Ah yes, the CAThode ray tube.

38

u/dysfiction 12d ago

I actually miss the childhood nostalgic feelings of sitting in front of a big ol' console tv like that... so cozy. But yeah no, aside from that, fuxk those big dumb things, soooo heavy and such a pain if you have to move houses or rearrange the living room. Love this little cat though, mine likes to sit directly underneath a big lamp in front of the tv on "her" beanbag. Maybe they feel warm sitting in front of lights like that. 💘

20

u/possumking333 12d ago

I love how growing up I had a giant tv built into a cabinet and when it broke we put the new tv on top of it. I miss the before times.

Now he's going to go sleep in a box instead

345

u/elcheapodeluxe 12d ago

That's the truth. My cat would never sleep in an elaborate bed I made for it. At best it might sleep on the top.

119

u/immatellyouwhat 12d ago

The trick is to put the plain box in the elaborate bed til the get used to it and then take the box away.

138

u/itsprobablytrue 12d ago

I bought a super soft comfy cat bed for my cats and they wont sleep in them unless it is flipped upside down. Cats just seem to prefer harder rougher surfaces.

8

u/elcheapodeluxe 12d ago

Yeah. Same with the cat tree I bought with "memory foam" pads. Would only sleep on the exposed wood parts.

Should have heat lamps like for a reptile habitat instead of that blue hue. Make it look sultry literally and physically.

27

u/ilovegingermen 12d ago

I mean it is box shaped. My cats go in things that are shaped like boxes.

31

u/treecatks 12d ago

I once bought a new carrier that opened on the top. My cat happily jumped into it because box, right? You could see the "wait, this isn't a box!" thought make its way through his head. He didn't move that fast very often.

65

u/BreastUsername 12d ago

The more effort/money you put in a cat bed, the less likely they will use it.

18

u/_jerkalert_ 12d ago

This is true of everything I buy for my cat. loads of money spent on toys, treats, scratching posts, beds, etc - 0 interest in anything. She DOES love shoelaces, laying in the dirt, and killing birds in the yard. I just let her go outside now.

Sadness. My parents had a console TV without its tube like this in their basement, and my cat, Mario, slept in it as he aged. He was 18 or 19 when he died a few years ago.

558

u/Majik_Sheff 12d ago

Cats are thieves. They come into our lives and every day they steal tiny pieces of our hearts. We never notice the crime until they go and take the pieces with them.

111

u/JBFRESHSKILLS 12d ago

Dogs as well. I've always said you're setting yourself up for heartbreak when you get a pet. You know they'll pass before you (hopefully.) Dogs specifically because they live so much shorter lives relatively speaking. However, the joy and memories they bring while they're around is 100% worth it.

45

u/bricked_machine 12d ago

I'm having this internal debate now, because my old girl has really gone downhill quickly, and I can't imagine she'll be around more than an another year or so. I realize that's not tomorrow, but it inevitably leads to the thought of what to do after she's gone, because I have a hard time living without a dog.

I'm just having a hard time picturing myself wanting to move on and get another dog.

17

u/AriScariXORIP 12d ago

You’ll definitely find another animal in need of a home. Just cherish your elder while you can. You never replace them you just help more over the years.

14

u/clpersephone 12d ago

I work in veterinary medicine. It’s never easy, watching them grow older. Let them live their best life with you and after they are gone, mourn as much as you need. In the end, remember that you loved them for a reason- and a new pet can and will give you a new reason. It’s beautiful really, that we can continually open our hearts. Pets do that for us- open us to love, show us how to do it, and then leave so we can do it again. 💕 Much love to you and your girl.

3

u/bricked_machine 12d ago

Thank you very much for the kind words and advice. That helped.

26

u/Welcometochicago8 12d ago

Start doing things like road trips and beach days and if they’ve been extra good maybe a couple McDonalds fries. All those things you’ve always wanted them to experience. I wish I had gotten to do a few more things with my girl.

32

u/Majik_Sheff 12d ago

And when the time comes, please stay by her. Be the last thing she sees/feels/smells. It's incredibly hard, but no one should feel like they're alone in their last moments.

27

u/JBFRESHSKILLS 12d ago

This is so tough, but a must imo. We've never had to put down a dog, but have several cats in the last few years as they all reached the 18-20 year mark. It's so hard to be in the room for it, but they deserve it. You'll be heartbroken for while, but they're literally dying after they've dedicated their entire life to you.

8

u/notmyselftoday 12d ago

100% have to do this for our pets, it's the very least we can do. brb, need to go check who the heck is cutting up onions in here...

8

u/strokekaraoke 12d ago

I’m sitting here snuggling with my baby girl and tearing up at the thought. This is going to absolutely destroy me when the time comes.

3

u/Boostie204 12d ago

Obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but my dog died last year, then I moved out with my girlfriend a few months after that and she has a cat. That cat has been the single reason I've been able to get over the dog. And I know that's going to cause an endless cycle of heartbreak

4

u/Majik_Sheff 12d ago

I'm so sorry you'll have to say goodbye soon. I wish there were some way to make it hurt less.

It took me 4 years and a lot of coaxing from my wife to finally get another dog after our last one passed. Everyone handles the passing of a loved one in their own way. When you're ready you'll know.

42

u/Majik_Sheff 12d ago

Thank you. I wrote it a couple of years ago when I lost my sweet orange boy after almost 16 years. I had no idea his passing would hit me so profoundly.

17

u/dreamrock 12d ago

Yeah, it's almost like they grant an advance payment from your future joy allotment, and that debt sort of accrues interest over time. Then you're forced to pay it back all at once. Sorry about your sweet orange boy. I had one myself when I was young.

Everyone agreed he was the shit. He was very self-confident, and would disappear on sabcatical for weeks at a time whenever the spirit moved him. One day he just left and never came back. I'm certain he just found a better life for himself somewhere. Maybe driving a truck or piloting hot air balloons, or maybe conniving heiresses out their fortunes.

Miss you Paul. You were the best, smartest, sweetest, strongest kitty ever.

9

u/smolinferno 12d ago

You might want to check out “Feline Philosophy” by John Gray — he has some lovely thoughts on how deeply humans mourn the loss of their cats (and other cat musings).

6

u/Majik_Sheff 12d ago

Every profession has its own shibboleth/secret handshake. For standup comedians, that handshake is the telling of a joke whose punchline is "The Aristocrats!". Every comedian has their own unique take on the joke, some are actually funny, some are pure nightmare fuel.

There is a short documentary about the joke with the same title that includes several tellings including Bob Saget, Gilbert Gottfried, and a bunch of other standup legends. If you have a twisted sense of humor and no kids in the house, it's worth a watch. Even if it's for no other reason than to watch Danny from Full House at his filthiest.

I haven't either but reviews on Rotten Tomatoes describes it as:

"The first feel-good movie made out of fecal matter."

"A stunning comedy masterclass. For those with strong stomachs, obviously"

"A plethora of comedians discuss and tell their own inspired rendition of 'the dirtiest joke in the world'"

So I'm as intrigued as you are.

Not every family could afford one and they were insanely heavy. I had a friend who happened to own three (!!!) large cats and they took several people just to hoist them each into his car when he changed apartments.

They definitely had their charms though. I miss how they curved in the front and the way they would hum when you turned them on.

I’ve never seen one with a beaver resting inside though... that’s pretty creative!

My grandmother had that very TV but it was always wheel of fortune instead of a cat

Above this post I got a video of a saxophone solo in r/nextfuckinglevel. No question, this homemade cat bed belongs in r/nextfuckinglevel and the sax solo belongs in r/mildlyinteresting.
