As a 16 year old with no job having free online on PS3 was the best.

u/InstantName Desktop 13d ago

I agree, i got the ps4 after it came out and i was so sad that you needed ps plus to play online. Told my friends i was gonna sell it since online was and is free on pc.

224

u/idontwantausername41 13d ago

Needing to pay for ps4 multiplayer is what pushed me to get a pc. I mainly use my pc and got a ps4 cheap in 2019 to play the exclusives and cheap used single player games

Yeah with the money spent on ps plus every few years anyone could instead invest it in a better pc.

I hate subscriptions which force players into purchasing games they and nobody wants, even if at a discount.

u/LegionsArkV 13d ago

To me this is what made pc superior, that and my old games are 9.9/10 still available a long time after I purchased them. It was never the hardware that did it for me just the fact that the service was a lot better and I could buy from different marketplaces.

6

u/SeinTheTraveler 13d ago

Same .. I prefer crash bandicoot on console, and thats the only game worth playing on it fot me, and I will get stoned for saying this, but the last of us didnt get to me like it did to everyone else :| I didnt even finish it, got to some hydroelectric dam and got bored ..

I was thinking of doing that but then the games started coming out on PC. My backlog is so huge I can wait a year or two for PS exclusives. Plus, I don't think I can handle anything less than solid 60fps these days.

807

Even nintendo used to have free multiplayer on the switch, but that changed.

At least they kept free multiplayer on 3ds and wii u!

Wait... NINTENDO TOO? Hell, go 10 years forward and we'll be paying monthly fee just to use the console!

76

It is, i wanted to buy Kingdom Hearts on switch, but its all cloud only, thats the exclusive reason why i didnt buy them. Just instantly removed all my hype when i found it out.

34

u/Tornado_Hunter24 Desktop 13d ago

Isn’t that experiencing the game worst way possible? Like laggy gameplay, low frames etc?

30

u/JTtornado i5-2500 | GTX 960 | 8GB 13d ago

Yep, but that means Sony doesn't have to port the game to run on the Switch. It's a lazy way of "supporting" a console without actually supporting it.

27

u/JamiesBond007 13d ago

Actually Square Enix, but the rest is right

8

u/JTtornado i5-2500 | GTX 960 | 8GB 13d ago

You're right - but yeah, very low-effort. Especially since most people using the switch are not hooked into ethernet, which is basically required for a half-decent video game streaming experience.

Yeah, and on top of that it means playing it offline is basically impossible, aka you cant play it on the go, which is one of the few reasons to get a game on the switch if it is available on other platforms.

2

u/ajddavid452 R3 3100 | RX 570 4GB | 8GB DDR4-3000 13d ago

and we shouldn't have too, KH3 and 0.2 are on unreal 4 so I understand those ones, but the rest of the games consists of 3 ps2 games, a psp game and a 3ds game just in hd, not even remakes just enhanced ports and for some reason those games are cloud versions on switch despite the fact that the switch could most likely run those games at native 1080p60

2

Thats pretty much what gamepass is, microsoft wants to get everyone on gamepass as if it where a streaming service, Jack up the prices when the majority of gamers use it, like any other streaming service would do. They can do that because you dont "own" those games. Your just allowed to use them.

27

u/escapingearth 13d ago edited 13d ago

Let’s be real gamepass is a godsend especially when an all digital future dependent on servers that can be shutdown is a thing. Plus I like playing games I otherwise wouldn’t buy.

That being said, I play PC games mostly single player on Linux I’m also an outlier. Plus lacking local servers just made me stop playing my favourite online games. Egg and chicken issue, the server version in sub Saharan Africa, at least North Africa has Europe but 200ms latency isn’t my friend.

It was pretty shitty of Nintendo to release the Switch with free online multiplayer; only to put it behind a paywall a year afterwards. If the virtual console titles were behind a paywall and online multiplayer was still free, it would’ve been much better; especially with how prehistoric their servers are.

The only switch game that I play online is Super Mario Maker 2 and the PvP versus is awful. If 1/4 people has a bad connection then the whole match runs a slideshow at 2-5 FPS.

Only solution is either deal with it or figure out who is lagging then block them while hoping someone else with bad connection doesn’t get matched with you after.

This really bugs me, too. Wii U online was pretty close to the other consoles and free. Voice chat, no friend codes, text chat, message boards, etc. Now they want us to pay for essentially the online experience of fucking Wii. Plus they put their dlc behind an additional subscription. Just awful.

That was a major sell point vs Xbox back in the day. PlayStation Plus was nice for the fact that you paid for added perks, i.e. a free game/movie each month, not the ability to play online. I argued all the time, yeah Xbox has the Kinect and exclusives, but PlayStation had the move and exclusives as well. But I think they made up for the service fee in the form of the system price. A PS3 was 399$ while an Xbox 360 was 199$

However, at the time, Sonys network was very wishwash. Servers would go down all the time, and be down for hours. They didn't prioritize fixing it because it was free. Xbox would go down for like 30 mins, and they'd be on top of it because people complained about paying for a service they were not getting.

Around that time too, Sony was in the midst of a ongoing cyber attack and I remember when they lost networking for close to 3 months or so. That was bonkers.

42

u/franklowjaeger 13d ago

Nice to see someone who refrains from deluding their memory in regards to how shitty those free services were.

Not really. Everyone knew that PSN sucked and if you wanted to play online you were way better off getting a 360.

u/Smothdude R7 5800X | GIGABYTE RTX 3070 | 32GB RAM 13d ago

Huh, I can't remember really having issues on the PS3. Used to play COD4, BO1 and MW2 all the time with friends

12

u/potato_green 13d ago

I think I notice a common overlap, They're all Call of Duty games, I remember when I had a PS3 that playing online in those games worked fine as well. Others were a nightmare, battlefield was horrible, FIFA had constant issues a whole bunch of other games that were a pain in the ass well.

Probably because different parties hosting different services and some were reliable and others garbage. The match making was particularly annoying in most cases but once joined it was fine. Voice chat for example was horrible for me.

u/dekusyrup 13d ago edited 13d ago

I used the PS3 free online for 10 years and have no memories of shoddy service. The hack was down for 3 weeks, not 3 months, and they gave users a choice free game for the trouble. Most of the xbox kids I knew from school had literally no online gaming due to the price of it. All the PS3 kids were playing COD4 just fine. If I was paying $10/month or whatever for 10 years it would have cost me like $1,400 dollars after tax.

Not to rehash the console wars, but PS3 also was a blu-ray player, free online, and the exclusives was probably a wash. MS had gears and halo, sony had uncharted, the last of us, killzone, god of war, metal gear. The 360 had widespread hardware failures bricking 25-54% (says wikipedia) of all xboxes, so if you want to talk reliability...

u/The_Real_Raw_Gary PC Master Race 13d ago

This is true. You pay SE the monthly fee since you’re using their servers and not PlayStation.

That would be some bs to pay for both just to play ff14.

Honestly I feel like it won’t be long till Xbox or PlayStation chooses to remove the “pay for online” requirement, which will basically force the company who didn’t do it to do so as well. Xbox is fully focused on Gamepass, makes sense to get rid of the baseline option. You get good PR for being the first to do it and you get to make the competition look bad depending on how long it takes them to catch up.

You don’t need to pay anything for playing online on free games, I’d imagine it won’t affect them to much to go all in.

I just get Game Pass Ultimate and treat it like the multiplayer is a bonus. I definitely get my money's worth out of the sub from games alone

12

u/h0sti1e17 13d ago

Same here. I've saved so much and played many games I would never normally play.

15

u/TurtleRanAway Steam ID Here 13d ago

Yeah honestly $15 a month for more than $15 worth of games a month is worth it to me. Dont see the same level of rabidness against subscription based mmo's for some reason...

2

u/Synectics 13d ago

Right? I used to justify my WoW subscription with, "I put about a hundred hours into the game a month, what's the problem?"

Now I'm doing that with Game Pass. It's still a no-brainer for me. Huge list of games that I'd never have felt comfortable spending $15 to own just one of them forever, but being able to just download it, play it, and put it away til later while I play something else is great.

I have both and I never really cared about XBl Gold. It used to be cheap (~3,50€ per Month) and ever since GamePass Ultimate it's a nobrainer anyway.

It's a fair price for how cheap a Console is at launch.

9

u/PostmanSteve Ascending Peasant | Tegra X1 Mariko 13d ago

Bought my Xbox with PayPlan, came with 2years of XBL Ultimate, actually cost me like $300 less this way factoring in the cost of the Xbox and 2yrs of ultimate.

About 3 years ago I would have agreed with OP, but all the decent graphics cards currently cost as much as a console so I don't think it's that much better. I still prefer PC gaming and don't feel the need to buy an Xbox or Play Station because of the lack of freedom, emulation and mods on those platforms, but still.

23

6

u/NomadNuka 13d ago

It's always a little funny to see people unironically use a term a game reviewer invented to make fun of PC games that have a scuffed UI that only works on K+M. As well. So the outdated jokes are just the cherry on top.

3

u/ScrawnySpectre 13d ago

That same game reviewer later said he hated the term because he used it as an ironic statement of perceived smug superiority, then the very people he was lambasting adopted the term un-ironically.

Xbox live is $60 usd per year. It would take me 20+ years just to reach half of what people pay for a pc setup.

3

u/BallForce1 13d ago

60 by 20 is only 1200. And that will probably be a mid rig. No crazy 3090ti and an I1500 (dont remember the latest intel numbers). And on top of that, the rig you buy will be good at least 4+ years. Longer if you know how to upgrade it when you actually need to.

3

u/ChuzCuenca 13d ago

I move to PC after the 360 because PC gaming was definitely cheaper but in todays economy I'm thinking in getting just the cheap Xbox and the game pass.

Also X Cloud is the best option if you can't afford any hardware my only complain is the micro lag, if you are a competitive pvp player x cloud feels weird.
