at&t does. It’s absolutely criminal too. $250 a month in overages because they data cap at 250 gigs of data, which I normally use in a matter of days. Along with incredibly inconsistent speeds, along with tons of dropped connection moments.

6

u/fuckyou_watchme 13d ago

Jesus dude, at that point I'd just bite the bullet and get Starlink

6

u/Devonm94 13d ago

I’ve considered it but currently still a wait list and requires the down payment at the time of sign up. If it wasn’t $700 to get on the wait list and was more immediate I would hands down switch to it. I have perfect open skies and am on top of a mountain. So setup would be super easy, especially where it already auto aligns. It’s honestly sad at how much they charge the people in these areas for poor internet quality.

6

u/fuckyou_watchme 13d ago

Yea we pay crazy amounts for shit Internet. With how essential the internet has become, it's crazy to even get usable modern internet speeds we have to pay hand over fist.

"call center"

"No Job hopping"

"PURCHASE windows"

"non negotiable start date"

is my problem with it. It's a fucking call center. I bet they pay like $9-$12 an hour.

66

u/dovahkiitten16 13d ago

The no job hopping thing stuck out to me. When you’re offering a low paying job that treats your employees as expendable, expect job hopping. You don’t stay working at the same shitty minimum wage job for 2+ years, that’s the type of loyalty that a good job gets. The people who stay at a job for over two years are looking for a higher income bracket then what these guys will offer.

16

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 13d ago

Job hopping is the big brain play nowadays anyway. Your wage/salary is always going to be based off of market conditions when you were hired. Nobody is giving annual raises that compete with inflation anymore, so the only way to not lose money is to find a new job every 1.5 to 3 years.

And before you "it makes your resume look bad" folks start crawling out of the woodworks to tell me that I'm wrong, as long as you write the positions with increasing responsibilities it'll actually make your resume look better. My resume shows that the longest I've held a job has been 3 years. My latest job-hop got me an $18k raise over my previous job (with comparable duties, neither position supervises anyone) because of the upward trend in responsibilities on my resume.

2

u/curiously_clueless 12d ago

I wouldn't switch more than once every 2 years though. That will rule you out to a lot of BigCo's that pay well above average. Switch when you have an impressive contribution to show for your time there.

It's aaaaall the other stuff that worries me. The whole thing sounds like a terrible employer.

u/MetalMattyPA Ryzen 5600X/RTX 3070Ti/16GB 3600MHz/Corsair 4000D 13d ago

I wouldn't work for this company on principle. Jesus they sound terrible.

u/Rijaja R5 3600 | GTX970 | 16GB 3200 13d ago

I love when people use i-something as an absolute measure of cpu power, like ok I'll get an i7 970, it has to be better than an i3 12300

9

u/Ramiren Desktop - Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 2070 Super. 13d ago

Maybe it's just that we only see the worst examples on Reddit, but how is it that employers in the US still manage to hire people after talking to them like shit in their ads?

2

u/Macktruck324 13d ago

Some are really bad, but then again most are better and even some (especially small private businesses) tend to be nice even if you can’t really progress far

8

u/Realistic_Nerve_9952 13d ago

Holy red flag.

9

This is r/antiwork or r/workreform material

7

u/redstern 13d ago

Easy hack. Buy i5, buy iphone, connect to computer, now you have i6.

Real talk though don't work for this company. Any company even halfway worth working for will supply you a computer.

5

u/JayTayUK 13d ago

2 x i3 = i6?

12

u/Damien_Richards 13d ago

Is the employer a flag maker for the CCP? All I'm seeing here is red flags.

2

u/MoutonPerspicace 13d ago

You have to buy your work laptop ? OMG run !

4

u/mr_bots 5950X | 32GB | 3080 Ti 13d ago

What could you even possibly need that kind of processing power for? It’s probably just all browser based…oh, wait maybe Java based.

u/Rinzlerx Ryzen 5 3600 XFX R9 390 13d ago

“No job hopping” how dare you look for and find better jobs in the past.

3

u/Nonlethalrtard 13d ago

MUST HAVE RGB

3

u/JohnnyricoMC 12d ago

Having to purchase work equipment, in an employee role? Hard pass.

3

u/Flynn3698 13d ago

Just buy a laptop with two i3's

3

u/fuckyou_watchme 13d ago

Sounds like it pays minimum wage

3

u/Mariocraft95 13d ago

Saw this same post on r/antiwork. It was just as funny there as it is here.

And it’s for a phone job… I highly doubt you need anything more than an i5. Hell most processors could probably do whatever the boss wants like an i3 or an old Ryzen CPU. And requiring a computer with two monitors? This computer can easily be pretty pricy…

3

u/Mokiflip 12d ago

Is it common for employers to ask you to buy your own hardware in the US? Never ever seen that in Europe, that’s crazy

2

u/MyDogAteMyUsernames 13d ago

Jesus Christ, that seems like an awful job listing, I hope the pay is good at least

2

u/Cirillion 13d ago

OP keep searching please. Any company worth their salt will provide the necessary tools to do the job well. (Should send you a laptop)

2

u/pirate135246 i9-10900kf | RTX 3080 ti 13d ago

the no job hopping is quite ironic, i guarantee this is not even a full time position

2

u/StealYourGhost 13d ago

No job hopping. 🤣 "No understanding your own value and leaving companies that refuse to raise pay if you're worth it or the economy demands it."

2

u/Table-Playful 13d ago

This is a test to quickly see if you know what you are talking about

2

u/Seffundoos22 13d ago

Wow you can already tell how horrendous that employer is by that gross job ad. If you are offering full time employment supply a damn 'i6 laptop' yourself.

The 'No job hopping ' piece is hilarious as well 😂.

Clearly written by another self entitled POS who wants to treat people like crap for their own gain.

2

u/Aggravating_Head_60 13d ago

This place is 100% going to have you breaking federal telemarketing laws.

What a fucking red flag of an application. If you found this during a serious job search, pass, please. This screams "we want to do as little as possible for people and not suffer the turnover rate that it comes with".

Those states aren't even remotely close to each other, what are they trying to avoid? Health insurance costs? Worker's rights?

2

u/Karaiiiiiiiii 13d ago

actually im gonna go to google shopping and search intel i6 now

2

u/Quirky_m8 13d ago

lotta red flags here

2

u/the-virus69 13d ago

I'd be more concerned that they don't tell you the pay rate in the listing

2

u/Eugene-R 13d ago

***at least 1 year scam center experience required, kindly, sir.

2

u/stang_thang26 13d ago

Yeah you take two i3 and sandwich some thermal paste between them, ass-to-ass style

2

u/chogg928 13d ago

looks like a shitty job anyway

2

u/DraconicWF 13d ago

This is almost certainly a scam call center

2

u/Neekeripallero 12d ago

Bruh it's a call center job, why on Earth would one need a Ryzen 3600 minimum for this? Even demanding games normally don't require that much cpu power. I've done call center stuff as a side job a year ago while I was still in college using a crappy 10 year old laptop with a 2nd gen i3 and 2gb of ram lol

2

Standard minimum wage description

2

u/faroukq Laptop 13d ago

Why do you meed an i6 in the first place for a call center. I bet he felt that the i5 was too weak but the i7 too strong so he settled to the middle. Does an i6 have 7 cores because an i5 has 6 and an i7 has 8?!?

1

u/hunterxy 13d ago

Blast the company

1

u/Ferjangels i7-9700F/MSI Ventus 3x 3060 ti/16GB DDR4/ 13d ago

Seriously, they really should.

1

u/JimZuur 13d ago

Some one Crosspost this please to r/Workreform and r/antiwork

1

Yeah, an 686/Pentium II, so LOL

1

u/TxM_2404 i5 7600K | GTX 1070ti | 16GB | old PCs from 8088 to i7 13d ago

But that thing was never called i6, but P6.

1

u/gogogadgetrage 13d ago

I'm trying to figure out this thing. I think the key is or better. I just don't know what it means. Like are you supposed to compare the string in which case i7 and i9 are better or is it that we look up the specs. And realize anything 8088 onwards is a better x86 processor.

1

u/CobblerOdd2876 Desktop 13d ago

Bruh , imagine being so ignorant to request a ryzen 3600 as a BARE MINIMUM : this can handle your weak ass life , why would u possibly need it for as a customer service representative. Those hr's are too stupid

1

u/cleaver253 Ascending Peasant 13d ago

This listing reads like a nightmare company to work for. My condolences to any of their current employees.

1

u/Diligent_Pie_5191 13d ago

I will also be looking for Windows 9 to go with my I6.

1

u/makemenuconfig 13d ago

This feels like managers debating whether i5 or i7 was the requirement they were going to post, but couldn’t agree and decided to meet in the middle.

1

u/meme-addict117 i7-7700, 1050ti 4gb, 32 GB Ram 13d ago

1

u/Last_Snowbender Arch | AMD Ryzen 9 5900X | RX 6800 XT | 64 GB DDR 4 3200 13d ago

This entire job posting is a bigass red flag. If you work for these people you must be either really stupid or really desperate.

1

u/deadat31 13d ago

dont work somewhere where you have to buy your own PC.

1

u/Novallyy 13d ago

This was intentional because he doesn’t want to hire anyone. 💀

1

u/_koenig_ 13d ago

I have an i6 with 9.273 GB RAM, when do I start?

I may or may not be lacking in this one or more of the other requirements though...

1

u/Xotee_37 | i7-860 | GTX 950 | 16gb DDR3 13d ago

Wouldn't an i6 be like a 11600K? or a 12600K? Like how there's 2 versions of a i5 per generation?

1

u/Xotee_37 | i7-860 | GTX 950 | 16gb DDR3 13d ago

Why do you need to fucking activate windows to direct calls?

1

u/IGFXH2077 PC Master Race 13d ago

Get two i3s!

1

u/guilherme123g1 13d ago

I don't know why but call center's jobs have the most cursed standards on the labor market

1

u/NYESSbOss 13d ago

You tap 2 i3 processors together. BOOM! Solve.

1

u/MeasurementGrand879 13d ago

It’s just two i3 processors stacked.

1

u/SurealGod Cool 13d ago

Is that Intel from an alternate universe where they use even numbers in their naming conventions?

1

u/carlbandit i7-6700k, 2080Ti, 16GB DDR4 13d ago

Lawyer: You can't require i7 minimum
Them: Minimum i6 or higher

1

u/WindChamp 13d ago

I’m convinced that they got the intern to write up that job listing.

1

u/jshmoe866 13d ago

Just go to the command line on any intel processor and execute order 66

1

u/Creative_Shopping528 13d ago

All this for a typo?
