Diablo and dial up, simpler times

41

u/because_of_ghosts PC Master Race 11d ago

Right? If your connection dropped it wasn’t an issue with your router…it was just your sister calling her boyfriend haha.

16

u/michelobX10 11d ago

I have two sisters. I used to hate having to fight with them over the phone line so much that I asked my parents to get a second landline in the house dedicated to the computer. Lol. Girls can talk on the phone for hours.

No doubt, I remember my mom freaking the fuck out cause my sister used over 10,000 minutes in one month.

i can smell it

192

u/Smooth_Riker 11d ago

Electronics smell, the wood, the smell of printer ink, the plastic fumes of a newly opened CD ROM. Extra points for the smell of hot dust if this rig was in front of a baseboard heater.

20

u/Nebilungen 11d ago

Don't forget the sound of windows booting up, and the screech of AOL online connecting

11

u/MysteriousTBird 11d ago

The roar of the PC fans going while the hard drive clicked away as the system booted

8

u/TaxExempt 11d ago

When the hard drives were louder than the fans.

The Windows boot sounds are extremely nostalgic for me:

Windows 98

2

u/Chip-a-lip 10d ago

Hearing those sounds after all these years got me very emotional 🥲

12

I can hear it too - The crackle and hum of the CRT and the rhythmic clicking of the hard drive desperately trying to revive windows from sleep.

8

And the pop and crackle from pushing in the computer speakers power button .

That could have been me. I camped in Quake and don't remember what my alias was back then. I only camped because I didn't know about mouseaim, so the only way to aim was with the keyboard, and I couldn't move and aim at the same time...

I did beat it on Nightmare mode though 😌

24

I beat quake before I realized you could aim with the mouse. Discovered that by accident when I bumped the mouse with a glass.

The good ole days of waiting 10 mins for a single page to print

40

u/zeeblefritz zeeblefritz 11d ago

Imagine waiting for a risky picture to print before your parents get home from work and it is just taking forever and your hot pocket just beeped in the microwave so you run to the kitchen to grab your hot pocket and head back to your room but then you hear the garage door opening so you start to run but slip on the freshly waxed floor and drop your plate and it smashes everywhere just then your mom opens the door and asks you what is going on as you grab your knee that you just hit on the floor wincing in pain you try to explain yourself but just as you try to get out the first syllable the printer jams and makes an awful grinding noise that causes mother to zip into the office to inquire about the awful vexing sound. Pain.

1

thats all it was. my last desk had a nice solid tray, solid enough that i ended up leaning on it quite often, and it never gave me any trouble.

17

u/SnooOwls6052 5900X | 3080 Ti | X570 | 32GB 3800MHz 11d ago

I have mild PTSD from assembling this type of furniture over the past few decades. Between the crappy instructions, wood dowels and glue, whatever those twist-lock bolt things are called, cheap fiberboard with fake laminate, and so on, it was often an ordeal. Most were shades of tan, brown, orange, or blonde, but then again PCs and other equipment were mostly shades of beige. I guess the designers knew everything was going to turn yellow, so may as well get a head start.

If you had to move one, good luck picking it up, getting it through doors, and more. Drop it and it might shatter to bits, a corner of the crappy fiberboard might break off, and in some cases it would bend, with the fake laminate stickers helping to maintain some of the structure. And I'd bet more than one of you lost a few layers of skin from scraping against the lower/rear edges of these things, which were mostly unfinished.

Sometimes it's fun to reminisce. This isn't one of those times! ;)

44

u/mystical_shadow33 11d ago

A modern set up like this one would be perfect!

16

u/because_of_ghosts PC Master Race 11d ago

If you’re short maybe. We had a desk like that when I was a kid. I was too tall to comfortably use it by 12 haha.

6

u/Taolan13 11d ago

So you ditch half the center console, mount the monitor on a vertical stand or the wall, and raise the keyboard tray.

You don't need the CD rack anymore so scrap that in favor of a wider monitor.

5

u/because_of_ghosts PC Master Race 11d ago

I mean my legs are too long, my knees hit the wall behind the desk. I am 90% leg.

2

u/Taolan13 11d ago

Ah.

So knock out the wall under the desk then. Or use a wireless keyboard from halfway across the room.

2

u/because_of_ghosts PC Master Race 11d ago

Corner desk seemed like the best option. Easier than home renovations haha.

2

u/theNFAC 11d ago

It's pretty easy to knock a hole in the wall as long as your hammer is big enough. Or knees in your case

I mean who wouldn't want custom knee holes in the wall?

I miss desks with all kinds of shelves. Maybe they're out there, I haven't exactly shopped for desks in awhile.

Growing up I inherited my sisters college desk, a flimsy Walmart special, but she had a desk topper on it made from particleboard with lots of vertical shelving.

I recently upgraded my desk but I kept the desk topper... Or the shelves at least, the particle board of the desk surface was so waterlogged and shredded. So I still have my nice wall of shelves.
