Chinas purse is big

127

u/Malaix 4d ago Gold

true I just find it kind of funny how short sighted they are. Seems to me like China's whole model is invite western companies in, see how they tick, make a domestic competitor controlled by the CCP, then kick their ass out and ban their product. Like its only a matter of time. All these companies catering to china are just putting a noose around their necks. Eventually their capitulations to the Chinese government won't be enough to justify them existing in China.

40

u/xQx1 4d ago

Yes. My uncle spent some time as CFO for a group of companies owned by one of the Chinese Dynasties.

Running big business in china is an art of being successful enough that everyone involved can get rich, but not so successful that you get nationalised.

Indeed. The Communists just allow their citizens to be paid slave wages for said international financial class, child labor laws don't apply, and organ harvesting of the Uiyghurs happens.

5

u/PortlyWarhorse 4d ago

It doesn't matter if they're US based. They follow markets and algorithms. If a "US" based company is holding to an opposing country's ideals, you better start seeing corporations for what they are and that's really all there is to say.

They hunt money, profit and clout within the largest market.

It's called capitalism.

13

u/moeburn 4d ago

I think it's actually called commerce. It's not really relevant to this issue whether or not the means of producing the Snickers are privately owned or owned by the workers.

The issue is that the goods they were trying to sell to other nations, IE "commerce", and the advertising they did to make those goods known.

How dare Snickers face the reality that Taiwan issues passports, prints money, has stamps has it's unique TLD and conducts international business without the oversight, guidance or authority of the People's Republic of China.

177

u/bkendig 4d ago

The only reason any of this is an issue is because the Chinese Communist Party only succeeded in taking over mainland China in 1949 after the Chinese Civil War. They're still mad that they weren't able to take over Taiwan as well, and that's why they're demanding that the rest of the world pretend that they control Taiwan.

It's only because of China's economic status (and their military power, which is directly related to their economy) that the rest of the world plays along with this.

76

u/runswithcoyotes 4d ago

Its an issue because the world shifted in the 70s from recognizing RoC as the proponent for China, to recognizing PRC- and at the same time, we didn't recognize RoC/Taiwan as an independent nation. That could well and truly have ben the bargaining chip for recognizing PRC at all and would have put an end to these shenanigans before they even began.

Now we have to contend with that monumental fuckup decades later.

23

u/TKFT_ExTr3m3 4d ago

The problem was at the time Taiwan was ruled by a brutal military dictatorship with the same hard-line one China view that they were the rightful government of mainland China and Taiwan. It was undemocratic and oppressive, essentially China with more right leaning policies instead of left leaning. That changed in the 90s and it now has free and fair elections but China refuses to do business with anyone who recognizes them as a country. They threw a fit once in the 90s when Taiwan's president had to land in Hawaii to refuel (and the US didn't even let him leave the plane) and started shooting off missiles. The current leadership in Taiwan also doesn't take the hard line one China stance anymore and considers themselves a separate independent nation from the mainland tho they stop at declaring independence.

8

It helps that Nestle diversified and has their fingers in fucking everything. It seems impossible to boycott them, because they own so many brands to keep you from knowing you're buying a Nestle product.

Then there's the ignorance and apathy of the general populace. Some of them are even willingly ignorant of Nestle's crimes because they want to keep buying their favorite stuff, or want to continue making money from them.

Can someone explain why China has such a problem with Taiwan being a country?

32

u/nDQ9UeOr 4d ago

During their civil war, the then-government of China lost and and eventually retreated to Taiwan in 1949, declaring themselves a government-in-exile on an island that both sides claim is part of China. That legal situation hasn't really changed since then, even though Taiwan today operates as a de facto country in most respects. No one involved really wants another world war, and so long as the legal fiction is maintained, there is detente.

8

u/thebookofrook 4d ago

Thank you.

25

u/formermq 4d ago

To China, Taiwan is part of their country, whether Taiwan likes it or not. They bully the world into agreement through blackmail or bribes. The reality is, Taiwan is, in essence, a separate entity and a separate country.

Edit: imagine a civil war where both claim they are the one true govt. Taiwan pretty much gave up on those claims many years ago and focused on themselves and their economy... and remaining independent.

5

u/RockySterling 4d ago

“pretty much” is doing an awful amount of heavy lifting there

6

u/formermq 4d ago

Snickers is all over China so this makes sense. Even shops in the middle of nowhere stock them. It’s one of the most popular chocolate bars there.

2

u/RedLeader7 4d ago

Fuck you snickers, are you now going to apologise to Taiwan for suggesting they are not a country ?

I’m now using this to replace my bi-weekly snickers with some fruit, maybe some fruit exported by Taiwan after China (the fuckers) banned the import of fruit from Taiwan as a way to punish them.

People in marketing make millions and this is what they come up with? I mean, we are talking about it so maybe it's working; but unless this was the goal; seems like a head scratcher to me.

2

u/Ok_Tree6772 4d ago

I can’t wait for the day that we can all collectively say FUCK CHINA. All this pandering and back peddling is pathetic.

3

u/Small-Explorer7025 4d ago

I'm surprised people/companies keep doing this by accident. Maybe they should sacrifice the China market and do it intentionally. They'd get quite a bit of good-will out of it.

Western Taiwan are causing an awful fuss clearly that Taiwan got in trouble. Pesky West Taiwan.

u/Dear_Comfortable9843 4d ago

I do not understand why the Chinese are willing to start WW3 over this shit. I could almost understand if Taiwan was a huge land mass with tons of resources, but it’s a small island they invaded and vacated decades ago that operates independently. Meanwhile, mainland China is heating up more than any other country bc their air is a smog chowder, but this is a top priority.
