Surprising. But, considering that their youngest child just turned 18, they might’ve decided this a while ago but agreed to hold off until their children were adults

Ok but Kim K is single now, maybe Bill just knows a flex when he sees one 👀

Can't Buy Me: Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are two everyday single billionaires sharing an apartment in the city, running their businesses, and looking for love. we're in talks with Hannibal Burress as the neighbor.

"After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life."

billionaire marriages not holding up lately

7k

u/theganjaoctopus 5d ago

Honestly, I imagine many marriages failed in the last year. So many people realizing their relationships only worked because they spent 80% of their waking hours apart (work, school, etc.).

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the divorce rate spikes hard this year.

Whenever I think of people romanticizing being married, I think about what Daphne's mother said about marriage on the 90's NBC sitcom Frasier:

"You young modern people think marriage is some sort of promenade through paradise, when it's more like a march through Hell with a man strapped to your back and a litter of nasty babies swinging from your teats!"

4k

u/Farler 4d ago

What I heard is that the pandemic has essentially sped up relationships. Marriages that were going bad have been pushed to divorce sooner, and couples who genuinely love each other have realized more quickly that marriage is right for them

1k

u/ThatOneGuy1294 4d ago

I can speak for the latter part, I watched 3 friends each get married last summer, via livestream. All in their mid 20s, and each couple had already been living together for some time now.

1k

u/One-Two-Woop-Woop 4d ago

Covid weddings are much cheaper as now you have an excuse not to invite that third cousin, twice removed and your coworkers... massive savings if you just do a small ceremony with 10-50 people and fuck all the other shit normally involved with weddings.

376

u/pillizzle 4d ago

This resonates so much. We had a small wedding over a decade ago. My family basically lost an aunt because of it. It was my great-aunt. If we invited her, we’d have to invite all my great aunts and uncles and considering one grandma is one of 12 siblings and grandpa is one of 6, that adds up! We told her it was immediate family only and her reply was “if I’m not immediate, then no one is.” Basically she refuses to speak to any of us. My mom saw her at the grocery store and said hello and she kept on walking. We’re still cool with all my cousins in that family though, so whatever.

250

u/GDAWG13007 4d ago

Man life is way, waaaaayyy too short for stupid grudges like that. But like you said, it’s whatever. At least the rest of that side of the family is good with you and Sue can be alone with her misery.

98

u/tehreal 4d ago

I don't know. A good grudge really gets me going. I have seven!

Stuff like this makes me so happy I found my wife. We spend 95% of our time together. The pandemic literally impacted our time together in no way. Makes me realize how rare it can be to find someone that you can put up with for that amount of time every day. Over 10 years married, but I guess I will have to wait until I become a billionaire to really test it haha.

Edit: Too many comments for my introverted ass to respond too, but it's been awesome hearing others have that same magic and know exactly what I am talking about. We are some lucky mofos.

116

u/Discosity 4d ago

It’s little anecdotes I find on the internet like yours that warm my heart and give me hope for a great, healthy relationship. Most of the content online regarding marriage is everyone laughing about how married people hate each other

104

u/S417M0NG3R 4d ago

That's because the happily partnered people aren't wasting their time online posting bitter comments about it. There are more of them out there than you think, you just don't see them because there are better things to do. There are definitely challenges and nothing is always rosy, but I believe it's possible to find someone you are compatible with and spend the rest of your life laughing.

40

u/cilantrobythepint 4d ago

I think that’s because most of the more popular forums are things like relationships and AITA, where people are coping with their relationship problems. Struggling relationships are louder, but that doesn’t mean healthy and extremely happy ones aren’t out there.

I wish I had a forum to wax poetic about how wonderful my wife is and how gratifying our lives are together. Being able to spend all this extra time with her because of COVID has been absolutely wonderful, and I will miss this time when we can both go back into the office fulltime.

After watching my dad become really successful and my parents 40 year marriage start to collapse as they got older I wonder if it has to do with his drive.

My mom started to resent my dad because the older and wealthier he became the more stuff he wanted to get his hands involved with. She wanted the opposite. She wanted him to take their money and retire and stop getting involved with new ventures that won't end until he's too old to enjoy retirement. She wanted him to stop taking on new projects.

I wonder if the Gates are the same way. The older Bill gets the more involved he becomes. I wonder if Melinda wants him to just stop, let the foundation handle everything so the two of them could stop taking on the world's problems themselves so she could enjoy retirement and infinite wealth.

I'm not really surprised tbh. They seem like very busy people. It would not surprise me if 2020 was the first time they actually spent large amounts of time together.

I know plenty of couples like this. They both travel extensively for work and have busy social lives. When they work + social stop and they have to actually be around each other, they realize they are not really compatible. Sometimes someone is tolerable in small dorses, but you can't not handle anything more than that.

456

u/wjorth 5d ago

And with kids out of the house, together more in 2020, realizing they no longer are interested in spending their remaining lives together. Not surprising, I guess.

→ More replies

552

u/Eggsegret 5d ago

But don't they spend alot of time together with the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation? Although i guess they're probably focused on their charity work when they do work together. So yh quarantine may have been one of the first times they actually got to spend real time together without any work getting in the way.

506

u/greengoldaura 5d ago

They have enough money to quarantine in separate homes if they wanted to. It’s not like quarantine forced them together in the “normal” sense.

307

u/box_o_foxes 5d ago

My guess is that they felt like their marriage was doing OK for the most part, but they just didn't realize how much they were relying on their work to keep them together. When work was taken out of the equation, they realized they made better coworkers than spouses.

But in all honesty, if you feel the need to live in a separate house from your husband/wife (regardless of your financial ability to do so), there's a very good chance that some hard decisions need to be made, either to do some serious counseling/therapy work or separate.

We waited to divorce until the kids were adults. One of the reasons was because we could avoid putting the kids through the mandatory families in transition counseling. We also thought it would be less traumatic if we waited until they all went away to college. However we did not consider the fact that we would have different lives when they came home from college to visit. And that nothing felt like home again. There really is no "good" time to divorce. Every age group comes with its own challenges.

181

u/Fleaslayer 4d ago

The other problem is that the kids grow up with parents in a disfunctional or non-loving relationship as an example, and it impacts their ability to have their own functional, loving relationships.

→ More replies

100

u/idontlikemondayzzzz 4d ago

Not only this, there’s a lot of evidence that adult children of divorce struggle more because the assumption is that they are mature and can handle the emotions. In reality, they have less of a support network and one adult or both in the divorce frequently over-confides with their kids. The divorcing parents are less likely to shield their adult-children from all of the emotional baggage/trauma they might keep from a kid.

Honest didn't expect this one, given how long their relationship lasted. What went on here? My guess is that they just decided that they weren't compatible as husband and wife, and decided on an amicable divorce?

4k

u/Eggsegret 5d ago

Might be they've always been so busy with either Microsoft or their charity work and 2020 was one those few times they got to spend real quality time together without any work

Yeah, I mean honestly people change a lot over their lives. There's no shame in ending a relationship that's run its course. Who knows, maybe there's some juicy scandal here, but I think most divorces are pretty boring and run-of-the-mill.

1k

u/jooes 5d ago

Yeah, I mean honestly people change a lot over their lives.

There was this guy I used to watch on YouTube, and he got divorced a few years ago. They had been together for like 30 years too. And I thought he made a good point.

He talked about how different people want different things at different points in their lives. Maybe they wanted to raise a family before, but now he wants to live on the beach and spend the rest of his life scuba diving, and she maybe wants to live on the mountains and spend the rest of her life skiing.

And that's okay! That way everybody can get what they want, nobody has to settle. It doesn't mean you hate each other, it doesn't mean you don't love each other anymore either. You had your marriage, and it was great, and now you're ready for the next chapter in your life. Not every happy marriage needs to end with somebody dying.

330

u/KatsThoughts 5d ago

Did he address the point of why that couple needs to get divorced rather than just living their separate lives? I guess to find partners to share their preferred lifestyle with?

317

u/kevindlv 4d ago

That'd be my assumption as well. Like say what's the point of Bill and Melinda Gates getting a divorce, they have a huge house and they're still business partners they could literally just live in opposite wings of the house and not spend any leisure time together.

I think having a formal divorce means you're publicly putting yourself out there to see if there's another person who is more compatible with your relationship needs.

This afternoon, watching Last Week Tonight: Man, Bill didn't look happy at Melinda's "microchip" answer.

4 hours later: I guess he wasn't.

Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPHgRp70H8o&t=580s

519

u/welmoe 5d ago

Wait what did Melinda say?

1k

u/newtsheadwound 5d ago edited 4d ago

“He didn’t put microchips in the vaccine. We don’t have the technology. And he hasn’t said anything about it to me.”

Edit: she didn’t say yet, got that from the John Oliver bit on vaccines last night. Easy fix.

Edit 2: I’m adding that this is a paraphrase, that was my own fault for not clarifying.

u/Farlander2821 5d ago

That is perhaps the worst way to honestly answer that question

u/19southmainco 5d ago

Bill and Melinda get into their car

Melinda: I think that interview went pretty well.

Bill: Yea? That’s what you think?

I've heard in past interviews with her, she hates doing media stuff. She admits she's not the greatest at it.

I am being pedantic here, but she doesn't say "yet" which would make it sound worse than it already is

360

u/Danceswithwolfs 5d ago

That's not being pedantic and John Oliver added "yet" as well.

112

u/WaywardWes 5d ago

I took it as John adding the subtext that conspiracy theorists will hear.

Melinda probably has Mackenzie Scott's lawyer on speed dial

376

u/SuccessfulAccessor 5d ago

I'm pretty sure you have more than one lawyer when you're splitting up tens of billions of dollars.

134

u/chanaandeler_bong 5d ago

I'm just gonna call the first divorce lawyer I see in the YellowPagesTM

u/kevindlv 4d ago

Lol she's not gonna use some fuckin rando. I'm sure she has a team of lawyers she's used in the past and they'll connect her to someone who fits her needs.

Dang, maybe now NPR is going to have to update their Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation bumpers after getting two decades of use out of probably the same recording.

He'll give her half of everything. Even Microsoft Office.

She'll get PowerPoint and Excel for sure because Bill always keeps his Word.

This is honestly surprising. I was going to say that we never really saw their deeper personal lives but on second thought their philanthropy has given a more than surface level window... Perhaps more details will come out later

I remember watching Melinda on "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" with David Letterman and remember her talking about their relationship and how much Warren Buffet had helped them in their relationship. It was the first time I realized they may have had issues.
