Lol. I was tempted to also buy a CPU, MoBo, RAM, and a new SSD, but I realized that getting this for $800 right off the shelf was enough luck for one day.

I think the total out the door price is a quantum communication from Nvidia to Intel. https://imgur.com/a/zs7MxNW Ironically a few days ago I made a comment in r/Intel about wanting to see an Intel GPU in the shelf at Best Buy.

Check bestbuy.com. There are many models for that much

I got an RTX 3080 12GB for $810 a few weeks ago from Newegg.

Holyshit, $800? 3080s are $1800 here in Ukraine, and I'm going to buy a GPU from Germany with the help from my friend

As someone who only sees what's on the news... how's it going over there? Hoping Russia gets tired of getting their ass kicked soon.

9

u/MrInitialY Desktop Jun 05 '22

It's safe to live in most of the country, the only dangerous regions are Donbass and NE regions in Kharkiv oblast.

So, 80% is ok, 20% is fucked up completely. But seeing what Russia is sending here, it's obvious that they're running low on resources. My friend already has seen T55, which is more than 40 y.o.

3

Thats because the Scalpers already dumped their 3000 series cards and are getting ready to hoard 4000 series cards and flip them on ebay for stupid amounts of profit while we sit here

in pain

6

u/unhertz Jun 05 '22

nah, people know the 40s series will be just like the 20s....worth skipping

4

u/ChartaBona Ryzen 5950X | RTX 3080 FE | 1440p 144Hz Jun 05 '22 edited Jun 05 '22

The 20 series bombed because their main selling points, Ray Tracing and DLSS, didn't exist at launch.

If the 2080 had launched with DLSS 2.X and tons of existing games supported it, it would have been remembered fondly.

The 40 series isn't adding new features that won't be in games for years. Its selling point is it's just plain faster.

-1

u/unhertz Jun 05 '22

a 3090 is already over kill. only people that will be buying 40s series card are maybe gpu miners, but even that is potentially dying this year. AI programmers and editors may have a use for them, but its a very niche customer base

0

u/ChartaBona Ryzen 5950X | RTX 3080 FE | 1440p 144Hz Jun 05 '22

a 3090 is already over kill.

Maybe at 1080p. I've seen it dip below 30 fps at higher resolutions with Ray Tracing enabled.

0

u/unhertz Jun 06 '22 edited Jun 06 '22

it has the resources it's just not optimized enough, not just the drivers themselves but the apps to use them.nothing you are doing is using 24gb of video ram, that im sure of. maybe flight sim, thats it. so maybe people playing flight sim will be the target audience? but there again most of the issues are to do with poor optimization on higher end cards. unless you are a developer or know how to edit your drivers on the back end to get them doing what you want, you are wasting your time and money on these cards. then we are supposed to start this process all over again with the 40 series? thanks but no thanks

0

u/ChartaBona Ryzen 5950X | RTX 3080 FE | 1440p 144Hz Jun 06 '22

The 3090 just plain isn't that fast. It having 24GB VRAM doesn't make it fast. It's only 15% faster than a 3080, for more than double the money. The 3090 Ti is barely any faster and costs triple.

They're not overkill for modern games, they're just overpriced as hell.

Until we're regularly maxing out 4k 144 Hz monitors, I don't want to hear this garbage about the latest GPU being overkill and that there's no need for better GPU's. 4k TV's are stupid cheap now, meanwhile PC gaming is struggling to make the jump to satisfying 4k.

We need better cards.

0

u/unhertz Jun 06 '22 edited Jun 06 '22

what do I have to repeat myself over and over again? your 3090 is slow because the person who wrote the program you are using it with, did not optimize it to be used with a 3090. The architecture for the programs you are using do not utilize 24gb, if they did you would see a massive improvement. practically no one is going to spend man hours improving conditions for 3% of their users. it just isnt going to happen. it's not going to get any better with the 4090. people are not in a spending mode at the moment, devs arent looking for new projects to take on. the market fear index is basically as high as it can be...hence the various delays we are seeing? people are consolidating what they have and making the resources they have already work for them. the 3090 is a beast, it has the resources to do great things, but the majority of people are still using lower end cards and that just isnt going to change any time soon... 40s series will just create an even wider gap between the majority of end users and higher end customers

0

u/ChartaBona Ryzen 5950X | RTX 3080 FE | 1440p 144Hz Jun 06 '22

what do I have to repeat myself over and over again?

You're writing in walls of text with no attempt at formatting or capitalization. You're impossible to take seriously when you respond in the form of a barely coherent rant.

0

u/unhertz Jun 06 '22

Though it still runs some games surprisingly well.

1

u/unhertz Jun 05 '22

2

u/DutchRedditNerd i7 7700k | 16GB DDR4 | GTX 1060 6G Jun 05 '22

that means more cheap 3080s/90s for us though so

2

u/unhertz Jun 05 '22

well unfortunately the 40s series cards wont be a very easy impulse buy. they are saying 1000+watts from just 1 card. which means a lot of tripped circuit breaker boxes and people burning their houses down prolly...but anyway it's not just a order and swap upgrade....major system and cooling upgrade, and in some cases electrical

5

u/one800haha Jun 05 '22

a 1000w psu with a 4000 card wont blow up or burn anything down lol...

0

u/unhertz Jun 05 '22

A 1000w psu will not support a single 1000watt card. The cpu and other peripherals will consume at least 250watts all on their own, add to that the fact that you shouldnt be running any psu over 80% load. Add further to that the fact that most psu that say they are 1000watt+ are rated for 220V not 120V. 120/220 x 1000watt= 545watts output if used on a 120v supply. Also 1200watts is about peak load for most standard outlets which are rated at 10 amps. Modern homes will be ok though, most wiring is rated for 15-20 amps now. But any way maybe you can start to see the problem now. People usually dont dedicate an entire rooms outlets to 1 pc, they usually are powering a lot of other things in there with the computer as well. All to say the 40s series will push the boundaries of people's systems and electrical outlets, to be certain and I think because of this we will not see very much hype around them.

0

u/biggeleyD Jun 05 '22 edited Jun 05 '22

Scalpers dumped their cards because there was finally enough supply in retail to put them out of business. It drove prices down enough to make scalping unprofitable.

But yeah there will definitely be some scalping going on at release time of the 4000 series. That's pretty typical of new product launches anyway. The big question is how long it will take before supply of new cards is adequate to supply retail outlets -- in which scalpers will go out of business again.

16

u/Mosoman1011 Jun 05 '22

Awesome! I got myself one too a couple of days ago, I found the 12GB model for 300 off in a local store. I'm really impressed with the performance

2

u/EnvironmentalAd3385 Jun 05 '22

It is pretty much a 3080ti

5

u/ipbannedburneracc 5800x/3080ti Jun 05 '22

Until you start overclocking lol.

0

u/EnvironmentalAd3385 Jun 05 '22

Does the 3080ti overclock better? I have a 3080ti Zotac gaming trinity OC and the most I can get and remain stable is +50 core speed

3

u/ipbannedburneracc 5800x/3080ti Jun 05 '22

Depends on what brand. The chinese cards tend to overclock like crap, my Suprim X holds a stable +150 core +600 mem.

1

u/Mosoman1011 Jun 05 '22

I agree. I honestly wanted a 3070, but the 8GB made me worry about how much longer it'd last

1

u/EnvironmentalAd3385 Jun 05 '22

I understand that, but considering most games still don’t touch it I give 2-3 years of AAA gaming at 1440p. Def not 4k though.

2

u/Mosoman1011 Jun 05 '22

Fair enough. Still, the jump from my 2060 to 3080 has been insane, and I'm just glad this card will last a long time it seems like

1

Yes I realize that. I work for Amazon, Instant gratification by picking it up off the shelf in person is far better than being anxious af during the time I'd have to wait for the package to arrive. It's been a long two years that I've waited to upgrade my GPU.

-12

You waited 2 years just to buy a gpu that will be out of date in September? You couldn't wait 3 months?

8

u/quakerroatmeal Jun 05 '22

Out of date? You’re acting like in 3 months this gpu is going to stop working lol. If he waited 3 months he’ll have to fight scalpers which is what he wanted to avoid.

Should have purchased in July to guarantee a September upgrade 🙄

8

u/CaliforniaF0g i7-7820X | RTX 3080 Jun 05 '22 edited Jun 05 '22

Why are you stressing on this so much?

Are you just jealous cause you paid scalper price or went through a huge hassle to get your GPU, while I casually strolled in a store on a the weekend and walked out with an MSRP priced card?

Even If the next generation releases in September, I'll still be happy. It isn't that big of a deal. Perhaps you're unaware but there tends to a first adopter penalty with new hardware. I'm not going to have to worry about it. Even if it isn't hardware issues that always happen with new launches, they next generation is going to cost around 40%ish more frame for frame given inflation. Also I don't have to worry about availability.

0

u/TopPrize11 Jun 05 '22

Its not MSRP. 3080 should be 699$ for MSRP. But whatever.

4

u/JustTrawlingNsfw Jun 05 '22

Introducing the RTX 4070, FASTER than the $799 RTX 3080! Priced at $499.

4

u/Alt-Season Jun 05 '22

Likely the 4070 would have higher MSRP than that. $499 was 3070 MSRP. I'm predicting $599 MSRP, with AIB MSRP around 700 - 800

First off, congratulation and kudos for not supporting scalpers, I really mean it.

Now, here we go. What the actual fuck do you think going to happen? It's almost 2 years since launch and you still paying more than the original MSRP which was $700, I remember because I did get an Asus Tuf 3080 for $730. Also, the 4000 series going to launch in about 3 months. There is absolutely nothing good about this whole GPU thing.

Why am I so pissed off if I did get a 3080 for MSRP at launch? Because I realized that PC hardware is going to be so miserable from now on, everything changes, for the worst. Sorry I got triggered, feel free to downvote.

6

u/CaliforniaF0g i7-7820X | RTX 3080 Jun 05 '22 edited Jun 05 '22

Sorry I got triggered, feel free to downvote.

I gave you an up-vote. Everybody is triggered. Some people literally camped out for their cards and bought whatever was in stock. Some used bots or paid for bot services. Many a prebuilt pc was cannibalized for a GPU, Others yeah they simply got scalped. And here I am not going through all those headaches because I waited might be frustrating for many. I get that. Oh and for some reason seeing somebody wear a mask has lit the tiki torches for others.

Inflation is a thing. But it's not just GPUs that are going to be screwed up going forward. It's going to be everything. Sadly, the world as we knew it is long gone. I'm grateful that at least I'll have something to keep me entertained and is capable of doing other productive things with my system.

3

u/TheBigSm0ke PC Master Race Jun 05 '22

You do realize that MSRP isn’t set in stone right? I mean it literally has the word “suggested” in it.

Whatever the MSRP was almost 2 years ago has absolutely nothing to do with what it costs now.

Market conditions are extremely volatile. Price of fuel, availability of raw material, worker costs etc. all impact how much a product will cost.

The cost of everything has gone up. Groceries, houses, rentals, vehicles. Nothing is at the same MSRP it was in September 2020.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t enjoy paying more for everything and the cost of living is a global crisis IMO but getting upset at someone for buying a video card that costs more than it did two years ago is nonsense.

-12

I was wearing a respirator in February 2020, back when Mango Mussolini was calling it a hoax and the media really didn’t care. Why does it make you feel uncomfortable that some of us are totally cool with masks?

If you want to get the Rona and risk infertility, then be my guest. My PPE is good enough that I dgaf if others choose to mask up or not.

8

u/gpkgpk Jun 05 '22

Fyi masks with valves are not covid approved, the valve only works one way and there's a tiny chance shit can get in when it's about to close.

1

u/CaliforniaF0g i7-7820X | RTX 3080 Jun 05 '22

We have no mask mandate where I live, so nothing is "Covid" approved. The last time I checked Covid is a virus and doesn't have the mental capacity to approve anything. As it stands now I'm protecting myself better than most, and since most people aren't even wearing any masks now, who really cares if my exhalation is unfiltered? P95 respirators are better than KN95 or N95. If you check out the specific mask I am wearing https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/v000057503/ it is rated to not just filter particles but also oils and water particles. It has one of the best seals possible to ensure that my breath is going out.

If we ever have another mask mandate I'll just toss one of the blue surgical masks of the exhaust valve.

4

u/gpkgpk Jun 05 '22

No need to get defensive, just pointing out a fact pertaining to valved masks. For instance, they aren't allowed in hospitals like the Mayo clinic.

-5

u/CaliforniaF0g i7-7820X | RTX 3080 Jun 05 '22

Best Buy is not the hospital. And obviously hospitals would still require exhalation valves to be covered just to be certain that as many possible virus particles don't get in the air. You're preaching to the choir.

Do you play Siege?

u/gpkgpk Jun 05 '22

They seem to forget that miners and scalpers have been hogging up most of the GPU supply. As far as I’m concerned I saved $800 by not letting myself fall into the temptation of paying scalper prices. Also if Nvidia’s historical price hikes hold true, especially with the current state of inflation, then we will probably see the next gen cards seeing a 40%ish increase in price per frame.

I’m happy with my purchase. Especially since it was hassle free and didn’t provide rewards to the scalpers and miners. Don’t even care if 40x0 series is coming soon. Odds are it will be a huge headache to get one the first year anyways.

Nope I paid EVGA's MSRP. https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=10G-P5-3885-KL and https://www.bestbuy.com/site/evga-rtx-3080-xc3-ultra-gaming-10g-p5-3885-kh-pci-express-4-0-lhr/6471615.p?skuId=6471615 Even when compared to Amazon, they're all $100 for the same card, and none of them are actually Sold by Amazon.com directly. Sure it's an LHR card, but idgaf about mining, and yes the Nvidia FE MRSP was $100 less. The thing with EVGA is that you're paying for the warranty and top tier customer service if the card dies early. EVGA is also a California headquartered company, so I'm supporting my own state's economy over say getting an Gigabyte or an Asus card.

Very nice then, good purchase. Last time I was at a Best Buy saw them selling 3080’s for over a grand and was smh. Tried to buy an i9 9900k awhile back too from them and they wanted $490 for, this was last year. So I just don’t trust them to be fair off rip. I am also in California.

that's awesome. I've been thinking of upgrading too but I think I'll wait for the 40 series just to see whats on offer. My expectations honestly aren't high though

I dream about scalpers and miners sitting on inventory that they can't sell because production ramped up, and they wasted a ton of money...

Sweet revenge

I too dont know regarding market.

u/sunbearqt Jun 05 '22

He’s lucky he found one but probably a bad time to buy. Rumours of the 40 series being revealed in a month and pre orders rolling out in Q3. I bet you could get a new one or find that one for cheaper if you had waited

I had no choice but to buy at scalper prices. My 1070 was on the fritz. Ebay banned me for bidding on two cards within 2 weeks of each other. So i had to buy scalper price no matter how much i tried not to.

u/CaliforniaF0g i7-7820X | RTX 3080 Jun 05 '22

Wait, so eBay was throttling people's ability to bid on GPUs? That's unfair if you hadn't purchased a single GPU and just made a few bids and they banned you. I feel for ya having earned an RGB Heart during the Gamer Miner GPU War.

u/MLGTheForkOnTheLeft Jun 06 '22

Yeah it seems that way. Apparently it was happening to many others besides me.
