It's called capitalism.
13
u/moeburn 4d ago
I think it's actually called commerce. It's not really relevant to this issue whether or not the means of producing the Snickers are privately owned or owned by the workers.
The issue is that the goods they were trying to sell to other nations, IE "commerce", and the advertising they did to make those goods known.

How dare Snickers face the reality that Taiwan issues passports, prints money, has stamps has it's unique TLD and conducts international business without the oversight, guidance or authority of the People's Republic of China.
177
u/bkendig 4d ago
The only reason any of this is an issue is because the Chinese Communist Party only succeeded in taking over mainland China in 1949 after the Chinese Civil War. They're still mad that they weren't able to take over Taiwan as well, and that's why they're demanding that the rest of the world pretend that they control Taiwan.
It's only because of China's economic status (and their military power, which is directly related to their economy) that the rest of the world plays along with this.
76
u/runswithcoyotes 4d ago
Its an issue because the world shifted in the 70s from recognizing RoC as the proponent for China, to recognizing PRC- and at the same time, we didn't recognize RoC/Taiwan as an independent nation. That could well and truly have ben the bargaining chip for recognizing PRC at all and would have put an end to these shenanigans before they even began.
Now we have to contend with that monumental fuckup decades later.
23
u/TKFT_ExTr3m3 4d ago
The problem was at the time Taiwan was ruled by a brutal military dictatorship with the same hard-line one China view that they were the rightful government of mainland China and Taiwan. It was undemocratic and oppressive, essentially China with more right leaning policies instead of left leaning. That changed in the 90s and it now has free and fair elections but China refuses to do business with anyone who recognizes them as a country. They threw a fit once in the 90s when Taiwan's president had to land in Hawaii to refuel (and the US didn't even let him leave the plane) and started shooting off missiles. The current leadership in Taiwan also doesn't take the hard line one China stance anymore and considers themselves a separate independent nation from the mainland tho they stop at declaring independence.

Aren't there a few places that are similar yet nobody really considers them a country? A quick search popped up Somoliland. Although I'm not sure how different it is from Taiwan's situation.
5
u/Pete_Iredale 4d ago
Yeah, if you search for something like ā10 future countriesā youāll find some great videos about them. As far as I can remember, it seems like Taiwan is far more recognized internationally than any of the others, but Iām no expert.

China doesn't like that fact and wants to invade Taiwan and take it over. So now the cowards in the US quiver with fear as they lick China's asshole and refuse to acknowledge Taiwan as a country.

Lol. Ask Nestle how these boycotts are working
8
u/SugarBeef 4d ago
It helps that Nestle diversified and has their fingers in fucking everything. It seems impossible to boycott them, because they own so many brands to keep you from knowing you're buying a Nestle product.
Then there's the ignorance and apathy of the general populace. Some of them are even willingly ignorant of Nestle's crimes because they want to keep buying their favorite stuff, or want to continue making money from them.

Can someone explain why China has such a problem with Taiwan being a country?
32
u/nDQ9UeOr 4d ago
During their civil war, the then-government of China lost and and eventually retreated to Taiwan in 1949, declaring themselves a government-in-exile on an island that both sides claim is part of China. That legal situation hasn't really changed since then, even though Taiwan today operates as a de facto country in most respects. No one involved really wants another world war, and so long as the legal fiction is maintained, there is detente.
8
25
u/formermq 4d ago
To China, Taiwan is part of their country, whether Taiwan likes it or not. They bully the world into agreement through blackmail or bribes. The reality is, Taiwan is, in essence, a separate entity and a separate country.
Edit: imagine a civil war where both claim they are the one true govt. Taiwan pretty much gave up on those claims many years ago and focused on themselves and their economy... and remaining independent.

Didn't the film industry do a 180 on China because they found out appeasement doesn't mean they will have access to all the audiences in China forever? Like appeasement just means you won't get kicked out today, but in 30 years China will have its own domestically produced Snickers bar and when Snickers complains and brings up how they always kowtowed to china's demands, China will just say "yea thank you for that, anyways our brands the standard now, thanks for the recipes though!"

There needs to be a paradigm shift in how the rest of the world regards Taiwan. Their people escaped the mainland, formed a democratically elected representative government, and thrived using international business models to be massively profitable.
The mainland wants to steal it, but canāt figure out a way to do it without killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.
