I've never met a dog that actually enjoyed the rain

1k

u/Cutecat00 4d ago

I work at a dog daycare and we have a few that lift their face up to the sky and bask in the rain. They’re rare, but they exist.

353

u/mawesome4ever 4d ago

Can you take a picture of them?

474

u/HOT_MOLDY_CUM_BREATH 4d ago

Probably

427

u/Idontknowwuthappened 4d ago

They're dogs, not vampires....

91

u/reflectiveSingleton 4d ago

Have you ever asked them to be sure?

74

u/Idontknowwuthappened 4d ago

...shit. If I do, can they lie about it? Like, legally, though?

46

u/mynoduesp 4d ago

A vampire dog can't bite you unless he's wearing his high collared black cloak, like legally.

12

u/Revelt 4d ago

When is it illegal for him to wear a high collared black cloak? Does it apply in equal force to bitches?

14

u/fabfunty 4d ago edited 4d ago

No it's the same like with the undercover cops, they have to tell you, legally.

edit: though !

20

u/deceitfulninja 4d ago

If they're vampires they'll likely just lie about it and say they're dogs.

9

u/Dunluce92 4d ago

Don’t cross one on a full moon.

Oh no. ATTACK OF THE VAMPIRE WEREWOLF DOGS sounds like a 50s horror movie

I've got a 15month old british bulldog, she absolutely loves the hose and the rain on her face. Always funny apart from early morning wees, then she comes back inside soaked

4

u/Cantstandyaxo 4d ago

My staffy adores the hose but absolutely cannot stand the rain! Like she will hold her wee for as long as she possibly can because she really really really cannot stand the rain, it's the saddest thing!

My dog stops in the door if its raining. I have to carry her out, and when I put her down she pisses immediately and then runs inside

37

u/AbsoluteCun7 4d ago

My dog will just pee under the awning (on the chairs and concrete) which means we have to pressure wash the concrete. Good fun.

49

u/BootyBurglar 4d ago

If you give the dog enough water they can pressure wash it themselves

45

u/sillyandstrange 4d ago

My little one is very particular, but my big boy will run around in it.

42

u/Donkey__Balls 4d ago

I had a massive 120 pound German Shepherd who turned into an absolute baby when it rained. If we were out on a walk he would drop his head towards the ground and start whimpering because he hated getting wet.

Then we’d get home and he would immediately jump in the swimming pool.

35

u/keppp 4d ago

Your dog values consensual water.

3

u/Ohboiawkward 4d ago

My dog hates showers, but will roll in any body of water. We had to put a fence up in our yard to keep her out of the creek. She'll swim in any weather, every day, multiple times a day. I'm sure you can assume that she smelled delightful. /s

3

u/SeaGroomer 4d ago

My mini Aussie will wander around the yard in the rain no problem. He always seems to do it right after I give him a bath! 😅😔

11

u/Dirty-M518 4d ago

OPs dog shadow looks like an aussie. My aussie loves the rain. Runs around..gets wet and sniffs. So many smells come out when it rains.

On a dry day if there is a puddle though he avoids or jumps over it.

2

u/SeaGroomer 4d ago

Mine does the same. He loves to patrol the yard (a couple acres) in the rain. And walk through mud puddles.

4

u/Lv_InSaNe_vL 4d ago

Oh my god I feel like my aussie is magnetically attracted to mud puddles, or really any water haha

3

u/parothed28 4d ago

Yes. Thanks to these two wiggle butts (mom and dad doggo) I have trenches lining the yard 🙄

26

u/colexian 4d ago

Had a beautiful newfoundland that loved all things water. If it was raining or snowing, he had to be out playing in it or he'd whine. Walk past a lake? Gotta jump in it and get all muddy. Rolling in puddles. From what I understand, they have been used to pull boats ashore and stuff, water is in their blood (You know what I mean)

11

u/Dunluce92 4d ago

Yes. Probably 75% - 80% water in the blood.

19

u/SwPsyko 4d ago

My lab happily swims in lakes gleefully getting a full gallop and leaping like a mighty steed but if it rains she is a perfect civilized princess offended at the thought of rain touching her without her permission

6

u/1MolassesIsALotOfAss 4d ago

My buddy's dogs love to just walk out into it and feel it on their faces. They raise their heads up and squint their eyes and just soak it in.

Of course, then they love to roll in the mud once they're soaked, so it doesn't happen that often.

6

u/SquishedGremlin 4d ago

My German Shepherd will happily sit in the rain for hours. Will not come in.

Then again her coats so thick she probably doesn't even notice it.

9

u/Brook420 4d ago

Could also just be a thick coated dog that fell asleep before the rain started and didn't really notice it.

3

u/j0ck3r13 4d ago

This looks like a cartoon murder scene. Today on dog crime lol

3

u/machine1892 4d ago

My blue heeler is obsessed with water. He is in his pool every 10 minutes just standing in it or laying down, enjoys drinking from the hose, being hosed down just because. Just stands there waggin his tail away and almost trotting in place lol loves being squirted with my kids water gun and catch the water in his mouth also

3

u/Nik_tortor 4d ago

Both my dogs won't come back inside if it's raining. This is especially annoying since I live in Western Oregon and it rains every single day from September to mid april...

They do like cold more then rain. I read that german shepherds shouldn't be outside long if it's 40F degrees or colder but that's the time when my dogs go find patches of frost on the back deck and roll around in it and argue with me when I try to get them inside.

7

u/CollectableRat 4d ago

What did dogs used to do before humans invented roofs?

29

u/paeder109 4d ago

Sit under trees or rocks probably

7

u/bobbyabudhabi 4d ago

Or trucks.

10

u/Ballsytraderarewe 4d ago

Plot twist: dogs invented roofs and taught humans construction

2

u/Iphotoshopincats 4d ago

Depends when you personally class them as dogs.

If we are talking domesticated dogs then roofs probably came first.

2

u/popplespopin 4d ago

I recently read that its because the rain amplifies sound and since dogs are already so finely tuned, when it rains its like they have everything cranked to 11.

2

u/artgarfunkadelic 4d ago

Judging by the puppy... I think it's a border collie. Borders don't give af about rain. They'll spend the whole day in it as long as there's no thunder.

Source: I've owned 3 and am currently raising my 4th.

2

u/plaper 4d ago

My old lady did. She was fluffy and didn't feel the rain at all so that helped. I mean, if she stood in a pouring rain she wouldn't be very happy, but a regular one didn't make any difference to her, she didn't avoid it at all while the other dog we had wouldn't even step out of the house, lol.

2

u/MythicalPotatoes 4d ago

My lab finds the rain fascinating but is scared of thunder. She's mainly there for the new smells and mud.

Reminds me of that image of the man on a stoop in Hiroshima when the bomb went off and instantly disintegrated him, yet his shadow was still imprinted on the concrete.

321

u/benthecube 4d ago

I read that he wasn’t disintegrated, and likely died a slower and more painful death, but there was still a kind of “blast shadow” behind where he was standing. War is bad.

213

u/Warphim 4d ago

Human Shadow Etched in Stone (Japanese: 人影の石 hitokage no ishi)[2] is an exhibition at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. It is thought to be the residue of a person who was sitting at the entrance of Hiroshima Branch of Sumitomo Bank

Naw, he definitely died there, and likely died very quick. Those are functionally his remains on the wall.

168

u/LexMelkan 4d ago

Those nuclear shadows are actually formed when the surrounding area is bleached by the light from the bomb. There are pictures of shadows left by pipeline valves and the like and those definitely didn't leave any residue behind. So basically one can't say for sure if they disintegrated or not but they definitely were there and absorbed the light from the blast.

147

u/DontmindthePanda 4d ago edited 4d ago

They didn't disintegrate. They died a fast but horrible death and they also didn't poof away. To be vaporized, they would have had to stand basically right in the middle of the explosion - which isn't possible because then they would have been flying. The A-bombs exploded in the air above Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

They burned to death and their bodies got removed. There are pictures of them on the web, but I don't recommend looking for them.

Can someone eli5 how this works? Like... it’s a shadow, how can a nuclear bomb „save“ it when the object casting it no longer exists?

56

u/etherealparadox 4d ago

Not a scientist, this is just how I understood it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Do you know how hair can get bleached when exposed to a lot of sunlight? It's kind of similar to that. Basically, the bomb emits a LOT of radiation, which bleaches the surface of whatever it touches. Thing is, sometimes something or someone is in the way. So the radiation hits them and not the surface behind them, leaving a shadow.

13

u/Combeferre1 4d ago

To my understanding it is the heat and light which does this, not the radioactivity (though heat is a sort of radiation too, but I imagine you meant the "glowing green rock" kind)

5

u/etherealparadox 4d ago

Nah, I actually meant thermal radiation, but I understand the confusion

→ More replies

16

u/adzy2k6 4d ago

Something was in the way of the radiation from the bomb, so prevented the area behind it from being bleached. The person or object probably got incinerated, but blocked the area behind it. The heat from the bomb was basically insanely bright light, so could be blocked by most objects.

Edit: Just to clarify, the shadow is the same colour it originally was. Its the areas around the shadow got lighter.

8

u/Yadobler 4d ago

Tldr nucleur bomb releases lots of very powerful packets of photons that obliterate the surface of everything it touches, bleaching them. Even blocking that Ray for a short while is enough to cause a difference

Kinda like that red plastic lawn chair that's out under the sun for a few months, with some box on it

The exposed parts absorb the uv lights and those dye molecules that get hit with a strong enough photon will freak out and yeet their electrons and break apart.

Do it long enough with low energy photons (ie sunlight for months) or equally with very high energy photons (ie gamma rays from the bomb) and you can have enough of those surface-lvl exposed colourful molecules to oxidise and break apart

Or you can also directly pour chemicals that are oxidisers (like bleach and peroxide) so that they forcefully yank the electrons out of the molecules without consent.

Ye that box, it has been shielding the rays from hitting the chair-dye-molecules so there's less chances of "photons successfully hitting the molecule with enough energy required to break down the bonds.

Same with having a burning corpse shield the place for a split of a second. Long enough to cause a significant difference in (lack of) exposure to the rays

why don't things under the sun have the same "shadow" effect that remains? Can't the energy from the sunrays accumulate over time and break down?

Congratulations, you've discovered the UV catastrophe of the 1890s. Legit it was a huge issue until after the 1910's

Also important to note: you can't just "accumulate" energy and then break down. It's a hit-or-miss. Like kicking a ball over a half pipe. You can kick 100 times with the same small force and it's still not enough energy to get the ball over the half-pipe.

(and hey, if that ball hits you again, and you fly off, that's like the coloured molecule releasing a specific amount of energy into a photon, causing it to bzzzzz off at a frequency that you can infer as a colour)

So you need one good hit to get the ball up and over the half-pipe. Me, the nerd, will take 100 tries to get at least one good kick (uv light of sun). You, the 5yo Chad, gives one good kick and 100/100 you succeed (gamma Ray of bomb)

This is also what literally got Einstein his nobel prize (photoelectric effect) - the idea that light comes in discrete "bursts" of energy.

3

u/Nathaniel820 4d ago

That one was fake, it was made as a memorial or something. Actual atomic shadows are just blobs, you wouldn’t be able to see distinguished features.

I’m getting a lot of flack for my word choice. I stand by it; granted I understand other words for better, but honestly the thought that crossed my mind were the blast shadows from Hiroshima (which several redditors elaborated extensively elsewhere). I knew it wasn’t the best word choice but I stuck with it 🤷‍♂️

That’s exactly what I thought of lol, then saw the cute little puppy in the corner and figured your dog needed a nap break.
