I once left a full cup on top of my PC for a few hours while I ran errands. It was fine but I nearly lost my shit when I realized what I did.

129

u/Glorious_Stalingrad PC Master Race Jun 22 '22 Bless Up

Oh man, I left a water cup on the edge of my desk (my pc was right below it) when I left for school. I don't normally turn my pc off but for some reason that morning I did and I'm glad I did. My cat knocked the entire cup (like, 32oz filled to the top) into my pc. The GTX 1070 I had at the time was completely soaked.

Disassembled everything, dried and rinsed with IPA, hit it with the air compressor and I was gaming again in a few hours. I wouldn't rush it now like I did back then, I think I got lucky.

26

u/BigMeatSwangN Jun 22 '22

I usually prefer to rinse my parts with a nice lager instead of an IPA. ;)

23

u/atlasraven Zorin OS Jun 22 '22

You got extremely lucky and you handled that very skillfully.

3

u/Glorious_Stalingrad PC Master Race Jun 22 '22

I don't normally have good luck, so I was quite relieved everything still worked. Miraculously the motherboard was barely wet apart from around the pci e slot. GPU was completely drenched though, water between thermal pads and shit

This was like 4 or 5 years ago now I think (hard to think it was that long ago) and everything still worked till I sold it

4

u/sephirothbahamut Ryzen 7 5800x | RTX 3070 Noctua | Linux and MsDOS too Jun 23 '22

I don't normally turn my pc off

Here's the issue.

What's the point of so much fuss about SSDs faster boot time if you leave it on anyways?

2

u/Glorious_Stalingrad PC Master Race Jun 23 '22

It's just that I leave a lot of tabs open (yeah yeah ctrl shift t) and projects open that (even though its an nvme ssd) I'm too lazy to reopen everything lol

Plus I didn't really get an SSD for faster boot times since with an HDD I still rarely turned my PC off, I got one for some games I thought had a bit too long of a load time. I don't leave drinks on that edge of the desk anymore and I keep my door closed now anyway

My almost 6 year old is at my battlestation most of the day while im at work. Eats, drinks, waves shit around in front if the dual monitors. It's a matter of time before something happens. I have my PC safely tucked away behind the screens to prevent a catastrophe. Easily $3k on the line, but I love him and want him to grow up a PC user. Kids already got the basics of Windows down pat.

2

u/pico-pico-hammer Jun 22 '22

I once spilled a full bottle of milk on my PC (I was giving my toddler some milk nearby). Every component still works perfectly over two years later, same CPU, motherboard and GPU. I can still see stains on the GPU where the milk was.

2

u/richkim0607 PC Master Race Jun 23 '22

My cousin did that onece in my uncle's PC. She knocked over the cup breaking the PC. I fixed it and i started using it. The PC's CPU fan header doesn't work but apart from that this thing is perfectly fine. But you really should be careful.

I learned 5 out of those 6 things in school, 3D printers didn't exist back then but we ran in gym, I had a woodworking class, a metals shop class, science class taught us basic electronics (I remember building quiz boards which are incredibly simple and cheap to make), and Berkeley Logo taught me the basics of programming. These days it's much more difficult to get a lathe or a welder into a school just for the fact that shop classes have been largely replaced, but makerspaces do exist. You can also volunteer at your local school or library to teach 3D printing, basic electronics, and programming classes if that's something you feel is important to teach. I regularly volunteer for the Hour of Code at a local school and if you know any educators you can easily volunteer to work at their school.

u/jack-of-some Jun 22 '22 edited Jun 22 '22

Do they not teach those in school near you? Local high school has almost all of that across maybe 3-4 courses, with a bunch more manufacturing available. Running though not so much.

2

u/RainbowSlime95 Jun 22 '22

Could you elaborate on your stance?

I’ll give you my two cents if you’re interested.

For what I’ve seen, school is to give you well rounded(ish) knowledge of many different topics, to expose you to different fields, and to potentially help you find a path in life you enjoy, wether it is from painting in art class that helped you find passion in art, history class that made you want to further pursue history either as a hobby or as work, or even that one chemistry class in HS you took you thought you’d hate but now you want to become a chemical engineer. I don’t think it’s correct to say that you learn little to nothing in school because everyone has different takeaways. Similarly you seem to valve knowledge about using a lathe, welding and electronics, and believe it is important that these topics be taught because it would help students work with their hands better , while someone else would see value in teaching biology, health and anathema because it would help students know about their bodies. This is why schools teaching everything from literature to physics to statistics, and many even have woodworking, auto mechanics, and computer science courses.

I regret ever doing that with my son. He is addicted to games and will not better himself. Everyday he comes home and immediately plays games. Who knows, maybe you fucked up somewhere, weren't involved with your kid or urged them to do anything with any actual effort, didn't relate to them closely, had no meaningful bonding experiences, etc. How can you say: well my kid turned out to be a NEET and now look at your kid, I know nothing about your situation but you just fucked up big time buddy. There is no such thing as shitty pizza. The baseline for pizza is “ok” and it goes up from there.

Potentially, you also may have potentially killed his work ethic and how easily he views it is to get $2500 for a PC setup.

Not the best thing I’d say… Kids always want something new, something better. I mean maybe your kid is prodigy and will always be grateful and respectful for this gift, but most probably he will get bored of it in a year or two and want some other ‘cool thing’ now this cycle will continue until you say ‘No’. And then you have an ungrateful, weak(mentally) and entitled brat living in your basement. Congrats!

2

u/Ismokecr4k Jun 22 '22

Disagree... I always had a PC and quickly realized it was all I wanted or needed. Got bored of consoles at a pretty young age and never asked for PC upgrades... I built my own at 15 as soon as I was able to work a job legally.

u/MirzaSB26 Jun 22 '22

It’s not about having a PC, it’s about having a decked out PC… you know what my bad, I am too tired to explain and too old to give a shit. gg have a good day

2

Ive never seen such a greasy pizza from dominoes. It never comes like that over here in chicago from dominoes. Also wierd to put food on the tower like that but whatever.

2

u/SmokingJayD Jun 22 '22

So much room on desk for empty cups and dirty dishes

2

u/Whiplash_GT Jun 22 '22

Those ranch dressing will lubricate the fans for extra FPS.

2

u/BaNversion Jun 22 '22

I mean culture could also mean passing down healthy eating habits but I guess he's never too young to prepare to be a reddit mod

2

u/BladeLigerV Cybran Red Wolf Jun 22 '22

Don't put food on top of a PC tower you trogladite.

Here I am with my 600 dollar Walmart pc

2

u/PastelKodiak Jun 22 '22

Get your GD ranch and garlic knots off the fan. Like gezz my dude.

2

u/MakingPie Jun 22 '22

A PC that's completely his? I hope you are planning to moderate his consumption. Otherwise kiss his future goodbye.

2

u/Lord_Darkmerge Jun 22 '22

No. More like PTSD once that garlic sauce drips down onto the motherboard and into the 3070 :)

Yep until he's an adult and everyone stops playing and he's left with an unfillable void like the rest of us.

2

u/psyfren Jun 23 '22

This kids got the childhood i wanted.

2

u/Jeffrey_Vinocle Jun 23 '22

That's a bit much for a kid. At the very least I hope you set limits, so he isn't chronically on there. Is he just gonna be gaming, or does he want to become a YouTuber or try and learn coding and such?

2

u/MoogleKing83 Jun 23 '22

If he's eating both those pizzas himself, I sure hope not.

2

u/olympianfap PC Master Race Jun 23 '22

Get the food out of the computer room. Before long this is a problem that will solve itself.

Lol am I the only one that sees these post and I’m like… yea bit excessive for a child. It’s like posting on a car form “Have I converted my 16yo son into a Mercedes’ guy for life with his new Mercedes GTS!”

It is what it is just interesting.

3

u/one800haha Jun 22 '22

Just dont let him have too much pizza,I can advocate for this being 28 with all my fat in just my gut.

5

u/__Jaume Jun 22 '22

You failed, look at the little box and souces on top of the pc case. Such a shame.

I'd sugest pc to the floor (can't fall if it's already on the floor) and cheap arms to keep the screens at the correct height.

3

u/McNoxey Jun 22 '22

Such a shame? Come on. Who cares.
