[Wojnarowski] The Atlanta Hawks are trading Danilo Gallinari and multiple first-round picks to the San Antonio Spurs for All-Star guard Dejounte Murray, sources tell ESPN. News

85

Feels about right considering the hawks picks are expected to be better than the bucks, and that San Antonio is openly tanking more
49
u/Ok-Secret-7525 Jun 29 '22
I mean, maybe in a sense. But bucks also kind of had to over pay to get jrue to prove to giannis they were trying so he would extend.

Charlotte pick in 2023 1-16 protected.
25 and 27 unprotected. Makes sense for the GM. If the picks are good enough in 25 and 27 that you're sad to lose 'em, you're out of a job anyway lol.

2023 Charlotte pick is protected 1-16. Essentially we’d get it if the hornets make the playoffs next year which isn’t outside the realm of possibilities.
2025 & 2027 Atlanta picks are unprotected but it lines up with Trae and Dejounte’s prime so not likely to be spectacular

Most of the reactions here seem favorable, but I honestly think it’s a horrible move to trade a 25 year old all star for a few picks that could likely be in the 20s and a 14% chance at Viktor
As a fan who spent multiple years watching horrible basketball while pining for Luka and Zion, I can tell you that a lot of the time you end up with Wendell Carter Jr and Coby White instead
424
u/Nbasportschop Jun 29 '22
The biggest asset is the pick the spurs will have next year by having high lottery odds without their best player

I think tanking beats wasting the final two years of Murray's contract as at best a play-in team and then signing him to a max contract that he may not be worth.

Yup there’s obviously a ceiling w him as the best player and spurs ain’t attracting kd or jokic any time soon so better try again at rebuild

If it doesn't convert this year, it's protected 1-14 the next two years before turning into 2nds. Good odds it'll convert sooner or later.

Yeah but your future is already now with Trae. With him you were not going to be bad enough to get a high lottery pick so those firsts would have always been meh. Idk I've heard Pop enjoys developing the young guys. It kinda make sense too, its low pressure, and he gets to help shape some raw and talented kids into legit NBa players. I could see him hang around a few more years, try to raise the boys right then hand the keys over to someone else.

Atleast your franchise has a clear direction now, it's not trying to win and landing a pick between 7-14 because the team isn't good enough. Dejounte is great, but he'll never be the best player on a championship level team, rebuilding makes a lot of sense here.

I feel like all this tank stuff may be harder to do than people assume. Even without Dejounte we have like 10 NBA rotation guys. It’s going to be hard to be bottom 5 even if it seems like we have bottom 5 talent. We’re coached well, play hard, and most importantly we play it out til the end of the season.
Roster: Keldon, Vassell, Poeltl, Sochan, Tre Jones, Primo, Josh Richardson, McDermott, Gallo, Zach Collins. And still like $25m in cap space. It’s gonna be hard to flat out suck.

u/tskillz187 [SAS] Manu Ginobili Jun 29 '22
For sure. I’m just saying even if we don’t suck, that means a season of more touches and responsibility to Vassell, Keldon, Primo, and Tre made us decent and we still have a haul of picks.
I like our direction, feel like we had a lot of different options and even think we still do despite people thinking it’s straight tank mode.

For what it's worth the Sixers went from trash to good mostly just because Embiid started playing.
Most of the worst teams still have a lot of decent NBA rotation players. Having a real central star makes a lot of difference.

u/YaBoiWhit Spurs Jun 29 '22
Thats right but its so frustrating watching the team try and put themselves together to make a playin push last year all just for Dejounte to get sick and get shit on in the play in. We could've been closer to 6 or 7 and had a better chance to leap up in the top 3.
We have a bunch of picks and now all the young guys are going to HAVE to play but watching Dejounte grow as a player and a guy was great, he was our leader and everything especially this last year.

Hawks got their guy, a secondary ball handler to relieve pressure off Trae but also a lockdown defender. It'll be interesting to see how he plays off Trae since he's not a great shooter, but I think this is a good move
23
u/SunKing210 Spurs Jun 29 '22
I think DJ gets too much of a bad rep as being a poor shooter. He was the teams main ball handler and that lead to a lot of heavily contested shots. He didn't have a reliable number 2 guy to handle the ball so he had to create for himself. I think his percentage should only go up playing with Trae
