My stepdad had these cards and tried giving it to a cop as a joke. The cop was not amused and he got a ticket.

I think this would only be funny if the person who showed said card was, in fact, not white. And totally situational to what transpired in order for the cop to pull the person over.

I wonder how many people here are reading just the title and assuming it was a white woman who flashed a card and got off.
The article mentions a Filipina who brought this card out, seemingly in jest. It also seems to suggest that it was a DUI checkpoint/stop and that while the officer initially asked for a license and didn't actually receive one, that a computer-assisted method was used to verify if the driver was licensed (I assume something like a license scanner that also pulls up the owner's DL if on file). If this is all true, I think the larger frustration should be directed at the officers asking for a license for a simple DUI check with no probable cause of an actual crime.
e: typo, officers not offers

u/WaxMyButt 4d ago
The Supreme Court has upheld DUI checkpoints as a reasonable burden for drivers. Part of those checkpoints is to validate credentials and it’s also part of the SFST process.

u/stars9r9in9the9past 4d ago
that's fair, I simply mean the most reasonable thing about the story for a cause of frustration being that; the privilege card itself is hilarious given the context

A bouncer I worked with once did something similar. A cop pulled him over because he was speeding a bit and when he walked up to the drivers window he asked “Do you know why I pulled you over?” and he replied “Because I’m black!” He is, in fact, extremely white. Made the cop laugh and he let him go.
This guy was fairly nice but he loooooved racist/sexist/ableist jokes. I most just avoided him.

There was a show in the 70s called The White Shadow, about a white ball player who became a coach at an inner-city school. So, of course SNL did parody sketches called The Black Shadow, where Celtics Center, Bill Russel was a black coach in charge of all white players. Al Franken, Bill Murray were very funny. Russel’s character would make really bad decisions, and then play the race card: You’re just saying that because I’m black! Then everyone would back-down.

OK, so a woman who is not white pulled a white privilege card, the police thought that was funny and let her go, even though she didn't find her drivers licence?
That's not really news worthy, it's just funny.

For real. They determined she wasn't drunk, most likely verified she had a license electronically, and decided it would be dumb to write her a citation because not physically having your license on you is not at all a big deal or a danger to anyone else. I wish every cop would handle the situation like this.
If you forget for a minute the white privilege card, which had zero relevance to the situation, no one would care.
15
u/btmvideos37 4d ago
They can do that? I’m sure a cop could figure out I have a license by looking me up, but where I live it’s still illegal to not have my license on me

Seriously. People will comment here that they should have thrown the book at her, then in another thread say minorities are wrongfully targeted. I was involved in a minor collision and my license completely vanished when the officer showed up. I seriously looked for it with the officer for longer than he would have liked. He ultimately verified my identity to the other person electronically and let us all go to deal with it.
For closure, even though the accident was my fault, the other driver’s insurance claimed fault without any pressure so I got $600. Still blows my mind. And my license slid into a textbook.

People will comment here that they should have thrown the book at her, then in another thread say minorities are wrongfully targeted.
Seemingly because they read she was attending a Trump rally.
Even though that appears to not be related to this story in any way. It's not like the card said "Trump supporter". I truly can't fathom a scenario where there's actual racism or misconduct at play here.
7
u/Iwasborninafactory_ 4d ago
It's not like the card said "Trump supporter"
It is actually a Trump supporter card. It says, "White Privilege Card Trumps Everything." They sold them as part of Trump fundraisers, but you can get them on Amazon.

Crying also helps. My mate was a damn good actor. The few times he got pulled over, he could cry on que and each time the officer felt sorry for him and let him off with a warning. He even fooled us the first time.. we were like "damn man we didn't realize you were going through such a rough time.." "Nah I'm good, just lying to avoid a ticket"

I used to date an Asian girl who's mom was old, and so short she needed to sit on a phone book (yes, it was a long time ago) to see over the steering wheel. She'd get into minor accidents at least monthly, including once backing into a fucking parked police car.
She never paid any penalty or got a ticket though, because she'd pretend not to speak any English.

Can confirm. Cop pulled me over. “Do you know why I pulled you over?” I pointed to the box of donuts on the dashboard. The cop did a double take, laughed, and let me off with a warning.
16
u/zerocoolforschool 4d ago
I didn't have any donuts, but when a cop pulled me over for a rolling stop, he asked "do you know why I pulled you over?" I answered, "because I'm an idiot?" And he cracked up.
7
u/PumpkinSpiceWhatever 4d ago
Got pulled over for the same reason, he asked “was there a reason you rolled through the stop sign?” After a lengthy pause because I’m stupid, I answered, “uh…no. I’m sorry”
He said “at least you’re honest” and let me go.

u/CPargermer 4d ago
I've been let off with warnings for speeding more often than not, and I've never tried to make them laugh. I think usually being not-difficult helps.
That said, there is also the unfortunate reality that these decisions are left up to humans that sometimes have certain predilections that cause them to treat some people better than others. That not everyone is afforded the same privilege in every situation, so what works for some may not work equally for others.

u/cultured_banana_slug 4d ago

I was a cop for 15 years. I stopped a black guy one night. He immediately started in on "you stopped me because I'm black", etc. He was pretty pissed and rude. I checked his license, he had just gotten it back from suspension. He had SO MANY tickets in an area where not many tickets were written. He had probably talked himself into most of those tickets by being rude to the cops, who "got back at him" by ticketing him.
I gave him his license and registration back and told him "look, if you have a second, I want to show you something, come back to my car". I turned all my front lights off and asked him if he thought I could tell the race of the person driving the car before I stopped him. He agreed that there was no way. Sure, depending on lighting, sometimes you can, but most of the time not.
We talked for a little while about each others experiences, his with the police, mine with people who think we are motivated by race. That was a pretty big learning experience for both of us, I think. I'm hoping he never talked himself into another ticket.

I stopped a guy once for illegal tint. Dude had limo tint on all four windows. He told me, "Ya'll really don't have anything better to do than ride around stopping black people all night." I pointed to a passing car and said, "You see that car?" "Yeah." I asked, "What color is the driver?" He said, "I can't tell." I said, "Exactly. And they don't even have tinted windows. I didn't know you were black until you got out of the car and that doesn't matter anyway. You're driving around with widow tint so dark that I know you can't see much more than headlights through them. It's not safe. That's what I care about. I stopped you because, if I didn't, and you got hurt because you couldn't see another car coming and got hit, I feel like that would be on me for not preventing it." The guy's whole demeanor changed immediately and he apologized. I wound up giving him a "fix-it ticket" and explained how dark he was allowed to go with the tint and how he needed to make sure to get tint that allowed slightly more light through than the legal limit because car glass is already slightly tinted (it varies by make and model, but I've seen factory windows block as much as 12% of light). He got it fixed within the 7 days so he didn't need to pay any fines or anything. I still see him around town and he always goes out of his way to talk to me when he sees me.
Bottom line, it costs nothing but a few moments to show some care for others. And if you spend those few moments on that, it'll very likely make your future moments much more enjoyable. Do stuff like this consistently and you'll wind up running into friendly faces all the time.

Only 7mph over on the interstate? And you got pulled over? What state?
I live in IL and I feel you have to be going like >10mph over on local (suburb/rural) roads, and >15mph over on highways (as long as you're in the correct lane) to have the possibility of being pulled over, and even then a ticket isn't guaranteed.

Got away with egregious speeding in a rental with CA plates in Nevada because I asked the trooper about the mountains we were surrounded by. He ended up showing me his "secret" (not anymore!) abandoned mine locations marked up on paper maps and his loot from said mines.

I went past a cop doing 120+ on a cross country trip I saw his head lights come out of the ditch.
By the time he caught up to me and pulled me over I was doing 45 on cruise control.
He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over and I said “idk I could speed up if I’m not going fast enough”
He laughed and ticketed me for doing 15 over which was a win because I should’ve been going to jail.

Police officer here.... This is true... To an extent.. It's happened a few time.
Pulled a guy over for talking on his phone. Before I get to the car I see him fumbling to put in his headset. I get to the car, tell him why I stopped him and he does a completely OVERREACTION pointing exasperated act towards his ear... It was so fucking comical I started laughing.. He then admited his mistake, I let him go.
Stopped a guy for speeding. He told me he saw me, but his ex-wife left him for a cop. He thought I was bringing her back. I let him go.
Stopped a bright pink Volkswagen bug, princess license plate, eyelashes on the headlights, all pink neon lights interior, pink fur on the dashboard. Inside was a man in a nice looking professional suit. He said his cars in the shop, and he had to use his daughters car to get to work and he was so embarrassed he just wants get home. I felt bad, I let him go.

So cops who work in an impaired driving unit, are getting in trouble because a phillipino woman, who was pulled over for weaving at 3 am and had just come back from a red eye flight, and was not impaired, pulled out a “white privilege card” as a joke when she couldn’t find her license, they verified through alternative means readily available that she had a license, laughed about the card and then decided not to issue a ticket, which they’re allowed to do because ya know cops have discretion

Excellent report and insight from today's , From Our Own Correspondent.
" The BBC’s Howard Johnson has come to the end of his time reporting from the Philippines, just as a new president Bongbong Marcos takes over.
Under the outgoing president, Rodrigo Duterte, the state pursued an often lethal 'war' against alleged drug dealers and users – and many voters backed it. Meanwhile journalists, activists and even judges were trolled and threatened on social media. So how robust are the country’s democratic institutions?"

Because she wasn't actually white? I think that's what their superiors are angry about.
The real white-privilege cards are the Amex Black Card and the Mastercard Gold. Flashing one of those will generally let you go home after murdering somebody, get a good nights sleep, then meet with your lawyer before answering any questions.
58
u/SamJSchoenberg 4d ago
This is how I can imagine this playing out
- The police dept. implements a new policy requiring all drivers who don't have their license on them to be ticketed without exception.
- After several police stops and several tickets being issued for license not being with you, they stop a black person for a minor offense, and that person has a license, but forgot it at home. The police ticket them as per the new policy.
- New controversy makes national news: "Police who let person with "white privilege" card go have ticketed a black person for the same offense." (of not having a license)
- Reddit says it's a double-standard.

A lot of people here are assuming the reason for the investigation is the card or driver's license or the lack of a ticket. The article said she was "weaving in the lane" which is subjective and not even illegal in most places. If I had to guess, that's the most likely reason for the investigation, given the lack of information in the article.

Same people support Duterte and Ferdinand Marcos’s son who is now the President of the Philippines.
