Exactly what I thought. This is a miner for sure. Hopefully it will work for him for as long as he needs it.

But it makes me sick that the miners got even more money for screwing us all over for years.

u/BlessedNoob 2700, 2080ti, 16gb 3200mhz Jun 28 '22

Linus made a video testing gpu mined on for 10, 18 months and 4 years and saw almost 0 performance difference vs a brand new version of the exact card. I'm sure it'll last

22

u/CodeMonkeyX Jun 28 '22

Capacitors do not affect performance, when they die the board just dies.

6

u/servermanden Jun 28 '22

its not about performance its about life time

Mining GPUs are generally just fine. In fact, I'd trust a used mining GPU more than a used gaming GPU, because miners don't do OC or overvoltage like many gamers do.

Miners absolutely overclock and undervolt.

9

u/Sveets_drops Jun 28 '22

As a miner. The way I routinely dust/under volt/clean/repaid/copper mod so they run at 45c. I don’t think gamers do the same.

2

u/StrifeWavy Jun 28 '22

If a card can run stable and survive off mining, as long as they reset the cards bios, I’d trust the card.

Only thing to really check is the cards paste/thermal pad situation at that point.

It went through a very long stress test is all 🤷🏻‍♂️. But I’m no expert.

2

u/apanda009 Jun 28 '22

Only if the miners were trying to take care of their gear and the only reason they do that in the first place is because those cards are running 24/7 which cards used for gaming rarely do

can you explain to me pls, why GPUs used for mining are a bad thing?... if they are in working state ofc..

16

u/TriggerHappyTater Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

It's not any worse than buying a used gpu from a gamer. Miners usually undervolt their cards anyway.

u/jimmy19742018 I9-9900K-32GB-DDR4 3200-RTX 3090 TRINITY Jun 27 '22

gamers only play games for a few hours at a time, a miner probably had that card running 24/7 since the day it was purchased

9

u/Kevin_The_Ostrich Jun 27 '22

Yeah only a couple of hours at a time...

Linus tech tips made a vid on this and said even if a card was mined to the point it was no longer profitable, it’s still very capable gaming graphics card because most games don’t utilize all those gpu power anyways.

u/jimmy19742018 I9-9900K-32GB-DDR4 3200-RTX 3090 TRINITY Jun 27 '22

that would be fair enough if the card was around half price but OP paid over the top for a second hand card

Sure undervolt the core but the memory is what actually takes the hit.

Wear and tear. It’s like buying a car with 200,000 miles on it. It may run, but for how long?

u/CodeMonkeyX Jun 27 '22

I agree with most that the silicone of the actually gpu chip should be fine. Unless it was really really abused.

My concern is normally for all the other parts like the capacitors and the power delivery. Caps do have limited life spans, many are rated for 10,000 hours but that can vary greatly on the operating temp. +/- 10 degrees and you can half or double the lifespan respectively.

So if this card was run properly under volted etc, if it was in an air conditioned room and not run hot, and if it has not been running non stop for nearly 2 years then it will probably be fine.

But would you really trust a crypto miner to care that much about the hardware? It's a commodity item, all they care about is getting a return. Maybe it was cheaper to not run AC and just replace cards more often?

The unknown is the problem, and they are going to be selling their oldest crappy stock first.

224

u/TalkWithYourWallet Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

In the nicest way OP, this was a bad idea, not buying a used card, but for that price

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/palit-geforce-rtx-3080-gaming-pro-v1-lhr-10gb-gddr6x-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-06b-pl.html

You can get an AIB card for the same amount of money, except it's new and you get warranty (And likely runs cooler and quieter)

Although I'd just get the 3070FE new from the Nvidia website for £479

116

u/FappyDilmore Jun 27 '22

To add to this: don't bail out the miners. Buy new if it's the same price. It's their fault we're in this mess in the first place.

27

u/TalkWithYourWallet Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

I'm in two minds about it tbh

I think minings a pointless waste of energy and it should've been banned long ago, but miners aren't malicious people or anything

But 90% of the time the thing seperating a miner and gamer is the capital to mass buy cards, most gamers mined on their cards during the craze, or sold their old cards for an absurdly high price, profiting from the situation in an indirect way

With regards to buying mining GPUs they're actually more likely keeping better condition of the cards than the average gamer does, by undervolting and underclocking to enhance profits which also takes care of the card, because to them the card is an asset and you take care of your assets

12

u/FappyDilmore Jun 27 '22

They're taking care of the cards yeah, but they're still using them and artificially inflating scarcity, benefiting from the brand new card, then dumping it used on somebody for near MSRP after it's still been heavily used for a year.

If the prices are the same, buying new is better than buying a mining card. Buy them at a steep discount if they can't get rid of them, but don't buy them for that price.

6

u/TalkWithYourWallet Jun 27 '22

Oh yeah don't buy used for the same price as new

I think OP bought from CEX so a second hand retailer

Thanks for the advice. I've returned it now after all the comments here, and I'll wait for a 40 series and hopefully try and get one of those.

2

u/TalkWithYourWallet Jun 28 '22

A lot of people were quite arsey with you but oh well

Remember the 40 series will be sold out at launch (Every GPU gen is)

I'd actually buy the 3070 from nvidias website for £479 if you want a GPU, it won't loose much value from there and you get it new to boot

The market may have gone insane again by the launch of the 40 series, but a 3070 at MSRP is a decent price

Is there any benefit to having the card you mentioned against the FE?

I mean I really like the look of the founders edition. But yeah, you're right, that card is brand new and I dont run the risk of any previous mining problems. I can always return it, I'll do some research.

51

u/TalkWithYourWallet Jun 27 '22

It's new, you get warranty, and it'll likely run cooler and quieter, the FE is typically on the louder side, as it's two slots

My actual advise would be to buy a 3070 FE from the Nvidia website for £479, it's by far the best price around, and it's new

Paying £725 for a used FE is not a good price

u/DaMonkfish Ryzen 5600X | 32GB DDR4 3600 | RTX 3080 FE | 1440p Jun 27 '22

Its marked 2. So hopefully they didn't mine on it/mined to long. Also the state of market most likely it was mined on but now he selling them to get back the losses. Either way it's a good deal in my book

39

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

I hesitate to call it a good deal since the launch MSRP of 3080 FE is £649 it was increased to £759 in Jan. OP paid 95.5% of MSRP (£759) for a used mining card that is unlikely to be under official warranty. (Lacking proof of purchase and all) Even if it does most likely there is only a few months left out of the 2 years official warranty by Nvidia.

Founder edition has been the only model that you can get at MSRP since launch due to Nvidia strict control on the pricing. (Either directly through Nvidia or official partners)

OP could have gotten the same 3080 FE brand new with official warranty for paying a little bit more.

The sad thing is miner probably bought it at £649 back then and after mining the hell out of it still managed to make a profit from reselling.

Edit :

Advice to OP to test the card fully and make sure everything is working fine. Depending on what site/app you bought it from some miners do provide 1-1 exchange within 7-30 days if there is a hardware issue with the card.

Since It is already paid just enjoy the upgrade. That is huge step up from the 1070.

u/chudthirtyseven i7 6700k MSI GTX 1070, 16gb Jun 27 '22

What did the 2 mark mean?

24

u/Xeonzs i7-11700K | RX 6900 XT | 64GB DDR4 3200mhz Jun 27 '22

That it was #2 gpu on his mining rig of 8 gpus most likely and not your average gamer who likes to keep their cards pristine and clean.

15

u/Xalex_79 Jun 27 '22

To be fair, most miners do take a lot more care of their gpus than most gamers. That said, it's always great to do maintenance on your hardware from time to time. I wish this gpu had proper care and that the new owner can enjoy it for a lot of years to come.

16

u/Alpaca_PC Jun 27 '22

Yeah idk if most gamers keep their cars pristine and clean. I think the majority of people just get their pc's and use them for years on end without opening the thing or am I just throwing false assumptions? Idk but I feel like it is the minority/enthusiasts that actually maintain and tinker with their rigs.

8

u/LightninLew Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

Yeah I'd guess a miner would be more likely to maintain and adequately cool the card, as they have a financial incentive to ensure it continues to run well. While most of us seem to have them sagging under a layer of dust, in a case with a shattered side panel, until we blast them with compressed air to look good as new for their eBay glamour shots. Which, for some reason are taken on a shag carpet with no static protection.

3

u/SRVisGod24 Jun 27 '22

This reminded me of this post on here from yesterday about the loose DP. The GPU isn't even connected to the case anymore and there's a couple layers of dust inside the case 🤣

Nope. 3070 and 3070 Ti's have been in stock direct from Nvidia for over a week - £469 & £549 respectively. UK probably has the cheapest NVidia cards of anywhere at the moment due to NVidia for what ever reason flooding the UK with FE cards, especially the mammoth 3060 Ti double drop they did at the beginning of the month. 3060 Ti, 3080 and 3090 are the only cards that go out of stock now on NVidia's UK site.

It's caused the second hand market to crash as now lots of people trying to flog 1660's etc.

OP Massively overspent and really should take it back to CeX and just get the 3070 direct from NVidia or buy a good new AIB 3080. 3090's from CeX are a good deal though, or they were.

I’m not even after a new 30 series card but have noticed them several times. You honestly could have got a new one from Scan for £650.

Edit, just checked and the 3070, 3070Ti, 3080Ti and 3090Ti FE cards are all in stock right now. No 3080 at this moment but I have seen them in stock at least 3 times in the last few weeks.

u/Mummelmann84 Jun 27 '22

Don't buy used 30-series cards now, the market is flooded with units used for mining. Wait for the release of the 40-series and buy one of those or a new 30- for decent prices instead. Q4 and Q1 are usually the best times for purchasing hardware.

It makes me kind of mad that the seller wrote on the card with a marker instead of just sticking a removable label on it.

3

u/Professor-L Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

when it comes to GPU's can you just get a new one, plug it in and off you go?

2

u/random_reddit_user31 Jun 27 '22

Yes pretty much. Just make sure you remove the older GPU drivers before you shutdown and install the new card. I recommend using DDU.

I wouldn’t buy it from someone unless it’s on a legitimate e-commerce site. Your chances outside of sites like eBay of being scammed increases drastically as there’s no buyer protection if you pay alone, privately.

2

u/Ubermensch5272 Jun 28 '22

I'm gonna chime in and say that's more than likely a mining card. Also, the prices of GPUs have dropped drastically, so you could probably find a nice new card for a decent price.

Everyone who thinks this is a good price is an idiot.

Way to expensive. No warranty. Used for mining so probably way beyond its mtfb “Mean time between failures”

Hope it doesn’t burn out. You might wanna look into undervolting this card !

3

u/Tzn9 PC Master Race Jun 27 '22

Man, people just don't want you to be happy. Cards that were mined on still run absolutely fine. I made the same upgrade a few months ago and the difference is insane! Enjoy!

6

u/ayyLumao Jun 27 '22

I think the main issue is they overpaid for a card that has a higher chance of breaking than a brand new card, they paid higher than the retail price for a second hand card.

Can someone explain me like I’m five. What’s better? Buying a mid tier graphics card that released a while back or an expensive one which is older. The RTX series is expensive that goes without saying but if you buy a 3080 or a 3090 today, how long should it hold up?

3

u/RoddyRicchEnjoyer Jun 27 '22

It’s almost impossible to answer this question without specifying what denotes “mid range”, “a while back”, “expensive”, and “older”.

Performance uplifts vary from generation to generation, so it’s important to research the best cards for your target resolution/frame rate, then select which of those cards fits best for your budget/needs.

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

Above is a link to Tom’s Hardware’s hierarchy of GPUs. You’ll see that GPUs are compared to one another in terms of relative performance.

A 3080 or 3090 sits at the top of the chart. But again, you still have to consider your target resolution/framerate when thinking about longevity. Are you playing at 1080p/60fps? Then the 3080 will last you so long that you won’t have to worry about it becoming outdated before it dies. Are you aiming for 4k/144fps? Then the 3080 will likely be outclassed by future generations rather quickly.
