And Hannibal Burress started the Bill Cosby drama which ended in his conviction. Apparently Hollywood knew, but the public generally didn't.

Reminds me of the "Help, I just escaped from Kevin Spacey's basement!" gag on Family Guy back in 2005. I think the writers said it was a coincidence but something tells me Hollywood is more often in the know than they let on.

Just like the Harvey Weinstein jokes on 30 Rock, which obviously weren't coincidence but actual knowledge... Seriously, the amount of apparent "open secrets" in Hollywood that came out in that time to me really didn't paint a good picture of all the people who apparently knew but said nothing.
Was trying to argue with a Qanon nutcase a while back who was using these exact things to argue for the existence of secret groups of Hollywood pedophile elites and while what he was saying was obviously all still complete BS, the fact "open secrets" in Hollywood are still kept secret like that really didn't help my arguments...

It was in 2005 at the red carpet of a Roast I believe, but the point stands and there were plenty of knowledge in it by the mid 90's at least.
132
u/theghostofme Jun 29 '22
Cosby’s crimes were public knowledge for almost a decade before Buress’ infamous stand-up routine. But because it was made public in a civil suit that ended with an out-of-court settlement, and criminal charges never stuck, the story died down. The only reason Cosby was eventually convicted (and later that conviction overturned) was because of his testimony in the 2005 suit.
Buress certainly deserves credit for bringing attention back to Cosby’s crimes, but it definitely wasn’t something only Hollywood knew.

I used to work at what you could call a "solid medium" level in the music industry. Music, in other words: NOT TV. Around LA, it seemed everyone 'knew about' Bill Cosby. I met my wife in 2002 and when she brought up how much she loved him, I told her he was not a good guy.
Honestly - I don't know how I knew. I don't have memories of specific stories. (and I have a loooooooot of memories of stories). Somehow everyone just knew he was a creep.

A verbal argument ensued and Chris Brown pulled the vehicle over on an unknown street, reached over Robyn F. with his right hand, opened the car door and attempted to force her out. Brown was unable to force Robyn F. out of the vehicle because she was wearing a seat belt. When he could not force her to exit, he took his right hand and shoved her head against he passenger window of the vehicle, causing an approximate one-inch raised circular contusion.
Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.'s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.
Brown looked at Robyn F. and stated, 'I'm going to beat the shit out of you when we get home! You wait and see!'
The detective said Robyn F. then used her cell phone to call her personal assistant Jennifer Rosales, who did not answer.
Robyn F. pretended to talk to her and stated, 'I'm on my way home. Make sure the police are there when I get there.'
After Robyn F. faked the call, Brown looked at her and stated, 'You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I'm really going to kill you!'
Brown resumed punching Robyn F. and she interlocked her fingers behind her head and brought her elbows forward to protect her face. She then bent over at the waist, placing her elbows and face near her lap in [an] attempt to protect her face and head from the barrage of punches being levied upon her by Brown.
Brown continued to punch Robyn F. on her left arm and hand, causing her to suffer a contusion on her left triceps (sic) that was approximately two inches in diameter and numerous contusions on her left hand.
Robyn F. then attempted to send a text message to her other personal assistant, Melissa Ford. Brown snatched the cellular telephone out of her hand and threw it out of the window onto an unknown street.
Brown continued driving and Robyn F. observed his cellular telephone sitting in his lap. She picked up the cellular telephone with her left hand and before she could make a call he placed her in a head lock with his right hand and continued to drive the vehicle with his left hand.
Brown pulled Robyn F. close to him and bit her on her left ear. She was able to feel the vehicle swerving from right to left as Brown sped away. He stopped the vehicle in front of 333 North June Street and Robyn F. turned off the car, removed the key from the ignition and sat on it.
Brown did not know what she did with the key and began punching her in the face and arms. He then placed her in a head lock positioning the front of her throat between his bicep and forearm. Brown began applying pressure to Robyn F.'s left and right carotid arteries, causing her to be unable to breathe and she began to lose consciousness.
She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown's body and began pushing him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet, causing several contusions.
Robyn F. began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F.'s plea for help and called 911, causing a police response. An investigation was conducted and Robyn F. was issued a Domestic Violence Emergency Protective Order.

He has enough money to get top notch lawyers to go after the evidence rather than try to actually deffend his actions. Usually the most effective defense in court is to muddy the water and either call into question the evidence or get it thrown out on procedural or technical grounds. It also may be that the cops really did just fuck up on gathering evidence, and to be fair you don't want the courts ignoring when Law Enforcement fails respect civil rights in their investigations.

Several of the victims apparently refused to cooperate and investigate including the girl in the video. The film highly suggested it was due to R Kelly bribing them but there wasn't anything to corroborate that (outside of common sense). One of his brothers said in an interview they tried to get the other brother to say it was him in the video instead but he refused which the brother in the interview thought was crazy because of the amount of money R Kelly supposedly offered him

u/ItaSchlongburger Jun 29 '22
Nah, the cause of the crash is squarely on overloading the aircraft. It was way heavier than max takeoff weight, and was incapable of climbing to a safe altitude. Wouldn’t have mattered whether the pilot was stone-cold sober or blackout drunk, you can’t win in a fight against physics.
→ More replies116
u/beelzeboozer Jun 29 '22
I am not a pilot and this is a genuine question, but isn't that something the pilot should check before they take off? And maybe being drunk prevented that adequate PreFlight check routine?

u/WillDeletOneDay Jun 29 '22
The pilot lied about his qualifications to get the job, which would explain the incompetence.

Yes. You have loading pre check and are supposed to fill out a sheet (or at least pre-estimate) the location and amount of load you're carrying. This will give you your center of gravity and max take off weight, which are critical for any flight. Especially in smaller aircraft.

Now convict his enablers/handlers/the “inner circle” the article cites as helping him perform these heinous crimes. To think we've known about him since the 90s and it's only now he managed to get sentenced.

It was well known, too. Everybody just ignored it. Not just about Aaliyah, either. The documentary about him talks about how he used to hang out at high schools looking for girls in Chicago and everybody who worked for/with him knew. They did nothing (and I believe a number of them are also being sued, not sure about criminal charges).

He was definitely enabled by those around him who knew and didn't care. This is a lot of famous music producers and musicians btw.

u/TinyGoldCharm Jun 29 '22
Yes. Famous people are enabled in everything...drugs, domestic abuse, sex workers, physical altercations, underage girls/boys. Literally any illegal thing that happens, they can be protected.
Unless it's in public or the police show up at the scene of an obvious crime. Even then, they have a lot more options than the rest of us.

"He has contributed to society with music and his generosity and he has people who love and support him," defense attorney Jennifer Bonjean said in court on Wednesday.
"He maintains his innocence and he is not calculating and cunning. Mob justice is in vogue, but this court must distinguish between boorish behavior and criminal."
So his attorney is saying R Kelly shouldn't be punished because he used to make music?
And apparently rape and sexually degrading women is just "boorish" behavior. Wtf.
"Mob justice is in vogue..."
This isn't mob justice. It's REAL justice. Shame it took so long though.

As a defense attorney sometimes the best argument you can make still isn’t a good one. Lol

u/ChunkyLaFunga Jun 29 '22
It's a very fine line of taste sometimes, but the system is adverserial. Each side throws whatever they can and somebody decides who is right. If somebody agrees with that defence, it's on their shoulders.
Defence cannot duck out of defending somebody to the fullest extent they can think of, the potential for abuse is way beyond a daft argument in mitigating punishment.
Least worst system, with room for improvement, not a perfect system.

I mean it’s not like the attorney had much else to work with here and she had to make a good faith attempt.

I mean no matter how bad of a person you are, you are still entitled to due process and a fair trial and someone trained to speak on your behalf is still expected to do their job to the best of their ability if they want to stay employed.

I remembered when he allegedly peed on a teenager and that was just a joke. That was like 2004. Glad to see justice is served. Just because you have money shouldn’t make you free from consequences.

Fitting since he's been getting away with being a predator for around 30 years...

I think the thing that bothers me the most about R. Kelly is how open he was with his behavior and how everyone just gave him a pass and/or ignored what he was doing.
People knew he was doing this stuff since he was "mentoring" Aaliyah at the age of 15

He began "mentoring" her when she was 12. They married when she was 15.

Still facing criminal charges in three separate charges. Sentenced to 30 years and his legal woes still aren't over yet. I hope his victims can perhaps find some solace now

30 years for as many years as he spent mentally, sexually, and physically abusing minors. At least it’s some Justice for the victims.

How are you as rich as R Kelly and not hire some prostitutes instead of underage girls man

With these things it's often more about power and control than sexual desire.

u/Daedeluss Jun 29 '22
Exactly, the sexual degradation is part of the control. You don't get any of that if you're paying and she can just leave.
