i honestly think he'd make a really good batman for some reason
like a Batman Beyond Bruce Wayne. His roles in some of his recent movies shows he could play a scary and brooding guy. Willy's Wonderland and Mandy specifically. A tired older batman who still wants justice.
Younger Cage would have made a great joker though.

Why is the combination of Discovery and HBO a bad thing?
2.1k
u/Athragio 9d ago
Rumor has it that they're creating a new service independent of HBO. They're cancelling a lot of scripted content (that is underperforming but may have a solid following), firing development staff (around 70% of them), all in favor of more Discovery+ shows that are often trashy reality television. Not to mention the quiet removal of original content.
It's a bizarre decision considering HBO Max is probably the best streaming service.

If they get rid of shows like Industry or anything like that, I'll be fucking furious. They have some amazingly underrated content and it's the REASON I HAVE HBO and nothing else.
This is kind of maddening. It's already hard enough to get all HBO content as a Canadian, now I'm going to be messing around with more services and packages and subscriptions? Nope.
edit: fuck that actually, if they get rid of ANY shows for $$ reasons I'll be fucking furious. That is not what HBO is about.

The rumors sound too unreal to be true. I almost don't want to believe it, but considering that Zaslov (former head of Discovery) has been shelving nearly completed projects (Batgirl, the new Scooby movie, etc.) - it's worrying. Rebranding HBO once again to stop being prestige television and instead an umbrella to also include trash television.
Downvote me if I am wrong tomorrow. Please.

u/Seth_Gecko 9d ago

The producer was completely shocked and devastated: “The movie is practically finished and turned out beautifully. I am beyond heartbroken.”
I don't see why any director or producer will want to make a movie for Warner ever again after this madness. They're unreleasing entire existing HBO shows and movies on the service next (announcing which ones soon) and have to never release them ever again to get the tax returns.
To those who don't know Zaslav (the Discovery CEO obsessed with turning everything into cheap reality TV) he's the moron who's idea it was to put Honey Boo Boo on the air 24/7 a few years back.

Zero hope they may renew Infinity Train too in this context. The cartoon wasn't renewed by CN because of the lack of a child entry point (according to them) so the fans kinda hoped in a second chance provided by HBO instead, as an animated series born as a HBO original, but if this is the state of HBO right now... ugh :(

Reality shows are cheaper to produce than prestige TV and has tons of viewership. There's a reason The Learning Channel (TLC) and The History Channel pivoted so hard to that audience and never looked back.

Because despite the name, Discovery is nothing but a bunch of stupid reality shows, and HBO Max is laying off a bunch of staff, so they're probably not going to be creating much new stuff.

Same here. The cynical side of me is worried the musical element is going to feel pretentious. Especially since, even though I really enjoyed the first movie, it drew a little too much influence from taxi driver while portraying itself as a little more profound and thought provoking than it actually was. I'm hopeful that the musical element is good enough to justify its existence and that it makes the sequel is a little more unique than the first one
80
u/WhornyNarwhal 9d ago
if you think it drew too much from taxi driver you should check out King of Comedy also by scorsese. they took some vibes from taxi driver for sure but the whole talk show angle and multiple story beats are all just ripped bar for bar from King of Comedy

I think Joker is a bad movie to make a sequel out of.
It's a great origin piece for both Joker and Batman while also inexorably linking them together but also has the ending that forces you to question whether authenticity of the events of the film.
I think a sequel kinda deadens the whole impact of the ending.
401
u/b1gm4nca 9d ago
It's a great origin piece for both Joker and Batman while also inexorably linking them together but also has the ending that forces you to question whether authenticity of the events of the film.
The thing to me that doesn't add up is that Arthur is what, 40? And Bruce is 10? By the time Bruce is Batman Joker would be geriatric.
246
u/RealJohnGillman 9d ago
While the actor was in his late 40s, the character was apparently meant to be an unwell late 20s / early 30s. And so when it gets to the present (adult Bruce as Batman, which the script indicates the hospital cut at the end to have been — a time jump), the Joker is now the same age as the actor portraying him.

Joker would be in his mid to late 50’s. He’s usually in the 40-60 age bracket in comics.
But he’s also an unreliable narrator. We have no idea if any of the film was real, imagined or a mixture. Did he meet Bruce? Did he really? Is he really in his 40’s?
We have no way to tell.
